Whether in closets, attics, garages or pantries, new things just seem to come into a home faster than old things go out, resulting in an inevitable space crunch. To resolve this quandary, Hendersonville Lifestyle Magazine went to a local storage professional to help our readers learn to how to bring order out of chaos. Sandra Sokol and her husband, Mark, are co-owners of Closets by Design, a storage franchise located in Franklin, Tennessee, that serves customers throughout Middle Tennessee. Closets by Design has been designing and installing creative storage solutions for homeowners for more than 13 years. In this article, Sandra shares her favorite tips on how to declutter and organize existing storage space.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN TO KEEP ITEMS? Most storage experts recommend keeping clothing articles based on two simple criteria: usage and flexibility. If the article is worn regularly, or if it is considered to be a wardrobe staple,

“Carefully designed closets and storage places can help people determine their most worn items at a glance,” Sandra says. “Everybody feels better when they are clean, decluttered and organized.”

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN TO STORE ITEMS? Sandra encourages homeowners to carefully consider items before discarding them. Clothing articles such as out-of-season pieces and specialized articles should usually be removed from hangers and stored until the appropriate seasons or occasions arise. All stored items should be carefully folded and placed in sealed, protective bins or tubs to keep them safe from the elements.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN TO DISCARD ITEMS? Sandra recommends turning around all hanging items so that the hanger hooks are backward (facing outward). Every time an item is worn and rehung, that item’s hanger is returned to the normal position (hook facing inward).

“Take a look at your closet after six months, and you can immediately see which items have not been worn since their hangars have not been turned back to the normal position,” she says.

“If you haven’t worn these items during the period, it is probably best to discard them.” Second, she recommends color-coding items when hanging them in the closet. “When hanging clothing of similar colors together, it is easy to tell whether you have too many or not enough items of individual hues. If you have too many similar items, it is time to discard the extras,” she says. Third, Sandra suggests checking existing home “inventories,” e.g., attics, pantries and/or garages, before purchasing new items. By checking existing stock, homeowners can avoid purchasing unneeded, duplicate items. Home reviews also provide an opportunity to discard items that have reached expiration dates. IT WAS A SPRING FASHION SHOW FOR THE FALL SEASON, BUT A MERE CATWALK WOULD NOT SUFFICE. Instead, a stage was needed, and a titanic one, too. Because upon it—and before a packed crowd

downtown last April—stood a group of larger-than-life hometown heroes: Jurrell Casey and Taylor Lewan, Kevin Byard and Delanie Walker, Brian Orakpo and Marcus Mariota. Each man his own person, each man blessed with his own particular skills and abilities, but each man also fused into a single, cohesive unit through the power of teamwork and the magic of style. It was the unveiling of the Titans’ new uniforms, a preview of the team’s seriously sharp new look. The crowd went wild. Let’s take it from the top, starting with the helmet. Gone are the two blue stripes, replaced by a single slash of two-toned silver. It’s a sword, a symbol that runs throughout the new uniform. The inspiration? Think Titans of Greek mythology, the primordial gods who battled the Olympians in what were arguably the first Super Bowls, a series of epic struggles called the Titanomachy. Also, think Parthenon and Nashville as the “Athens of the South.” It quickly becomes clear that the ancient Greek theme to our city predates even Music Row and hot chicken. After former coach Bruce Hatfield left to join the college staff at Tennessee Tech, longtime Hendersonville defensive coordinator James Beasley was promoted to the head coach position. Last season, Hendersonville finished with an overall record of 6-5 in TSSAA Division I Class 6A Region 4 action before falling to Rutherford County powerhouse Blackman. Beech High School The Beech High School Buccaneers are eager to return to the playing field this fall after finishing with an overall record of 14-1 (10-0 in the regular season) during the 2017 campaign. Led by twotime state championship head coach Anthony Crabtree, the Beech Buccaneers are eager to keep up the momentum that resulted in being runners-up in the 2017 TSSAA Class 5A football finals. The Buccaneers open their schedule at home against Wilson Central, followed by away games at Henry County (played at Austin Peay State University) and Glencliff. Other key matchups include region games against Glencliff, Hillsboro, Gallatin and Hillwood, as well as local rivals Hendersonville and Station Camp. Beech will be led by the senior duo of running back/linebacker Aaron Foxx and tight end Davis Ward. During the 2017 campaign, the Station Camp Bison struggled in Class 6A Region 4, posting a 1-9 record. Guided by longtime head coach Shaun Hollinsworth, the Bison are looking to be much more competitive than last season. After opening the season with a home matchup against Nashville Antioch, the Bison will be tested by local rivals Gallatin and Hendersonville during weeks two and three. This year, Gallatin hopes to once again reach and go deep in the TSSAA playoffs under 7th-year head coach Mark Williams.
