them had no idea about where to seek help and from whom to seek it. Fortunately, they were not alone. Thanks to the efforts of several community leaders, help was on its way within hours after the storm had passed.

"THEY WERE NOT ALONE." When the going gets tough, people tend to forget about their differences and focus on the common good. They reach out a helping hand to those who are suffering, and they offer hope and reassurance for the future. Never was the sentiment truer than during the weeks following the devastating tornado that struck Hendersonville during the early evening hours on Saturday, Dec. 9. The massive 400-yard-wide funnel cloud left a path of destruction across the city. Hundreds of homes and businesses were damaged during the storm, and area residents were left without power for up to five days. As the sun rose on Sunday, Dec. 10, reality set in, as residents and business owners were able to assess the scope of the damage. Homeowners and proprietors found themselves facing tough decisions about how to carry on, and how to begin to recover from the disaster. Many of

Due to their organizational roles, Erin concentrated on the needs of individuals and families, while Kathleen focused on helping local businesses. “During times of trouble, United Way’s role is to help families and communities begin to rebuild as soon as possible,” says Erin. “We raise funds, garner resources and mobilize volunteers.” The duo began brainstorming on Saturday evening, and by early Sunday morning, they had developed a plan to open a recovery center at the Chamber’s event space at the Streets of Indian Lake. Along with setting up and operating the recovery center, the duo CONTINUED >

developed a comprehensive communications plan. They and their staffs spent considerable time making calls, sending emails, making social media posts and sending out press releases to keep the community informed about what aid resources were available, what more was needed and how to drop off/pick up recovery materials. “The outpouring of support that we received from the community was phenomenal,” says Kathleen. “We received so many donated supplies that our recovery center was overflowing.” While setting up the recovery center was a prime focus, the two agencies coordinated with the city to secure aid from both the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Small Business Administration. Both agencies had personnel available to help businesses and individuals apply for relief programs. Although the Chamber and the United Way spearheaded many of the recovery efforts, they received a great deal of support from the City of Hendersonville. “Our city departments really came through for us during this emergency,” says Kathleen. “They all worked hard to help us identify and mitigate the needs of our residents and businesses.”

Erin agreed with Kathleen, adding her gratitude for the flow of information that they received from the city. “All through the crisis, city personnel worked hard to make sure that we were aware of people needing help,” said Erin. “They helped us gather and distribute goods and volunteer resources on a timely basis.” Thanks to the combined efforts of the Chamber, the United Way, the City of Hendersonville and scores of donors and volunteers, thousands of dollars in donated goods were distributed to businesses and individuals across the community, helping to Jump start the road to recovery. There is no doubt about it – neighborly love is alive and well in Hendersonville.

Long-time Hendersonville residents can remember the days when dining options were limited to eating at local fast food or “meat and three” establishments. Fortunately, those days are gone. All of these selections are available for one price, which varies by age and dining hours. Additional selections are available for an extra charge, including cheesecake, shrimp pancakes and special J Street wings. Along with its unlimited option, J Street offers house prepared items on its bar and lunch menus. The restaurant also has a special to go menu that includes single plate servings of popular items, as well as traditional Korean Bento boxes. All menus include vegan and vegetarian options. To enhance the self-grilling experience, dine-in guests have several entertainment options, including a theater-sized big screen television that is perfect for catching all of the action in big games and special events. Live music is also available on selected dates each month. “The MACC was founded in 2017 to create a vibrant arts and cultural scene for people of all ages throughout our community,” says Monthaven Executive Director Cheryl Stritchik. “Our mission is to educate, elevate and encourage our community through the transformative power of the arts.” In recent years, the MACC has put on multiple exhibitions which have drawn attention from art aficionados around the country. Exhibits such as original paintings by pop art icon Peter Max, prints by Dutch Golden Age master Rembrandt van Rijn, gowns worn by Princess Diana and sculptures by Pablo Picasso have helped elevate the MACC to elite art museum status. “Every year, we feature eight to ten regional, national and international exhibitions which are viewed by more than 40,000 visitors – free of charge,” says Cheryl. “In 2024, we will have our

No city should dare to call itself great without a thriving arts scene. From painting to sculpture to music, the arts help to give life purpose and meaning. Art is the embodiment of creative expression, and it helps define the unique character of every community. To its credit, Hendersonville is home to a diverse and growing arts and cultural movement. Led by world class musicians and artists, artistry is alive and well in the City by the Lake. While art may be found all across the community, nowhere is it more evident than in the city’s cultural hub – the Monthaven Arts & Cultural Center (the MACC). Located in an elegant mansion dating back to the 1860s, the MACC features year-round displays of visual art by talented painters, sculptors, crafters and other artists ranging from local school children through world renowned creatives.

most exciting slate ever, with nine shows scheduled, including exhibitions by Bernie Taupin, Salvador Dali and Kre8.” Along with showcasing famous art, the MACC has not forgotten about the growing community of local artists and students in Sumner County. Every year, Monthaven offers several popular events that have proven to be popular with local art lovers, such as the annual Veterans Art Exhibition and James B. Hawkins Sumner County Student Art Show. During 2023, the MACC operated a temporary satellite gallery at the Streets of Indian Lake that showcased the work of local artists. This year, the display will be relocated to the Monthaven mansion and renamed the Papillion Gallery. “The Papillion Gallery will continue to promote the work of the tremendously talented artists in our region,” says Cheryl. “We will offer special ‘Artist of the Month’ exhibitions and other special events under the direction of Regional Art Director Ruth Chase.” The MACC’s educational mission also includes offering art classes taught

by some of the area’s most talented instructors. The classes are developed with all students in mind, ranging from beginners seeking to learn about art to experienced artists looking to dabble in new media and techniques. “Every year, we hold more than 95 classes and 50 summer art camps that serve over 940 students,” says Cheryl. “To complement our regular fee-based sessions, we also offer special free classes for underrepresented groups and military veterans.” In addition to its artistic and educational focus, the MACC also serves as the focal point for many of Hendersonville’s most creative social activities. Annual events such as the Sweet Summer Concert Series, BBQ & Bourbon, ARTOberFest and the Fat Tuesday celebrations are eagerly anticipated by patrons looking to enjoy evenings of art, music and food with their friends and family. “There is always something new and exciting at the MACC,” says Cheryl. “We invite all of our fellow art lovers to come out and see what we have to offer.”

BECAUSE. CHOCOLATE. C h o c o late Fond ue • 2 cups heavy cream • 1 pound premium semisweet chocolate (recommended: Lindt or Callebaut) • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract • 1 tablespoon brandy • Strawberries, bananas, pineapple, brownies, waffles, marshmallows, Oreos, pound cake, pretzels or any other dipping item of your choice! Put approximately four inches of water in a saucepan and bring to a slow boil. Place a mixing bowl on top and pour in the heavy cream. Let heat. Or, use a double boiler. Meanwhile, break up or chop the chocolate into small pieces. When the cream feels hot to the touch, add chocolate and whisk until smooth. Whisk in vanilla and brandy (optional). Pour into the fondue pot and light the handy fuel underneath. Keep the flame low as not to burn the fondue. Arrange dippers on a platter and enjoy. For the grown-ups, a spiked chocolate drink from our friend, Martha Stewart.

1/2 cup milk 1 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup whole coffee beans 2 ounces semisweet chocolate (61% Valrhona), chopped • 2 tablespoons Kahlua • 1 teaspoon confectioner's sugar • 1 tablespoon dark chocolatecovered coffee beans, chopped In a saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, 1/2 cup cream, and whole coffee beans. Bring to a simmer, turn off heat, cover, and steep beans for 1 hour. Strain liquid and return to saucepan; discard beans. Bring the milk-and-cream mixture back to a simmer, add chocolate, and whisk until incorporated. Remove from heat; whisk in Kahlua. Whip remaining 1/2 cup cream and the confectioners' sugar until soft peaks form. Divide the hot chocolate between 2 cups and garnish each portion with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkling of chopped chocolate-covered coffee beans.

When my kids were little, we would address valentines to classmates, deliver flowers to neighbors and decorate the house with hearts and snowflakes (cut from white coffee filters). For dinner, I would make their favorite meal: dessert! Why not? I'd melt chocolate (the good stuff) and let them line up their dippers. They thought dessert for dinner was magical. Of course, I'd fed them a protein-packed after-school snack and served "dinner" early so they could get their sugar wiggles out before bed. Delightful! Happy Valentine's Day!

Reservations For Two Dreamy destinations for couples looking to get away.

Finding a life partner just might be easier than finding someone you can travel with. Pace, patience and priorities all matter when organizing itineraries, straddling time zones and navigating new places. Do you like languid mornings with room service, wide sandy beaches and white-glove service? Or, do you prefer watching the sunrise in hiking boots, launching into eye-opening excursions and digging to find that hidden gem of a restaurant that serves local food to locals? When the stars align, both partners have an affinity for generally the same kind of vacation, or are willing to compromise. Enjoying travel with your mate is the icing on the (wedding) cake. Here are a few ideas for fabulously romantic getaways. Bon Voyage!

Traveling can be as stressful as it is sublime. Exhausting as it is inspiring. Traveling as a couple requires additional planning and communication with a healthy dose of patience. Much like marriage! But, waking up in a faraway place, exploring unknown terrain together and leaving your routine and all its trappings behind can be therapeutic. You both can take on new roles and release tired habits.
