Diagnostic Medical Sonography program is offering free ultrasounds for expecting moms in their second or third trimester this spring. The program organizes the scans so that Vol State students can gain experience with real obstetric patients. The scans will be performed in the Sonography Center at the Vol State campus in Gallatin. It’s equipped with six beds, HD screens and state-of-the-art ultrasound machines. All ultrasounds are supervised by a Vol State faculty member. The students will be scanning on Mondays and Wednesdays through the end of April. The scans usually last one hour. Patients must sign a release of liability and

Featuring more than 70 wedding vendors, the show attracted hundreds of brides-to-be, groomsto-be and their guests. The annual event helps engaged couples connect with area businesses offering a variety of wedding products and services, including venues, florists, caterers, musicians/DJs and photographers/videographers. Ye s t e r d a y Once More PAST AND PRESENT ARE ALIVE AT HISTORIC ROCK CASTLE
IMAGINE… What would it be like to play games on the grounds of a mansion built by a man who was friends with Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson? What would it be like to camp out in woods with roots that precede the Revolutionary War and the founding of the state of Tennessee? What would it be like to host dinners and parties that draw thousands of guests each year? Canyon, Toren and Kyran Gilbert don’t have to imagine—they know. Along with their parents, Sam and Jessica, they enjoy experiences such as these year-round. As the caretakers-in-residence of Historic Rock Castle in Hendersonville, the Gilberts are privileged to live each day in a place preserved in time. Most Hendersonville residents are familiar with Rock Castle, an 18-acre historic property located on the peninsula at the intersection of Indian Lake Road and Rock Castle Lane. Built in the late 1700s by prominent surveyor and Revolutionary War veteran Daniel Smith, Rock Castle stands today as the oldest structure in Middle Tennessee. The property remained in the hands of the Smith family and descendants until 1969, when Daniel Smith’s great-great-granddaughter Sarah Crosby Berry deeded the property to the state of Tennessee. However, despite great market conditions, finding the right home can be a struggle. Whether you are looking at existing homes or considering a custom build, there are many decisions that have to be made. To help our readers navigate the housing maze, we asked builder Hannah Custom Homes to help us understand some of the issues involved with building a new home. Founded in 2005 by Dusty Hannah together with his sister, Misty Pyle, and her husband, Jeff, Hannah Custom Homes builds custom-designed homes ranging from 3,000 square feet and up in size. They offer a wide variety of home designs, including traditional and European styles. Along with their design expertise, Hannah has a proven construction process that helps ensure their customers get exactly what they want in their new homes. Three of their recent construction projects showcase their design and construction expertise. The first home is a traditional-style 5,000-plus-square-foot home built on 27 Gatlinburg-like acres in the heart of Hendersonville. Among its many amenities, the home offers one room that provides a lookout view of land. WHAT IS THE COST PER SQUARE FOOT? The actual costs vary with every home, depending upon style, materials and features. Each of our homes is unique based on the aesthetics and plans chosen by the customer, and each is priced accordingly. WHERE DO I GET MY HOUSE PLANS? For new plans, we assist our customers in having their plans drawn by local architects or draftsmen. Alternatively, stock plans can also be purchased from many sources, including numerous online home design vendors. WHAT ARE THE PROPER STEPS TO TAKE BEFORE BUILDING A CUSTOM HOME? First, customers need to work with the builder to establish a tentative construction budget. Once the budget has been determined, then financing can be arranged with local lenders as needed. The initial financing will consist of a construction loan which will be later replaced by a permanent home loan once the build is complete. Next, customers need to locate a suitable parcel of land for the construction site. We usually assist our customers with this process at a very early stage to help them select land that is appropriate for their project. Customers should never finalize their house plans until they have confirmed that their desired land is suitable for building. And given its symbolic meanings, turquoise is the perfect introduction to the warm, homey environment that permeates the popular restaurant. “The home feel is quintessential to who we are,” says owner Kori Langford. “My belief is that the world would be a lot better place if we all sat on our front porches and got to know our neighbors.” Created by Kori and her family in late 2017, Myers’ Front Porch’s mission is to serve up healthy, delicious food in a relaxing, friendly atmosphere. Every day, Kori and her team serve a diverse array of menu items featuring nitrate-free vegetables, locally sourced, healthy ingredients and an assortment of indulgent treats. However, delivering great food is not Kori’s only goal. She is also working hard to establish her restaurant as a go-to community meeting spot. “We purposely created a pleasing decor with comfortable patio furniture to help make it feel like a home environment,” Kori says. “We specifically don’t have televisions. We want people to connect and get to know each other.” Myers’ status as a community hub is further enhanced by outstanding customer service provided by its friendly staff. From the front counter to the kitchen, the entire team operates under a “servant leadership” model in which they endeavor to feed each customers body, mind and soul. “We believe in operating on a spiritual, Christian basis,” Kori says. “We believe that we are doing what we are called to do. Hospitality is our mission.” Like all restaurants, Myers’ has a certain number of service steps that have to be performed to ensure that guests receive a quality dining experience. service points, Kori and her team build in additional time to let staff members connect with customers. “Our employees are servant-focused and hospitality-focused. They love to get to know our customers and share their life experiences,” Kori says. “Over time, our customers cease to be just customers; they become family.” Thus far, the Myers’ Front Porch approach has proven successful. “It’s amazing to me how many people have connected here,” Kori says. “Strangers meet and become friends and regulars here. For example, we have our Tuesday morning knitting group. The group started out with two ladies who like to knit, and it has grown into 12 to 15 people now, most of whom do not knit. Instead of knitting, they come to break bread together and to enjoy each other’s fellowship in a comfortable setting that they have come to love.” Kori’s feelings are echoed by regular customer and knitter, Denise Jackson-Holder. “Myers’ is comfortable and welcoming, Julie White fills a drink at the coffee and tea bar.

This is our place to come at least once a week to have ‘our time.’” Denise’s sentiments are also shared by customer Julie White. “I always see a lot of my friends here,” Julie says. “It is relaxing, welcoming, local. It is also a great place to have business meetings.” Recently, Myers’ has been hosting additional activities featuring singer/songwriters, actors and comedians. These free events are held along with other traditional gatherings, including birthday parties, club get-togethers and business meetings. “We want Myers’ to be a fun destination,” Kori says. “We want local folks to think of us as the community-centric place to go.” Customer Ginger McClendon sums it up well. “I come to Myers’ Front Porch for lunch and laughs.” 162 E.
