Celebrating Our Ladies

May is one of the most beautiful times of the year in the City by the Lake. Mild weather, blue skies and fragrant, blooming flowers – it is the perfect time to celebrate the ladies in our lives. Wives, daughters, mothers, grandmothers, sisters – we are all the products of their love and tireless devotion. While we honor these women on Mother’s Day, we at Hendersonville Lifestyle like to take it a little bit further. Instead of recognizing our ladies on just a single day, we have crafted our entire May issue to celebrate women who make Hendersonville such a great place in which to live. We begin our festivities by taking a look at three strong and talented women who give of themselves every day in order to help our community grow and prosper. Next, we visit with a talented celebrity duo who share the secrets of how they have maintained a strong life-long mother-daughter bond despite the rigors of show business. Moving on, we check out the atmosphere and cuisine at two local upscale eateries that are pulling out all the stops to ensure a perfect Mother’s Day dining experience for moms and their families. Finally, we venture into the world of leadership with the new president of Volunteer State Community College as she shares some of her dreams and aspirations with us. So now it’s time to kick back, relax and salute all of the special ladies in our community. Take care, Hendersonville.

THREE LADIES MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE CITY BY THE LAKE ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY RICK MURRAY
Inspiring Women Of Hendersonville 2022 Hendersonville is blessed with many women who tirelessly give their time and talents to help make the City by the Lake a great place in which to live. This month Hendersonville Lifestyle celebrates three local leaders who are making a difference every day.
WHO ARE YOU? “I am the founder and CEO of Navarro Creative Group, a local creative firm that specializes in website design, social media and digital marketing. We help clients grow their businesses through innovative strategies that establish and promote their brands.”
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES? “I am the founder of Sumner Women in Business, as well as an active member of the Hendersonville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Hendersonville Rotary Club. I also have the honor of serving on the boards of Monthaven Arts & Cultural Center, the Hendersonville Senior Center and the Salvus Center.”
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? “I love seeing people succeed in doing what they love. Doing good for others and helping them achieve their goals motivates me. After all, who doesn’t love to be a part of someone’s happiness?”
WHAT MAKES HENDERSONVILLE AND SUMNER COUNTY SO SPECIAL FOR YOU? “When my family and I moved to Hendersonville eight years ago, we knew no one. However, we found the community to be very welcoming, and we have made some great friends. I love the fact that Sumner County is thriving and growing in positive and thoughtful ways.”
WHAT IS THE GREATEST LIFE LESSON THAT YOU HAVE LEARNED? “No matter how busy life becomes, take the time to go places you’ve never been, meet new people and learn new things. Step outside of your comfort zone. Life is full of fascinating and interesting people and places, and they all have stories to tell.”
IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN TIME AND GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF ANY ADVICE, WHAT WOULD IT BE? “Don’t allow anyone to dictate your future. Live your life with purpose and intention using the gifts that you have been given. They are yours for a reason.”

WHO ARE YOU? “I’ve been fortunate to have led several different career paths in my life, with each one preparing for the next. All of them involved relationship building, managing of people and improving processes. Organizations that I have served include Volunteer State Community College, Sumner Bank & Trust and the Hendersonville Area Chamber of Commerce.”
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES? “Currently I serve on the boards of Community Life Bridge, Grace Place Ministries, Wilson Bank and Trust Community Council, Sumner County Greenways Committee and Community Church of Hendersonville. I am also an active member and past president of the Hendersonville Rotary Club.”
loving husband, an abiding faith in God and an understanding that the blessings I have been given should be shared with others.”
WHAT MAKES HENDERSONVILLE AND SUMNER COUNTY SO SPECIAL FOR YOU? Hendersonville has been home to me since 1976 when I moved here from Nashville. It has a lovely mix of great recreational facilities, diverse housing options, historic sites and restaurant and retail options. However, the best part of Hendersonville is how people here pitch in to help their neighbors during times of need.”
WHAT IS THE GREATEST LIFE LESSON THAT YOU HAVE LEARNED? “Be kind to others and look for something positive to do every day.”
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?
IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN TIME AND GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF ANY ADVICE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

WHO ARE YOU? “I am the co-owner and ‘Boss Lady’ of Café 393 on Main, Hendersonville’s favorite breakfast, brunch and lunch restaurant.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES? “I am an active member of the Junior Service League of Hendersonville and the Hendersonville Area Chamber of Commerce. Currently, I am serving on the boards of the Senior Center of Hendersonville and Live, Love, Nashville. I am always looking for opportunities to serve our community.”
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? “I find motivation in my children. They are always watching what I do, even when I don’t think they are. I want them to see that helping others is important and that it just feels good to give back and to never expect anything in return. I want them to see that hard work is worth it.”
WHAT MAKES HENDERSONVILLE AND SUMNER COUNTY SO SPECIAL FOR YOU? “I love the fact that even though Hendersonville is growing, it still has a small-town feel. There are some amazing people in this town who are passionate about making our town the best that it can be. I love to serve, and every day I work hard to leave our town a little bit better than the day before.”
WHAT IS THE GREATEST LIFE LESSON THAT YOU HAVE LEARNED? “Make every moment count. Life is like a speeding bullet – as we age, it seems like years go by in the blink of an eye. While we are constantly working, raising families and dealing with responsibilities, it is easy to forget that life is short. Take time to slow down and live life to the fullest.”
IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN TIME AND GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF ANY ADVICE, WHAT WOULD IT BE? “Listen to your parents. They have lifetimes of experience, and they really do know what they are talking about.”

MOTHER AND DAUGHTER BOND SHINES BRIGHTLY IN THE ENTERTAINMENT WORLD
The world of entertainment is an exciting, yet daunting place. Celebrity status brings its bearers fame and fortune, but it often comes at a price. As production demands increase, many personalities find that they are forced to sacrifice their family lives to keep up with their busy schedules. However, some celebrities refuse to let their professions get in the way of their personal lives. They have found a way to achieve career success without breaking family ties. Two of those who have found their perfect balance are the mother and daughter duo of Charlene Tilton and Cherish Lee. Charlene has enjoyed a long and successful career as an actress and producer, while daughter Cherish has chosen to make her marks in the worlds of acting, music and apparel. Recently, Hendersonville Lifestyle sat down with them to find out how they have nourished their mother-daughter bond through the years.
WHAT WAS IT LIKE BEING MOTHER AND DAUGHTER IN A CELEBRITY HOUSEHOLD? “The wonderful thing about being an actress and producer is that I was able to take Cherish with me everywhere I went,” says Charlene. “She was with me on the set of Dallas, and she traveled with me internationally when I was working. For a while, I did a play in London, and Cherish was able to go to school there.” “Looking back at it now, it was absolutely amazing,” adds Cherish. “I got to meet and spend some unforgettable times with some of the most iconic artists, including Michael Jackson and Madonna, who wrote her song ‘Cherish’ for me.”
WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE THINGS THAT YOU ENJOYED DOING TOGETHER? “When I was growing up, Mom was always there, from holidays to birthdays,” says Cherish. “We did everything together – evening walks, going to the movies and travel. We would play pranks on each other, and we loved just being ridiculously silly together.”

HOW ARE YOU LIKE ONE ANOTHER? “You never know how you are like your parent until you are older,” says Cherish. “We are very similar in a lot of areas. We are extremely goofy and playful, yet we also work very hard, and we are committed to what we believe in and what and whom we love.” “Cherish and I have similar senses of humor and empathy,” adds Charlene. “We love to laugh at silly things, but we also care about a lot of causes, including feeding the homeless and rescuing stray animals.”
HOW ARE YOU DIFFERENT FROM ONE ANOTHER? “I’m not sure how Cherish and I are different, but I know she’s the hardest working, kindest, and fiercest protector as a mother,” says Charlene proudly. “This question makes me laugh because we are very different in the way we do the small things,” says Cherish. “I put stuff away – she doesn’t. She wears mismatching socks, but that’s a big no for me. She leaves every kitchen cabinet open, but I go behind her and shut them.”
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE OTHERS FOR MAINTAINING STRONG MOTHER/DAUGHTER RELATIONSHIPS? “Being a mother is by far the most incredible, awe-inspiring, yet totally difficult job in the world,” says Cherish. “Mothers do the best that they can with what they have been given. We should all give our mothers grace, kindness and appreciation. Most of all, we need to pray for them and let them know how much we love them.” “The best advice I can give for maintaining a loving parent-child relationship is for mothers to let their daughters be themselves as adults,” says Charlene. “At times, I am quick to tell Cherish how something should be done. Things go a lot better when I offer my opinion only when she asks for it. She’s intelligent, and she will make the right choices.”
WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT YOUR MOM DID FOR YOU AS A CHILD THAT YOU WILL DO FOR YOUR OWN CHILDREN? “Mom did a really great job at keeping life grounded and honest – she taught me to live life, to love hard and to be happy,” says Cherish. “She has an extraordinary heart filled with kindness that she has poured into me all my life. She is my role model, and I will do my best to pass on her love and wisdom to my children.”

“Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” John F. Kennedy Leadership is essential for success in any organization, from small nonprofits to large corporations and governments. However, it is especially important in the world of education, where leaders have the solemn responsibility of shaping young minds for the future. As president of Volunteer State Community College, Dr. Orinthia Montague understands what it takes to be a leader. As the chief executive of one of the state’s largest community colleges, she is responsible for the education of over 7,000 students spread across four Middle Tennessee campus locations. “I am motivated by people,” says Dr. Montague. “I am driven by the desire to help others achieve their dreams through education.” Dr. Montague took over the helm of Vol State last fall, becoming only the 4th president of the school since its inception over 50 years ago. Although relatively new in her position, she arrived at the school with over 30 years of higher education administration experience. Her resume includes leadership roles at several educational institutions, including the University of Missouri – St. Louis, Truman State University, Normandale Community College and Tompkins Cortland Community College. “I have been involved in higher education all of my professional life,” says Dr. Montague. “I was blessed to have great mentors who saw potential in me and nurtured my passion for leadership.” After former Vol State president Dr. Jerry Faulkner announced his retirement last year, the Tennessee Board of Regents began an extensive search process to select his successor. Upon hearing about the executive opening, Dr. Montague was immediately intrigued. “I was attracted to Vol State’s comprehensive approach to serving the community,” says Dr. Montague. “I love the college’s commitment to strong
program offerings and the Tennessee Board of Regents system organization, support and leadership.” After being named president, Dr. Montague wasted no time in beginning her tenure. She immediately began meeting with faculty, staff and students across the school’s campuses in order to get to know them as individuals. She also held a series of meetings with community leaders in each of the eleven counties served by Vol State to gain a better understanding of their needs. “At Vol State, we embrace community – it is more than just a part of our school name,” says Dr. Montague. “We have an obligation to partner with our various constituencies to ensure that our students are prepared with the knowledge and skills needed to support their goals, as well as those of their communities.” Great leaders achieve success by establishing goals and inspiring others to strive for their achievement. Dr. Montague’s goals are simple, yet profound, and they tie the future success of Vol State to the success of the community. “To achieve our goals, there are three things that we must do and do well,” says Dr. Montague. “First, we need to maximize the educational outcomes for all of our students to prepare them for their careers. Next, we need to continue to develop and support programs that can get more students into the workforce faster. Finally, we need to increase our student enrollment so that we can bring advanced learning to as many people in our community as possible.” Along with her many leadership responsibilities, Dr. Montague has quickly become Vol State’s biggest cheerleader. She recognizes that the college is a true community treasure, and she is eager to tell its story. “Great things are happening every day at Vol State,” says Dr. Montague. “Come see us. We are glad to have people visit our campuses and to show them what we have to offer.”

Mother’s Day is one of the most special occasions of the year. It is a day on which we honor the special ladies in our life who brought each of us into the world. While there are many different ways to celebrate moms on their day, one of the best ways is to treat them to a special dinner at their favorite restaurant. No cooking, no cleanup, no worries – just great food, thirst quenching libations and a festive atmosphere. This year, two of Hendersonville’s finest eateries are going all out to make Mother’s Day 2022 a day to remember. Antica Italia and Sea Salt are both gearing up with special menus that are guaranteed to put a smile on every mother’s face.
ANTICA ITALIA Founded by owner Sean Randall, Antica Italia is one of the newest restaurants gracing Hendersonville’s upscale dining scene. Clad in a welcoming décor of Mediterranean terracotta and turquoise, Antica Italia features classic Italian cuisine with a modern twist. “Antica Italia was built around family, love of food and an amazing atmosphere to bring it all together,” says Sean. “We specialize in unique signature entrees such as handmade Casconcelli, pan-seared sea bass and 45-day aged rib eye steaks. We also offer a variety of wines, beers and custom cocktails designed to complement our guests’ dining experience.” Families with children are always welcome at Antica Italia, and special meal requests can be accommodated for young diners who don’t see what they like on the menu. This Mother’s Day, Antica Italia will be featuring a special brunch-themed menu offering a delicious array of specialty items. Sean and his team will be serving a variety of omelets and poached egg entrees that are sure to delight. To keep the atmosphere light and relaxed, brunch cocktails will be available, including Bellinis, Bloody Marys and Mimosas.
