April - the Month of Discovery Ah, April, how you tease us. Your arrival brings the promise of warmer days, blue skies and colorful flowers, but this is often an illusion. April is a fickle month – one day may find us wearing tees, shorts and flip-flops, and the next day we might be digging out from under an unexpected snowfall. However, April is still the first full month of spring, and that means it is time to explore. To explore means to venture into unfamiliar territory, to learn new things and to break out of the mold of how we’ve always done things. Exploring is a natural part of life – it is how we learn and grow to become our best selves. At Hendersonville Lifestyle, we love to explore our City by the Lake. After relocating from Southern California to Hendersonville in 2020, Nicole and Paul Fedorchek thought that they had finally found their perfect hometown. Friendly people, beautiful scenery, suburban convenience – Hendersonville seemed to check all the boxes. Except one. Hendersonville did not have a Bruster’s Real Ice Cream shop. Bruster’s is a well-known dessert chain with locations in 22 states and two foreign countries. The company is famous for offering dozens of flavors of ice cream that are made in-store daily from fresh ingredients. Bruster’s also has its own dairy in Titusville, Pennsylvania that produces fresh, creamy milk for each store using a proprietary pasteurization process. “Back in California, my husband and I were huge fans of Bruster’s. It was our Friday night date place,” says Nicole. “It didn’t take very long before we really began to miss our old hangout.” Many people would have just moved on and found a new special ice cream shop, but not the Fedorcheks. They missed the fresh ice cream that was the hallmark of Bruster’s, and they were determined to do something about it. CONTINUED >

“Making a positive difference in the community is very important to me.” “My husband always wanted us to have our own business, and after we moved to Hendersonville, we began researching different businesses,” says Nicole. “Deciding to open a Bruster’s was an easy choice for us, as we loved the company values and the product.” Subsequently, the Fedorcheks moved to put their plan into motion, rapidly obtaining a Bruster’s franchise agreement, securing a site on East Main Street and lining up their business financing. Everything seemed to be moving on schedule until August 2021, when Paul passed away unexpectedly. “After Paul’s passing, I had to put everything on hold and regroup for a while,” says Nicole. “However, I knew that I was going to finish the project.” Nicole began to get her plans back on track in early 2022. Construction on her store started in March 2022 and was completed at year's end. What had begun as a dream for the Fedorcheks finally became a reality as Bruster’s of Hendersonville opened its doors for the first time in January 2023. Since then, locals have been able to experience the joy of savoring ice cream made daily in their own hometown. Customer favorites include fresh-baked waffle cones, hot fudge brownie sundaes and the signature Bruster’s banana split. The store also offers a wide variety of custom ice cream cakes and pies that are perfect for special occasions.
“My personal favorite flavor is butter brickle,” says Nicole. “It is made from our special salted and buttered caramel ice cream mixed with delicious chocolate-covered toffee.” Along with working hard to become Hendersonville’s neighborhood ice cream shop, Nicole and her team are also heavily involved in community activities and in supporting local causes. “Making a positive difference in the community is very important to me,” says Nicole. “At Bruster’s, we support a lot of different organizations, including our local schools and our first responders. We also help many young people develop real-life work skills by providing them with their first jobs.” With spring in full bloom, and summer not far behind, now is the perfect time to visit Bruster’s for a cold, tasty treat. “Every year, our customers purchase houseplants for many different reasons. However, the two most popular occasions are sympathy (e.g. funerals) and housewarming welcomes.”
WHAT ARE THE MOST POPULAR HOUSEPLANTS? “Like any other purchase, selecting a houseplant depends upon customer personal preferences. At Brown’s Florist, our top five best-selling living plants are peace lilies, scheffleras, ficuses, violets and orchids.”
“Different plant species require varying amounts of light in order to flourish. For homes or offices that don’t receive a lot of direct light, we recommend peace lilies and different varieties of succulents, such as aloe vera plants.”
WHICH PLANTS WORK BEST WITH DIFFERENT WATERING LEVELS? “As everyone knows, water is critical to the health of any living plant. However, the water levels required for plant health varies significantly from species to species. Peace lilies typically require the most water, due to their tendency to get root bound in dry soil. On the other hand, succulents, orchids and philodendra thrive on much less water.
“Of course, we always recommend talking with a florist or horticulturist to learn about proper plant care. However, there is an amazing app for smartphones called PictureThis that lets users identify their plants just by taking photos of them. Once they have been identified, owners receive tips on caring for their specific plants, as well as general gardening advice. WHAT ARE YOUR TOP RECOMMENDATIONS FOR OWNERS OF ALL KINDS OF HOUSEPLANTS? “First, learn your plant. Research its growth cycle and understand the things that it needs to live and grow. Second, water your plant properly. Too little or too much water can be deadly for some species, so be sure to know how much your plant requires. Third, pay attention to pot size. Pots that are too small can cause some plants to get root bound, which can stunt their growth and, in some cases, kill them. Some plants require periodic replanting into larger pots in order to keep them healthy. Finally, pay attention to your plants – they are not things that you can simply set up and forget about. Like any living things, they need a little periodic tender loving care.”

The Acadia is a popular midsize sport utility vehicle (SUV) which stacks up well against its competition. WOMEN IMPACTING
THE COMMUNITY 2023
The 15th annual Women Impacting the Community Awards luncheon was held at the Bluegrass Yacht & Country Club on Feb. 14. Over 200 women attended the Hendersonville Area Chamber of Commerce event, which celebrated female business and non-profit professionals and their accomplishments. Sponsors for the celebration included Meta, Piedmont Natural Gas, TriStar Hendersonville Medical Center, Goddard School of Hendersonville and Simmons Bank. The program began with an invocation by local entrepreneur Wendy Navarro, and it continued with opening remarks by Tara Tenorio. WSMV Channel 4 Television Anchor and former Woman of the Decade winner Holly Thompson served as the emcee for the remainder of the event. Along with recognition awards, the festivities also included presentations by motivational speakers Britney Campbell, Tiffany Napper and Kirbee Miller. Their topics addressed personal and professional matters, including maintaining focus, daily organization and relaxation. The highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of awards to six local professional women chosen from over thirty nominees. The winners were Jennifer Kotler – Hendersonville High School (Education Impact), Cassandra Cooper – Sandy Cooper Counseling (Healthcare Impact), Julie White – Senior Citizens Center (Nonprofit Impact), Bridget Winstead – Vanderbilt Health Care (Young Professional Impact), Fran Marcou – RE/MAX Choice Properties (Professional Impact) and Krista Marie Oswald – The Song and TGL Farms (Imprint Award).

HISTORIC VENUES HOST ROUNDS OF THE ANNUAL TENNESSEE SONGWRITERS WEEK COMPETITION
Two historic Sumner County venues played host to two rounds of the 2023 Tennessee Songwriters Week competition. Portland’s Temple Theater hosted the 1st round on Feb. 11 in which 15 performers performed their original songs. The 2nd round was held at Gallatin’s Palace Theater on Feb. 25, and it showcased 19 singer/songwriters who had already won preliminary competitions. The bluegrass trio Garrett Boys won the competition, and they will perform at the grand finale event at Nashville’s legendary Bluebird Café. Both events were sponsored locally by Sumner County Tourism, with additional support provided by the Tennessee Department of Tourism Development.
