WINTER RECREATION SPORTS COMPLEX GIVES NORTHWEST DOUGLAS COUNTY WARM WINTER RECREATION OPTIONS
As the most fit state in the U.S., Coloradans don’t stop moving their bodies in the cold months. The newest facility in Northern Douglas County to serve Highlands Ranch and Lone Tree is the massive South Suburban Sports Complex. The Complex provides indoor ice, turf and court space that is scarce in the south metro area SSPRD.org.
1. pickle ball The indoor Pickle Ball Courts are one of the more unique features the new complex offers. Pickleball has taken the recreation crowd by storm with its similarity to tennis, ping pong and badminton. Pickleball enthusiasts can play their favorite pastime even when snow blankets the outside court.
2. indoor hockey Anyone who plays indoor hockey is painfully aware of the limited availability of ice, evidenced by 5:30am practice times. The Complex provides 3 sheets of ice, hosting both youth and adult leagues.
3. soccer Another scarce resource, indoor soccer turf, is also available here. They provide two turfs, available both to local soccer clubs, as well as general public.

Local Community Herbalist Shares Her Secrets to Wellness in the Winter Months ARTICLE BY SONJA NIX | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEANNINE FREEMAN
European herbal tradition believes the linden tree protects against bad luck, lightning strikes, repels harmful spirits and its leaves and flowers hold healthful benefits. So, when Kirsten Dehmlow elevated her lifelong interest in plants and gardening to train as a community herbalist, she looked to the linden tree in her back yard for inspiration. As an herbalist, she employs herbs, plants, and other foodstuffs to support overall health and treat specific illness, using food as medicine. “I have done many of my herbal trainings while sitting under the linden tree, and when I was looking for a name for my business, this felt right. I like to hold as many classes as I can under my linden tree,” Kirsten says. “I even use linden in my calming tea.”
Kirsten shares her immune support recipes here for cold, flu and Covid season. Elderberry Syrup can be taken daily as a tonic, adding additional doses when feeling ill. Fire Cider is also taken daily to help fight off illness. To make it easy to incorporate into a daily diet, use as a base for a salad dressing or tossed on cooked greens. Drink 2-4 cups of Immune Tea for medicinal benefits at the first sign of illness until symptoms improve. You can purchase kits for the Elderberry Syrup and Immune Tea, and find out more about Kirsten, her products and workshops at @undertheindentreeco or underthelindentreeco.com CONTINUED >

Elderberry Syrup INGREDIENTS • 2 cups dried elderberries • 4 1/2 cups water • 1/4 cup astragulus
• • •
1/4 cup dried ginger 4 cinnamon sticks 1 cup honey
DIRECTIONS Combine water with herbs and simmer for 20 min. Strain and reduce liquid by simmering covered for 30-40 min. Add honey. Let cool, bottle and refrigerate. Will last 2-4 months. There are many variations to this recipe — have fun experimenting. Adults take 1 Tbsp/day, children 1 tsp/day. Double when feeling ill.
Immune Tea INGREDIENTS • 1 oz nettles • 1 oz marshmallow root • 1 oz astragulus • 1 oz ashwaghanda • 1 oz peppermint
• • • •
0.5 oz elderberry 0.5 oz rose hips 0.25 oz licorice root 0.25 oz ginger
DIRECTIONS Measure out ingredients using a kitchen scale. Mix together & store in airtight container for up to a year. When brewing, steep 1 Tbsp of tea mixture in 8 oz boiling water for 10 minutes to ensure full potency. Drink 3-4 cups a day for medicinal benefits upon first sign of illness.
Fire Cider INGREDIENTS • 1/2 - 1 med. yellow onion - chopped • 4-5 garlic cloves - chopped • 3-4 tbsp freshly grated ginger root • 3-4 tbsp freshly grated horseradish root • 3-4 tbsp freshly grated turmeric root
• • • • •
1/4 organic lemon 2 tbsp astragalas root 1-2 fresh rosemary sprigs Apple cider vinegar honey
DIRECTIONS Combine the onion, garlic, ginger, horseradish, turmeric and lemon a wide-mouthed quart sized jar. Cover with Apple Cider vinegar. Place a piece of wax paper on top before adding the metal lid. Place in a warm location and let sit for 3-4 weeks. Shake every couple days or when you remember. Strain, discard spent herbs. Add honey to taste, about a 1/4 cup. Take 1-2 tbsp at the first sign of a cold and repeat dose every 3-4 hours until symptoms subside. Can be combined with water, warm or cold, if easier to drink. You may also add other herbs, fruits and vegetables: beets, radish, orange, apple, shiitake mushrooms, cayenne powder, echinacea, burdock root, etc. Can be kept at room temperature, or place in refrigerator to help with preservation of up to a year. *Rosemary Gladstar created the original recipe of Fire Cider in the 1970’s.

Roughly the size of Maine, boasting a population of 340,000 people, 800,000 sheep, 80,000 horses, 10,000 waterfalls and 32 volcanic systems, Iceland is a busy place. The island is a geological romper room, straddling two continental tectonic plates, Iceland sits on the North American continent and the Eurasian Continent. See for yourself at Thingvellir National Park, 26 miles east from Reykjavik where you can stand on them at the same time. From Denver it’s a direct flight on Iceland Air to Reykjavík, (7 hours, basically a two-movie flight). From there the journey began. Traveling tip: Rent your car away from the airport, it will save you money, also, consider a camper van. We logged 1,500 miles in our much dented, rusty, rented car (which we came to adore) circumnavigating the island on the Ring Road. Given our perpetual state of wanderlust, we veered off the main route to do some additional exploring. Here’s what we discovered: the word “wow” was used to a level of ridiculousness. Each turn on the single lane roads — with one lane bridges — evoked a “Wow . . . Look at this!” There were literally thousands of waterfalls, mist-shrouded mountains, snow-capped peaks, glaciers, ice caps, verdant hillsides, strange moonscapes from volcanic activity, idyllic farms and the ever-present blue-green ocean. What can you expect? Iceland is very expensive, I shudder to think of my credit card bill. They’re a cashless society, we had no

currency in our 10 days. That said, there are some restrooms that require coins. Masks were required indoors. Icelanders are fluent in English (American English) and learn English and Danish early on. They’re not the friendliest people you may come across. That’s not a criticism, just be prepared. The country is clean, you won’t find roadsides packed with plastic items or assorted trash. Take a water bottle, and fill it from the sink, yes, it’s that clean. When traveling, quadruple drive time. Our 2.5-hour drive from Reykjavik to Vik (116 miles) turned into 10 hours. Remember single lane bridges, and the waterfalls that require several pictures, the Icelandic ponies that need petting, or the glacier fields that need exploring. I recommend two days in Reykjavik, one day to explore the city, which is much larger than I anticipated and feels like Seattle. Day two, drive the Golden Circle, it’s a snowball throw from the capital. Then find yourself on the Ring Road. Our tour guide was “Rick Steves Iceland Guide Book” it was terrific and his research saved us money. The Cold Plunge
Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 40

Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. Mike and Ryan both previously owned their own flotation therapy centers. Early pioneers in that space, they discovered they shared many of the same values, business practices and interests. Therefore, the formulation of a business together became inevitable. With finding himself feeling sick on a consistent basis, Ryan found solace in cold plunging. With an engineering background and having built his own chest freezer, Mike found cold plunging tubs on the market unattainable. Together, they set out to create a more realistic solution for half the price. “Everything else on the market was $10k, and it’s not really achievable for a lot of people,” they say. But as the business began to set in, so did the 2020 pandemic, forcing both to shut down their primary businesses, which turned out to be a blessing. It offered time for Mike to begin designing the product that would look, feel and cost significantly different. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. Everyone from homeowners to commercial businesses are hopping on the train to add these beautiful accessories into their space. Hot or cold environment, home or commercial studio—the tubs were built with design and longevity in mind. “The one thing I’m still bullish on is I know it works,” Ryan says. “Anyone who gets a unit from us, their true testimony is that this would go onto their top three things they would NOT give up for their health and wellness. Right now the cold plunge is “kind of trendy, it’s kind of cool, but it’s effective. Two to three minutes, or even 60 seconds a day—there are very few things out there that give you the return you get from this.” The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Ryan also knows over the next one to two years they are going to learn so much about cold plunging. As more people do it, there will be more anecdotal data and validity to the practice.

Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
