A N E W D AY RACHEL MCAULEY ANSWERS HER CALLING TO RESCUE HORSES ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY RICK MURRAY

SINCE SHE WAS A LITTLE GIRL, RACHEL MCAULEY HAS ALWAYS LOVED HORSES. Having grown up in Hendersonville, she has vivid memories of when the city had many acres of beautiful pasture land holding stables filled with beautiful horses. She began pleading with her parents to buy her a horse. For years, she always received the same answer: “No, they are just too expensive.” Her best friend Nicole was asking her parents the same question and receiving the same answer. However,

changed. Unbeknown to her and Nicole, their parents had gotten together and worked out an arrangement to jointly purchase a horse and then share the ongoing care expenses. Since their birthdays were close together, they found out about their upcoming gift at the same time. "On our birthdays, we opened our presents and discovered that we each had been given an apple and some hay. At that time, we realized that we were finally going to get a horse," Rachel says. "Shortly thereafter, our parents took us to an auction to pick out our horse, Jake, a quarter-walker gelding.” Over the years, the sharing arrangement worked out well for both the girls and the horse. "We found out that having two owners was good for Jake in that we were able to give him twice the love, care and attention," Rachel says. Despite many good years, Rachel and Nicole eventually sold their horse to new owners as they prepared to head off to college. "Although it saddened us to give up Jake, we knew that it was the right thing to do," Rachel says. "We would not have had the time to take care of him the way that he deserved.” Many years, a husband and three kids later, Rachel felt the calling for another horse. She finally got a new horse, Doc, in part to serve as a companion for her then 2-year-old special needs daughter, Mary. CONTINUED >

“I wanted Mary to enjoy the company of a horse," she says. "Even though she couldn’t ride Doc, he could still be her friend. Eventually, we purchased carts so that Doc could pull Mary around in her wheelchair." As Rachel's love of horses grew, she became aware of the growing problem of animal abandonment and mistreatment across Middle Tennessee. One of her friends, Peg Petreli, was actively involved with several groups that worked to rescue and find new homes for animals in distress. “I knew that she was involved with rescuing lots of animals, and I felt the calling to help," she says. "I told her to please call me when she needed help on a rescue, and I would come." About seven years ago, Rachel finally received a call from Peg asking her to volunteer for some rescues. “First, it was a dog rescue in Gallatin. Then, we did a bird rescue in Portland. Although I had never been around birds, the sad condition of the birds really got to me. I now have compassion for all kinds of animals," Rachel says. Over time, Rachel realized that while she would help with all kinds of rescues, she was drawn to situations involving larger animals, particularly horses. “I always try to connect to horses emotionally, with heart, with love, with care, with snuggles and with treats," she says. Five years ago, Rachel became involved with a Gallatin-based rescue nonprofit agency called Volunteer Equine Advocates. This organization is made up of volunteers who have rescued hundreds of abandoned or abused horses during its 15-year existence. Recently rebranded as “A New Day,” the agency’s tagline is “Reclaim, Redeem, Rehome.” Shortly after beginning to work with the group, Rachel decided to commit herself to combatting horse abandonment and abuse. Through the agency, Rachel soon discovered that she was drawn to one particular horse, an abandoned Arabian. “At first, he wouldn’t come to me, and he was very feisty. However, somehow we connected. He would follow me and come to me. All of my interactions with him were fun and games," she says. Eventually, she adopted the horse and named him White Beauty. As her relationship with White Beauty grew, Rachel learned a powerful lesson. She discovered that even though she couldn’t ride White Beauty, she didn’t miss it at all. “To me, horses are companions. I am perfectly fine loving a horse, caring for a horse and being on the ground while doing it," she says. Today, Rachel has three rescue horses: Saint, Country and Liza. Saint and Liza are both quarter horses while Country is a paint/quarter mix. Rachel nursed all three of them back to health, and they happily reside on a farm in Hendersonville. As time has gone on, Rachel has realized that horse rescue work is never-ending. From freeing distressed horses and caring for them, to finding them new homes, the need for rescue services far outweighs the available volunteer and financial resources. Despite the obstacles, Rachel and her fellow volunteers are determined to keep on waging the war against equine abuse. "Rescue is very rewarding in the end," she says. "When someone comes to pick out and take a recovered horse home, you know that your job is done.”

ACROSS THE UNITED STATES, PET OWNERS ARE GOING TO NEW HEIGHTS IN THE CARE AND PAMPERING OF THEIR FURRY COMPANIONS. Today, dogs, cats and other animals are not simply adopted and provided basic care. Instead, modern-day pet parents treat their animals like family members. From exotic foods to extended veterinary care to custom grooming and massages, today’s pets have it made. Pet influence is everywhere, from the explosive growth of high-end pet supply stores to the large volume of pet product commercials aired daily on television. According to the American Pet Products Association, Americans spent $69.51 billion on pet care in 2017. This spending is expected to rise to $72.13 billion in 2018. As usual, Hendersonville is no exception to this trend. Local pet owners go to great lengths to ensure that their animal companions have the highest quality nourishment, housing, recreation and healthcare. In this article, Hendersonville Lifestyle Magazine will introduce you to three prominent local pet owners and their furry (and feathered) friends. 20

TOWANA & LYNN BOWleS + AVERY Hendersonville residents Towana and Lynn Bowles lead active lives in the community. After spending years working in the newspaper industry, Towana now works in practice support at the Parallon Business Performance group of HCA. Lynn, too, got his start in the newspaper business, specializing in automotive coverage and advertising. Today, he is best known for being the publisher of Hendersonville Lifestyle Magazine. WHAT IS YOUR PET'S NAME? Our dog’s name is Avery, who is featured in this article. (Also pictured is 24 year-old Military Macaw, Sarge.) HOW OLD IS HE? Avery turned 11 on July 4, 2018. WHAT IS THE TYPE OR BREED OF YOUR PET? Avery is a bit exotic. He is a bichon frise, a small dog breed known for having friendly, outgoing personalities. WHAT IS YOUR PET’S FAVORITE TOY? Avery’s current favorite is an elephant squeeze toy. WHAT IS YOUR PET’S FAVORITE FOOD? While Avery likes a lot of different foods, his favorite things to eat are Greenie Treats. WHERE IS YOUR PET’S FAVORITE PLACE TO PLAY? Avery likes to play everywhere, but his happy place is our family room. HOW DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PET? I gave Avery to Towana as an anniversary gift. WHAT IS AN INTERESTING/FUNNY STORY ABOUT YOUR PET? When he was young, Towana always kept Avery on a leash when taking him out to use the bathroom. As he grew older, I encouraged Towana to take him out without the leash occasionally to help train him. One day, Towana finally took him outside without a leash. We had a large pond in our backyard at the time. When Avery saw the pond, he noticed a couple of ducks in it. He immediately took off after them, diving into the pond head first. Towana ran back into the house to get me, yelling that she was afraid that Avery was going to drown. When we both came back outside, Avery was sitting on the grass, playfully shaking himself off albeit covered in green pond moss. It took several baths before the green moss tint left his fur. Needless to say, Towana resumed taking him outside on a leash.

Since then, Debrah has spent more than 30 years practicing law in such diverse areas as criminal defense, worker’s compensation and plaintiff litigation. She also has more than 10 years of experience as a Rule 31 Mediator in family law. Currently, Debrah's practice is concentrated on family matters, mediation, child custody/support, adoption, parental rights and estate planning. WHAT IS THE NAME OF YOUR PET? My dog’s name is Gus. However, we usually think of him as Gus, the Law Dog. HOW OLD IS YOUR PET? Gus is 7 years old. WHAT IS THE TYPE OR BREED OF YOUR PET? Gus is a maltese/shih tzu mix. WHAT IS YOUR PET’S FAVORITE TOY? Gus loves his little blue bear. WHAT IS YOUR PET’S FAVORITE FOOD? Like most dogs, Gus likes a lot of things, but his favorite food is popcorn. WHERE IS YOUR PET’S FAVORITE PLACE TO PLAY? Gus loves to play on my bed. He doesn’t care what he is doing as long as it is on my bed. HOW DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PET? Gus was the shy one of his litter. When I picked him up and he put his little head on my neck, I knew that he was the one. We chose each other. WHAT IS AN INTERESTING/FUNNY STORY ABOUT YOUR PET? Gus has been going to the law office with us since we got him at 7 weeks old. He is our baby, and we could not imagine leaving him home alone. He understands the phrases ‘let's go to work’ and ‘let's go home.’ At one time, I said ‘there won't be any dogs in our house.’ I have gladly had to eat those words many times over!

Tammy & Jonathan Hayes + Cherokee Longtime Hendersonville residents Tammy and Jonathan Hayes lead active lives in the community. A former teacher and women’s ministry director at First Baptist Church in Hendersonville, Tammy is currently serving as the District 1 Representative on the Sumner County School Board. Jonathan is a retired medical sales manager who is the president of the Hendersonville Rotary Club. WHAT IS THE NAME OF YOUR PET? Our cat’s name is Cherokee. Our neighbors found her as a stray near the boat docks at the Cherokee Steak House just outside of Gallatin and brought her home. They named her Cherokee after where they found her. She left them later and moved in with us. HOW OLD IS YOUR PET? She thinks that she is 2 years old, but we think that she is probably about 15 years old. WHAT IS THE TYPE OR BREED OF YOUR PET? We are not sure, but we do know that she thinks she is royalty. According to our vet, she is from Europe. Given her diva personality, we think that she is from the south of France. WHAT IS YOUR PET’S FAVORITE TOY? Her favorite toys are baby birds—she loves to bring them to the front door to show them off. WHAT IS YOUR PET’S FAVORITE FOOD? Cherokee eats Purina Cat Chow as a rule, but she loves Whiskas Temptations treats. WHERE IS YOUR PET’S FAVORITE PLACE TO PLAY? Her favorite play place is anywhere that Jonathan is at any given time. She follows him everywhere that he goes unless she is not in the mood. HOW DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PET? We didn’t choose her, she chose us. One night, she left the neighbors who had brought her home, crawled through our screen door and then jumped on our bed. That’s when we knew that she was at least interested in living with us. WHAT IS AN INTERESTING/FUNNY STORY ABOUT YOUR PET? Dogs have owners, but Cherokee has staff. We live to serve her royal needs.

with Rashawn

EIGHT-YEAR-OLD RASHAWN HOOSIER IS ALWAYS ON THE GO. The son of Jerome and Christie Hoosier, Rashawn

is a rising third-grader at Beech Elementary School in Hendersonville. Every day, he approaches both school and outside interests with a passion. Whether participating in team sports or playing video games, Rashawn always gives his best. Despite his interest in recreational activities, Rashawn does not neglect his academic side. He achieved a fourthgrade reading level in the second grade. Below, Rashawn tells us about his five favorite things. Rashawn loves football at all levels, particularly professional football. Like many folks across the country, Rashawn’s favorite pro team is the Dallas Cowboys.

“I love lots of sports, but I really love baseball. My favorite team is the Boston Red Sox.”

Rashawn takes his Nintendo Switch video game with him everywhere he goes. His favorite game to play is Mario Odyssey.

All active kids love to eat, and Rashawn is no exception. However, instead of going for burgers and fries like many kids his age, Rashawn’s favorite food is Panda Express Orange Chicken.

“I love to play lots of team sports, but I also love running. I am really fast when I run in short races.” 34
