AS NOVEMBER ROLLS AROUND, WE’RE ANXIOUSLY AWAITING THE APPROACH OF THANKSGIVING, THE HOLIDAY SEASON AND TIME SPENT WITH OUR LOVED ONES. The winding down of the year always brings about a time of reflection for us— remembering everything we’ve done or accomplished in months past; looking back on turkey disaster stories, mornings watching the Thanksgiving Day parade or afternoons spent curled up on the couch after one too many pieces of pie; thinking of the people, experiences and things we’ve been blessed with in the past year. As we press pause on the hustle and bustle of life putting together a monthly magazine, we’re able to look back on the past year and, most meaningfully, the stories from all of you that have made what we do possible. The grand opening of Mary’s Magical Place last month will go down as one of the most meaningful stories this year for Hendersonville. This playground will bring joy to kids and families for many years to come. We also take this time to think of those less fortunate and encourage you to take the opportunity this giving season to donate to local organizations or charities giving back locally. We hope that as you read this issue, you—like us—find inspiration in the lives and experiences of your neighbors and the connections that have been made. Happy Thanksgiving, Hendersonville!

“OH, THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS.” “I’ll be home for Christmas.” Most of us are familiar with these classic songs, and we embrace their sentiments as we celebrate the holidays with our friends and loved ones. However, as we approach another season of festivals and celebrations, we need to be mindful of our local neighbors who cannot be with their families. From first responders to active duty military personnel, there are many among us whose calls of duty supersede holiday festivities. Let’s take a look at three local professionals who have learned how to balance work responsibilities with family traditions.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAMILY HOLIDAY TRADITIONS? During my early years, I didn’t have any children, so I didn’t mind working the holidays. However, when my two children came along, working holidays became more difficult. To deal with the work vs. holiday conflicts, we created several new family traditions. For example, if I have to work on Thanksgiving, we celebrate the holiday on the Wednesday before the holiday or the Friday afterward. When my kids were young and I had to work on Christmas, we told them that each year Santa Claus chooses 1,000 families who get to celebrate early and that we were one of those families. They loved it. WHAT ARE YOUR WORK HOLIDAY TRADITIONS? On most holidays, we celebrate with a special potluck dinner for all of the staff on duty. Usually, all of our families are invited to the dinner as well so they can share a meal together. During Christmas, we put up a tree and we decorate the fire station with holiday trimmings. By creating our own holiday traditions, we are able to maintain the positive attitudes that the public expects and deserves. CONTINUED >

WHAT ARE YOUR FAMILY HOLIDAY TRADITIONS? At the hospital, we work two major holidays each year, with one of them being either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. As such, my time off is very limited. During November, we have a “friendsgiving” dinner each year with several local friends. If I have to work on Thanksgiving, we do it on the Wednesday before or on the weekend after. If I have to work on Christmas Day, we tell our two kids that Santa will come to our house early for a “practice run” so that they will get their presents early. WHAT ARE YOUR WORK HOLIDAY TRADITIONS? At the hospital, we all realize that having to work the holidays by helping bring new life into the world is an honor. We love to decorate the birth center for holidays. We also have a breakfast or a potluck in the birth center for our staff and their families. At Christmas, one of our nurses has a husband who dresses up as Santa every Christmas morning to entertain the families.

For example, we may eat Thanksgiving dinner on the day before Thanksgiving, and we may open Christmas presents on Dec. 26 instead of Christmas Day. WHAT ARE YOUR WORK HOLIDAY TRADITIONS? We always try to meet all of our shifts full force out of our obligation to the public. The only time that we work skeleton shifts is on Christmas Eve, mainly to

The delicious tastes and aromas of turkey, dressing and desserts transcend the day, evoking memories of holidays past. We all love to savor traditional comfort foods lovingly crafted from family recipes that have been handed down for generations. These days, many of us also choose to prepare a special Thanksgiving meal for our four-legged family members. After all, dogs and cats enjoy treats, too! As we approach Thanksgiving Day, we would like to share two special recipes with our readers. The first recipe is for a traditional family dessert, Deep-Dish Pumpkin Pie. The second one is for a comfort entree that is also pet-friendly, Harvest Stew.
+ 1 unbaked deep-dish pie crust + 3/4 cup sugar + 1/2 teaspoon salt + 1 teaspoon cinnamon + 1/2 teaspoon ginger + 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves + 1 15-ounce can solid pack pumpkin + 1 12-ounce can evaporated milk (Pet) + 2 eggs
DIRECTIONS
1. Combine sugar, salt and other spices in a small bowl. 2. Beat eggs slightly in a large bowl. 3. Stir in the pumpkin and sugar/spice mixture until everything is thoroughly blended. 4. Gradually stir in evaporated milk. 5. Pour mixture into the deep-dish pie crust. 6. Bake the pie in a preheated 425-degree oven for 15 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees F, and continue baking for 40-50 more minutes or until knife inserted into pie center comes out clean.

DEEP-DISH PUMPKIN PIE
INGREDIENTS
HARVEST STEW INGREDIENTS + 1 pound ground beef, turkey or chicken + 2 large potatoes + 4 tablespoons olive oil + 1/2 cup canned green peas + 1 medium carrot + 3 cups water
DIRECTIONS 1. Peel and dice the carrot and the potatoes, and place them in a roasting dish. Add 2 tablespoons olive oil and stir. Roast the mixture in a preheated 350-degree oven for 1 hour or until the potatoes are soft and browned. 2. Brown the meat in a large pan with 2 tablespoons olive oil. 3. Add the carrot and potatoes mix to the meat along with 3 cups water. 4. Add green peas. 5. Heat the pan until the mixture begins to boil; let simmer for 30-40 minutes. Be sure to stir the mixture periodically while it simmers. 6. Let the stew cool down to thicken before serving in bowls. November 2018 | Hendersonville Lifestyle

FAMILIES.
Featuring
a
certified, timed 5-mile race as well as an untimed family-friendly 5K run/walk, the Loop has something for everyone. The Loop provides a great opportunity for families to get in an early morning workout before hitting the dining room table later in the day. While the 5-mile race is for more serious runners, the 5K run/walk is the perfect choice for family members of all ages. Unlike many events, the Loop 5K is both stroller- and pet-friendly. In addition, many Loop participants choose to dress in festive holiday costumes at the event. In keeping with the Thanksgiving Day spirit, all race proceeds benefit COMPASS: Community Outreach
