REMEMBERING HIGHLANDS RANCH’S TWO WWII POW VETERANS AND THEIR INCREDIBLE DISCOVERY 75 YEARS AFTER THE WAR

A LIFE OF SERVICE A HEROIC STORY: 25 STEPS

“No finer man have I met.” Those were the first words spoken by local radio host and journalist Steffan Tubbs at the eulogy for 2nd Lt. Robert “Bob” McAdam of Highlands Ranch, who passed away on Sept. 11, 2022, just months shy of his 102nd birthday. Bob was a quiet hero, a man who defined humility and represented what we all should aspire to be. At a very young age, he gave himself to love of his country, and to protect the rights and freedom of people he had never met. He continued to share his love with all those who came to know him later on with that same passionate and caring spirit. As business partners in Mountain Time Media, Steffan and I were honored and blessed to have developed a meaningful friendship with Bob during and after the production of our documentary on his unabashed heroism in “25 Steps,” which premiered on June 6, 2018. This film is the amazing story of two WWII POWS shot down in Europe, imprisoned at the same Nazi POW camp, and by happenstance, meet each other for the first time at Wind Crest Senior Living Community in Highlands Ranch some 72 years later.

Incredibly, Bob’s life paralleled another Highlands Ranch WWII POW veteran, the basis of “25 Steps.” The story of Bob, a flight engineer in a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber shot down on his first mission, and Col. Sherwin “Butch” Desens, a 22-year-old P-47 squadron leader shot down on his 70th mission, is “quite a story,” as the film’s narrator Peter Coyote states. “25 Steps” recounts the amazing parallels in the lives of two men from the time they spent in the Stalag Luft I camp in Barth, Germany, to the memories they shared while getting to know one another so many years later. Butch passed away in October 2019 in Highlands Ranch. “The man, like so many men and women of the Greatest Generation, didn’t complain,” Steffan continued in his eulogy in September. “They overcame adversity. They did. They accomplished. They made America great.” As much as Bob was accomplished in tennis, racquetball and as a long-distance runner, Butch also utilized his skills, training and competitive nature in various sports. In his 60’s he won his club’s golf championship multiple times

and shot his age nine times as well. He continued his love for downhill and cross-country skiing well into his 80’s. A quiet and unassuming man, it would never occur to him to boast about his leadership as a young man responsible for the lives of hundreds of other fighter pilots during those dangerous missions. It is fitting that in the month of November we not only pay tribute to our veterans but also gather our friends and family to give thanks for our blessings. Bob and Butch’s examples set a high bar for everyone to serve others without asking what you will receive in return. In addition to documentary films, Mountain Time Media also produces The American Veteran Show which airs at noon every Sunday on 710AM KNUS radio, hosted by Steffan Tubbs. Mental Health and Motherhood: YANA M2M Provides Support So Every Mom Can Know That She IS Enough ARTICLE BY ELIZABETH WATSON

“I am struggling.” “I don’t know if I can do this.” “I feel like I am drowning.” When a mother starts to have thoughts that don’t fit our society’s expectations of what a “good mom” needs to be, it often leaves them feeling defeated, overwhelmed, and isolated. Nikki Brooker founded You Are Not Alone, Mom to Mom — YANA M2M — in 2017 in response to two separate family tragedies in Highlands Ranch involving desperate and hopeless mothers. Nikki was so moved by the tragedies that she felt compelled to create a safe space for struggling mothers to connect. “When you feel connected,” she says, “it changes everything.” In a video on YANA M2M’s website, Joanne shares her story about the difficulties of dealing with postpartum depression, feelings of inadequacy, and being so low she was even contemplating the unthinkable. She saw YANA M2M on the news and decided to attend a meeting. The organization gave her a “safe space to run to” and her interaction with the other mothers made all the difference because she finally felt accepted and understood. Through meetings, mentorship, education and most importantly providing a safe community where mothers can find the support they need, YANA M2M has made a difference in hundreds of lives, and their support systems continue to evolve. In addition to their established meetings and events, YANA M2M has initiated the Strong Mamas, Thriving Babies program. This program connects new moms within weeks of delivery and schedules three, six, nine and

12-month postpartum phone call check-ins. Strong Mamas, Thriving Babies provides a support team from the very beginning of the motherhood journey by providing gatherings for mothers with similar-aged babies and regularly scheduled wellness checks. “We believe motherhood should be a team sport,” Nikki says. “Every mom deserves to be on a team and our program will create those teams for every mom.” YANA M2M is a Colorado 501(c)(3) nonprofit and is participating in Colorado Gives Day in hopes of gaining additional funding for the Strong Mamas, Thriving Babies program. “Our program is going to change the world, one mom at a time, but that takes funding. With partnerships with two local hospitals, we need to fund the program. Colorado Gives Day is a great opportunity to donate to our campaign or go to our website and click on donate. Funding goes directly to the program needs to give every mom the peer-to-peer support system they deserve,” Nikki says. Motherhood is sometimes idealized as a beautiful experience, full of soft lighting, adorable babies, and mothers that exude a comforting sense of calm, accomplishment, and peacefulness. When that perception is confronted by the truth that sometimes motherhood can be hard, messy, heartbreaking, and lonely — that’s when Nikki wants moms to know that YANA M2M is a resource for everyone. This organization is for all mothers to have that important community support so that they can truly know that they are not alone. JOY BUILDING Finding Independence and Joy in a Remodeled Bathroom ARTICLE BY ALYSSA MALLETTE PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Luke Bowman was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) just before his third birthday. DMD is a genetic disorder presenting progressive muscle degeneration and weakness. But Luke doesn’t let that stop him. With his compassionate and loving parents, Debbie and Chad Bowman, by his side and the companionship of his dog, Cody, he is living his best life here in the south metro area. Luke’s day-to-day looks a little different than other kids his age. Living with DMD means he uses a wheelchair and requires assistance doing daily activities like bathing and getting dressed. As Luke got older, his need for independence grew. The Bowmans reached out to the Home Builders Foundation (HBF), seeking a space where Luke could retreat to complete tasks helping him build his independence. HBF was thrilled to accept Luke’s family into their own and, together with the FBC Remodel team, complete a bathroom remodel for Luke that would meet his needs and grow with him. “HBF and FBC Remodel spent a lot of time with Luke finding out what he likes and needs,” Debbie said. The FBC Team had to ensure that the space was ADA compliant and functional for Luke’s needs while also being a cool and comfortable space for him to enjoy. To be functional for Luke, the bathroom required ample space around the tub, shower, and sink to allow for the turn radius of his wheelchair to move freely. Experienced with ADA compliance, designer Kacie was familiar with the logistics and necessities of the project and put together a design plan that worked perfectly for Luke. Then came designing the elements that truly brought the room to life. Kacie spearheaded the design of Luke’s bathroom, took the time to get to know the Bowman family, and worked diligently to create a space that brought them joy. She discovered their love for Star Wars and incorporated design elements that brought the movie series to life in his bathroom. “For us, there’s joy in independence and ease of use, just allowing him to be in there and relax and have a sanctuary,” Debbie says. Luke says it simply, “as they build, there is more joy.”

At FBC Remodel, we aim to build joy for as many people as possible. Joy looks different to each person, and as part of this project, we wanted to ensure that we spread joy throughout our team, the HBF team, and, most importantly, the Bowmans. This project gave us an incredible opportunity to spread joy to a family in need and bring joy to our FBC Remodel family. This year we are celebrating 25 years of building joy. Over the next 10 years, our goal is to build joy for one million people, including those on our team, our clients, and people throughout the communities where we live and work.
