Vol State and UTC Sign Mechatronics Articulation Agreement Mechatronics students at Volunteer State Community College have a new pathway to earning a bachelor’s degree thanks to a new partnership with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Hendersonville Becomes a Holiday Wonderland in December

Holiday Celebrations are Alive and Well in the City by the Lake Hendersonville is blessed to be home to some of the area’s most popular yuletide festivities. To help you plan your December calendar, Hendersonville Lifestyle is pleased to tell you about several upcoming celebrations that will you get the most out of Christmas 2022. The annual Hendersonville Christmas Boat Parade will take place in Drakes Creek on Dec. 3. Local captains will adorn their vessels with elaborate yuletide decorations to compete for cash prizes. The free parade will begin at Mallard Point and travel to Sanders Ferry Park before returning. Food vendors will be available at both park locations. 16

The historic residence of General Daniel and Sarah Smith will host a free old-fashioned holiday celebration for visitors on Dec. 3. The event will feature tours of Rock Castle, refreshments, gift shopping and photo opportunities with Santa Claus. This event is the perfect way to kick off your yuletide season.

The 53rd annual Hendersonville Christmas Parade will take place on Dec. 3. This year’s parade will feature many floats and vehicles featuring decorations built around the theme “A Very Frosty Christmas”. Following the conclusion of the Hendersonville Christmas Parade on Dec. 4, the annual tree lighting ceremony will take place near the Rotary Fountain in Memorial Park. For many folks, a holiday season would not be complete without a tour of local Christmas lighting exhibits. Fortunately, Hendersonville is home to some of the most exciting light displays to be found in Middle Tennessee. From Memorial Park to locations across the city, the lights are fun for all ages. The Hendersonville Parks Department will publish a map prior to the beginning of the lighting period to help viewers locate the displays.

From Pig Fest to SumnerFest, Hendersonville Is Happening TWO EVENTS THAT SHOWCASE LIVING IN THE CITY BY THE LAKE

In recent years, Hendersonville has become home to a dazzling array of entertainment options. From concerts to festivals, there is always something exciting happening in the City by the Lake. While special events happen year-round in Hendersonville, they are most prevalent during the fall. Cool-weather, falling leaves and outdoor celebrations tend to go hand in hand, drawing large crowds. Two of the city’s marquee events were recently held – Pig Fest and SumnerFest. Pig Fest was held on Oct. 21 – 22 at Veterans Park. The two-day event kicked off on Friday night with a concert featuring the Kentucky Headhunters. It concluded on Saturday with a full slate of activities, including a barbecue competition and pig races. SumnerFest was held at Sanders Ferry Park on Oct. 30. The event offered a variety of activities, including hot air balloons, musical performances and food trucks.

Old Fashioned Apple Cake A RECIPE THAT CAN COMFORT GENERATIONS

DURING A BREEZY FALL DAY, NOTHING IS QUITE AS COMFORTING AS A RECIPE STRAIGHT FROM YOUR MOTHER’S COOKBOOK. With fresh apple slices, cinnamon spice, and everything nice, you’re going to want to add this recipe to your fall food arsenal! INGREDIENTS Cake: + 2 cups sugar + 1 cup oleo (from original recipe) or 1 cup butter + 2 eggs + 2 tsp. soda + 3 cups flour + 1/4 tsp. salt + 6 large apples (peeled and diced) + 1 cup nuts (optional) + 1/2 tsp. cinnamon + 2 tsp. vanilla Beat sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Afterwards, beat in eggs and vanilla. Combine dry ingredients and add to creamed mixture. Fold in apples and nuts. Sauce: + 1 1/2 cups brown sugar + 1 1/2 cups cream + 4 tbsp. butter + 1 tsp vanilla + 2 tbsp. cornstarch DIRECTIONS Combine brown sugar and cornstarch and mix. Add cream, butter and vanilla. Cook in microwave on medium power for 9 to 10 minutes, stirring often. Spoon the caramel sauce over warm pieces

Mulled red wine (Bordeaux of course) with cognac, spiced with cinnamon, star anise, clove, and orange peel.

Light, sparkly, rose punch with a little kick from Bigallet China-China and honey-like sweetness from Lillet Blanc, and vodka for the merriment of all.

Nice, easy-drinking take on the classic 'Suze et Tonique'. Gin and Suze is brightened up with blood orange juice and persimmon syrup then topped off with tonic.

INGREDIENTS

2 bottles of French red wine (I used Burgundy pinot noir) 2 cups Cognac 1/2 cup brown sugar 2 oranges 4 cinnamon sticks 12 cloves 8 star anise INSTRUCTIONS

Combine all ingredients in a large pot. Halve the oranges and squeeze by hand into red wine. Bring to a boil, and then allow to simmer for at least 20 minutes. Serve warm with additional orange slices.

4 cups gin 2 cups Suze 1 cup blood orange juice 1 cup persimmon syrup** Tonic water

INSTRUCTIONS INSTRUCTIONS To make simple, combine equal parts sugar and boiling water and stir to dissolve. Combine vodka, China China, lemon juice, and simple syrup in punch bowl. Add rose, fill with ice, and stir.

Combine all ingredients into a punch bowl with ice and garnish with lemon twist and slices. **PERSIMMON SYRUP INGREDIENTS

1 cups sugar 2 cups water Peel of two lemons INSTRUCTIONS

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and allow to simmer for 20 minutes. Strain and allow to cool. Recipes from Matthew Gibbons

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”

Hendersonville residents love their city, and they are eager to express their civic pride. Currently, an initiative is underway that will offer area drivers a unique way to showcase their city – a custom Hendersonville license plate. The specialty license plates cost $35 more than standard plates, but the difference helps support the Summer Month of Reading Enrichment program (S’More), which helps students maintain reading skills during summer vacation. “The specialized license plate provides a great opportunity to show your pride in Hendersonville and to help our S’More reading program,” says Hendersonville Mayor Jamie Clary. “The plate is a great way to show off Hendersonville everywhere you drive.” 1,000 plates must be sold by Dec. 31 to be produced. Plates may be ordered at SmoreReadingCamp.com.
