Give THANKS The value of a community goes far beyond home prices. Much of it lies in the way we come together when we need each other most, working to create happiness, stability, and growth for all those who live here. This Thanksgiving season, join us in showing gratitude to the local nonprofits who are working to support our communities. Here are a couple of our favorite ways to give thanks and give back: —

Buy a cookie. Support Project Angel Heart through their annual fall fundraiser. This year, they’re selling autumn-themed frosted sugar cookies, with each set providing three nutritious meals to people in our community facing life threatening illnesses. Learn more at projectangelheart.org.

—

Donate supplies. Did you know that Urban Peak is the only nonprofit in the Denver Metro Area that exclusively serves youth ages 15-24 who are experiencing homelessness? They have a handy online shopping list where you can donate supplies directly to support their work. Learn more at bit.ly/urbanpeakdonate.

—

Embrace puppy love. Everybody loves an underdog, especially our friends at Underdogs Animal Rescue. They work year-round to find homes for animals who are often forgotten, misunderstood, or picked last from shelters. Become a part of their mission through donations or volunteerism. Learn more at underdogsrescue.org.

Thank you for being a part of our community. Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving season, from your local real estate experts.

“OPEN YOUR MOUTH FOR THE MUTE, FOR THE RIGHTS OF ALL WHO ARE DESTITUTE. OPEN YOUR MOUTH, JUDGE RIGHTEOUSLY, DEFEND THE RIGHTS OF THE POOR AND THE NEEDY.” PROVERBS 31:8-9

For 20 years, Vanessa has also been very active in prison ministry. She now heads her church’s outreach ministry, serving eight prisons in the state of Colorado. Informed by her young years in diverse communities and the differences people of color encounter in the justice system, she fiercely advocates for prison and justice system reform. Gideon brings a distinctive perspective to racial injustice. As an African, not an African American, he initially felt spared from the historical prejudice Black Americans encounter. But as he spent more time working and building connections professionally, he began to experience the notion of ‘otherness’. He’d hear things like “You’re such a hard worker. Not like them.” At first this sounded complimentary, but soon he began to see a pattern of erroneous stereotypes in these comments. But it was raising their Black and bi-racial children that brought this advocacy full circle. “As a white mother of Black children, I never, ever had those things happen to me….it changes how you perceive racism, the impact on my children, the ways they are seen as different. Or how my foster teens are treated” both expressly and in their life circumstances. “It’s strange some people are confused by us, because we are adamant Christians, but we are adamant social justice advocates.” Vanessa says, “we are all God’s children. There should be no distinction of that in our prisons, in our CEO boardrooms, our neighborhoods or our representation.” In following their faith, The Osei family live by these words. “Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and the needy.” Proverbs 31:8-9

GIVING BACK

WALKING THE WALK

A JOURNEY DOWN THE WINDING LIFE PATH OF UNASSUMING SPIRITUAL LEADER FRANCIS CHAN

IMAGINE YOURSELF AS THE LEADER OF A THRIVING MEGACHURCH IN VENTURA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, WITH MORE THAN 5,000 MEMBERS AND GROWING. You’re a New York Times bestseller making a million dollars in royalties from your first book and people love you—you’re on top of the world. Would you leave that all behind? Better yet, would you trade all of that, giving away 90% of your income to end up living in the poorest region of Hong Kong surrounded by people struggling to make it by on just 50 cents a day? For most, it probably sounds like a tale of riches to rags; an unfortunate and unwanted result of someone falling upon hard times. But for Francis Chan, a church planter and best-selling author who speaks to thousands of people around the world each year, it’s exactly what he did. And exactly what he needed—an opportunity to walk down a winding path that led him toward fulfilling his purpose; toward becoming a

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)

Watch the full interview @ CityLifestyle.com! Francis, born in San Francisco, was raised in a very traditional Chinese home and navigated a challenging upbringing. His mother died while giving birth to him. His father remarried, then his stepmother died in a car accident when he was 8. His father remarried again, then, when Francis was 12, died of cancer. Twenty-six and newly married, Francis and his wife Lisa founded Cornerstone Community Church in Simi Valley, California in the early 90s, beginning with a membership of 30 people. Within the first two months, the church grew to 100. By 2000, membership grew even more to 1,600. And by 2008, Cornerstone Community Church was one of the largest in Ventura County and Francis’ then-new book “Crazy Love” was a New York Times bestseller. Then, in 2010, Francis decided to leave it behind in pursuit of a more humble and impactful way of life. The $1 million his bestselling book made in the first year, plus the money it continues to make? Francis signed it all over to a charitable gift fund helping the poor and victims of human trafficking. After making the decision to leave Cornerstone and wrestling with what the next step would be, Francis and Lisa ended up selling their Simi Valley house and moving their family of six at the time overseas to India, Thailand and China, where he was able to embrace new interests and activities by doing what the locals do, and where he also saw an inspiring shift in culture and spiritual values. “I wish we could learn and see the sacrifice of others,” he says. “Their mentality really isn’t a consumer mindset of ‘Here’s my needs, here’s what I feel, no one cares about me— me, me, me, me. Overseas they’re just obsessed with each other and thinking about how to get to the poor—the truly poor—like ‘We’re going to starve today,’ or ‘We’re selling off kids today.’ That type of poor. There’s just a lot more urgency.” In the throes of a pandemic, quarrels over U.S. politics, a growing divide among people and beliefs, and the unsurety of life, Francis’ message of focus and fulfillment can be summed up simply: take your eyes off yourself.

“People that I’ve found that have spent their lives truly loving others are the j o y f u l p e o p l e .” 28

Wendy Ingraham + FOUNDER OF ROBIN’S NEST + COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER + 12-TIME IRONMAN CHAMPION

ARTICLE JENNIFER STARBUCK

WENDY INGRAHAM IS THE FOUNDER OF ROBIN’S NEST FOUNDATION AT SKY VIEW FARM IN DOUGLAS COUNTY. Robin’s Nest is a non-profit that uses horse programming to help teens and military veterans experiencing depression, anxiety and trauma-related issues. CAREER PATH? I was a pro triathlete for 20 years. I’m a 12-time Ironman champion, which definitely has spurred me on to have determination. I work really hard and believe anything is possible if you keep a positive attitude. After my triathlete career, I transitioned into sports marketing. I live in Castle Pines Village and am active in the community. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? Robin’s Nest came about when three of my friends committed suicide within three months. That’s when I realized how bad mental health is in America. People of all ages needed help, they needed a place to go to relax, breathe and feel free and build confidence and feel valued. Robin’s Nest has been up and running for three years thanks to my husband’s support and belief in my vision in helping people with depression, anxiety, autism, dyslexia, PTSD and veterans. WHAT’S YOUR GOAL? At this point we’re starting to get programs going to provide assistance and help for teens and veterans, to get them on the road to a positive and healthy life. One of the things that needs to be done is building out our offices for therapists and to bring tutors in for the kids. One of the best ways to help us is to spread the word and throughout our community that there are people out there willing to help and that they are here for them providing a safe place
