LIFESTYLE LETTER
Welcome Home
March 2023 PUBLISHER
Jennifer Starbuck | Jennifer.Starbuck@CityLifestyle.com EDITOR
Sonja Nix | Sonja.Nix@CityLifestyle.com
Home. So much contained in that little four letter word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable. Author Wendy Wunder said, “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.” As we thought about home — we wanted to highlight what makes it special to our readers. That of course includes the food and drinks, the aesthetic and design, but most importantly — the people. We feel like the lucky ones as we got to learn more about the businesses and individuals that comprise this city and hope the small lens into their lives and work brings people in this community together. As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people around you, in your city, neighborhood — and most of all your home. Every month, we hear from readers who keep this magazine for longer than just the month labeled on the cover. They say they hold onto it for months as coffee table art or an accessory in their home. We feel proud to create a resource that is valued in our community and strive every month to deliver the value you expect. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home.

With all the thought and effort we put into our home’s interior design, there may be a simple addition that can serve as a focal point or a pop of color for the decor and has the added benefit of improving our mood. Including cut flowers in the home has been proven to have a number of benefits. Studies show that flowers have a positive impact on mood, can increase focus and can increase creativity as well. Highlands Ranch resident Rose R. has been having Abloom Florists deliver fresh flowers to her home every two weeks since 2020. “It is important for me to have fresh flowers in my home because flowers to me equal happiness. They can change the mood and environment completely, provided the arrangement meets your style and contributes to your home’s decor,” she says.

Leah Rosine, owner of Abloom, agrees. “I have a great appreciation for the positivity that flowers can bring to a person. There is a very special person that taught me to try and have fresh flowers in the house as often as possible because it makes you feel good. And it’s true.” Rosine estimates that approximately 75 percent of her business consists of home and business orders and 25 percent is walk-in or event orders, like weddings. One of Abloom’s regular business orders is to St. Mark Catholic Church. According to Diana Corliss, Director of Sacred Music and Liturgical Coordinator at St. Mark, “We choose to get fresh flowers most weeks of the year to beautify our church. Mass is a representation of heaven on earth, and flowers remind us of the paradise of the Garden.” Using flowers to beautify and create happiness seems especially wonderful in the spring. Tulips are one of the first flowers to bloom so they are very popular in spring arrangements. The meanings behind the colors of tulips can range from red representing love to the superstition that dreams about white tulips represent a fresh start or a new beginning. Rosine also likes to use hyacinths in the spring. She says, “The hyacinth is a great spring flower. It’s got so much rich texture.” Also a spring blooming flower, the hyacinth is well known for its fragrance as well as the visual impact of its bunches of small loose flowers. Rose R. remembers how she first started having Abloom deliver to her home. “I was horrible at putting together an arrangement that would last more than a week and looked how I wanted it to in a focal point of my home. I am now a believer that a well-put-together arrangement and a designer who has the eye for what their customer wants can truly be a turning point in having fresh flowers be a differentiator in your home.” Visit AbloomHighlandsRanch.com for additional floral inspiration.

Baking at a Mile High BAKER, BLOGGER, PHOTOGRAPHER BUILDS HER PASSION FOR CREATING MASTERPIECES FROM SCRATCH
ARTICLE BY SONJA NIX | PHOTOGRAPHY BY HEATHER SMOKE

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
Looking for a new fan-girl crush? Check out Heather Smoke’s Curly Girl Kitchen. From her eye-catching photographs to her heart-warming recipes, Heather makes creating high-altitude, from-scratch, original recipes look easy. All that hard work does make the recipes easy for her followers, over 80,000 at last count. Here, we talk to the local food blogger to dish about how she got her start.
WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO COLORADO? I was born in South Carolina and lived there until I was 12, when my parents moved us to Colorado. I’ve lived here off and on since then, although I went to college out of state and moved to a few other places before eventually settling back in Colorado.
YOU HAVE A BACKGROUND TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE IN CHINA. WHAT WAS THAT EXPERIENCE LIKE? Living in China for three years was an amazing experience. I traveled all over China, Hong Kong,
even Tibet, and built amazing friendships with the other teachers and students. It was right after graduation from a strict private college, and living overseas was the first real taste of independence I’d ever had. It truly shaped me into the person I am now.
HOW DID YOU BECOME CURLY GIRL? WHEN DID YOU REALIZE THIS COULD BE YOUR JOB? I have always loved baking more than cooking. Growing up, both my parents worked, so I made dinners of canned beef stew with rice, muffin mixes and occasionally boxed cake mix or brownies. But I knew nothing about baking from scratch. When my husband and I met, one of our favorite date nights was to cook a fancy dinner. He would make the most delicious steak with roasted vegetables or homemade sushi, while I’d make a dessert to go with it. I’d then take a few casual photos and share them on Facebook with my friends and family for fun. As my love of baking and photography grew, I started a blog in 2011. This was “diary blogging” CONTINUED >

—stories about life, with a few awful photos and a recipe added at the end. I couldn’t think of a name for my blog, so I named it after my naturally curly hair. For years, my blog was just a hobby. While working a full-time office job, I’d make maybe one to two recipes a week for my blog and dabbled in a few other things, like selling custom cakes for local friends. When our children were born in 2016 and 2018, I decided to be a stay-at-home mom. During those first few years of motherhood, my boys demanded most of my time, but as they grew older, I was able to start turning my attention back to my blog. I wanted to contribute financially without returning to work in an office, and was determined to turn my passion into a real job. I took a food photography course and practiced photographing my baked goods almost every day. I decided to rewrite and rephotograph nearly every recipe on my site, working late into the night for over a year to update all my posts. As I improved my content, my page views started to climb until 2021, when I signed with a premium ad agency. In three years, my Instagram account has grown from around 5,000 followers to almost 83,000 followers. My website’s monthly page views increased from around 10,000 to over 200,000.
YOU PRODUCE BEAUTIFUL BAKING, STYLING AND PHOTOS. RARE TO SEE ALL DONE SO WELL BY ONE BLOGGER. HOW HAVE YOU PERFECTED WHAT YOU DO? I create an average of five new recipes a week, so I practice daily. The more I bake, the more I learn what works and what doesn’t, and my goal is to create the most delicious and reliable recipes that other high-altitude bakers can replicate in their kitchens. I want people to be successful when making my recipes and to tell others about my site, so I test them repeatedly to get consistent results. My visual style has dramatically changed since that photography course three years ago. The key is never to stop learning from others, to study photography that inspires you, read tutorials and consistent practice.

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
WHAT’S FOR DINNER AT YOUR HOUSE? I cook dinner most nights, although my husband does his share, too. We actually eat pretty healthfully most of the time, and I try hard not to let my boys have too many sweets, which is a challenge with all the baking I do. Weeknights are simple dinners of chicken and asparagus, pot roast and rice, spaghetti, or salad and baked salmon. On the weekends, we’ll make homemade pizza, tacos, or grilled chicken wings.
IT IS DIFFICULT TO GET ANYTHING DONE WITH LITTLE CHILDREN AT HOME, MUCH LESS RUN A HOME-CENTERED BUSINESS. HOW DO YOU DO IT? It’s been very challenging, but it helps now that my oldest is in full-time kindergarten, although my youngest only goes to preschool for a few hours each day. I create a content calendar for myself every few months and stick to it as much as possible. Routine is important, so I know what I need to
do every day before they’re home from school and the house becomes chaotic. When you’re self-employed, it takes a lot of discipline to get up and start working every day, but hard work is the way to reach my goals. I also owe a huge thanks to my husband for his constant support of everything I do. When we were dating, he bought me a Kitchen-Aid stand mixer for our first Christmas. And when he saw how much I loved photography, he bought me my first DSLR camera for my birthday. Without his encouragement and support, I don’t think I’d have turned a creative passion into my career.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR CURLY GIRL KITCHEN? I always have a list of recipes I want to add to my site, so for the next year, I’ll keep creating recipes that I think people are looking for. Long term, I’d love to publish a baking book or two.

This lower air pressure at high altitudes affects baked goods by causing them to rise more quickly and lose moisture faster. Cookies, cakes, muffins, breads, and even candy making and canning can all be affected by altitude. This can result in flat cookies, sunken cakes, muffins or cupcakes that spill out onto the pan instead of rising with a nice domed top. Generally speaking, when baking at high altitudes, you must increase the flour and liquid, and reduce the sugar and leavening (baking soda and baking powder). Additional flour helps stabilize the structure of the dough or batter. Extra liquid, in the form of milk, oil or egg, compensates for what is lost through quicker evaporation. Less sugar improves the texture so that your baked goods aren’t gummy or overly caramelized, since sugar becomes more concentrated at high altitudes. And by reducing the leavening you’ll better control the rise of your baked goods, so that they rise steadily and evenly, rather than rising quickly and collapsing.

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350. Line a standard muffin pan with paper liners. It’s helpful to lightly spray the liners with non-stick baking spray to prevent sticking. 2. In a bowl, beat the cream cheese, sugar and lemon zest with electric mixer for two minutes until smooth. Scrape the bowl and beat in the eggs until smooth. 3. Switch to a whisk, and whisk in milk and lemon juice. 4. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and poppy seeds. Add dry ingredients to the wet and use whisk to quickly incorporate batter just until there are no visible streaks of flour. Batter should be thick and pillowy. 5. Divide evenly between the muffin cups. They will be fairly full. 6. Pile the crumb topping on top of the batter. It will seem like you have too many crumbs, but after baking, it will be just right, lightly press them into the batter. 7. Bake the muffins on the center oven rack for 18-21 minutes, until a cake tester or toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool muffins in the pan for about 5 minutes, then carefully remove and set on a wire rack to cool. Save any crumbs that fall off in a bowl.
Lemon Drizzle INGREDIENTS • ¾ cup powdered sugar • Zest of 1 large lemon • 2 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
DIRECTIONS 1. Whisk together powdered sugar, lemon zest and lemon juice until smooth. 2. Drizzle half the icing over the hot muffins, then sprinkle with the crumb topping that fell off. Drizzle with the rest of the icing. The icing will help to secure the crumbs and keep them in place.
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY HEATHER SMOKE NOTE: Store leftover muffins in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
3. Let the muffins cool for 10-15 minutes, and serve warm. MAR CH 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/H I GH L AN D S R A N C H

ROCKY MOUNTAIN dream home
The HGTV® Dream Home 2023 is a newly built, fully furnished home located around the corner from Highlands Ranch in Morrison. Much like our community, Morrison is fairly close to lively downtown and provides easy access to skiing. The home was designed by architecture firm Western Design Group, built by local builder Mountain Plain Homes and includes landscape architecture from Designs by Sundown. The home’s interior design is by Brian Patrick Flynn. “This year’s HGTV Dream Home is designed around the natural splendor of Morrison, with outdoor space that truly feels like a secluded, spectacular oasis,” said Flynn. “I love to honor the local

culture with my design, and this year’s home celebrates the adventure that Colorado is known for.” “The HGTV Dream Home serves as a source of inspiration across design, architecture and lifestyle for millions of HGTV fans,” said Jane Latman, President, Home & Food Content and Streaming, Warner Bros. Discovery. Since 1997, HGTV has sponsored its annual project house and sweepstakes. The homes are showcased in a television special to usher in the new year on Jan. 1. The fully furnished, custom-built homes are valued in excess of $1 million and viewers are invited to enter online. This year’s sweepstakes ended Feb. 16. The three-bedroom, three-bathroom home is approximately 4,360 square feet, resting on a secluded road against the backdrop of the beautiful Rocky Mountains. Leaning into the outdoor lifestyle of the South Metro Area, the home provides an elevated take on rugged design with sophisticated luxury that greets visitors upon entry. Highlights of the home include the classically modern kitchen featuring sleek appliances, a spacious pantry, a wet bar and a formal dining space. Filled with natural light from expansive windows, the open floor plan leads into the living room. The main bedroom boasts a stunning deck, walk-in closet and en-suite bathroom, and the two spacious guest suites are each designed in a unique color palette with designated seating areas in each. The home’s outdoor space pays homage to Colorado’s natural beauty with various outdoor seating options, a full outdoor kitchen, as well as a cozy fire pit off a waterfall and natural stone bridge, in addition to a private pergola placed right in the middle of nature.

Ever ything you need to know to create a breathtaking in-home bar
Having a home bar is cool. It is, however, not cool if the only thing you can offer guests is a couple of dusty bottles of liquor that have been there for years. What you have in your home bar can make or break your gathering, however informal it may be. A well-rounded bar should include at least one bottle of each of the six base liquors, which are the foundation for the majority of cocktails. Stocking a nice selection of these will ensure you can mix up almost any cocktail on a whim. If you feel like a whiskey cocktail tonight, you’ll be ready. When a guest asks for a brandy, gin, rum or tequila-based libation, you’ll be prepared to grab your shaker and mix up a drink.
VODK A Vodka has a clean, transparent flavor and is used for more cocktails than any other distilled spirit. Stock at least one “fifth” bottle of vodka, but opt for a handle (1.75 liters) if you like to entertain. • A good solid option like Titos is ideal for tall drinks like the screwdriver and bloody mary. • If you enjoy a vodka martini, spend a little extra for a top-shelf bottle as well. • Consider stocking a couple of flavored vodkas. In a traditional bar, citrus and vanilla vodkas are the trusted standbys. suggested glassware:

WHISKEY
RUM
A well-stocked bar has at least two bottles of rum. • A light rum will be your workhorse for most cocktails, from the tropical daiquiri to the timeless mojito. • As a secondary rum, take your pick of aged, dark or spiced rum. suggested glassware:
GIN
Gin can be quite floral and botanical depending on the brand, since it is made from very botanicalforward juniper berries. • If you aren’t an aficionado, a good bottle of a London dry gin is recommended. This is the most versatile and can work in everything from a gin and tonic to a dry martini. • From there, you can get adventurous - every brand is different and a wide array of flavors is available. suggested glassware:
TEQUIL A Tequila’s quality can vary drastically, so make sure to test them out before purchasing. It’s the key to the ever-loved margarita, though there are other fascinating tequila cocktails to explore as well. Generally, you’ll want to stock at least one nice tequila. • The most versatile style is blanco (or silver) tequila, and it’s the best option for a one-tequila bar. • For a little upgrade, add a slightly aged reposado as well. suggested glassware:

H AP PY H OU R | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
This is where things get complicated. Each whiskey has its own style and characteristics. In general, two bottles are a good start - but you can always add more. • For the most versatility, stock a bourbon and Canadian whisky. The bourbon will give you that robust whiskey flavor and the Canadian blends tend to be very smooth. • Rye whiskey is a great choice for everyday mixed drinks. Though some drinkers find it too spicy, rye is excellent in almost any cocktail that calls for a generic whiskey. If you enjoy classic cocktails, give rye a try for an authentic taste. • A bottle of Irish whiskey and a decent blended scotch are good complements to any bar. While they make excellent cocktails, they’re not as common or as versatile as the other styles. suggested glassware:
WHERE TO STOCK YOU R BA R : Fortunately for Highlands Ranch and Lone Tree, there are copious options for stocking your bar. The essential tools, such as shakers, bar spoons, and shot measures, can be found at many liquor stores, small shops, and even big box stores. Don’t overlook the small details, such as garnish and appropriate ice. Large square or round ice cubes for highball glasses are made in specialty ice cube trays. To cool a summer drink to perfection, make popular nugget ice in your own kitchen with a stand alone ice maker. Finally, for the best cocktail experience, find glassware that shows off your personal style and is best suited for the drink.

LIQUEUR S
Liqueurs are often used as flavoring agents that define a cocktail. On occasion, they are the only distilled spirits in a drink. Liqueurs come in every flavor you could want and a bottle can last quite a long time. Start with the basics and gradually add to your stock as you see fit. Amaretto: The almond-flavored liqueur is used in both fancy and casual cocktails. • Coffee Liqueur: White Russians and countless other cocktails rely on a bottle like Kahlúa. • Dry and Sweet Vermouth: Technically, these are fortified wines, but they’re essential for martinis. • Irish Cream Liqueur: Baileys is a popular brand, though there are others worth checking out. You can also stock another cream liqueur, such as RumChata instead. • Orange Liqueur: Used in countless cocktails, this one’s invaluable. Options include curaçao, triple sec, Cointreau, and Grand Marnier. suggested glassware: MAR CH 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/H I GH L AN D S R A N C H

3 Hot Trends
ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY BY J.A. STENGER PHOTOGRAPHY
in Kitchen Design
A peek at what’s ahead: bold cabinet colors, statement hardware and swaths of stone. When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh. We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.
TAKING THE COUNTER MATERIAL UP THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.
WARMING UP THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.
CONTRAST, CONTRAST, CONTRAST! From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen.

Brooke’s Pro Tip: I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material. Save with the Sun Solar Can Reduce Rising Electric Costs and Increase Your Home Value Too
ARTICLE BY JOAN DAMERON With an average of 300 days of sunshine a year, homes in Colorado are some of the best candidates in the country for solar panels. Like any large purchase, having a knowledgeable local expert to help you make an informed decision is key. The first step is setting up a consultation to see if a solar panel system is right for you and your home. “We want to make it as easy as possible to become a power owner and not a power renter,” says Duane Amado with Mile High Solar. Investing in a residential solar system can be compared to purchasing a home when you have been renting. Rising electric costs have been a major topic of conversation, and rates typically rise 4% - 12% each year. Installing solar will lower your electric bill, avoid increasing costs of electricity, and increase the value of your home. The panels themselves are very durable and require little maintenance. Local electric companies might offer incentives and two federal programs can lower the initial cost of installation. The Sales and Use Tax Exemption for Renewable
Energy Equipment prevent purchasers of solar systems from having to pay sales tax. Net metering allows homeowners to get credit for excess solar that is generated and “banked” during summer months and then can be used on cloudy winter days, for example. The Property Tax Exemption for Residential Renewal Energy Equipment means that homeowners won’t have to pay property tax on the increased value of a home as a result of installing solar. The federal incentive can reduce your federal tax bill by up to 30% depending on when the solar system was or is installed. A local expert can guide you through what permits are needed, getting approval from your HOA, and the best type of panels for your home. A company that offers the best equipment and panels and also has them in stock is also something to look for so installation can take place in a timely manner.
