Chillin' in July... Hendersonville Style “Summer days driftin’ away, to uh, oh, those summer nights…” Summer Nights, Warren Casey and Jim Jacobs After one of the rainiest springs in history, summer finally rolled in last month, bringing lazy days and hot summer nights. While June gets to start the summer, the season really gets going during July, particularly in Hendersonville. From the annual Freedom Fest to outdoor concerts and long days on Old Hickory Lake, there is always something to do in July. July is the perfect month to get out and explore our community and sample some of the great events and activities that are all around us. At Hendersonville Lifestyle, we love everything about this season, and this month we are dedicating our July issue to helping you and your family find different ways to enjoy memorable summer experiences – all within the confines of Sumner County. Did I get your attention? I thought so… now let’s get started. First, we visit with the good folks at a local car wash who are committed to supporting their employees and the community, one clean vehicle at a time. Next, we get an insider’s view of one of Hendersonville’s most unique summertime sporting events as seen through the eyes of several former participants. Continuing, we take a stroll down nostalgia lane to visit with Hendersonville’s newest signature event that helps kick off the summer season. This sounds like a lot, but wait, there’s more… After a brief pause for refreshments, we continue our July sojourn by exploring the beautiful greenways and trails that adorn our City by the Lake. Finally, we arrive back home just in time to check out the summer music happenings at Hendersonville’s center for the arts. As always, we will also keep you up to date with many of the exciting events and business activities that are taking place in our home community. So, fire up your GPS or unfold your old school maps, and let’s start exploring Hendersonville in July.

Camel Express Cares LOCAL BUSINESS SUPPORTS THE COMMUNITY ONE CAR AT A TIME

Camel Express offers quality car washes with unparalleled customer service.

Nothing beats the feel of going for a drive in a clean, shiny vehicle. When your favorite ride looks good, you feel good, knowing that you will arrive at your destination in style. Unfortunately, many people have a hard time finding the time to keep their vehicles clean. Busy schedules override drivers’ desires to give their cars and trucks the TLC needed to keep them looking their best. Fortunately, there is a solution to this problem, and it is conveniently located on Rockland Road in Hendersonville – Camel Express Car Wash. Camel Express was founded in 2016 by CEO Read Hauck, who recognized the need for a fast, affordable and convenient car wash service in the Nashville area. “When I began exploring the possibility of opening my own business, I immediately thought of creating a high-quality car wash,” says Read. “I opened the first Camel Express location in Nashville in 2016.” Since then, Camel Express has continued to expand, and the operation now has five locations across Middle Tennessee. The company opened its Rockland Road location in Hendersonville in 2023. Since then, the business has become the go-to destination for premium car washing. “We are a people-focused organization. The care and concern for each member of our team is genuine and heartfelt, no matter the position or time spent with us,” says Brand Director Sarah Parker-Masse. “Our core values – safe,

caring and fun – drive every choice we make. Those three words represent who we are and describe the tone of our culture perfectly.” Many businesses “talk the talk” about supporting their employees and the community, but often fail to “walk the walk.” However, that is not the case with Camel Express. “Our initial company vision was ‘To create a culture that inspires people to make positive impacts on their lives & our communities’,” says Sarah. “However, our vision evolved this past year as the initial guidepost was woven into the fabric of who we are as a company. We live and breathe the words of our founder Read, who said, ‘Do good for people, Period.’” True to its mission, Camel Express instituted a program called the Camel Cares fund. While the fund began in 2016, the program was formalized in 2021. “Our Camel Cares program is an employee funded team benefit that supports employees in their moments of need,” says Sarah. “Camel Cares requests can be made for anything our team members require. Some recent examples of requests that were funded include eyeglasses, tires, a prom dress, auto repairs, roof replacement, Christmas gifts and groceries for an extended family member.” Any team member can submit a Camel Cares request by submitting a form for approval. All requests for support are reviewed by the Camel Express senior management team, and most requests within reason are approved. Although donating to the Camel Cares fund is voluntary, overall participation is nearly 100%. Participating employees can donate as little as $1 per paycheck, with many team members choosing to donate much more. Total donations have grown from $8,777 in 2021 to $43,942 in 2024. Along with its employee support program, Camel Express is also committed to giving back to the community by supporting selected local nonprofits and special causes. “When needs are apparent in the communities in which we serve, we tend to act,” said Sarah. “We do not set a donation

target each year, and we do not limit ourselves to any fixed amount. For example, in Hendersonville in 2023, we donated the proceeds of our annual October Haunted Car Wash program to Grace Place Ministry, and in 2024, we organized a food and supply drive to support the victims of the devastating floods in East Tennessee and beyond. Our 2025 partner will be selected later this year.” Soon, Camel Express will offer customers an option to support local schools through an onsite fundraising programs. Once formalized, the program details will be available from area schools. So, the next time your vehicle needs cleaning, head over to Camel Express and help them support our community. HEAT Kids Triathlon CELEBRATES 20 Years Hendersonville is home for many amateur athletes who regularly take advantage of the city’s abundant recreational facilities. The easy access to the Old Hickory Lake has made the city into a haven for some of the toughest athletes around – triathletes. Triathletes compete in a sport known as the triathlon, which is comprised of three components – swimming, biking and then running. In Hendersonville, most triathletes are members of an organization called the Hendersonville Endurance Athletic Team, or HEAT. HEAT provides regular training sessions for its members, as well as putting on events such as the Old Hickory Lake Triathlon. HEAT is also known for conducting one of the most popular events in Middle Tennessee, the annual Kids Triathlon. Since 1986, thousands of young competitors have begun their fitness journeys through the triathlon. As we approach the 20th running of the Kids Triathlon on Saturday, Aug. 9, Hendersonville Lifestyle spoke with three former competitors to see how the triathlon had impacted them. Twenty-nine year old Kalie Carter Brown competed in the Kids Triathlon from 2007 to 2009 after being inspired by her father Chuck Carter. After her triathlon experience, she went on to play

soccer in both high school and in college. While she no longer competes in triathlons, she cherishes the memories of those years. “Through the triathlon, I learned a lot about how to compete as an individual,” said Kalie. “The training sessions were fun, and they taught me new skills. I also learned that children are resilient, and competing in triathlons is a great way to challenge their endurance and mental toughness.” Josh Hudson, also twenty-nine years old, competed in the first three years of the event. He became interested in triathlons through the influence of his mother, Leslie, and a close family friend, Marilyn Meyer. They were both active members of HEAT, and they encouraged him to try the sport. Like Kalie, Josh's triathlon experience continues to influence him today. “The Kids Triathlon was very meaningful to me – it was special that we as kids had our own professionally managed event,” said Josh. “I will never forget the nervous excitement that I shared with my friends before each triathlon. I also learned how important it was to start fast, stay fast and end fast.” Twenty-six year old Erica Hudson, Josh’s sister, competed in the triathlon from the ages of five to sixteen. Like Josh, her gateway to the triathlon world came through her mother and Marilyn. Since her triathlon days, she has gone on to become an avid long-distance runner. “Triathlon training taught me to be disciplined from an early age,” said Erica. “Whether I am preparing for a half marathon or working on a job assignment, I know that my hard work will pay off. I am forever indebted to HEAT for the life-changing lessons I have learned.” Signups for the 20th Kids Triathlon are available at TriHeat.club.

The 20th HEAT Kids Triathlon will take place on Aug. 9 at the Sumner County Family YMCA. The swim leg will be in the YMCA pool, while the run and bike legs will take place on adjacent neighborhood streets.

Kicking Of f Summer Fun From May 22 through May 31, Veterans Park welcomed the return one of the community’s favorite family entertainment event – the Hendersonville Spring Carnival. Thousands of midway fans attended the carnival to revel in the sights, sounds, scents and tastes of a classic midway. The Hendersonville Spring Carnival was the brainchild of local businessman and promoter Barry Lee. Lee had long dreamed of bringing a midway event to the City by the Lake. “For many years, I wanted to bring another fun, family-friendly event to our city to give everyone another entertainment option,” said Lee. “We chose Veterans Park as the site to host the carnival due to its high visibility and its proximity to the Mary’s Magical Place playground.” Along with traditional midway games and concessions, the carnival had numerous rides for visitors to enjoy. Fan favorites included the “Sea Ray,” the “Y Factor” and a traditional Ferris Wheel.

During 2024, the city dedicated an addition to its trail system, the Sanders Ferry Greenway. The trail runs alongside Old Hickory Lake and spans 1.2 miles from Mallard Point to an endpoint beside the Lyncoya Café. Along with local exercise seekers, city personnel also appreciate the value that the pathways bring to Hendersonville. “The greenways and trails in Hendersonville are critical pieces of our city and parks infrastructure,” says Hendersonville Parks & Recreation Director Andy Gilley. “We have a huge local biking, running and walking community, and we place connectivity across our city at the forefront of planning for our future. We have some of the most picturesque scenes of any city around as folks traverse our trails, and we are proud of all of the amazing pieces of the heart of our city and Parks.” The next time that the outdoors is calling, lace up your shoes and take advantage of the scenic beauty that surrounds the pathways of Hendersonville.

The Perfect Steak ARTICLE BY CASEY WEBER, TALL GRASS MEAT COMPANY Nothing describes summer better than a good cookout! And what is a cookout without a good, quality steak and the perfect grilling recipe? 1. Thaw and acclimate the steak. For searing to occur, the proteins in steak need to be heated to at least 310°F. Tossing cold meat onto a hot grill lowers the temperature and can prevent a crust from forming, so it’s important that any frozen steaks are thawed completely before cooking. 2. Salt your steak 30-45 minutes before grilling. This causes the salt to draw moisture from within the steak up to the surface, where it dissolves the salt and creates a brine that gets reabsorbed into the steak where it breaks down tough connective tissues. 3. Oil the grate on the grill, not the steak. Use tongs and a paper towel dipped in vegetable oil to lube your grates. 4. Manage your heat well. Remember that your grill needs to be hot for your steak to get a good sear. But if it’s hot enough to cause your oil to smoke, it’s too hot.

28

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

5. Use the 60/40 rule. The best-tasting steaks are seared on both sides and cooked evenly in the middle. The simplest way to do that is to only flip your steak once. The 60/40 rule suggests that 60% of your cook time should be spent on one side, and 40% on the other. 6. Keep the lid closed. It may be tempting to peek, but trust the experts and keep it shut! Opening the lid makes your grill lose heat, which makes steaks cook unevenly. 7. Check for doneness. A meat thermometer will give you the most accurate temperature reading: • Rare: 120°F • Medium Rare: 130°F • Medium: 140°F • Medium Well: 150°F • Well: 160°F 8. Let your steak rest. Pull your steaks from the grill once they’re cooked to 5-10 degrees below your target temperature and rest for 10-15 minutes.

This magazine exists because Lynn said ‘Yes.’ Behind every City Lifestyle magazine is a leap of faith — someone who chose to shape the story of their city. They saw a chance to inspire, connect, and elevate the voices that make their community shine. Now, new cities are waiting for someone to say yes. What if it was you?

Sweet Summer Concerts Return Savor Outdoor Music, Food and Fun at Monthaven Arts & Cultural Center

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY RICK MURRAY The annual Sweet Summer Concert Series made its return to Hendersonville’s Monthaven Arts & Cultural Center on the last day of May 2025. The free concert featured entertainers GRW and Cimarron 615. The following weekend, the series continued with a special Sunday night appearance of the Allman Brothers tribute band End of the Line. There are two more opportunities to enjoy the great summer music starting with a July 26 performance by cosmic roots rockers the Tolleson Experiment. The series will conclude on Aug. 23 with an evening of the blues performed by Super Honk. So if you find yourself feeling the summertime blues, grab a chair or a blanket and head out to the Sweet Summer Concert Series.
