LIFESTYLE LETTER
August - Summer's End, Kids and Pets Ah, summer… you flew by so fast. We blinked, and suddenly it’s August. As the days grow shorter and kids return to school, we begin to say goodbye to summer. Long, carefree days on the lake capped by evening barbecues are being replaced by hectic morning school routines and after school practices. While the return of regular schedules is a good thing for our children, we will continue to reminisce about the warm summer days. Along with another school year, August begins a new year of Hendersonville Lifestyle. This month marks the start of our 7th year covering the people, places and events that make the City by the Lake such a wonderful place to call home. In recognition of our anniversary, I would like to express my gratitude to all the special folks who have made Hendersonville Lifestyle so successful. First, I want to thank our advertising partners for placing their marketing trust in us. Without their support, we would not be able to provide Hendersonville Lifestyle to the community. We encourage our readers to support these businesses whenever possible, and to let them know that you saw them in the magazine. Next, I want to thank our corporate group for providing us with support and encouragement over the past six years. From the beginning, the City Lifestyle team has gone above and beyond to help us bring you our magazine each month. Continuing, I want to express my gratitude to all our readers who invest their valuable time reading our magazine each month. You are the reason that we work so hard to bring you the best of Hendersonville. Finally, my biggest shout out and thank you must go to our editor, Rick Murray, and his wife Debbie. Not only have they put up with me for the past six years, but they have also demonstrated a strong commitment to delivering a premium product. Rick consistently goes above and beyond to bring you the best in feature articles and photos each month. As we begin our 7th year, we dedicate this month’s issue to the cutest members of our community – our kids and our pets. Their love and senses of wonder make us feel young again. As summer winds down, be sure to relax and spend some time with the ones you love. Stay cool, Hendersonville… LY N N B O W L E S , P U B L I S H E R @HENDERSONVILLELIFESTYLE

Love Me Always Dog Training LOCAL DOG TRAINER EDUCATES HER FURRY STUDENTS WITH PATIENCE AND KINDNESS ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY RICK MURRAY
The arrival of a new puppy is a very exciting time for many families. After all, who can resist the charm of a cuddly little ball of fur? However, along with bringing loads of love and affection, the addition of a new four-footed friend also brings along the stress of showing the new family member how to behave in its new environment. From leash control to sitting still, training a dog often requires skills and patience that many folks do not possess. Fortunately, dog owners in the Hendersonville area do not have to face the training challenge alone. Instead, they can call upon the friendly expertise of Love Me Always Dog Training. Love Me Always was founded by owner and trainer Brittany Bertoli in September 2015. Subsequently, Brittany has skillfully trained dogs in the finer points of pooch etiquette, much to the delight of her customers. “As a kid, I dreamed about working with animals, and being able to take my dog to work with me every day,” says Brittany. “After serving as a dog walker and a vet assistant, I decided to become a dog trainer. In 2014, I completed a course from Animal Behavior College, and I became a certified dog trainer.”
Since then, Brittany has trained over 600 dogs for hundreds of happy pet owners. “Typically, I can train most dogs in three to four weeks,” says Brittany. “I offer a basic course in which I train dogs to obey commands such as sit, stay, come, roll over, sit pretty, follow along a leash and do not jump. I also offer an advanced program that adds in additional commands, including leaving a room, dropping things and getting on/off furniture.” Training costs vary with the time and complexity of each program. Typical fees range from $1,800 to $4,000, depending upon the pet owner’s overall training goals. Most dog owners consider the costs to be a fair investment for a lifetime of good dog behavior. Brittany uses a positivity-based approach in her courses in which dogs are rewarded for good behavior rather than being punished for bad behavior. “My love for all dogs helps me to stay positive during the training process,” says Brittany. “I find that I achieve the best results through praise and rewards, such as treats, toys and games.” Although Brittany follows a similar training regimen for each four-footed student, she does make allowances for

individual dog needs and temperaments. She is keenly aware that, like human students, all dogs are different. “Some dog breeds are easier to train than others,” says Brittany. “For example, the easiest ones to train are working breeds, such as golden retrievers, German shepherds and Labrador retrievers. The most challenging breeds are pugs, Shih Tzus and chihuahuas.” Unlike other trainers, Brittany goes out of her way to keep pet owners aware of their dogs’ status as they go through the training process. “I try to make the training experience fun for the entire family,” says Brittany. “I send each owner daily updates called ‘pup-dates’ to keep the owners informed of the training progress. I like to send out photos and videos of the pups having the time of their lives during training camp.” From start to finish, Brittany endeavors to make the entire training process simple for each dog owner. “I like to keep things simple for my clients”, says Brittany. “To start the process, all that they must do is to make sure that their dogs are fully vaccinated, have collars with ID tags and provide me with their dog food. After the training is complete, I go over all commands with the owners so that they can continue to work with their pets after graduation.” Any dog owners who have decided that the time is right to have their four-footed family members trained need look no further than Love Me Always Dog Training. Artistry is often first recognized during a person’s younger years. Although it may be developmental and nascent in nature, true art talent cannot hide. It is only natural – artists are born to create and to share their creations with the world around them. Locally, one such budding artist is rising Station Camp High School senior Rachel Hawkins. Although only seventeen, the quiet and unassuming Rachel is rapidly becoming known for her ability to create stunning works of visual art. “I first became interested in art when I was around five years old,” says Rachel. “At first, my drawings were crude. However, as I got older, I began to study how human anatomy

really looks, and I started to create drawings that were much more realistic.” Like most artists, Rachel has experimented with different mediums to realize her creations. “Originally, I used a lot of tools, including graphite, colored pencils, markers and pens – basically, anything that I could get my hands on,” says Rachel. “For a while, I dabbled in paint, but over time, I gravitated more toward digital tools for producing my art. Currently, I create most of my work on a computer using Photoshop. However, I do still use graphite and occasionally ink for when I want to work on paper.” Rachel draws her inspiration from the world around her. She likes to keep her options open when coming up with new concepts. “I get many ideas by listening to music, specifically the lyrics,” says Rachel. “I also like to draw inspiration from things that others have created, such as photographs, movies and even YouTube videos. I believe that the more interests that you have as an artist, the more inspiration you will be able to draw upon.” From an early age, Rachel’s artwork has often been on display. At first, it was just in school classrooms for parents to view on open house nights. However, in recent years, Rachel has opted to participate in additional art shows that have expanded her work’s reach to new audiences. “Since I came to Station Camp, I have entered many more art competitions, both at school and externally,” says Rachel. “Recently, my work was displayed in an art show in Nashville at Lipscomb University. I have even begun to sell some of my creations thanks to the exposure that I have received.” During June 2021, Rachel’s burgeoning creative career soared to new heights with her selection to attend the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts. Held at Middle Tennessee State University, the Governor’s School is a residency-based summer intensive program for gifted high school students. The school features an immersive program for students who are interested in visual art, music, theater, dance and film. Admission to the program is highly competitive, with over 1,400 students vying for only 230 slots each year.

“Getting selected for the Governor’s School was a real honor for me,” says Rachel. “At the school, I learned a great deal about the creative world at large, including art history and business. It opened my eyes to a lot of new possibilities.” As Rachel prepares to begin her senior year in high school, she is already thinking ahead about how to build a future career in art. “After I graduate from high school, I plan on attending college and majoring in some form of art,” says Rachel. “Currently, I am considering all my options, ranging from starting out locally at Volunteer State Community College to going directly to an art-specific institution. Like most seniors, I have a lot to think about.” Post college, Rachel plans to pursue art fulltime, although she is uncertain about what her final direction will be. “Right now, I am thinking about going into character design, either for entertainment or illustration,” says Rachel. “I am also intrigued by the notion of becoming a self-employed artist, although I am concerned that might be too risky for me early in my career.” When asked about the meaning behind her creations, Rachel has an immediate answer that reflects wisdom beyond her years. “Art is something that is made by you – it is a product of your own passion,” says Rachel. “It stands alone and speaks for itself. It does not need to be spoken for.” For those interested in seeing more of Rachel’s work, be sure to follow her on Instagram at: Instagram.com/arrete_cette_folie/

Tasty Pet Treats For Beating The Heat INDULGE YOUR FURRY FRIENDS THIS SUMMER WITH HEALTHY SNACKS Summer is filled with long days of sunshine and heaping doses of heat and humidity. Many of us try to beat the heat by treating ourselves to our favorite cool concoctions. From ice cream to sno-cones to iced mochas, nothing refreshes like frozen treats. Like us, our pets also suffer from the heat. They, too, deserve a chance to cool down with their favorite treats. Unfortunately, most human delicacies are not good for our furry friends. Our nutritional needs are very different from those of our pets. Feeding pets the wrong kind of treats can be harmful, resulting in serious health issues. Luckily, there are many healthy choices available that can safely help our pets beat the heat. Here are a few treats available from local merchants and/or online that are sure to elicit a rousing chorus of happy barks and meows from your pets.
