Home. It is meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love, and a shelter from the outside world—a place where you can let your guard down and just be. Some homes feel just like that, and some can be filled with conflict and strife. It is never too late to change the climate of our homes. In a world that can be cruel, let the home be a place where we build each other up. Make a continual effort to teach with love, correct with love and express love everyday. Take time to enjoy all the small moments with family instead of getting caught up in all the daily tasks that can steal our attention away—to be truly present when spending time with our family instead of dividing our attention with our technology or to-do list. Although we usually aren’t perfect at accomplishing these things, it is worthwhile to strive for it everyday. March is our Home and Design issue. Creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in isn’t easy. The memories that are made within the walls of our home are what lasts regardless if our home has the latest trends or if it hasn’t been updated in years. While it is fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. In this year’s Home issue, we take a peek inside some local homes that boast beautiful designs that I hope will leave you inspired. From our home to yours, we wish you love, peace and happiness.

business monthly A round-up of exciting news from local businesses.

Sedalia's FarmBox Foods Unveils Plans for Hydroponic Fodder Farm At the 2022 National Western Stock Show, FarmBox Foods in Sedalia announced the development of a hydroponic system that enables ranchers to grow nutrient-rich feed onsite year-round. The shipping container-based fodder farm will be sold mid year. Fodder is nutrient-rich feed for livestock. The dietary supplement increases the weight of livestock, promotes the production of better-quality milk, and decreases methane output. It also reduces feed costs, hydrates livestock, and eliminates the need to transport feed over long distances.

Local Author Announces New Publishing Venture “First, think. Second, believe. Third, dream. Finally, dare." AJ Kikumoto of Highlands Ranch shares this philosophy from Walt Disney. She looked to it when she started writing books inspired by her own children's struggle with Apraxia of Speech in "Zoey's Great Adventures." When publishing these books became a challenge, she founded Queen's Publishing to assist other aspiring authors to self-publish their stories, especially children's books, so that all stories can be told. A day doesn’t pass when I don’t meet another ‘plant parent’ around our beautiful town. I am not sure if I knew until the last year that my twelve plus year hobby or as my husband likes to call an obsession had an identity. Loosely defined, a plant parent is someone who looks after plants with as much care and devotion as they would a child or a pet. This trend has really taken off in recent years and it’s easy to see why. Houseplants offer us a connection to the outdoor world and let us experience the satisfaction of nurturing life. When I adopted my first plant I was just looking to compliment my new home’s décor. I had torn a page out of Architectural Digest with a picture of a room that was designed with a beautiful plant. I found that plant from the magazine at the local florist in historic downtown Castle Rock and happily drove it home like a new born baby. My original reasons for plants in my home where to make my spaces look beautiful. However, I quickly discovered that the plants were improving the air quality in my home. That’s when I started my deep dive into researching the other benefits of plants in the home. It's easy to assume that 'healthy plants' refers to plants that are thriving, indoors and out. Actually, it's a term that covers plants that benefit our health. While the health benefits of plant-based diets are well documented, new research uncovers the lesser-known uses of the nature around us. I started asking the local owners of our area floral shops, garden centers, nurseries and garden club members every possible question I could think of. One thing about plant people is they are happy to share their knowledge and welcome every and all questions. It’s one of the happiest group of people to be around. They are natural born nurturers. So don’t be afraid when you are getting started to seek advice from experts and fellow plant enthusiasts.

To get started with filling your home with some of your very own healthy greens, here are some of my top recommendations for areas in your life that you want to focus on. If that be mental clarity or better sleep. There is a plant out there for you, just don’t give up. Growing plants is a labor of love. As such, there’s bound to be some trial and error involved and some mistakes along the way. Be patient with yourself and remember that you’re getting better each day. Have fun on this adventure, you are not only filling your home with beauty, but you are actively improving your wellbeing and those you live with.

PLANTS THAT REDUCE ANXIETY Lavender is known for its stress-relieving qualities – it slows down the heart rate and lowers blood pressure to greatly reduce stress. This is why its scent can often be found in lotions and sprays. Snake Plant is also believed to reduce anxiety, improve respiratory problems and cure the symptoms of a headache

PLANTS THAT HELP YOU SLEEP Not getting enough sleep can have a huge impact on many aspects of life, from our health to our work abilities to our social lives. Whether you struggle to drift off or are easily disturbed in the night, keeping a potted Aloe Vera plant beside your bed could help you see the night through, as it produces oxygen at night to combat insomnia and improve overall sleep quality. Jasmine flower is also believed to reduce anxiety levels which in turn will help you drift off to sleep, and the gentle scent will keep you in a deep sleep throughout the night.

Peace lilies are also believed to improve air quality by as much as 60 percent and true to their name, bring with them a sense of peace and relaxation.

PLANTS THAT INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY Having plants in a home office can increase productivity. Not only are they found to reduce stress and fatigue but they may aid memory retention. Bamboo Palm is known for its ability to fight indoor air pollution, promoting clear-thinking and easy breathing. Another plant is Golden Pothos which removes air toxins and absorbs unpleasant smells – the perfect plant to keep by the fridge or in the kitchen.

PLANTS THAT CLEAR THE AIR Removing harmful toxins such as benzene, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and xylene will keep both you and your home happy and healthy. Rubber Plant and Peace Lilies are both incredibly effective at purifying the air around you. Rubber Plants are great for removing harmful toxins, particularly formaldehyde, and these plants become more efficient at cleaning the air as time goes on. Peace Lilies are also believed to improve air quality by as much as 60 percent and true to their name, bring with them a sense of peace and relaxation.

PLANTS THAT FIGHT INFECTION Herbal remedies have been used to fight infection for centuries and still stand the test of time today. Before pharmacies were readily available, Red Clover was used in teas and ointments to treat coughs, colds and skin irritations.

Do the words ‘Rec Room’ conjure images of a 1970’s unfinished basement with concrete floors, grandma’s old floral couch, exposed framing and insulation? Not so with this Highlands Ranch basement finish by FBC Remodel. The space has the sophistication of a main-level living space, with the comfort and hygge of a mountain lodge. Designed for 21st Century living, it includes a wine cellar tasting room, well-appointed kitchenette, double sided bar, lounge area and space for games. The exposed brick columns add warmth to the otherwise modern and sleek styling, as do the wooden stools, floating shelves, and dark stained French doors. The wine room includes innovative houndstooth-like slanted bottle storage on the wall, and the coppery-brown leather bar chairs call you to sit and sip. The design allows for versatile use of the space, recreation, leisure and entertaining, everything from movie nights to Super Bowl parties to vintage wine tastings work in this space. “Our basement was unfinished and used primarily for storage. We wanted a space where we could entertain guests. We also incorporated a wine room that is a favorite place to enjoy a glass of wine with friends,” the homeowners say. “Our basement fit so perfectly with what we wanted the space to be. It is the most popular space in the house.” FBC’s philosophy is “Build Joy,” which drives all the work they do, be it a basement like this one, their business model or employee culture. Their customers are often surprised to find they enjoy the design-build process as much as the finished space. In fact, this customer had such a great experience, their adult daughter went into design and now works for FBC. The joy they built grew out of the re-designed space and back into their own business. March has us itching for outdoor entertaining, but our unpredictable Colorado spring makes it difficult. Time for a simple but elegant dinner party. Smoking meat provides a warm weather vibe, but can be done even if there is snow outside. Add a simple roasted beet-orange-goat cheese salad and an apple tart. (Buy from your local bakery. We wont tell.) Pair with an Argentinian Tempranillo or a full-bodied style Pinot Noir.

directions: Mix all spices and apply liberally to the tri-tip. Allow to rest in the refrigerator for 24 hours before smoking over grapevines.

tip: Grapevines can be sourced directly from a vineyard or online. They impart a tart, fruity flavor and are suitable for quicker smoked meats and poultry. Use sparingly and combine with another fruitwood to avoid bitterness..

Aspen & The Roaring Fork Valley, an Ideal Way to Spend a Winter-Into-Spring Holiday

Chamonix Charm, Colorado

Conditions 32

T R AV E L J OU R N A L | TR AVE L

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KENDALL HOULTON Aspen at night

Traveling to Chamonix, France, was not feasible last year so my family opted for an in-state, Colorado ski vacation. Visiting Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley is an ideal way to spend any holiday break. Home to the world’s first World Championships held outside of Europe, Aspen is renowned for its incredibly dreamy winter experiences and celebrity sightings. And this year is even more special because @AspenSnowmass is celebrating 75 years of skiing, offering guests four world-class mountains to choose from: Aspen Mountain, Snowmass, Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk. These mountains offer a wide variety of terrain perfect for everyone from beginner to expert and this year’s celebratory events include Luminescence in Snowmass, Winterskol in Aspen, XGames at Buttermilk and so much more!

RUNWAY TO SLOPESIDE IN MINUTES As a group of 10, we opted to stay in a vacation rental outside of Carbondale, between Glenwood Springs and Aspen. We chose this location as a home base because within 35 minutes we were either on the slopes at Aspen Snowmass or Sunlight Ski Resort near Glenwood Springs. With nearly 730 skiable acres and a 2,000 vertical foot drop, Sunlight offers big skiing at an affordable price. And you can enjoy the best après-ski fun at the world’s largest mineral hot springs pool, Glenwood Hot Springs Resort. We found that riding the local Roaring Fork Transit buses was convenient for getting to the slopes. These buses run the entirety of the Roaring Fork Valley and can get you around easily and many (but not all) routes are free. Free routes include all City of Aspen routes and all Aspen to/from Snowmass Village routes. Seniors 65 and older and children 5 and under always ride free. The Village Shuttle within Snowmass Village is also free to ride. RFTA’s real time bus information is available in an easy-to-use mobile app called Transit.

WHERE TO STAY? When you’re looking for the perfect place to rest your head after a day on the slopes, look no further than a vacation rental outfit for your accommodations — you’ll find an amazing selection of great places to stay in the Roaring Fork Valley. We found “Aspenwood,” our vacation

On the Mountain

rental home in Carbondale on airbnb. Located on the banks of the Roaring Fork River, this four-bedroom, threeand-a-half-bathroom home is a 35 min drive to Aspen/Snowmass and Sunlight in Glenwood Springs. This beautiful river compound was like our own tiny resort without the crowds. With unsurpassed views of the Roaring Fork River, two fireplaces in the Great Room including radiant heating, a gourmet kitchen with amenities fit for a professional chef, and an eight-person Sundance Optima hot tub overlooking the river, we wished we could have stayed longer. For planning, you’ll want to check out how easy it is to drive to your accommodation, as some rental homes are difficult to reach in wintertime without 4-wheel drive. Luckily, Aspenwood was located down a regularly snow plowed road and the rental

property had driveway snowmelt making the home easily accessible during snowstorms. There was also a bus stop 2 minutes away and we could simply hoist our skis onto the exterior bus ski carriers, leaving the driving to someone else. And our host offered to drive us if we didn’t feel like walking to the bus stop. We love SuperHosts.

multi-destination ski passes including the Ikon Pass, Mountain Collective Pass, and Colorado Ski Country’s Gold Pass. If you need to rent skis or snowboards, Stapleton Ski Shop and Up Snowboard Rentals and Miller Sports is located in the heart of Aspen. Or better yet, reserve your skis/ snowboards with Ski Butlers who deliver all your equipment rentals directly to your accommodations. We discovered @RaggedMountainSports, an outdoor gear store located in Carbondale that offered a plethora of used and new gear that residents donate from all over the Aspen region. This was a great shop for friendly customer service vibes in the gearhead affluent ski world if you quickly need to grab a thermal base layer or a helmet. MINER TEAM. MAJOR RESULTS.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS ARE SAYING “This was the second time we used Bob and his team to buy a place and I could not recommend a better, more knowledgeable team. The market is crazy right now and Bob was able to guide us through the process so that we could easily and quickly purchase our dream home. Bob stepped in to make sure that we were not stressed or having to deal with any issues ourselves.10/10 recommend Bob Miner!”
