Happy New Year!

“There I go, turn the page.” Bob Seger. Turn the Page As we turn the page to 2022, we once again venture into uncharted territory, a region offering a new beginning for each of us. As soon as the New Year’s ball dropped, our hearts became filled with excitement and anticipation for what the future will bring. The advent of the new year also represents a new beginning, a chance to start over and work toward achieving our goals. For many of us, these goals include making lifestyle changes that will lead to improved personal wellness. To that end, we bring you the January issue of Hendersonville Lifestyle – our health and fitness edition. As we begin our wellness journey, we pay a visit to one of Hendersonville’s newest gyms, where we learn the inspiring story of an entrepreneur who transformed adversity into success. Next, we talk with a local physical therapist who offers his advice on essential workout items that can help us get the most out of home workouts. Taking a rest break from our workout, we tell you about a couple of best-selling reads that can help you jumpstart your fitness and nutrition regimen. Break over - and we visit with a local dietician who helps us learn what to eat and what to avoid for a healthier lifestyle. We wind down our workout by looking back at a recent event that will benefit local businesses and the Hendersonville community for years to come. One last thing… You may notice that some of our long-time features have new names and looks. Good Times is now City Scene and Around Town is now Business Monthly. The names may have changed, but our commitment to bringing you the best in local happenings remains firm. So now it’s time to have one last sip of champagne, finish up singing Auld Lang Syne, and jump into 2022. Happy New Year, Hendersonville!

Every December, many people choose to commit themselves to resolutions that they wish to achieve in the coming new year. The subjects of the resolutions are quite diverse, touching on such things as careers, finances, education and family. However, year after year, the most popular resolutions involve setting and attaining personal health and fitness goals. Whether it is losing weight or training to run a marathon, many people see the onset of the new year as an opportunity to jumpstart their wellness journeys. While setting personal wellness goals is easy, achieving them is quite a different matter. Some people have the internal drive and commitment to strive toward their goals on their own. Others prefer the comradery and implicit peer pressure found by working out in group fitness settings, such as traditional and boutique gyms. For those who prefer group workouts, choosing which gym or exercise facility to join becomes the critical question. There are many factors to be considered, including workout options, facility hours, classes, personal training and, of course, costs. Determining the right fit for each person can often be a daunting task. Fortunately, for folks living in the Hendersonville area, there is a new gym that offers a wide array of workout

“As an athlete growing up, I was introduced to working out at a young age to enhance my performance,” says Chris. “While playing lacrosse at Cornell University, I developed the discipline of working out on a regular basis as a way of life.” After college, Chris decided that he wanted to go into the health and fitness business. However, he was not comfortable with what he saw in most gym models. “I never liked the traditional gym industry because it was built around high-pressure sales, expensive longterm contracts and unfriendly, intimidating club atmospheres,” says Chris. “However, when the Crunch concept hit the market offering a low-cost, no-contract, customer service-oriented fitness experience, I knew that I had found my calling. I realized that these gyms could change lives for the better, and I wanted to be a part of it.” Shortly before opening Crunch Fitness last spring, Chris received a serious cancer diagnosis that nearly derailed his plans. Fortunately, he was able to successfully f ight his way through his health crisis, thanks in large part to his lifelong commitment to staying in shape.

“After working out diligently over the past 40 years, I had kept myself in good shape and was in tune with my body, so I knew early on that something wasn’t right,” says Chris. “I immediately sought medical care at Vanderbilt, and I underwent an intense and painful set of surgical procedures. Thankfully, due to my overall state of fitness, I was able to survive and recover quickly. I have a wife and two boys that I dearly love – I could not let them down.” Now healthy, Chris brings the same determination that he used to beat cancer to helping his clients achieve their personal goals, regardless of where they are on their fitness journeys. “At Crunch, we have a ‘no judgement’ philosophy – we want our members to come as they are,” says Chris. “We focus on positivity, inclusivity and fun!”

Eating Your Way To A Better You
Local Dietician Offers Menu Advice For Nutritious Meals

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
When people resolve to get into better shape, the first thing that many of them consider is what kind of workout regimen they should follow. They often spend countless hours analyzing gyms, trainers and exercise types to determine the best fit for their individual wellness goals. Unfortunately, many aspiring workout junkies fail to consider what is perhaps the most important fitness element – nutrition. “A healthy diet is important to the vitality of your cardiovascular system,” says TriStar Hendersonville Medical Center Clinical Nutrition Manager Jennifer Stephens, MS, RD, LDN. “Lifestyle interventions, including a well-balanced diet and regular exercise, can help prevent heart attack and stroke, especially in those who have been diagnosed with heart disease.” Given the variety of diets and food choices available, selecting the right nutrition course can appear daunting. However, the process is not as difficult as seems. “It’s okay to start with small dietary changes, as they add up to big changes over time,” says Jennifer. “Following a few simple food guidelines into your daily routine can make a world of difference.” To help our readers get the 411 on nutrition, Hendersonville Lifestyle asked Jennifer for her advice foods to enjoy, limit and to avoid.
WHAT FOOD SOURCES THAT WE SHOULD ENJOY FOR GOOD NUTRITION? Loading your plate with low-calorie fruits and veggies leaves less room for higher calorie foods that promote weight gain. Excess body weight has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, making this a heart-smart move. Hearty whole grains like wheat, brown or wild rice, quinoa and oats boast several benefits. For one, grains are filling, which may help sate desires for betweenmeal snacking. Whole grains are also rich in dietary fiber, which can help keep cholesterol levels in check. Some animal proteins, like ground beef, pork, duck and lamb, are high in saturated fats, which can
increase levels of artery-clogging cholesterol. Instead of these meats, choose lean sources of protein, like chicken or turkey breast and beef with 10% fat or less. Fatty fishes, like salmon and tuna, are a heart-conscious protein choice. Government dietary guidelines recommend men and women consume 8+ ounces of seafood each week. Seafood is low in saturated fats but high in nutrients like protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Legumes, like beans, lentils and peanuts, contain several heart-healthy nutrients: protein, unsaturated fats and fiber. Protein and fiber can help keep you full and prevent overeating at your next meal.
WHAT FOOD SOURCES THAT WE SHOULD LIMIT FOR GOOD NUTRITION? Caffeine, found in coffee, tea and chocolate, is a stimulant consumed by an estimated 90% of adults around the world. Some research suggests coffee is protective against Type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease and heart disease, but the jury is still out. People with heart conditions should limit caffeine intake.
WHAT FOOD SOURCES THAT WE SHOULD AVOID FOR A HEALTHY DIET? Added sugars, found in soda, juice and bakery treats, add unnecessary calories. A study published in JAMA: Internal Medicine suggests excess sugar can hurt your heart, even if you're not overweight. Saturated fats are abundant in foods like processed meats, full-fat dairy, French fries, red meat and package foods like.” to “certain packaged foods. Diets rich in these fats can mess with the balance of cholesterol in your blood – lowering the protective kind (HDL) and bumping up the harmful type (LDL). Sodium is a mineral needed for proper nerve and muscle function. However, too much salt can increase blood pressure, a main contributor to heart disease. The American Heart Association recommends consuming no more than 2,300 milligrams (mg) of sodium a day with a target of 1,500 mg.

Healthy Community
HENDERSONVILLE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BECOMES THE FASTEST GROWING CHAMBER IN AMERICA
Local chambers of commerce play a vital role in maintaining a healthy small business community. Along with driving the engines for economic development, chambers and their members also give back a great deal to their communities through their civic involvement. During the pandemic, most chambers endured tremendous economic hardships. Many did not survive, leaving community advocacy voids that continue to this day. Fortunately, the Hendersonville Area Chamber of Commerce did survive, and it continued to operate and serve throughout the darkest hours of the pandemic. However, that survival came with a price, and a significant loss of members. In response, the Hendersonville Area Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with Your Chamber Connection, held a “December to Remember” membership event on Nov. 30 through Dec. 2. During the fun, team-spirited event, the chamber added over 260 new members, becoming the fastest growing chamber in the nation.
