Welcome to our Local Love issue. This month, we bring to you stories about local experiences and gems that make our community so special, as well as ways to show love to your family and community. I recently had the opportunity to attend a holiday tea at the Cherokee Ranch & Castle near Daniels Park. Over the years, I’d heard about this unique Scottish-style manor tucked away in the hills of Douglas County, but I never realized how special a place it was until I walked up the magnificent drive and into the heavy-hinged front door. On this particular day, a winter fog and chill had set in over the foothills and it truly felt like stepping into a 15th century castle in the mysterious highlands of a faraway land. We toasted the Christmas season and ate tea sandwiches, hearing about the incredible history of this homestead, made famous by the last private owner, the late Tweet Kimball, a fiery and fearless cattlewoman whose heart and soul lives on in this special place. If you want to dig into your local roots, whether you’re a recent transplant or a native Coloradan, start here. The Cherokee Ranch boasts priceless art, antiques and rare books rivaling that of any public institution. The architecture is jaw-dropping. And the surrounding geologically rich ranchland plays host to a working ranch and the Cherokee Ranch Science Institute. Check out our story "Tea for Two" in this issue to see more. What a legacy. We’re in love with this rich resource we have literally in our back yard. What other people and places make Highlands Ranch and Lone Tree so special? Send us a note and let us know. A few special touches transform the comfort of your own home into a romantic and intimate setting for dinner This look employs a non-traditional setting - the coffee table in the living room layered with pillows and cozy blankets on the ground. Use a table runner instead of a tablecloth, and create a handmade floral arrangement on a two-tiered serving tray. Add grapes or berries to give a robust and textured look. For ambiance, add candle sticks, a bottle of wine, and Billie Holiday in the background. For a no-hassle dinner, serve your favorite takeout, (check out the City List for our favs) or prepare this pasta recipe together for the perfect dinner in.

CAPELLI D’ANGELO ALLA NANNI Recipe courtesy of Chef Jasper Mirabile Jr. Ingredients • 8 oz. capellini • 2 tsp. salted butter • 4 oz. prosciutto ham • 4 mushrooms, sliced thin • 12 oz. marinara sauce • 4 oz. heavy cream • 1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes • 4 oz. shredded romano cheese Method 1. Cook pasta al dente according to package directions. 2. Melt 2 tsp. butter in a saute pan over medium-high heat. Add prosciutto and cook until crisp, then add sliced mushrooms. Saute for 2 minutes. 3. Stir in marinara sauce, cream, red pepper flakes, peas, and Romano cheese. Bring to a light boil. Add cooked pasta and toss. Serve immediately. Jasper’s notes: Be careful to cook the pasta al dente as it can become soggy very quickly. Add more red pepper if you like a spicy kick.

When we visited visual artist Ceelee Simpson at her studio recently, her playlist titled “Listen to What Your Heart Is Saying” was playing in the background. During the visit, layered under our conversation were melodies of country music, jazz, classic rock, 70’s love songs, and even a James Blunt song weaved in and out. Ceelee has a singular theme in her art: LOVE. Like many artists before her, the universal experience of love serves as her muse. Love in all of its layered glory. Her work is remarkably bright and cheery, as is her perception of love.

I Got A Vibe The First Time I Saw You

That isn’t to say she is naive to the trappings or dark underside of amoré. She simply chooses to represent the joyful, uplifting, and exciting experience that comes along with it—most of the time. Once in a while, when the struggle of this peculiar emotion presents itself, that is what she paints. “When I’m painting, I experience these emotions...and that comes out on the canvas.” Ceelee says. “Usually, these are the universal experiences most people feel. Once in a while, I experience something unique to me. I don’t sell those paintings. Those stay with me.”

Her paintings have titles like “You Are The Magnet, And I Am The Steel,” “I Got A Vibe The First Time I Saw You,” “Torn Between Two Lovers,” and “Sweet Life.” “Even though I title my work, the person viewing it may think something else. That's fine.” Ceelee came to Colorado in the mid-90s to attend a meditation retreat. Like many who visit the area, she loved it and relocated here within two months. Her previous career as a graphic artist in advertising and marketing informs her work today.

In her home studio, every corner holds a source of inspiration, contained in an organized, chaotic way. Layers of colored pencils, a rubber duck collection, curios, art supplies, and paints.

“All art is about balance, artistic concepts,” Ceelee said about the graphic elements in her work. Ceelee's primary medium is oil paint and wax on canvas or paper. Her method of mixing wax with the oil before spreading on the canvas, instead of on top once the painting is complete, allows for a thicker application in which she can create straight, graphic-like lines. The studio mirrors her artistic process: layers of paint, tape, brushes, putty knives, pastry scrapers, and stencils. Working on multiple pieces simultaneously, Ceelee moves from one to another as the layers of paint dry. Her work mirrors life’s experiences, layers of joy, struggle, art, and unsurprisingly, love. 28

Cherokee Ranch & Castle sits atop a rocky outcrop south of Daniels Park. Originally homesteader’s land, the Scottish-style castle was built in the 1920s by the Johnson Family. Tweet Kimball, an avid equestrian and rancher, purchased the property and adjacent land in 1954 to raise her beloved Santa Gertrudis cattle. Developed to thrive on the native grasses of South Texas brush, she believed the colder climate of Colorado was an ideal breeding ground. Despite the skeptics, Santa Gertrudis cattle are now bred in varied climates worldwide. Tweet and Cherokee Ranch are recognized within cattle breeding circles for this legacy and continue to manage a herd for historical and educational purposes. Tweet, with The Douglas County Open Lands Coalition, created a conservation easement in 1986 to protect Cherokee Ranch, which now holds the deed to the 3,400-acre property, castle, ranch, and historic outbuildings. It fulfilled Tweet’s vision to preserve the natural landscape and abundant wildlife, restore historic structures, and broaden Colorado’s cultural life with activities devoted to
