Everybody Cut Loose! ONE OF MY FAVORITE PARTS OF BEING AN EDITOR IS ATTENDING THE PHOTO SHOOTS. This month's issue provided some adventure as we worked with dogs! And although trying to persuade dogs to look on cue is challenging, our models, true to form, were as persevering and compliant as the loyal companions they're famous for being. Given the company, the shoots were a bit more laid back—we cut loose a bit for some fun in the summer sun (or shade!) at Breckinridge Brewery. That’s probably the mood a lot of us are in with summer drawing to a close. Maybe we’re a bit tired, but since we’re almost running on borrowed time anyway, why not let our hair down and go for it—whether it's an adventure or an opportunity to chillax. Take a page from this month’s issue and try the Wildcat Figure Eight (p. 26). If you need a little nudge to help you relax, indulge in a great summer rose wine (p. 10) or take your dog to a local brewery—where else can you eat and drink with your best furry friend? (p. 18).

THE START OF A SCHOOL YEAR CAN BE A CHALLENGING TIME FOR KIDS AND PARENTS WITH TRANSITIONS FROM ONE GRADE TO ANOTHER, NEW TEACHERS, BULLYING, SOCIAL PRESSURE AND MUCH MORE. With a little preparation and the right attitude, shifting from a laid-back summer to the routine of school doesn’t have to be difficult. EASE THE STRESS AND ESTABLISH ROUTINES + Talk about it. Ask your child what he or she is worried about if they show concern, and talk about the fun and exciting things that will be happening throughout the school year. + Stay positive! If you show enthusiasm for what the new school year brings, your kids are sure to pick up on it, and the nervous energy will turn into excitement. + Establish fun traditions. Do something fun the night before school starts, or have a special breakfast before the first day. Make it a day they look forward to every year. + Get back on schedule. Before the school year begins, start establishing the “school year” bedtimes, and wake children up at the time they will be getting up for school. Also, eat meals on a more regular schedule before school starts. + Don’t over-schedule your child or family. Also, include your child in decisions regarding what or how many activities they are involved in. Ask him or her how much they can handle in addition to school work. + Set expectations. Go through expectations ahead of time about getting dressed, eating breakfast, and appropriate grooming so that everyone gets out the door on time.

+ Make it special. For younger children, include a family photo or a special note in their backpack or lunchbox to help them get the day. + Stay involved with your child’s school and have regular communication with the teacher -- even if it’s over email. Stay on top of how your child is doing academically, socially and behaviorally. + Get organized! Establish a family calendar where all after-school events and important assignment due dates are easy to spot. Prepare school bags and clothes the night before, arrange books and school supplies on shelves or in boxes or drawers, organize all paperwork by priority, and make a single to-do list of all the tasks you need to complete each day. + Plan the homework load. Make a plan for where and when homework will be done. Is it always done at the kitchen table right after school, or is there a desk your child uses and homework time will be after dinner? Stick to a schedule so it’s always part of the evening routine. + Have a "practice run." Take a leisurely trip to school before the first day. Make it fun with a bike ride or family walk if possible to familiarize kids with the route to school. + Some kids might worry about making new friends and “fitting in." Finding a safe, welcoming group is a great foundation for dealing with the ups and downs of school. Encourage being a friend and making new friends. + Help your child understand that every part of building friendships is a skill, so the more they practice, the better they will get. Some of the skills may be: introducing yourself, showing interest in others’ comments, finding common ground from which to build upon, inviting people to do things, etc. + One person's "joke" can easily be another person's hurt feelings. Coach children on considering how their words and actions could be interpreted by others. Set expectations early on for appropriate behavior, and listen to how they interact with their friends. + Teach your child empathy and how to be a good friend. + Research shows that hostility between siblings is not innocent and can leave a lasting, detrimental impact. Do not tolerate bullying or aggression between siblings. + Cyberbullying is the use of technology to harass, threaten, embarrass, or target another person. + Know your child’s online world – check their postings and visit sites they frequent. meet Modelo + Stephanie THINK ABOUT IT. Would you bring an adorable, oh-so-cute eight-week-old puppy into your home, knowing that you are responsible for raising it to become a guide dog, and also knowing that about a year later you’ll have to say goodbye so the pup can join a forever home? This is exactly what Highlands Ranch residents Stephanie Stanley and her daughter, Hannah, did. Hannah, 18, had approached her mom with the idea to work with service dogs for her senior project. They reached out to Guide Dogs for the Blind, planning to be “puppy sitters,” volunteers who temporarily care for a puppy when a need arises. However, due to a shortage of homes, they instead became “puppy raisers,” volunteers who are responsible for teaching puppies good manners and basic obedience until the puppy is old enough to complete formal training to be a guide dog. Modelo, a black lab, joined their family in September 2017. First up was potty training (Hannah bore the brunt of this tiring process) and teaching Modelo good kennel behavior. In addition to basic obedience, Stephanie and Hannah are also responsible for exposing him to a variety of situations and environments, including walking on busy streets and riding public transportation. They meet with a representative from Guide Dogs for the Blind periodically so his progress can be documented. “It’s such a sense of accomplishment when Modelo learns how to do something,” Stephanie says. Though Modelo will leave their family in a few months to complete his formal training, Stephanie knows they will have a forever bond. Most puppy raisers stay in touch with the new owner once they are placed. “We love him, but we know he’s leaving for a better purpose. We’ve raised him so that he can leave and move forward in his life,” Stephanie says. “It’s not different from what you want for your kids.”

It just might be the best career change ever. Bruno, a 16-month-old terrier mix, was a runaway who wound up in a New Mexico shelter. Freedom Service Dogs of America, a Colorado-based organization that transforms shelter dogs into service dogs, chose him for its program. However, Bruno’s distractibility (chasing rabbits is too fun!) precluded him from training and he was selected for yet another career—full-time pet. Adopted by Castle Rock residents Linda and Frank Candella in April, he’s been bringing joy to their lives ever since. “He has a face you just want to squeeze,” Linda says. “He gets to your heart right away.” The Candellas have owned dogs and cats before, but Bruno is their first pet in about 15 years, and their first puppy. They say Bruno has brought an undeniable energy to their home. He sleeps with them and wakes them up each morning (no more alarm clocks, says Frank), and his rambunctiousness keeps them moving. Frank and Bruno walk a mile and a half each morning, and again each evening. “I had to lose a few pounds to keep up with him,” Frank says with a laugh. Bruno loves to meet other dogs, though he takes a particular liking to bigger dogs and especially loves running with them. “It’s beautiful to watch him run,” Frank says. Bruno’s also a snuggler, which Linda says is her favorite part so far. Though Linda and Frank don’t know Bruno’s full history, they believe that building trust is an important step in their relationship, and they’ve made a lot of headway in a short time. Slowly Bruno is learning that he now has a permanent home, and a car ride doesn’t mean getting left behind. In the future they hope to take road trips and experience even more new adventures together. “He’s enhanced our lives and made things more fun,” Frank says. 24

meet Zoos + Corporal Todd Corporal Todd Tucker jumped at the chance to join the Douglas County Sheriff’s K-9 unit in 2012, in part because he liked the idea of having a dog for his partner. And what a partnership it’s been. Zoos, an eight-year-old German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix, has faithfully been by Tucker’s side ever since, aiding in searches for suspects, delighting children at meet-and-greets, and providing companionship during the long overnight shifts. “He’s the best partner I’ve ever had,” Tucker says. He and Zoos are one of six K-9 units for Douglas County, and all are trained for the same work, mainly to find illegal narcotics, missing persons and apprehend suspects. Tucker also leads the K-9 unit training. All units train together once a week for about nine hours, where they recreate calls and try to perfect problems that have come up. Zoos lives in a kennel in Tucker’s Highlands Ranch garage. When Zoos first came home, Tucker’s young children made him a “welcome” note, writing “Zoos” instead of “Zeus,” his given name. The spelling stuck. However, Zoos is not a family pet. “When things start to get bad they call for K-9. Zoos’ job is to die for a police officer. If he dies for an officer then he did his job,” Tucker says. But Zoos has a goofy side, Tucker says, and when he’s not working he likes to be the life of the party. And he loves playing with balls and in the water. Zoos is likely to retire in the next few months, which means he’ll have more time for playing. And he’ll still be by Tucker’s side. “He’ll be the pet I’ve always wanted,” he says. “He’s my best friend.” August 2018 | Highlands Ranch Lifestyle

You’ll cross a stream and turn either direction to follow Ponderosa for 2.5 miles, eventually circling back to Waterin’ Hole. From here, peel right and follow the trail another mile to the Wildcat Mountain Trail. A 1.5 mile out-and-back with a slight climb will take you to a beautiful vista, then back down to Waterin’ Hole, where you’ll turn right and sprint to the finish.

If she is, its completely undetectable. In person she is as inviting as the spaces she designs. “I truly believe it all starts home,” Orlando says of achieving that sense of peace where we hang our hat. Which is why, when one couple heard about Orlando’s incredible knack for creating a deeply personalized ambiance for each client, they hired her to do the same for their Highlands Ranch home. Since the house, which serves as summer home for the Arizonabased clients, was already in terrific condition, the real focus was to carve out a personalized space which would reflect a more casual tone. “Lighter and brighter!” chimes Orlando of her client’s overall goal. Typically, Orlando enjoys taking time to work closely beside her clients throughout their design project, ensuring everything is done to spec. However, the clients preferred to be away during the most of the remodeling and gave Orlando free reign to let her creative juices flow. Armed with a clear picture of her client’s end-game, she wasted no time tearing out what didn’t work into their vision of a breezier feeling. “The first thing that needed to be done was to create visual fluidity from the moment you walk into the home,” Orlando says. Since the main level had three types of flooring, she determined that her approach would literally be working from the bottom up. Orlando ripped out all three types of flooring from the entry to the great room and into the porcelain-tiled kitchen. To draw the entire home together she went with uniform flooring. In choosing St. Laurent European Oak, she hit a home run. “The wood just has this beautiful natural character,” she says, delighted with the results. And because the subdued lighter finish she selected allows the eye to see the various character marks, “it really makes it an interesting choice…the clients were extremely happy with the choice to use a single flooring throughout the entire main level—it draws your eye from the moment you enter the great hall all the way through to the expanse of the kitchen.” she says, describing the newly created paradigm which offers a casual serenity. 28

The next task at hand was wall color. As it was a critical component, Orlando knew the client must be along for the decision. “Because they really loved the color on the walls of their Sedalia home, he brought me the can of paint to show me exactly the feel they loved,” Orlando explains. However, since she didn’t want their Highlands Ranch residence to reflect a lodge-y feeling, she found something very close but a bit airier. “It’s called Softer Tan by Sherwin Williams.” Because the clients absolutely fell in love with it, she used it generously throughout the home. “They were blown away by it…it became the foundation color in the master bath and bedroom,” she describes, “I’m a firm believer in connecting the spaces when you find something that really works, keep using it—it creates a really fluid feel.” Another look Orlando felt was essential was to orchestrate a casual yet elegant ambiance with the lighting. “People tend to underestimate the power that lighting has to change the entire feel of a room,” Orlando says persuasively. “You absolutely get your money back,” she says of spending extra money for lights that create an inviting mood. Orlando’s experience is time-tested: she and her husband bought a home in Castle Pines and recently sold it after only a few years of ownership—seeing a handsome profit. Orlando feels that by using ambiance lighting, they were offered a much higher selling price. To continue with creating a lighter space, Orlando knew the use of Edison bulbs were ideal. “They give off such an amazing soft glow,” she tells. She used them in light fixtures made of mercury glass for a uniquely casual yet sophisticated look. “The thing I love about these lights is that they are as beautiful when they are off as when they are turned on.” Keeping in mind that her clients wanted to host often, Orlando knew that the home must succeed in being a perch for casual entertaining. “The clients wanted a space that was completely inviting and casual…she wanted a place where people could come over and kick off their shoes, have a glass of ice tea and relax,” Orlando says. We caught up with the busy teen and asked him to share with us some of his favorite things. FAVORITE THING ABOUT LIVING IN HIGHLANDS RANCH AREA? I’d have to say that my favorite thing about living in Highlands Ranch is how close everything is and the community. I really like being able to scooter around and be able to hang out with all my friends even if we don’t live very close. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR FAMILY? I love how my family is very close and we all enjoy going out to eat and spending our weekends together. I’m the youngest—my older sister is 18—and I enjoy it because we went to the same school (STEM Academy). WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TO BEING A GREAT SPELLER? I practice before the competition every year but more importantly—I enjoy spelling! ANY PETS? I keep a lot of fish! I enjoy watching them and feeding them. MY GOAL IS TO BECOME... A doctor because I want to help people. HOBBIES: My favorite hobbies involve scootering around the neighborhood and occasionally Pokémon hunting. FAVORITE MOVIE AND BOOK?
