As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for busier school and sport routines and schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Here, we're honored to feature the Morgan Adams Foundation Concours d'Elegance, coming up at the end of the month at Centennial Airport. Partnership Preserves Land for Future Generations In collaboration with Douglas County School District, the Douglas County Commissioners voted to dedicate land at Sweetwater and Toepfer parks to South Suburban Parks and Recreation and Highlands Ranch Metro District to preserve for future generations. Unused land had previously been preserved for school use, and will now be developed for recreation at the discretion of South Suburban and Highlands Ranch Metro District. As master plans are developed, the public will have the opportunity to participate and provide feedback.

Highlands Ranch’s own Performing Arts Academy’s mission is “Transforming our community and our world through a generation of students who are confident in their self-worth, understand the importance of serving their community, and recognize the value in our individual differences.” PAA founder Dr. James Ramsey taught middle and high school music in Rochester, New York, before relocating to the Denver area. Directing several youth musicals, he witnessed first hand the inspirational and transformative benefits theater provides for students of all ages. After arriving in Colorado, he and his wife Leigh created a drama ministry at St. Luke’s UMC, which quickly became a huge success. In spring 2006, he and his colleagues at St. Luke’s put on a one-week summer camp for youth. “Funding cuts were significantly impacting the performing arts programs in the local schools, and I determined there needed to be another creative outlet for students in our area,” says Dr. Ramsey. Based on the students’ enthusiasm and parent feedback, the program evolved from a musical summer camp to a year-round performing arts program. Dr. Jim, as PAA students call him, created a comprehensive arts education program to “cultivate confidence and self-worth, along with building life skills through performing arts experiences.”

PAA became an independent 501(c)(3) organization in 2011, with a 20-25% participation increase each year. The 2022 enrollment is approaching 1,300 Pre K – 12th grade students, who participate in 22 different theater productions, 32 summer mini camps, and over 70 fall and spring classes related to acting, singing, dancing and technical theater. Their offerings in technical theater are unique to PAA, which include lighting design, stage makeup, costuming and more. These classes open up PAA to students who don’t wish to be on stage, but still want to be involved. Driven to reach students who otherwise might not have access to performing arts education, PAA launched the Afterschool Outreach program in Title 1 schools. PAA currently offers before and after school programming at three schools in Arapahoe and Douglas Counties, with plans to expand to more schools along the Front Range. “Since 2006, PAA has inspired and created transformative experiences for over 8,000 students who desired to learn, perform and grow in a safe and encouraging space, “ says Dr. Ramsey. Brookings Institute’s 2019 large-scale, randomized controlled trial study found arts education significantly improved “student’s school engagement, college aspirations, and inclinations to draw upon CONTINUED >

works of art as a means for empathizing with others.” Dr. Ramsey further explains how PAA directly and positively impacts the youth in our community. “PAA is in the middle of issues that our children and youth are dealing with everyday, whether at school or at home. As part of a production, a class, or a circle of friends, everyone contributes and is an important part of the community.” He explains the benefits in further detail: • Offers students a technology-free environment, where play and creativity is encouraged, social & emotional connections are abundant, and they experience a sense of belonging • Fosters an inclusive environment for all students, no matter background, experience or ability, to grow confidence and self-esteem in a community that believes in them. • Helps foster independence through age-appropriate responsibilities that emphasize teamwork and encourage kids to take risks, fail forward & work through challenges in a supportive environment. • Provides arts education centered on engaging students’ creativity that can be applied to all areas of development, such as confidence in public speaking, compassion when a friend is struggling, and treating each other with respect despite differences. To truly understand the benefit, Dr. Ramsey shares this story from a staff member, based on direct feedback from a parent and student: “During one of PAA’s after-school outreach programs, I sat with a student in the principal’s office and told her she couldn’t continue in the production, due to her poor behavior choices. The student’s response was, “Everyone gives up on me.” I looked her in the eye and told her “I’m not giving up on you, but you need to make some serious changes before you can come back to PAA.” The decision was devastating because the acting was clearly her outlet. Shortly after that meeting, this young girl was suspended from school. “We decided to give her a second chance to enroll in ‘Lion King,’ a show she desperately wanted to be part of. We conveyed to her and her parents that there wasn’t room for poor choices. The brilliant thing is, that she showed us that she was worthy of a second chance. She was one of the most prepared students in the auditions and received a leading role. She gave it everything she had, made new friends, and was kind and respectful to everyone. This young lady continues to amaze and is becoming one of our leaders. Having this creative outlet gives her a safe place to be, of which we may never know the full impact. What I see fills my heart full of joy. “Further, the staff member observed: “PAA offered an environment where she felt respected, valued and encouraged to reach her full potential. A place where she found

the courage to heal. PAA is the center that keeps kids in balance. While home/school life can throw them off balance, PAA is a hub of stillness. Thank you for offering this incredible center for me and to children who want to know their worth and their full potential.” PAA frequently receives feedback from parents, such as the following (names changed): “PAA has undoubtedly changed the course of our lives. Susan is shy. She is introverted. She is an only child, thus often confused by the social dynamics of children her age. Your program has encouraged her to blossom on and off stage. Susan sees herself as a leader. She is confident to share her ideas. She understands the benefits of hard work and risk-taking. We cannot thank you enough, not only for starting your performing arts program but also for maintaining it under financial duress, self-doubt and all the other uncertainties.” “Sarah has developed a tremendous amount of confidence. She has always had a bit of anxiety but being on the stage and in practice has given her so much! She absolutely loves the staff and the other kids. The day

Annie (the musical) was over, she dug right into her audition material for Seussical. Her heart is full of love for this program!” And taking the final bow, this impactful letter from a student regarding their experience with PAA during the pandemic. This is the reason PAA does what they do. “I wanted to let you know I’ve never felt more safe or welcome at a place than I have at PAA. You and the directors at PAA have given my friends and me so much. The last year and a half have been so hard on everyone, and the loss of our theater lives was really hard. But you and every one of the adults at Performing Arts Academy dug deep and found ways for us to continue to do what we love and grow our skills and dream new dreams. This summer is one I will always remember because it made me feel passionate and alive again. “Thanks for not giving up on us, and many thanks to every adult who said we could when we thought we couldn’t; it makes all the difference.” To see PAA’s fall classes and performances, visit paacolorado.org

GIVE KIDS YOUR EAR Back to School Strategies for Mental Wellness ARTICLE BY BRITTANY LABORDE, LPC As we anticipate summer break drawing to a close, it is important to think about our students and the rigors associated with the return to school. In decades past, the greatest stressors most students faced were whether they would be able to meet fashion trends and obtain necessary classroom materials. In recent years, however, students cope with more than the typical pressures of bullies, making friends, and fitting in. Schools continue amidst pandemic challenges and threats of gun violence and mass shootings that appear to be increasing (Center for Homeland Defense and Security, 2022). As a therapist, one of the most consistent issues I hear from students is they lack a sense of control and unclear directions from authority figures. In order to support our students, it is important to remember how little choice they have, and in turn, give them the opportunity to have a voice and be heard. Often the support of active listening is underestimated. Research demonstrates that truly listening to another person is one of the most effective measures we can use to support others (Stickley and Freshwater, 2006).

TIPS FOR ACTIVE LISTENING: 1. Don’t interrupt. Active listening is more than just waiting for your turn to talk or trying to prove your point. 2. Stay focused. Minimize distractions by putting away phones, turning off the TV, lowering the radio, etc. 3. Ask questions. Not just of them, but also of yourself to make sure you are focusing on the actual issue. For example, ask yourself, what is the unmet need this person may have? 4. Paraphrase and summarize. It’s normal to misinterpret, so clarify and give the other person the opportunity to correct if necessary. While there are many other ways we can support our students as they anticipate returning to school, active listening and having open conversations about the realities of our world is an important place to start. 1. Knowing your dog’s unique body language is a crucial part of your relationship. A high raised tail could mean the dog is on alert, while a tail even with the body is a sign of contentment and feeling safe

2. A squeaky, high-pitched voice is like a treat to a dog to let them know they’re doing something right, while a low pitch, almost growl, will alert that they are doing something wrong

3. Assign your dog a blanket or towel if you want them to cuddle with you on the couch. This way when guests come over, they know if the blanket is on the floor, so are they

19th Annual Morgan Adams Concours d’Elegance Continues Mission to Help Kids in the Fight Against Cancer

THE EVENT The evening of August 27 will see Centennial Airport’s Signature Flight Support runways and parking area transformed into a stunning, world-class exhibit of vintage and exceptionally crafted vehicles, including airplanes, automobiles and motorcycles. Guests at the 19th Annual Morgan Adams Concours d’Elegance fundraiser will view more than 125 entrants including exotic and timeless classic street and race cars, more than 45 custom private jets and extraordinary period aircraft, and 50 or more highly coveted classic motorcycles, while enjoying a walkabout feast with samples from some of the area’s finest restaurants. Proceeds will benefit The Morgan Adams Foundation, a local 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to improving the quality of life and survival rates of children diagnosed with pediatric cancers. “The collection of machinery that we are able to put together every year really is staggering, when you think about it. The breadth of it all is pretty amazing when it all comes together,” said Joan Slaughter, co-founder and executive director of the Morgan Adams Foundation. “But beyond that, to know all of our guests and exhibitors and 125 volunteers come together to make a huge difference in how we care for the kids and teens with cancer who are the reason behind our work — that is what makes this an incredible evening like no other I know of anywhere.” Speaking of her appreciation for the exhibitors, Slaughter continued, “We will be showing a 1936 Delahaye Type 135CS from The Mullin Museum in California. This race car raced an enormous amount, and took 1st place at the 1938 Le Mans Grand Prix. It is amazing that it’s still in action today, after surviving eight owners, dozens of races, numerous crashes and a slight searing after its transportation truck caught fire once. And then we get to juxtapose that with a 2022 ‘Liquid Carbon’ Ford GT, a newly available, limited-edition Ford GT model that emphasizes

THE REASON Morgan Adams was 5-years old when she was diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiforme brain tumor. She faced her many treatments — surgery, chemotherapy, blood transfusions — with bravery and fortitude, never complaining. There were glimmers of success, so many achievements exceeding doctors’ expectations, but the family was devastated to learn the tumor had recurred. Morgan battled her cancer for 11 months before she succumbed to the disease. She was home with family when she passed peacefully on Nov. 7, 1998, at the age of 6. Two years after Morgan died, her parents Steven Adams and Joan Slaughter joined the Oncology Advisory Board at The Children’s

Hospital in Denver as a way to learn more about research and treatment options for childhood cancer, and to take a more active role in addressing the unmet needs in the field of pediatric cancer research. As a result of their work with the board, they asked a small group of friends to help host a fundraiser to benefit pediatric cancer research. Artma, now a hugely-anticipated biennial art auction, was first held in 2001. Based on that success and the response from the community, an additional fundraiser, the Morgan Adams Concours d’Elegance, began in 2003. Slaughter remembers, “When we started the event in 2003, we were one of the only ‘hangar parties’ in the country and it has been an incredibly special thing to build this event over the past 19 years. It has grown tremendously and we have had the privilege of sharing with our guests some truly exceptional machines, many never seen outside museums. It’s so exciting, and we’re incredibly grateful to have been

able to build something that our guests and patrons love, and that keeps them coming back year after year.”

THE PROMISE The Morgan Adams Foundation raises money and awareness on behalf of children with cancer. They use donations to directly fund pediatric cancer research and therapies that will improve survival rates and reduce the devastating side effects of cancer treatments. The foundation also provides financial support for families in need during their child’s treatment.
