Ah, February… we welcome you! While your arrival often heralds cold temperatures and frozen precipitation, you also bring us Valentine’s Day, and the warmth and love that accompanies it. Love brings us happiness and joy – it pervades our lives, helping us to find golden rays of sunshine, even on cold, cloudy days. This month, Hendersonville Lifestyle Magazine is all about exploring the love and happiness that surrounds us. To celebrate the month of Valentine’s Day, we bring you several stories of how love is alive and well in our community. First, we take a short road trip over to nearby DeKalb County to visit a little slice of heaven – Evins Mill, one of the Midstate’s finest resort properties. Featuring the finest in accommodations and amenities, the mill is the perfect place for a romantic getaway. Next, we return to the Hendersonville area to visit with three couples who have found the keys to living, loving and working together. Finally, we visit with a local singer/songwriter who has embarked on a new journey that embraces his love of country music and fine tequila. Ready to begin? Good. Give your significant other a hug, pour yourself a relaxing libation and sit down to enjoy our salute to the month of love. Stay warm, Hendersonville!

Time For A Romantic Getaway At
Evins Mill
A little taste of the mountains just a short drive from Hendersonville. 16
T R AV E L J OU R N A L | ENTERTAI NME NT
ARTICLE BY RICK MURRAY PHOTOGRAPHY BY RICK MURRAY AND PROVIDED Nestled in the forested hills of nearby Dekalb County lies one of the mid-state’s most beautiful resort properties – Evins Mill. Just an hour’s drive from Nashville, the scenic retreat is the destination of choice for thousands of visitors each year. From weddings to corporate meetings to weekend getaways, Evins Mill has something for everyone. Evins Mill has a storied history that dates back to 1824, when it was known as Lockhart’s Mill. Over the years, the property has had several owners, including the late Tennessee State Senator Edgar Evins, for whom the mill is named today. “My father purchased the property in 1990 to use as a private retreat for our family and his business,” says William Cochran, Evins Mill owner and manager. “Four years later, we converted the property from private to public use, opening Evins Mill as a unique boutique resort.” At first, the resort was used exclusively for corporate retreats and meetings. However, in the early 2000s, Evins Mill expanded its reach beyond the business community by beginning to host weddings, special events and couples’ getaways. “Since we added the new services, we have seen our business continue to grow,” says William. “In a typical year, we now host over 100 business meetings, 20 weddings or other special events and well over 1,000 couples.” Evins Mill’s lodging options are among the finest at any resort in the state. From individual rooms to a three-bedroom penthouse, the accommodations must be seen to be appreciated. “We offer 20 rooms in several different styles spread across our three Creek Side guest houses and our beautiful Solstice Lodge,” says William. “All of our rooms have private decks with rockers and great views, most featuring the sights and sounds of the nearby water.” Evins Mill also offers several thousand square feet of meeting and special event spaces, including private dining areas, conference rooms, outdoor decks and a spacious reception hall. Along with its rustic accommodations, Evins Mill also offers fine dining served by a worldclass team of chefs, waitstaff and bartenders. From breakfast to dinner, guests are treated to an outstanding array of epicurean delights, CONTINUED >

including such exotic dishes as Down Under Lamb Chops, Cumberland Pork Tenderloin and Gristmill Salmon. “Our hospitality team provides breakfast, lunch and dinner to all overnight patrons at the mill as well as full break and bar service,” says William. “As can be seen in hundreds of on-line reviews, from TripAdvisor to Google to Facebook, the cuisine and service is a memorable highlight for most of our guests.” When not dining or relaxing in their rooms, guests have access to a variety of activities on and around the mill property. Indoor happenings include billiards, ping pong, televisions and a full-service bar. Outdoor pursuits include hiking, fishing, photography and lawn games spread across the mill’s 40-acre expanse. “At its core, Evins Mill is a nature lover’s delight,” says William. “As an official Tennessee State Natural Area, our property is home to several miles of moderate

to challenging hiking trails along wooded bluffs that lead to Carmac Falls, a private 90 ft. waterfall with a swimming hole that is available exclusively for our guests.” Evins Mill is also conveniently located near many sites of local interest across the Cumberland Plateau, including distilleries, wineries, nurseries and art galleries. It is also just a short drive to several popular recreational areas, including Edgar Evins State Park, Center Hill Lake and the RiverWatch Golf Course. Over the past few years, Evins Mill has experienced significant growth in personal travel in which guests come to the resort for short stays to celebrate events such as anniversaries and birthdays. “We use the term ‘leisure travel’ to describe individual couples who come to the mill to celebrate special occasions or to just get away for a spell,” says William. “While couples constitute most of our leisure business, we also host families, too.
Additionally, we welcome guests who book day trip and/or dinner-only reservations, but who do not wish to stay overnight.” Throughout the year, Evins Mill offers a variety of unique themed packages to help guests celebrate their special occasions. In 2022, the resort is offering a special getaway deal in honor of Valentine’s Day that will be in effect from Feb. 11 – 14. Featuring special menus, roses and enhanced turn-down services, Evins Mill is going out of its way to keep the spark of romance burning brightly. This year, if you are looking for a perfect romantic getaway for Valentine’s Day or any other occasion, be sure to check out Evins Mill. Liven Up Your Libations With Black Sheep Tequila

Ryan Griffin
“At the end of the day, all you gotta do is take life with a grain of salt, lime and tequila.” Ryan Griffin. Salt, Lime & Tequila. Throughout time, music has always served as a reflection of the life experiences of songwriters, performers and fans. This tendency is particularly true in country music. From sad breakup tunes to festive party songs, country music has its finger on the pulse of its audience. Many popular country song lyrics are associated with various types of adult libations, including beer, whiskey and wine. These inclusions seem only natural, as the genre tries to reflect the good and bad times of its listeners. Recently, tequila has become the beverage of mention in several popular country songs. It has been prominently featured in such hits as “Tequila” by Dan+Shay, “Tequila Does” by Miranda Lambert and “Tequila Little Time” by Jon Pardi. Most artists are content with just creating and performing songs about tequila. However, others have taken the plunge into the business of the liquor industry. One such entrepreneur is Nashville-based singer/songwriter Josh Mirenda. Known for writing songs which have been recorded by country artists such as Jason Aldean and Dierks Bentley, Josh became interested in the commercial side of tequila after becoming involved with a group that was heavily invested in a new liquor brand, Black Sheep Tequila. “I have a friend and business partner, Mark Bailey, who is involved with Identity Ventures, one of the early investors in Black Sheep Tequila,” says Josh. “One night, we were catching up after dinner, and he told me about Black Sheep Tequila. I was immediately intrigued by the business proposal, and I told him that I wanted to become involved in any way possible. The next day a bottle of Black Sheep was delivered to my living room, and I was sold on the first sip.”
Since his initial foray into the business, Josh has become a board member and partner of the firm. “We have quite a few projects rolling currently, but Black Sheep Tequila is at the front of our priority list,” says Josh. “We know we have something special here, and we are going to give it everything we have.” Black Sheep Tequila was founded in Arandas, Mexico by a group of friends who shared a passion for pure agave tequila. “In the beginning, our founders tasted many different types of tequila to see what they liked the most about each brand,” says Josh. “Over time, they developed their own recipe, which is what you taste when you take a sip of Black Sheep today.” Unlike most of its competitors, Black Sheep Tequila controls its entire manufacturing and distribution process. “Our tequila is distilled and bottled in the rich highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. We currently have over 1 million agave plants in the ground ready to be harvested,” says Josh. “We control everything from the time the plant is put in the dirt to the time the juice hits your lips.” Since its inception, Black Sheep Tequila has grown from humble beginnings into a luxury brand that boasts four different varieties of premium tequila. “Our current offerings include smooth Blanco, smoky oak and caramel Reposado, toasted oak, roasted agave and honey enriched Añejo and Extra Añejo, which features a touch of caramel and light vanilla,” says Josh. “My personal favorite is the Extra Añejo, which is what you will find in my hand 9 times out of 10 if you swing by my house.” Unlike many tequilas, which are best served neat, Black Sheep also goes well in mixed drinks. “Our tequila is unusual in that it is great whether served by itself or mixed into a cocktail,” says Josh. “While it goes great in margaritas, it also makes a delicious old fashioned. Regardless of your preference, you really can’t go wrong with our tequila.” CONTINUED >

“Our tequila is distilled and bottled in the rich highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. We currently have over 1 million agave plants in the ground ready to be harvested.”
Despite the additional workload involved, Josh has found the tequila business to be synergistic with his music career. “Our tequila and my music go hand in hand. I frequently wear Black Sheep attire during concerts, in public appearances and in photoshoots,” says Josh. “By promoting Black Sheep on stage, I have the opportunity to cross-pollinate the music and tequila fan bases. I suspect that I will have my tour bus wrapped with the Black Sheep logo soon.” Black Sheep Tequila is available at most area liquor stores, and it can also be shipped directly to customer homes when ordered from the company’s website.

Creative Planning believes there’s a richer way to wealth. Their team of CFP professionals, CPAs and attorneys work together to create clear customized plans to maximize your wealth, all in one place. Their award-winning in-house services span a variety of financial disciplines, including comprehensive wealth and investment management, insurance, tax prep, trusts, estate, financial and retirement planning. Founded in Overland Park, KS, they have since branched out across the globe, gaining a national reputation that has earned them numerous prestigious awards, including #1 wealth management firm in America by Barron’s, CNBC and Forbes. President and CEO Peter Mallouk shares his wealth of knowledge with approachable financial advice. Two issues coming together at once inspired the creation of Mallouk’s business. “My dad was a physician frustrated with his financial advisor who sold him products and didn’t really explain things well, and I was an estate attorney that saw a full view of the advisory world and thought there was a better way to deliver the all around experience. Ultimately, that led to Creative Planning offering investments and planning as well as legal and tax advice in a very approachable, consultative way.” Mallouk has written several books, including 5 Mistakes Every Investor Makes and How to Avoid Them, and has cowritten Unshakeable: Your Financial Freedom Playbook and The Path: Accelerating Your Journey to Financial Freedom with Tony Robbins. When looking for a financial advisor, find the right one by asking the right questions.

A minority of financial advisors are fiduciaries and operate under laws that share similarities with doctors and lawyers, meaning they do have to act in their client’s best interests. First, ask your advisor if they are registered as a broker or are dually registered. If they say yes to either, that means that part or all of the time, they don’t have to act in your best interests. There are thousands of advisors that will act in your best interest, so take the time to find one. Second, ask your advisor if their parent company, or the ownership of their parent company, own investment vehicles. If the answer is yes, don’t be surprised if some of those investment vehicles find their way into your portfolio. Essentially you may find yourself paying an advisor to then put you in a fund where the company collects another fee. There is no need to accept this conflict. Find a fiduciary that is not dually registered and that does not own their own investment products. At that point, you at least have someone that is incented to act on your behalf all the time. From there, look for education, credentials and experience with people like you.” As for the future, it’s never looked brighter at Creative Planning. “It’s an exciting time—we can do more for our clients today than at any point in our history.
