A CONVERSATION WITH JAMIE CLARY

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY RICK MURRAY

AS MAYOR OF HENDERSONVILLE, JAMIE CLARY IS ONE OF THE MOST VISIBLE FIGURES IN THE COMMUNITY. He is constantly on the move performing the many duties of his position, including conducting official city business, welcoming new businesses to town and supporting various civic events. Recently, Hendersonville Lifestyle had an opportunity to sit down with Mayor Clary in order to help our readers get to know him better, and

WHO IS JAMIE CLARY? “I have lived in Hendersonville for almost 50 years, having moved here as a child with my parents. I graduated from Hendersonville High School in 1987, and then I earned a bachelor’s degree in history, government and English from Western Kentucky University. I have always had a passion for Hendersonville and for serving my community. In past years, I served as a city planning commissioner and an alderman, before being elected as mayor of this exceptional city in 2016.” WHAT MAKES HENDERSONVILLE SO SPECIAL FOR YOU? “Having lived here since I was a small child, Hendersonville is the only home that I have ever truly known. It is a close-knit community that values long-term relationships. Some of the people that I met when we first moved here are still my friends, nearly 50 years later. In addition, my entire family lives here, and they share my love for our city.” WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO RUN FOR AND SERVE AS MAYOR? “There are actually two reasons that I ran for mayor. CULINARY CREATIONS

sa lads a re g reat... ARTICLE JENNIFER KAUFMAN

WANT TO EAT HEALTHY? From burgers to even a decadent low-calorie dessert, these healthy recipes, and others like them, will trigger your journey toward shedding those pounds for good, or just eating healthier and feeling better. If you feel overwhelmed by all the conflicting nutrition and diet advice out there, you’re not alone. Healthy eating doesn’t have to be overly complicated. It seems that for every expert who tells you a certain food is good for you, you’ll find another saying exactly the opposite. The truth is while some foods have been shown to have a beneficial effect on mood, it’s your overall diet that’s most important. The cornerstone of a healthy diet should be to replace processed food with real food whenever possible.

ASIAN CHICKEN BURGERS

+ Nonstick cooking spray + 1 small carrot + 1 small red onion, halved + 1 pound ground chicken + 1/4 cup panko (Japanese breadcrumbs)

+ 1/4 cup hoisin sauce + 1 tablespoon grated peeled ginger

+ 3 teaspoons hot Asian chili sauce, such as sambal oelek

+ 8 ounces white mushrooms, thinly sliced

+ 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil

+ Juice of 1 lime + 4 whole-wheat sesame hamburger buns

soy sauce Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Mist a baking sheet with cooking spray. Grate the carrot and 1/2 onion into a large bowl. Add the chicken, panko, 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce, the ginger, 3 teaspoons soy sauce and 1 teaspoon sambal oelek and mix until combined. Shape the chicken mixture into four patties and place on the prepared baking sheet. Bake until cooked through, about 20 minutes. Meanwhile, thinly slice the remaining 1/2 onion. Toss with the mushrooms, sesame oil, lime juice and the remaining 1 teaspoon soy sauce in a bowl. Mix the remaining 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce and 2 teaspoons sambal oelek with 1 tablespoon water in another bowl. Warm the hamburger buns in the oven. Serve the burgers on the buns with a drizzle of the hoisin-sambal sauce and some of the mushroom mixture. 28
