And although it typically marks the winding down of the year, November is also a season of beginnings. This month begins the season of giving and the season of receiving. It begins the season of family gatherings and time spent with friends. It’s the month of Thanksgiving Day parades, Black Friday shopping, mom’s traditional holiday dinners and naps on the couch when you’ve had too much turkey ... or casserole ... or pie …

VOLUNTEER STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION HARVEST MOON SOIREE The 12th annual Volunteer State Community College Foundation Harvest Moon Soirée was held on Friday night, September 15, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Hendersonville. Since the event’s beginning in 2006, the soirée has raised more than $500,000 for student scholarships. This year’s affair, supported by the primary sponsor Sumner Regional Medical Center, Tammy and Jonathan Hayes and Volunteer State Community College President Jerry Faulkner during the Volunteer State Community College Foundation Harvest Moon Soiree.

WORLD INDYCAR CHAMPION JOSEF NEWGARDEN FETED IN HENDERSONVILLE The 2017 World IndyCar Champion, Josef Newgarden, returned to his hometown of Hendersonville for a celebration in his name on September 20. The event, held at Drakes Creek Park, began with the reading of a proclamation by Hendersonville Mayor Jamie Clary declaring the day as Joseph Newgarden Day. Following the proclamation, Newgarden participated in a press conference with area journalists and then took part in a question and answer session with guests. After the event, Newgarden remained at the park to participate in photo opportunities with fans.

OCTOBER 17 DECLARED GOLDEN APPLE DAY The Hendersonville Chamber Foundation declared Tuesday, October 17, Golden Apple Day to celebrate and honor Hendersonville area teachers. In recognition of this proclamation, the Hendersonville Chamber Foundation hosted a celebratory event for teachers from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Bluegrass Yacht & Country Club. Several years ago, the Hendersonville Chamber Foundation created the Golden Apple Grant program to promote education in the greater Hendersonville area. The purpose of the grant program is to help teachers address unique needs or to develop creative new programs which advance teaching and learning within the guidelines of their schools. All approved grant projects must fit within established school missions coincide with the goals and objectives of the school or school system. Although projects may focus on a single teacher and classroom, teams supporting grade or discipline-wide results are also supported, as well as schoolwide projects. To prepare for the event, Hendersonville Area Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Kathleen Hawkins requested community support through the contribution of personalized notes and greeting cards expressing gratitude toward local teachers. Also, area businesses and citizens were encouraged to donate gift cards and door prizes to provide to teachers during the Golden Apple Day celebration. The Chamber foundation is the 501(c)(3) nonprofit arm of the Hendersonville Area Chamber whose mission is to provide educational resources to the Hendersonville community. Fundraising for the foundation is obtained through personal and business donations, advertising sales for the Portrait of Hendersonville and the annual Freedom Festival event held every July 3. ooking for some fun, easy recipes to try with your kids this Thanksgiving? Here are a few simple

ideas that you and your youngsters can create and enjoy before, during and after November 23!

BETTY CROCKER TURKEY COOKIES

PREP TIME: 30 MINUTES, TOTAL TIME: 1 HOUR MAKES 9 COOKIES

INGREDIENTS 1 1 pound, 1.5-ounce pouch sugar cookie mix Miniature candy-coated milk chocolate candies such as M&M’s 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour Green, red, orange and yellow sugar sprinkles 1/3 cup butter melted red or orange tube of decorating icing or gel 1 egg ¾ cup whipped white frosting

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Heat oven to 375 degrees. In a medium bowl, stir cookie mix, flour, butter and egg until soft dough forms. 2. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough about ¼ inch thick. Cut with 3 to 3 ½ -inch round cookie cutter to make 18 rounds. Place 9 rounds 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet. 3. Bake 7 to 9 minutes or until light golden brown around the edges. Allow to cool 2 minutes then transfer cookies from baking sheet to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 30 minutes. 4. To make turkey feathers, cut each of the remaining rounds into 6 equal wedges. Place 9 wedges 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Sprinkle remaining 45 wedges with colored sugars as desired. Place 1 inch apart on cookie sheet. 5. Bake wedges 7 to 9 minutes or until light golden brown around the edges. Allow to cool 2 minutes then transfer cookies from baking sheet to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 15 minutes. 6. Spread frosting on round cookies. Place undecorated and decorated wedges on cookies. Add candy-coated candies for eyes and draw feet with icing.

LEFTOVER TURKEY SOUP WITH STUFFING DUMPLINGS INGREDIENTS 1 ½ cups sliced carrots 5-6 14.5-ounce cans of turkey or chicken broth 1 ½ cups sliced celery 2 cups egg noodles 1 ½ cups cubed potatoes 2 cups cooked turkey 1 medium onion, diced Leftover stuffing shaped into 1- to 2-inch balls Salt and pepper to taste

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Put carrots, celery, onion and potatoes in a large pot. Cover with broth and cook on medium heat until veggies are almost tender, about 20 minutes. 2. Add egg noodles and cook for another 10 minutes or so. 3. Add turkey and stuffing balls until heated through. 4. Add salt and pepper to taste and serve. Recipe courtesy of Elizabeth Fern.

ORANGE CRANBERRY SAUCE WITH CHERRIES

SERVES 12

INGREDIENTS 1 pound fresh cranberries ½ cup cranberry juice 2 cups sugar Finely grated zest of 1 orange ½ cup orange juice 1 cup dried cherries

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Pick through the cranberries, rinse, then drain well. 2. Combine the cranberries, sugar, orange juice, cranberry juice and orange zest in a pan. Place over medium heat; boil slowly until the berries pop open, about 10 minutes. 3. Skim the foam off the surface with a metal spoon. Stir in the cherries and let cool to room temperature. Cover and refrigerate. Will last up to one month in the fridge.

Two of the most popular eateries in Hendersonville

share a common name: Casa Vieja. Casa Vieja offers authentic Mexican cuisine served in a relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere. Owned and operated by Hector Salazar and his brother, Jaime, the restaurants are routinely packed with customers eager to enjoy authentic Mexican food and drinks served by enthusiastic servers. Hector Salazar began his restaurant career more than 25 years ago in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. From Hopkinsville, he and his family moved to Lebanon, Tennessee, and then Tupelo, Mississippi, before opening the first La Terraza restaurant in Nashville in 2000. After several years in business with La Terraza, Hector and Jaime Salazar partnered with another investor to open the first Casa Vieja restaurant on East Main Street in Hendersonville in 2007. The original restaurant was followed up by the opening of the second Casa Vieja eatery, located near the Hendersonville Walmart, in 2012. The son of a dairy and pork farmer in Mexico, Hector learned the value of hard work at an early age. His father “taught him how to work long hours and that nothing is given to you," he says. "You must work hard and appreciate the things that you have. Ultimately, you must make your own way in life.” After moving to the United States, Hector began his career as a busboy and a waiter before finally earning a spot as a restaurant manager. While working as a manager, he and his brother saved as much as they could to accumulate enough money to open a restaurant of their own. "We are very blessed to be in Hendersonville," he says. "We are especially grateful for our customers who have become a part of our family. Without our customers and our family, Casa Vieja would not exist.” When asked what distinguishes Casa Vieja from its competition, Hector responds that “it is our atmosphere, our people and our food. We use the best possible quality ingredients, including prime cuts of meat, poultry and seafood. We strive to be just a little more authentic than the rest of our competitors. Our service and our cuisine sets us apart.” 22

Hendersonville’s rapid growth over the past decade brought in many restaurants offering a wide range of cuisines. Although they provided local diners with new choices, none of them offered the intimate, fine dining experience so often found in larger cities. That void was filled with the opening of the Chop House Steakhouse on Anderson Lane in 2007. Serving entrees ranging from steak burgers to prime rib and soft cut pork chops, the Chop House has become one of Hendersonville’s most popular eateries. The Hendersonville Chop House is managed and operated by local restaurateur and managing partner Josh Woodham, who came to Sumner County in 2011. Woodham started in the restaurant business when he was “a 15-year-old kid in high school washing dishes at a Shoney’s.” After college, Woodham decided to stay in the business “because restaurant work was something that he liked and that he could do well.” Around the same time, he went to work for the parent company of the Chop House chain, Connor Concepts. After spending several years with the company in various positions, Woodham was given the opportunity to manage the Hendersonville Chop House. When asked what he loves most about his business, Woodham says “I love the excitement, the rush that you get when you get busy–the adrenaline gets flowing when I am working alongside people in a teamwork environment." He then adds he “enjoys executing our plan every day.
