Welcome to our Winter Revels issue, our way of dancing into the holidays. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what Highlands Ranch and Lone Tree have to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We're proud to present our interview with hometown girl Ingrid Andress, who grew up in Highlands Ranch and is a rising star in the country music world. Her music oftentimes defies genres, and she embodies what we love about Colorado, an independent spirit. During our interview, Ingrid was on the road with her band somewhere on a Florida highway, 86 degrees outside. Here in South Denver, our first snow of the season was blanketing roadways and lawns. Her voice brightened at the weather report. She said in all her travels around the country, she realizes how Colorado prepped her for adventure, whether she was hiking, skiing or exploring the great outdoors with friends and family or on solo trips. "It taught me about my own independence, and what one can do on their own." We also share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community who need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy and love.

DCL Volunteer Named Colorado Volunteer of the Year

The Park Center Celebrates Chinese New Year

The Colorado Association of Libraries selected Douglas County Libraries volunteer Sarah Laatsch as its 2022 Volunteer of the Year. A volunteer since January 2016, she is driven by a love for the library, its role in the community, and the people who visit. According to Volunteer Services Coordinator Kim McClintock, “Sarah does the work of multiple volunteers. If Sarah is working on a project, it will be done with accuracy and efficiency, and, most of all, love.”

Local non-profit Chinese language school and adoption agency, The Park Adoption Community Center in Centennial, will be hosting its annual Chinese New Year celebration on Jan. 20, 2023. Established in January 2019, the center provides post-adoption educational services and responsive support programs. The Joyous Chinese Cultural School and Adopteen are two of the programs that help adopted children and their families promote and reinforce healthy connections, youth empowerment, identity affirmation and resilience, cultural competency and community engagement.

Even if you’ve never seen a performance of The Nutcracker, you’ve probably heard of it—and you definitely know its music. Originally choreographed in 1892 by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score by Tchaikovsky, it was adapted from E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1816 short story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” The Nutcracker is arguably the most popular ballet performance. In fact, major American ballet companies generate around 40% of their annual ticket revenues from performances of The Nutcracker. But you don’t have to travel to a major American ballet company (or pay the major ticket prices) to enjoy a performance. Since 2011, the Littleton Ballet Academy and the Littleton Youth Ballet Company have been presenting performances of the classic two-act ballet to great acclaim. Littleton Ballet Academy was founded in 2003 by Bobbie Jaramillo and her daughter Ali. Both professional dancers with impressive résumés, the mother-daughter duo wanted to share their love of ballet. “And then in 2007, we started doing performances,” says Ali. “I grew up with doing a lot of performances, and I think it’s really important. After all those lessons and classes, performing is like dessert.” Shortly after the academy started doing performances, Bobbie and Ali created a nonprofit youth ballet company for serious, upper-level students ages 7–18. “You have to be in level three or higher,” explains Ali, “and you have to come to an

audition. We’ve never rejected anyone, it’s just a formality. But it does show their interest. And then they’re accepted as part of this company.” With around 325 students enrolled in the academy and 86 dancers as part of the ballet company, both entities have a teamlike feel, something that Ali says tends to be missing in ballet. “They have uniforms and they have mentors; the mentors will teach the younger kids things like how to sew their pointe shoes.” Ali says they also try to make it as family-based as possible, “because we’re very aware that during Nutcracker season, we tend to see them more than their parents do.” Set in 1902 Littleton, Ali says the performance has stayed true to the traditional story. “What I love about our Nutcracker is that it’s got a great family feel to it. There’s no slapstick. There are no surprises. We don’t have a creepy Drosselmeyer. We try to make it as family-friendly as we can.” Production starts with selecting the right dancer for each role. “Choosing who will play Clara is the hardest thing because almost everyone wants to be Clara,” says Ali. “This year, we have six Claras. We were thinking we were going to have five; we knew it was between about eight kids. One of them surprised us at the audition by being just so charming and amazing. We were like, well, we have six shows. I guess we’re going to have six Claras.” The entire faculty is involved in the selection process. “We talk with all the teachers, CONTINUED > D ECEMB ER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . asking questions like ‘What do you think about this kid?’ ‘Is this the right year for them to be in this role?’ ‘Are they going to get really nervous?’ And if they’re not ready for this year, they may be chosen as an understudy and perform the role next year. We try to make sure that everyone in the advanced levels has something special to do that they’re going to be really excited about.” These 2022 performances are special for all the teachers and students, as it’s the first year since 2019 that things feel back to normal. Obviously, there were no performances in 2020, and in 2021 everyone performed in masks. “I just think the biggest thing is that all our kids love The Nutcracker. You know, sometimes when you’re watching people, you can tell they don’t love what they’re doing. But I feel like all our kids love it. Our parents seem to love it. They don’t love Saturday rehearsals, but I think once they get in, they’re like, ‘This is so fun to see my child so happy.’” To purchase tickets, visit littletonballetacademy.org.

Highlands Ranch Native Ingrid Andress Talks About Her Songwriter-Turned-Artist Journey, Touring With Superstar Keith Urban, And Her Road to Success

Ingrid Andress is on top of the world, even when she’s not quite sure where she is. The 3-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter originally from Highlands Ranch spent the past several months on the road, opening for country superstar Keith Urban on his “The Speed of Now’’ North American tour. On Halloween, she couldn’t contain her pinch-me shock on Insta at being invited to open for rock ’n’ roll icon Stevie Nicks in Huntsville, Ala. And in November, Ingrid earned a fourth Grammy nomination, this time for “Wishful Drinking,” a song that Ingrid co-wrote and appears on her sophomore album “Good Person.” The song, performed by Ingrid and Sam Hunt (yep, that’s right) hit No. 1 on the country charts the same month. Life has been good. “Manifesting,” is how the 2009 Rock Canyon High School graduate describes her current zero-to-60 road to success. She’s turning dreams into reality. “It’s been a whirlwind and also has felt like a lifetime,” Ingrid says. Her first album, “Lady Like” was released in March 2020, just as the pandemic shut down the world, which made touring to support her album impossible. And what an incredible debut. “Lady Like” garnered three Grammy nominations and turned heads on the country music scene. She’d already made a name for herself as a songwriter, co-writing for tracks recorded by Hunt, Alicia Keys, Charli XCX, Bebe Rexha, among others. Ingrid Andress grew up in Highlands Ranch, and her mom has said she was always performing, pretending to be Snow White or talking to ladybugs — and always singing. Ingrid’s dad, Brad Andress, was the strength and conditioning coach for the Colorado Rockies and they traveled frequently for his work. That building, she discovered, was part of the renowned Berklee College of Music, and that was a turning point in her life. She came home, quit sports (volleyball, soccer and track, if you’re

keeping score) and threw herself into performing, joining every choir and musical theater production she could manage. “I’m a very headstrong person. Once I decided that that’s where I wanted to go, nothing would get in my way,” Ingrid says. Always a sucker for the storytelling aspect of music — there’s just something about the way life experiences make all of us feel — Ingrid focused on songwriting at Berklee and afterward, moved to Nashville, waited a lot of tables, and focused on honing her craft. That’s where she landed her publishing deal. “You’re not born a good songwriter,” Ingrid says. “You have to practice writing, network with other songwriters, practice your songs on the public. It can be a long process.” It took Ingrid a few years to realize she couldn’t bear to have someone else lend voice to her songs, which oftentimes came out of deeply personal heartache, and she

was ready to front her own work. “Lady Like” was her salvo. “I just thought I was a songwriter. I thought I had too many opinions to be an artist. I wasn’t hearing people singing about things I was singing and writing about,” Ingrid says. Her Colorado roots are all over her lyrics, from “Blue’s” “Thought I knew just what to call the color of the Colorado sky, but looking in your eyes, It’s like seeing blue for the first time.” Or in the multi-platinum No. 1 single “More Hearts than Mine”: “I can’t wait to show you where I grew up, Walk you ‘round the foothills of my town.” Ingrid has been in full tour mode, hanging out with her band — “We’re good friends” — and loving being able to see the whole country. Success for her is seeing more and more people sing her songs during shows.

“It feels like you are all agreeing that you feel whatever is in the song. You’re all sort of coming together and saying ‘I’ve felt this’ and as a songwriter that’s your goal, to show your feelings and put those out into the world.” Right now, Ingrid is basking in the success of two critically acclaimed albums and the world that has opened for her. Expect to hear more about her in 2023, including her own headlining tour with a European leg. “Definitely being on stage playing music is one of the happiest places for me. CHRISTMAS CIRQUE BROADWAY DIRECTOR BRINGS THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS TO THE FRONT RANGE IN CIRQUE STYLE

Did you know that Denver is the only home to renowned Broadway director Neil Goldberg’s all-new, full-length Christmas production? “Cirque: The Spirit of Christmas” introduces the audience to Noel, a young girl overwhelmed by the frenzy of the season. Her imagination transports her to a magical place from the safety of her own bed. Together with the audience, Noel encounters the breathtaking wonder, athleticism, and artistry of cirque performers, using the bed as a central prop and support. Highlights include a world-class contortion group, Mongolian speed jugglers, trapeze artists, aerialists, and acrobatics. This character and narrative-driven show also includes performers who are not circus artists; a majestic ballerina standing 6 foot 2 inches on pointe, a multigenerational, German vaudevillian, the child herself, singers, dancers and theatrical storytelling, accompanied by an original Broadway-style score. Neil says, “Other outfits use cirque artists to tell a story, this is a Christmas story that uses cirque artistry.” In addition to the international cast of 28 performers, Neil employs an associate director, an act choreographer who specializes in cirque acts, and a professional broadway choreographer with expertise in staging. Neil personally oversaw the design of 75 spectacular costumes in meticulous detail. How did Denver get so lucky to be the repeated home of Neil Goldberg’s Christmas productions? “I have an affection for the Rockies Gaylord resort. I have wonderful memories of the property,” Neil says. He hopes each audience member leaves with the same affection and wonderful memories for themselves. Cirque: Spirit of Christmas runs at the Gaylord Rockies Resort from Nov. 18 through Jan. 1.

Make holiday entertaining easy with these styling food hacks that look impressive but are simple to create. If you don’t have time to bake a dessert but want to serve something that doesn’t look store bought, simply top it with berries, herbs, a sauce or a holiday prop to give it a little something extra. We made a trip to Trader Joes and purchased most of these items, and after some simple assembling and minimal baking, we were able to create a beautiful, eye-catching holiday spread.

Holiday Charcuterie Board Why not create a unique holiday charcuterie board in the shape of a Christmas tree or snowman. It looks impressive and was a quick assembly. For this look, a few trimmed evergreen clippings from the backyard served as a great edging for the board. With a variety of cheeses, berries, nuts and olives, this tasty display makes the perfect statement board. For an added touch, use a cookie cutter to add a cheese star to the top.

Double Creme Brie Board This double creme brie with truffles can be purchased at Trader Joes and is always a crowd favorite. After baking the brie, add berries and a sauce of your choosing to the top as a flavor enhancer and to add interest. This brie is drizzled with local honey, berries and candied pecans and is served with crackers.

Gourmet Hot Chocolate If serving a warm beverage for guests to enjoy, consider hot chocolate with burnt sugar rimmed mugs. If creating a hot chocolate bar, provide whipped cream and marshmallow toppings as well as added flavorings such as caramel, peppermint, or make it a boozy hot chocolate with whiskey, Bailey’s or Peppermint Schnapps.

Dessert Tips Pick up an inexpensive cheesecake at the grocery and garnish with candied pecans, fresh berries and mint sprigs for added color, dimension and interest. Try the same with a grocery-purchased apple tart. Add sliced pears, fresh herbs, berries and drizzled caramel for color and a homemade touch to this delicious treat. A decadent double chocolate cake, topped with fresh raspberries to adorn the top and cascading down the side (toothpicks can be used to hold them in place) makes not only an amazing dessert, but the perfect entertaining table centerpiece too. If you can find a chocolate cake with raspberry filling, even better!

Salt Dough Recipe

Step One

MAKES ABOUT 12 ORNAMENTS

Mix together flour and salt. Add ¼ cup water and paint (if you want a white dough, otherwise you may leave it out). Stir to mix. If needed, slowly add more water until you reach a pizza dough consistency. Finally, remove dough from the bowl and knead on a floured surface until all ingredients are fully incorporated. Add more flour if too sticky, add more water if too dry.

Salt dough, or dough art as we refer to it in our family, is a simple yet beautiful way to adorn spaces around the holidays. Making salt dough ornaments is a holiday tradition that we have been doing since I was a kid in the ‘80s, and now I enjoy with my kids. Salt dough has made a comeback in recent years for good reason—it only requires three ingredients, and the festive end product will last for years to come. We still pull out the salt dough ornaments I made as a kid and place them on our tree each year. I love new ways to reinvent old traditions. That is exactly what I did here with these lovely Snowflake Salt Dough Ornaments.

Supplies Needed • Rolling Pin • Cookie Cutters (optional) • Plastic or Metal Straw • Cookie Sheet

Parchment Paper Lettered Stamps Acrylic Sealer Bakers Twine

To make ornaments, use a rolling pin to roll dough to ½—¼ inch thick.

Step Three Use a cookie cutter to create snowflake shapes. Use a straw to poke a hole at the top of each snowflake to allow a space to thread the twine after baking.

Step Four Place ornaments on parchment-lined baking sheets. Bake at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 hours until dry. Flip ornaments every 30 minutes for a faster bake.

Ingredients • 1 cup All Purpose White Flour • ½ cup Water (give or take)

Step Two

• ½ cup Table Salt • 4 oz White Acrylic Paint

Step Five Once cooled, add decorative touches with lettered stamps, acrylic paint or Sharpie markers. Finally, spray one side of the ornament with an acrylic seal. Let dry, flip and spray the other side.

Step Six Once dried completely, thread twine through the hole. Hang from tree or add to gift boxes as gift tags.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.)
