Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind and relax. Some of the best summers spent are often not filled with constant activities and trips, but are those that reflect a slower pace and simple moments of enjoying those around us. Although the “lazy days of summer” isn’t always something we can attain with our packed schedules, it is so refreshing to take some time to slow down and enjoy some of the simple pleasures that remind us of our own childhoods. Some of the best times spent can be a backyard barbecue with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water, eating ice-cream on a hot summer day, or simply taking in the night sky with someone you love. In this issue, we wanted to share about some of the happenings around Highlands Ranch and Lone Tree this summer and ways to get out and explore together. In addition, it is our privilege to shine a light on local veterans in our community and to thank them for their service in honor of the Fourth of July. We have an immense respect for the men and women who make the selfless decision to serve and protect our nation. There is no greater sacrifice than to risk your life in order to protect others. The team at Lifestyle wants to thank all veterans, those still serving and all of their loved ones for your service. I hope you are able to enjoy some of the many things South Denver offers during these hot days of summer and that you make memories with those around you that you love. See you around town!

Terumo Technologies opens Manufacturing Facility in Highlands Ranch On May 25, Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies, one of Colorado's largest medical technology companies, inaugurated its newest manufacturing facility in Douglas County. The $250-million, 170,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art manufacturing plant will serve source plasma collections customers with single-use collection sets for the Rika Plasma Donation System (Rika). The new facility, the second in Colorado, will eventually employee 300 people, and is located off of Santa Fe at 3525 Carder Court.

Summer DI Ys ESSENTIAL OIL REMEDIES FOR THE DISCOMFORT OF FUN IN THE SUN I love the summer! Not just the warm weather, but also because it means flip flops, pedicures, traveling, cookouts, playing, swimming, enjoying nature and most importantly an overall relaxed feeling regardless of the day of the week. When the warmer weather brings increased outdoor activities, we expose our bodies to some not-so-great stuff. Our skin and hair take the brunt of our fun in the sun. On the next page, find my favorite summertime DIYs: from hair care, to skin care and bug bites to a yummy summer purefume blend. Let’s start at the top of our head with our hair. Whether you like swimming in a pool or playing in the ocean, chances are your hair has suffered from it. Chlorine and sun can make your hair a dry, brittle, frizzy, tangled mess. The common theme with all three hair DIYs is Rosemary and Lavender essential oils. Rosemary stimulates the scalp and promotes hair growth, and the chemical makeup has mild cleansing properties. As a bonus, the aroma is energizing and known to promote a renewing and rejuvenating atmosphere. Lavender is known for its calming and balancing properties. It can soothe occasional skin irritations too.

Regardless of what activity you choose, over-exposing our skin to the sun can cause major discomfort long after the sun has gone down. If you find your skin screaming for relief, give this After-Sun Spray a try. Your skin will almost immediately thank you and you’ll be surprised and the difference when you wake up in the morning. The next two DIYs almost go without saying, especially if you have kiddos still at home. Thankfully beautiful Colorado doesn’t come with a ton of bugs, but any amount of time outside will almost guarantee you a bite or two at some point this summer. Make sure you’ve pre-made this Bug Bite roller blend and throw it in your purse or car to have with you on-the-go. It will help tame the itching and soothe any discomforts. The last summer DIY is a wonderful pure-fume blend. Aside from the delicious aroma, the essential oils in this blend have a plethora of benefits. Hawaiian Sandalwood promotes healthy-looking and smooth skin. Ylang Ylang has nourishing and protective properties. Grapefruit has purifying benefits and provides an uplifting aroma. It’s topped off with Madagascar Vanilla, one of the most captivating and popular scents in the world. Wishing you and your family a memorable and [now] more pleasant summer.

HAIR DETANGLER

In a bowl mash together: • 1-2 bananas (depending on size) • 2 tablespoons honey • 2 drops each: Rosemary, Lavender, Peppermint & Cedarwood oill

In 8oz spray bottle mix: • 2-3 tablespoons hair conditioner • 8oz hot water • 10 drops Rosemary oil • 10 drops Lavender oil

Apply to damp hair and let sit for 15-20 minutes. Rise. Shampoo and condition as normal.

Allow to cool before using. Shake before each use. Spray on hair and brush through.

BOO-BOO SPR AY

AF TER-SUN SPR AY

In a 2oz spray bottle combine: • 10 drops each: Frankincense, Lavender & Tea Tree oils

In a 4oz spray bottle combine: • 10 drops Frankincense & Lavender oils • 5 drops Peppermint & Helichrysum oils • ½ oz carrier oil (fractionated coconut, jojoba, avocado)

Top with 1oz witch hazel and 1oz water. Spray on the boo-boo. Allow to dry and follow up with Myrrh Touch (Myrrh oil pre-diluted with fractionated coconut oil)

BUG BITE ROLLER BLEND In a 10mL roller bottle combine: • 10 drops Purify Cleaning Blend oil • 5 drops each: Lavender, Copaiba & Peppermint oil Top with carrier oil. Apply directly to irritations to help relieve itching.

Top with 1oz witch hazel and 2oz water. Shake well before use.

MERMAID HAIR

(SALT TEXTURE HAIR SPRAY) In 8oz spray bottle mix: • ½ c water • 1 tablespoon sea salt • 1 tablespoon aloe vera juice or gel • 10 drops Lavender or Rosemary oil • *optional ½ tsp argan or jojoba oil Shake before using. Apply on damp strands, scrunch, and let air dry.

“It leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” — Ibn Battuta Standing on the bridge of our ship taking in the sea or mountains, or walking the beaches among thousands of penguins, seals and seabirds, the same question came up time and again: How can we possibly describe the awesome beauty of Antarctica to others? We’re sometimes asked, “What do you do there?” I go blank while I run the movie of blue magnificence through my mind. Mere words cannot convey the sights, the sounds, the pure air,

the ethereal sense that this is a very, very special place. Imagine large numbers of diverse wildlife, snow-capped peaks rising mightily from the sea, radiant blue skies and the sea moving from azure to a faded blue to cobalt and back again. South Georgia Island, Antarctica, and Elephant Island are pristine in beauty, packed with wildlife and are an awe-inspiring natural wonderland. This was our second trip to Antarctica, but our first time at South Georgia and Elephant Islands. We’re in the planning stages to return in 2024. Why, you ask? My wife Carol and I have traveled the world extensively and this may just be the most beautiful place we’ve visited. As a professional photographer, I had two cameras going most of the time and even then, left too many photos behind. This is not a “last-minute travel” destination — it’s hard to get to. Sailing about the South Atlantic Ocean and the various seas within can be challenging. We had 25-30foot swells some days/nights, but around the islands the seas were calm. There’s also significant flight time: Denver to Houston, to Buenos Aires to Ushuaia. Is it worth it? Only if you’d like to experience a place like none other. People who choose to live in Colorado have a well-known, and well-earned, reputation for their love of the great outdoors. The homeowners of this Elite Landscape & Outdoor Living project had a vision for an outdoor oasis just a step from their own backdoor with a focus on the ability to gather as a family and to entertain in the fresh Colorado air, no matter what season. They chose Elite to help transform their dated, mostly unusable, slanted backyard into a functional entertainment, relaxation, and recreational space. This project began with a handful of ideas. According to the family, “We wanted a space that was great for family dinners, grilling out and entertaining. We knew we wanted a grilling space, fire pit, a sitting area, bar, TV, music and an overhang.” By providing the homeowners with CAD designs and numerous material samples, Elite ensured this project met the entertaining, outdoor lifestyle envisioned by the owners.

Elite’s mission statement is to create extraordinary outdoor spaces, deliver exceptional quality, and to always exceed their client’s expectations. Elite’s project manager recommended a retaining wall along the back edge of the property which allowed for the installation of a large, level grass area. This area maximizes the use of the space and complements the owner’s goals of entertaining as well as visually extending the yard. While the retaining wall is an important contribution to the success of this project, the homeowner said, “I think the fire pit is everyone’s favorite… and the big screen outdoor TV that Dad can watch sports on, while the girls are inside consuming the latest Bachelorette episode.”

The custom designed gabled roof structure with engineered roof trusses ensures the outdoor kitchen and the dining area can be used year-round. At 24’ x 18’ the patio cover provides ample protection for the built-in grill, bar, seating, and outdoor television. The soffit, trim and roof were designed to match the design of the home and the custom tongue and groove cedar ceiling is a beautiful feature. The homeowner continued, “The covered patio and furniture invites us outside daily. Prior to this project, we wouldn’t spend much time, certainly not daily, in our backyard. It’s Grill-out Season! Who doesn’t love a great summer potluck? Easy grilled meats, sometimes right out of the package, condiments galore, and a mayonnaise-y side dish to go alongside. This summer, step out of your summer BBQ rut and try this tomato burrata peach salad or grilled corn salad. Is vodka lemonade a side dish? We think so, and included it here. These fresh, easy, no-stove side dishes will compliment a humble hot dog, a hearty tri-tip or elegant grilled salmon.

P I T C HE R V O D K A LEMONADE YIELD: makes 6 cocktails INGREDIENTS • 48 ounces homemade lemonade (or store-bought) • 12 ounces vodka • Ice, for serving • 1 lemon, sliced thinly • Fresh mint for garnish INSTRUCTIONS 1. Make the lemonade or pour storebought in a pitcher. 2. Add vodka and lemon slices (can be made the day before). 3. To serve: pour cocktail over ice and garnish with fresh mint.

TOMATO PE ACH BURR ATA SAL AD YIELD: Serves 6

INGREDIENTS • A few big pinches of Kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 1 teaspoon dried oregano or 2 teaspoons fresh oregano • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil • 2 large heirloom tomatoes or large plum tomatoes, or cherry tomatoes. (about 2 1/2 pounds total) • Two peaches • 8 ounces mozzarella pearls or small balls • 4 ounces burrata cheese • 1/4 cup torn fresh basil leaves plus additional whole leaves for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Combine salt through olive oil. 2. Place the burrata cheese round on a platter. Arrange the tomatoes, peaches and mozzarella balls around cheese. 3. Drizzle with dressing from bowl. Sprinkle with more salt and pepper. Garnish with additional basil leaves and serve.

INGREDIENTS • 2 ears corn, grilled and cut from the cob • 1 small shallot, thinly sliced into rings • 1/4 cup fresh feta or goat cheese, crumbled • 3 sprigs basil, leaves removed and torn • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar • Black pepper to taste • Jalapeño, thinly sliced (optional)I
