Sponsored by the city of Hendersonville, VFW Post 9851 and the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 240, this event honored all U.S. military veterans as well as today's fire, police and emergency services providers. This year's parade featured more than 50 entrants. The parade's grand marshal was Korean War veteran Guy Clary. Fox 17 News anchor Scott Couch served as the parade emcee.

I think a large part of my job is listening—trying to understand what people need.” Buchanan comes most recently from Be Better Advertising in Franklin where she was operations and data analyst. NEW VOL STATE DEGREE ON THE FRONT LINES OF PUBLIC HEALTH Volunteer State Community College has a new health sciences associate of science degree program that is designed to train workers for public health administration jobs. The Vol State Health Sciences degree includes courses that you might expect, such as medical terminology and anatomy and physiology, but it also includes other important education for a public health worker, including fundamentals of speech communication and introduction to ethics. The program is intended to transfer to a bachelor’s degree program in health sciences at a university. Most public health jobs require at least a four-year degree. The Sumner County Health Department handles many responsibilities, including the operation of health clinics, promoting immunizations and preventing the spread of disease. Public health administrators have many roles within the field. “The roles of public health administrators are evolving to include community economic development, CONTINUED >

AMAZING 15-MINUTE TOTAL FITNESS WORKOUT A TOTAL-BODY WORKOUT IN LESS TIME THAN A COFFEE BREAK

1.

500-METER ROW Purpose: To elevate the heart rate and increase body's blood flow Equipment: Rowing machine Row on a rowing machine as rapidly as possible until a total of 500 meters has been achieved. An additional benefit of this routine is a short period of high-intensity calorie burn. If a rowing machine is not available, substitute a short ¼-mile sprint outside. Rest for 45 seconds.

IT SEEMS THAT EVERYONE IS TRYING TO HOP ABOARD THE FITNESS TRAIN THIS TIME OF YEAR. Many people find their answers through local fitness centers, boutique gyms and/or personal trainers. Others choose to pursue a solo path toward wellness, preferring to follow a workout regimen within the confines of their own home and on their own time. In response to this need, local personal trainer Andrew Murray has developed a quick five-exercise workout that can bring about noticeable changes in strength and conditioning in less time than a routine coffee break. This routine is designed to provide a good dose of cardio conditioning while also working most upper and lower body muscle groups. The routine consists of two sets of five easy exercises and it requires minimal time and equipment.

2.

DUMBBELL CURL INTO SHOULDER PRESS Purpose: To strengthen and tone the biceps and front deltoid (shoulder) muscles Equipment: Light to moderate dumbbells, 10 to 25 pounds Begin by performing traditional dumbbell arm curls. The 9Round approach offers a trainer-guided total-body workout incorporating nine separate exercises. Typically, each 30-minute workout period can burn up to 500 calories while providing significant cardio conditioning. Most of the 9Round clients achieve their fitness goals by

Clients are carefully monitored during each session using a unique system called 9Round Pulse, a computer-based method providing real-time feedback to both clients and trainers to ensure that heart rates and effort levels meet target goals. 9Round also offers complete nutritional guidance through an online client portal that provides custom meal plans. Plans also incorporate portion and calorie intake guidance that support client weight management goals. Owner Abbie Rice says she and Josh “take advantage of all of the nutrition and fitness guidance offered by 9Round.

PILATES

We are the living results of our product.” REFORMER AND MAT-BASED PILATES WORKOUT Owner Tom Fielder opened the Club Pilates at Indian Lake fitness center in April 2017. Offering progressive levels of workouts, Club Pilates focuses on three separate goals: core body conditioning, body stretching and spinal decompression. Due to the low impact nature of the workouts, Pilates has become a popular exercise choice for physical therapy and injury rehabilitation. Club Pilates offers a contemporary blend of mat-based and reformer-based Pilates. Reformer machines enable hundreds of different workout routines that are carefully controlled by adjustable springs and positions. Club Pilates offers seven different types of classes which are offered at four different skill levels. Currently, the facility offers more than 50 classes. All classes are taught by experienced instructors who are certified in both mat-based and reformer-based Pilates. These certifications require a minimum of 500 hours of specialized training, and they typically take between six months to a few years to complete. “Pilates is for everyone, from 14 years old to 85 years old, or older," Tom says. "It is good for people beginning their fitness journeys as well as for professional athletes. As our slogan says, 'do Pilates, do life.'” CONTINUED >

DIET BY COLOR

(CON TI N U ED)

In the plant world, color and hue rule in terms of disease-fighting capability. Each color represents different benefits and the deeper the color, the more benefit there is.

Red

For example, red foods, like tomatoes, have lycopene which may play a role in helping to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. + Tomatoes, strawberries, watermelon, raspberries

Purple

Purple plants, like blueberries and eggplants, have anthocyanins, which have been found to help benefit the brain. + Eggplant, blueberries, plums, beets

Green

Green plants provide multiple benefits that improve health; two of my favorites—broccoli and kale—have high amounts of lutein and folate which can help enhance eye, brain and heart health. + Broccoli, spinach, kale, green tea, avocado, celery, snap peas

Orange

Some orange foods, like sweet potatoes and carrots, are packed with vitamin A, and other orange foods, like oranges and nectarines, are loaded with vitamin C. + Oranges, carrots, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, orange peppers, peaches

White

White is the color of allicin, found in vegetables like cauliflower, white onions and garlic, which helps protect against heart disease. + Cauliflower, bananas, white onions, garlic, parsnips

Black

Black foods, like black beans, black rice and blackberries, are high in anthocyanin, a pigment that has been linked to reducing cancer cell proliferation. + Black beans, blackberries

The point is, variety is key, and keeping a colorful plate will always serve you better than focusing on one simple color. Track your fruit and vegetable consumption with Lose It!—a personal, app-based weight loss program used by millions of people around the world. Founded in 2008, 72 percent of Lose It!’s users have achieved clinically significant weight loss according to a 2016 study with the National Institute of Health. Free and paid versions are available in Apple’s app store and Google Play store in the “Health and Fitness” category.

Founded in 2005 by Dusty Hannah with sister Misty Pyle and husband Jeff Pyle, Hannah Custom Homes starts every project with a full in-depth interview with the customer to gain insight on their vision, style, colors and other features they might like in their new custom home. They find out why the customer wants a custom home and what their expectations are. The owners of this home came with plans, and Hannah Custom Homes was able to assist them with developing the architectural design and specifications. The home features a very open floor plan at a little more than 6,000 square feet with lively interiors and energetic exteriors including a full walkout basement. There are hardwood floors throughout, custom trim and cabinetry and tile in all wet areas of the home. The colors of the home flow from the exterior to interior, and while the owners chose their colors, they also paid a color specialist to check their selection for better peace of mind to ensure their vision was met. The full basement features polished cement floor throughout and includes a full kitchen and additional laundry room. The owners have been extremely happy working with Dusty and Hannah Custom Homes on this project. Going into the project, one of their main concerns was being over budget or behind schedule. That was not a problem thanks to Dusty being very accessible and providing them with Buildertrend. Buildertrend software is a project management program that will show you the progression of your home build from anywhere you have internet access. "We were able to see and schedule events at different critical paths and even get questions answered," the owner says. WHAT I KNOW NOW

THAT I WISH I KNEW THEN CONFESSIONS FROM THREE LOCAL TRAINERS

AS WE GROW OLDER, WE OFTEN FIND OURSELVES REFLECTING ON LESSONS THAT WE HAVE LEARNED IN OUR LIVES. Quite often, we realize that if we had learned some of these lessons sooner rather than later, our lives might have been less stressful. Personal trainers are just like the rest of us in this respect. Given a few moments to reflect, most trainers can recount bits of wisdom they wish they had known when they started their careers.

Eventually, Colby realized he didn't enjoy the retail sales environment and wanted to make the leap to full-time personal training. After earning an International Fitness Professionals Association certification, Cowan has now been training for more than eight years.

“I wish I would have known that supplements won’t fix everything. When I was in high school and college, I felt constant pressure to take supplements. I spent a lot of money in the local nutrition stores thinking that supplements such as creatine and whey protein would do all the hard work for me. I only have so much time available for my clients, and when one fails to show up, I lose money. Early on, I was so afraid of losing a client that I would let them cancel with no penalty. However, that approach didn’t bring me any more client loyalty, and it cost me money.”
