y love affair with photography began with a Kodak Brownie that I took on a first grade field trip many years ago. I knew something was different about me right away when I realized that I was more interested in taking photos and learning how to use the camera than I was in the field trip. But I never intended to become a professional photographer. Truth is, I never thought that I was good enough to pursue such a creative and artistic vocation. When my family and I moved to Hendersonville in 2001, I felt as though I had finally found a place to call "home" for the rest of my life. A few years later, when my twin sons, Matthew and Andrew, made the football team at Station Camp, I knew I had to get involved. At the end of their first year of play the high school football photographer announced his retirement. I distinctly remember telling my wife, Debbie, that I wanted to take his place. We had no idea how much that simple decision would transform our lives. Soon my photography efforts began to get noticed, first by students and parents and later by the local media. Within a year my photos were being published on a regular basis. As I took on more assignments, I discovered that I have a passion for photojournalism and community events. Things progressed steadily, yet slowly, until May 2010. At that time, my life as a photographer changed forever. The great flood that overwhelmed our area spawned a photograph that took me from being a community photographer to being a nationally recognized and award-winning photographer. While my work remained regularly published in local media, it was now appearing in national and even international media, including the front page of The Tennessean and National Geographic. In June of this year I had an opportunity to retire from the corporate world and devote my efforts to Memories by Murray (MBM) on a fulltime basis. It was around the same time, I became acquainted with Lynn Bowles, the publisher of Hendersonville Lifestyle. Lynn was interested in using some of my work in his magazine. I was impressed with his vision of publishing a high quality magazine focusing on the city that I love. Since that meeting, I have continued to contribute material to the magazine on a regular basis. I have truly been blessed to have the opportunity to help spread the word about our City by the Lake.

Sumner County’s average ACT composite score increased from 20.4 to 20.8. This is the highest ACT composite score posted by Sumner County students since 2009, when the state began requiring all Tennessee students to take the ACT assessment regardless of their post-high school plans. Tennessee is one of only 13 states to require all high school students to take the ACT. Sumner County’s composite score continues to be above the state’s composite score (19.4), a tradition that Sumner County has long held. Merrol Hyde Magnet had the district’s highest ACT composite of 28.5, with the Middle College High School at Vol State scoring a 24.6. Hendersonville High School posted its highest score in five years at 22.2, up from a score of 21.3 in 2015. Beech High School showed the highest gain with a composite score of 21.6, representing a dramatic increase over the school’s composite score of 20.4 last year. White House High School also showed tremendous improvement, moving from a 19.5 composite last year to 20.4 this year. Sumner County students also improved in all four of their college-ready benchmarks, improving the overall readiness average by two percent. The ACT score is one of the key metrics colleges use when evaluating prospective students. Scores weigh heavily on admission decisions and scholarship offers.

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation awards grants each year to nonprofit organizations, schools and libraries within a 20-mile radius of a Dollar General store or distribution center to support adult, family, summer and youth literacy programs. The Dollar General Literacy Foundation also supports customers interested in learning how to read, speak English or prepare for the high school equivalency test. At the cash register of every Dollar General store, customers may pick up a brochure with a postage-paid reply card that can be mailed in for a referral to a local organization that offers free literacy services. Committed to helping increase the literacy skills of individuals of all ages, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $127 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping nearly 7.9 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education since its inception in 1993. Grant applications for the 2017 grant cycle to benefit adult, family, summer and youth literacy programs will be available on January 2, 2017.

s a working mom of three I rarely have the chance to take time for myself. And when I do, honestly, I feel a little guilty about it. So, when the opportunity came about to spend the afternoon at the new Salt MedSpa in Hendersonville and share my experience, I jumped on it. I mean it was for work; I had to, right? I am so glad I did. Owned by Glen and Karen Mitchell and daughter Sarah, Salt MedSpa did not disappoint. The services weren’t just about pampering, although there was plenty of that, the focus was more therapeutic and natural. Sarah says, “We want people to know that there are other, more natural ways to help heal yourself so you may not have to take allergy medications every day or if you have eczema or cystic fibrosis, that there are ways to help, naturally.” It’s something she has personal experience with, and ultimately, what led the Mitchells to start this business. Sarah was living in the Dominican Republic and came home to Hendersonville to address some health issues. She explains, “Mom saw a Groupon for a salt cave in Nashville and said let’s go try it. We thought, at worst it’s a good girls’ day. I felt immediate relief, so I loved it. On the way back we talked about how this could totally go over in Hendersonville. We researched it, thought about how we could put our own spin on it and here we are.”

I personally had never heard of halotherapy, or salt therapy. But in fact, it was discovered in the 1800s in Poland when miners noticed their frequent exposure to salt mines yielded positive results in their skin and respiratory health. Halotherapy today is a holistic method that mimics the natural microclimate of those salt mines. “Essentially one 45 minute session in our halochamber, or salt room, is about the equivalent of three days in the salt air at the beach,” says Karen. Salt covers the floor and the walls in the room while a halogenerator crushes pharmaceutical grade salt into micronized particles that are dispersed through the air.

While the explanation of what it is and how it works may be complex, the experience of a session in the room itself couldn’t have been easier. It’s such a peaceful setting. You simply walk in, sit in a zero gravity chair with a cozy blanket and relax to the sounds of soft music. The air feels clean and crisp as you breathe it in. While my allergies have never been serious, I do always feel a pressure behind my cheeks and in my ears during allergy season. After 20 minutes in the salt room, I could feel popping and the pressure starting to ease. I was surprised to have that effect so quickly but it felt great. The benefits don’t just extend to those with allergies. Halotherapy helps with conditions such as asthma, COPD, bronchitis, psoriasis, acne, eczema, cystic fibrosis, sinus infections, stress and fatigue and trouble sleeping as well. And the space is designed to be convenient to those with wheelchairs and walkers. It’s also particularly beneficial in children. “Children really enjoy their time here. And their parents can come in and play with them in the salt or just relax in a chair,” says Karen. I can see why with their adorable, children’s salt room decorated in an under-the-sea theme with toys and a television to watch movies or cartoons. Salt MedSpa also offers massages and facials. My experience with both was excellent and I loved that the staff was so knowledgeable and friendly. What’s more, they use all natural products. The Mitchells are passionate about “helping people take care of themselves in a natural way.” Karen explains, “Women are the worst, but a lot of men are the same way. They are too busy in their lives with work and children. So, all of our services provide a way to take care of yourself naturally while trying to find ways to get you in and out quickly.” Their mini-facials and 30-minute massage options do just the trick and their HaloYoga is ideal for multitaskers, combining a salt treatment and yoga at the same time. Even their HydraFacials “are only 30 to 45 minutes, perfect for a lunch break,” says Sarah. I will definitely take time again to visit Salt MedSpa. he air is cooler, the pools are closed and the days are getting shorter, but you still have plenty of options for fun in Hendersonville with Holder Family Fun Center. Over 96,000 square feet of fun in fact, according to Barbara Holder. She and husband Dan Holder introduced the fun center concept to Hendersonville in the mid-90s and haven’t looked back. Since their renovation in 2011, the Holders have truly created a space that has “something for all ages.” Barbara continues, “It’s our attractions that make us unique, the indoor go-karts, two-story laser tag, mini glow golf, those are things that no one else has. We even own our arcade games so we can always try to have something new and different.” It’s always been a favorite spot for my kids. When asked their favorite attraction my son said, “I love them all.” And my daughter couldn’t decide either, listing bungee jumping, 18

bumper cars and their indoor playground area as her top picks. As many times as we’ve been there, we’ve yet to do it all, with roller skating and the rock wall next on the list. While their list of attractions, for the young and young at heart, is nearly endless, Holder also boasts two banquet rooms and three birthday party rooms with onsite catering and audio visual equipment. Barbara notes that they’ve hosted everything from company events, holiday parties and birthdays to family reunions, anniversary parties and even a wedding.

Their bowling center, open 24 hours a day, offers 36 lanes, eight of which are in a private area with its own bar. And their 11th Frame Nightclub has karaoke on Friday and live entertainment on Saturday. But Holder is not just known around Hendersonville. “We draw from a 150-mile radius,” says Barbara. “We had a family drive in from Atlanta last winter to bring their son for his birthday. All he wanted to do was ride go-karts and do putt putt, but when they searched the Internet we were the only ones that had both indoor. We get a lot of groups from Kentucky, Clarksville and all around

Nashville. It’s hard to find the quality, newness and variety that we have. People will drive farther for that. Plus our wristbands are for six hours so you can make a day of it.” Above all, Barbara believes it’s that personal touch and sense of community and fun that keeps people coming back. She explains, “We are locally owned and operated and we are here daily, dedicated to total family fun. And many of our staff have been with us for years as well. It’s like we’re family.” And that’s what keeps Holder going strong, whatever the season.
