Douglas County Libraries announces the Magic of Summer 2022 reading program. Pre-registration for all ages is now open at DCL.org, with program kick off June 4. “We have lots of tricks and treats this year, so we hope our community will join us to celebrate and have fun reading all summer long,” said DCL Special Events Supervisor Kristen Kallio. Sky Ridge Medical Center Named Top Spine Hospital Healthgrades released its 2022 hospital rankings of 431 top hospitals in 34 states. The consumer transparency organization evaluated nearly 4,500 hospitals in total. One hundred hospitals made the list for excellence in spine surgery, with Sky Ridge as one of five named in Colorado. Their spine doctors are specialized in orthopedic care and/or neurological care, and these physicians are experts when it comes to spine, back and neck care, including common diagnosis like Osteoporosis, Sciatica and disc disorders

Lone Tree's 2022 State of the City Address On May 10, Lone Tree Mayor Jackie Millet gave the annual State of the City address at the Lone Tree Arts Center. She spoke about the new Ridgegate development on the east side of I-25, and the profound benefit it will bring to Lone Tree and surrounding communities. The project includes three new residential neighborhoods, RTD stations, a city center with retail, business and mixed-use space, as well as parks, trails, open spaces, and a high school career and technical center for Douglas County.

Directions Step 1: Cut the chair stringers at a 90-degree angle at the foot. Attach the 31 3/4 arms with 2 1/2 inch screws to one of the 19 1/2 inch 2x4 board. Build the arms the same way. Step 2: Drill pocket holes on both ends of two of the 19 1/2 inch 2x4s. Attach with the 2 1/2 inch screws to the frame of chair. Step 3: Lay 22 1/2 inch seat boards to the frame of chair with 1 1/2 inch screws. Screw three per side and leave 1/4 inch gap in between for water drainage. Step 4: Place one of the 19 1/2 inch boards behind the chair back for support and attach the 32 3/4 boards flush to the bottom of the stringer and attach through the legs of chair with 2 /12 inch screws. Repeat with the other side then remove the support board. Step 5: Attach a 19 1/2 inch 2x4 to base of chair in the back with 2 1/2 inch screws and then attach the seat back 19 1/2 inch 1x10s to the chair back using 1 1/2 inch screws and leaving a gap for drainage. Sand and stain with a good exterior stain. When complete, sand and finish with an appropriate exterior finish or paint. Do you have a car guy in your life? I do. Anyone who knows a car enthusiast knows about their obsession with continually upgrading their collection. Aided by the rocketing classic car market, and fueled by pandemic boredom, free time and nostalgia, the bumper increase in value for these cars surprised even the most seasoned niche car owners. For many automotive aficionados, owning a Porsche represents the intersection of luxury meets function meets form.

1977 Porche 911S According to the NY Times article by Yeager, “Rather than back away from classic automobiles because of the pandemic, buyers flocked to them, sometimes in stunning numbers. Online auto sales and auctions… claimed new records.” When the owner discovered this car was on the market in 2021, he made an immediate offer and caught the next flight to L.A. to buy it, recognizing this model is exceedingly rare. Shortly after this car was manufactured, the United States added new emissions requirements. The modified exhaust required to accommodate these regulations caused the original motor to overheat and eventually fail. Many owners decided the cost to rebuild an engine wasn’t worth it, and many were neglected. As a result, there are not many of this year’s make and model on the road, making them desirable to collectors today. This car sold in 1977 for about $20,000. The value dipped into the $8,000 range in the late ‘80s, but is now worth somewhere approaching $70,000 given its pristine, original condition, no rust and low miles.

Like aircraft, lawn mowers and motorcycles, Porsche’s engines until 1989 were air-cooled, allowing the vehicles to be light in weight, leading to greater efficiency & motor longevity. They are now water-cooled.
The motor’s nickname is the Boxer. The flat design eliminates almost all of the vibration of other motors. The pistons move horizontally, one at a time, corresponding with the opposite side.

Porsche 911s are sometimes called “widow makers.” Since the engine is behind the rear axle, all of the weight is in the back of the car, creating the “pendulum effect.” This requires the driver to accelerate through turns, which is the opposite of most driver’s instincts.

INSPIRE, LEAD, MENTOR Vu Tran is a Highlands Ranch entrepreneur. He is a franchise owner, real estate investor, former Marine, author, national speaker, and dedicated mentor. At 34 years old, his business accomplishments are impressive, but that is only part of his story. Vu is a Colorado native. He grew up in the Sloans Lake area of Denver. In the 1990s the Sloans Lake neighborhood was a bit rougher than it is today. His parents immigrated to the United States from Vietnam in the early 1980s, and with two older sisters and five younger brothers, Vu remembers feeling a sense of responsibility for his family from a very young age. In what Vu calls “car talks” with his dad, there was a theme of his dad emphasizing hard work, being thankful for the opportunities you are given, and being responsible. His dad owned a grocery store near the downtown Denver Auraria Campus — again back when that area was not somewhere you wanted to be after dark. Vu distinctly remembers his dad’s ability to get along with everyone and his respect for all of his customers. And although business associates, employees, and investors now describe Vu as a mentor, leader, and inspiration, when he looks back to his younger years, he felt like he had

trouble fitting in. As a teenager he was friends with the skateboarders, the athletes, the troublemakers, the smart kids, the nerdy kids. But didn’t truly belong in any of those groups. Vu recalls, “After high school I hit a boiling point. I realized I had to make decisions that would affect the rest of my life.” Vu chose the Marines. He is a 10-year Marine veteran, a five-time recipient of the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for Outstanding Leadership, and a 2012 Afghanistan combat veteran. His leadership training and experience with the military reinforced all the lessons he saw modeled by his family and heard from a very young age. This carries through in his approach as an entrepreneur. He can immediately list the three Core Values of the Marine Corps and their 13 Leadership Traits. “Those two structures of values and leadership have helped me determine what I need to do as an individual and as a leader,” Vu says. During the interview with Highlands Ranch City Lifestyle magazine, the only question that didn’t result in a detailed, lengthy, rapid-fire response was, “What are you most proud of?” And there’s a reason for that. Vu isn’t proud. He is an accomplished

businessman, public speaker, mentor and leader. What he isn’t is prideful or complacent. After a pause, he answered the “proud” question by repeatedly using the words opportunity and grateful. The military, in particular, is an opportunity that he is grateful for experiencing. He is also grateful for the multiple business opportunities that he has chosen to pursue. One of Vu’s most recent business accomplishments is the successful launch of the Highlands Ranch location of I Heart Mac & Cheese. Opened in October 2021, the restaurant on Sergeant Jon Stiles Drive has been popular with busy families, local high school students, and anyone craving carbs. But more important to Vu than the financial success of the business is his opportunity to interact with the community. His employees are excited to be there and he genuinely engages with them, cares how they’re doing, and wants to

know what he can do to help; which is exactly the same way he treats every single customer who walks through the door. Vu is also a franchise owner in the upcoming opening of multiple Colorado locations of the fast-casual chain restaurant EverBowl, which serves “super food” bowls. Drew Brees, retired NFL quarterback, is also an investor, franchisee and brand ambassador. Leading by example as a businessman and remaining focused on his commitment to mentoring and being a positive influence are important, lifelong goals for Vu. He summed it up by saying, “I want to consistently show people that it is possible to succeed. And it is possible for everyone. I would love for a reader to finish this article and realize they can achieve more. I believe, in business, there are only two decisions: Things you do or things you regret not doing. Hard Work, Find the Win-Win Mike Heflebower, Funeral Director/Owner Heflebower Funeral and Cremation Services My parents taught me that hard work pays off. It does. They had a huge influence on me, as they grew up with very little and worked hard to make a great life. I watched as they helped people and volunteered in our community. The funeral industry has long hours, as we are available to support our clients 24 hours a day, sometimes at the expense of time with our own families. Despite this, this occupation is rewarding in so many ways, it allows us to be on the front lines of caring for people. My wife’s hard work and dedication to our family is so inspiring, and I’ve been blessed to have worked with some amazing individuals in the funeral industry. They’ve all helped me become who I am today. I always try to take the best from everything that happens — finding the “win-win” that helps bring light to all situations.
Service to Others, Say Yes to Opportunity Jim Chavez, Executive Director Latin American Educational Foundation Looking back at the earlier years of my career, I was so focused on working long hours, always pushing to accomplish more, achieve higher positions, obtaining that “corner office,” and my own personal gain. Looking back, that work wasn’t always fulfilling or satisfying. I would have liked to recognize earlier just how meaningful and rewarding it is to help others. Today, I enjoy helping younger students and young professionals, including my staff and teammates, further their careers and opportunities. I appreciate the lessons I have learned from our community elders and mentors who helped connect me to opportunities to serve. I believe good things happen when you say “Yes.” Saying yes to opportunities often leads to meeting new and interesting people, tackling new challenges, and personally rewarding experiences. Collaborative Mindset, Different Perspectives Javion Blake, Founder Jus Chill International I believe in the importance of being confident, humble and developing a habit of exploring other people’s perspectives. Several years ago, I began to consider our global challenges, and became certain that the problem wasn’t a lack of resources, but a misalignment of resources. Poverty and lack of development isn’t a technical problem, but instead a mindset and inaccessibility to information. I believe this so strongly, but I didn’t make progress until I understood that people and their perception must be at the center of the solution, regardless of whether their perception is accurate or not. I realized, for example, that while I was working toward thriving, many people were just thinking about survival. I learned the significance of thinking from a collaborative mindset over a competitive one. As the saying states, if you want to go fast then go alone, but if you want to go far then go with others.
Embrace Failure as Opportunity, Take Risks Mark Gaudreault, Founder Trubucha and Tru Food & Beverage So many lessons learned! Work hard, be relentless, persevere and don’t be afraid to fail. Much learning occurs when we fail. Be compassionate, show empathy and work from a mindset of abundance rather than scarcity. Be grateful for every opportunity and embrace it even if it scares you. Sophia’s Lemonade was born because at age 5, our oldest daughter wanted to work at farmers’ markets. I felt this was a great way for her to learn how business works, and teach her practical skills for math and communicating. Two of my greatest mentors are my children. Every day I want to build a better world/community for them and I want them to experience the successes and failures that we all have on a daily basis. Not just in business but in life. As the parable of the Chinese farmer says: Maybe so, Maybe not. We’ll see.
