After a long, hot summer that lasted through most of September, October has finally arrived, and with it, the return of autumn. Autumn brings cooler weather, changing leaves, fire pits and football. It also signals the start of the holidays, a time filled with warm fellowship and great food. Speaking of great food, the October edition of Hendersonville Lifestyle has got you covered. Since the days of the Alamo, there has always been a special relationship between Texas and Tennessee. There are many commonalities between the two states, including history, culture and country music. However, there is another strong tie between the two states that have risen to the top of the list in recent years – barbecue. From beef briskets to pulled pork to smoked chicken, Texas-style grilling has become all the rage in Tennessee, and in much of the rest of the nation, too. According to an August 2022 survey conducted by BBQ Revolution, Texas barbecue was ranked the best in 33 out of 50 states. Fortunately, Hendersonville has not missed out on the rise of the Texas food wave. Thanks to the efforts of a local entrepreneur, Texas food is alive and well in the City by the Lake at the Meat Sweats. Owned and operated by former Texan and lifelong griller Martin Tudon, the Meat Sweats has been Hendersonville’s go-to place for great meats and sides since 2018. “I have always loved to grill, whether to serve at church potluck dinners or to cater family events,” says Martin. “After moving from the Lone Star State to Tennessee, I realized that I missed Texas home cooking, especially smoked brisket. As a result, I decided to start the Meat Sweats, along with my wife Kelly.”

The Meat Sweats is truly a meat lover’s delight. The restaurant specializes in meat by the pound, including smoked brisket, chicken, beef link, barbecue pork, ribs and burnt ends. The eatery also offers a wide variety of sides and desserts, as well as daily specials during its Tuesday through Friday schedule. “Our most popular items are our signature brisket and our pork belly or brisket burnt ends,” says Martin. “However, we offer many other customer favorites, including Tex-Mex specialties such as barbeque nachos, brisket burritos and hot chicken tacos.” Although best known for its Hendersonville dine-in and take-out location, the Meat Sweats also operates a thriving catering and food truck business. “Our current business breakdown is approximately 30% dine in, 20% take out, 20% catering and 10% food truck,” says Martin. “We are committed to making sure that our customers always receive the best food, service and prices, whether in the restaurant or at local events.” Along with operating his business, Martin is also well known for giving back to the community. It is common to see Martin’s food truck providing food and drink to patrons of local events and fundraisers. “My father emigrated to Texas from Mexico, and he paid a dear price for it. His future business plans include adding a butcher shop, a deli and an ice cream parlor/coffee house. “I believe that to succeed in life and in business, we have to constantly grow and strive to be the best that we can be,” says Martin. “I am trying to follow my father’s advice to rest if I must, but never quit.”

Since the dawn of seafaring, lighthouses have served as waypoints to guide mariners to their destinations. Shining from rugged coasts and outlying islands, their bright lights have served as beacons to ensure safe journeys across the seas. Although not near an ocean, Hendersonville is served by its own local lighthouse – the Lighthouse on the Lake. Owned by Tim and Dr. Jewell Winn, the Lighthouse on the Lake is an upscale event center and private club located on Sanders Ferry Road. The owners bring a great deal of experience to the Lighthouse, with Tim having over 25 years of experience as a culinary chef and caterer, and Jewell’s 30 years in facilities management and administration. “Our center can handle all types of events, including weddings, private parties, corporate functions and other special occasions,” says Jewell. “We also offer the Lighthouse Private Club, in which members enjoy facility access and VIP benefits for a monthly fee.” Featuring a main banquet room and a lower-level hall that can handle 200 people each, the Lighthouse also offers other special accommodations that are specially designed for smaller, more intimate events. “Along with our larger event floors, we also have an enclosed patio, a private green room, an outdoor patio,

Praline Pecan Crunch Snack Mix Ingredients • 8 cups brown sugar or cinnamon cereal squares • 1 cup pecan halves • 1/3 cup light corn syrup • 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar • 3 tablespoons butter • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • 2 cups white chocolate-covered pretzels • 1 cup salted peanuts • 2 packages of large waffle cones or paper bags Instructions 1. Heat oven to 250°F. Spray a 13 x 9-inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray. Combine cereal and pecans in pan and set aside. 2. In a 4-cup microwaveable bowl, combine corn syrup, brown sugar and butter spread. Microwave on HIGH 1 minute 30 seconds. Stir. Microwave 30 seconds to 1 minute 30 seconds or until boiling. 3. Stir vanilla and baking soda into mixture. Pour over cereal mixture; stir to coat evenly. Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 20 minutes. Spread on baking sheet and cool completely; break into pieces. When cooled, add peanuts and pretzels. Makes about 10-11 cups. Store tightly covered.

Football Apple Hand Pies Apple Hand Pies are a perfect hand-held dessert that tastes like fall Ingredients • 21 ounces apple pie filling, store bought or homemade below (you won’t need it all) • 1 tablespoon cinnamon • 2 package pie crusts (4 crusts), I use Pillsbury • 1 egg • 1 teaspoon milk • Store-bought icing in a tube for laces (optional) Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 425°F. 2. Chop apple pie filling into small pieces and mix with cinnamon. Beat the egg with milk until combined. 3. Roll out the pie dough to ⅛-inch thick and cut the dough into12 football shapes. 4. Add 1 ½ tablespoons apple pie filling to 6 of the footballs. 5. Brush egg wash around the edges and top with remaining 6 football shapes. Use a fork to crimp the edges firmly together. Make two slits on the top of the pie. 6. Brush with the remaining egg wash and bake for 12 minutes. 7. After cooled, pipe on laces with icing if using. Notes • Hand pies can be baked in an air fryer for 8-10 minutes at 350°F. • Any flavor of pie filling may be substituted.

Spirits of Sumner Candlelight Cemetery Tour

Many of Sumner County’s most fascinating characters are buried in this cemetery. During the tour, guests will hear some of their stories as they follow the candlelit cemetery path.
