Happy Thanksgiving!
PUBLISHER
Crissie Bown | crissie.bown@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R
Paige Candee | paige.candee@citylifestyle.com
If you’ve been reading along with us for a while, you know I’m a total sap for all things holidays. I love this time of year—the nostalgia, the events, and even the beautiful chaos that comes with the hustle and bustle. My husband and I are suckers for traditions in the Bown household, and so many of our favorite memories seem to be made this time of year. Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays because it’s about one thing: being together. Full bellies, football, laughter, family, and a little time to slow down and appreciate it all. A few years ago, as I was buying this magazine, I was going through some difficult health issues. As I enter my third year removed from that chapter of my life, I’m reminded how much there is to be grateful for. Life looks very different now. We’ve celebrated beautiful moments, weathered hard ones, and lost loved ones along the way. While gratitude doesn’t mean everything is perfect, it does remind us to recognize the good that exists alongside the hard. I feel incredibly lucky to have a front-row seat to the amazing things people in our community are doing to give back. I’m constantly in awe of the generosity and heart of the people here in Henderson. In this issue, we’re celebrating some of them and the meaningful ways they’re giving back to our community. Wherever this Thanksgiving finds you, I hope you’re able to slow down, hug your people a little tighter, laugh a little louder, and take a moment to appreciate all that you have. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being part of this journey with us— for welcoming us into your homes and your lives through this magazine. Happy Thanksgiving, friends. May your hearts—and your plates—be full.

Grateful for the Neighbors Who Trust Us
This season is about the people around your table, the home that holds them, and the life you’ve worked hard to build. We’re grateful to be the agency so many Henderson families trust to protect it all.
Row House finished second nationally in the annual Regatta competition following a format change focused on performance improvement. Members lowered their average 500-meter split time from three minutes and ten seconds to three minutes and two seconds over a onemonth testing period. Coaches attribute the result to technique instruction, increased exercise intensity, and studio-wide participation. The milestone marks the studio’s third consecutive top three finish in the nationwide event. Photography by Row House Henderson

Pre-planning often comes with a stigma rooted by fear and focused on death. The LegacyPath app is designed to change that. Creator Damiana Franklin, with more than 20 years’ experience as a CPA, understands the challenges loved ones face when left to grieve amid the overwhelming responsibility of locating important documents, especially when a loss happens unexpectedly. “We accumulate so much throughout our lives—bank and investment accounts, insurance policies, tax information, trusts, wills, property records, business interests, digital accounts and passwords,” Damiana says. “Most of us know where those things are, but the real question is: Would someone else know?” With LegacyPath, the goal is to eliminate that guesswork. The secure app allows users to upload vital information for easy access while providing space to store treasured memories and personal letters. During a time of uncertainty, LegacyPath aims to provide the clarity many seek early in their grief journeys. This, Damiana says, is a gift that
anyone can leave behind for those they love. “Every answer you can provide in advance is one less decision your family has to make while grieving.” LegacyPath exists in part because of Damiana’s experience with longtime husband-and-wife clients, David and Karen. After David’s sudden, unexpected passing, Karen was unable to grieve without also facing the overwhelming task of locating and managing the details of their life together that David had handled. Watching her navigate this challenge was the push Damiana needed to do something. “I kept thinking, ‘Why do we leave our loved ones to figure all of this out during one of the hardest moments of their lives? What if David could have left Karen a roadmap?’” These questions kept tugging at her heartstrings and ultimately helped Damiana shape LegacyPath: caring for loved ones even in one’s absence. “To me, pre-planning isn’t focusing on death,” she explains. “It’s saying, ‘I’ve thought about you. I’ve prepared for you.
And when the time comes, I don’t want you spending those first days searching through filing cabinets, phones and email accounts trying to piece together my life.’” Damiana designed LegacyPath to make this act of love as easy as possible for everyone. She knew that the more user-friendly the app was, the more likely people would be to take advantage of what it offers: clarity, comfort and peace of mind. The app’s organized system for finances and other important documents is a complement to Damiana’s background in accounting. But these logistical features, she says, do not fully capture the role that LegacyPath can play during a dark time.
“LegacyPath goes beyond finances. There is a very human side to it,” Damiana adds. “Financial documents matter, but so does hearing someone’s voice again or having a message from someone you love.” Having access to information that helps ensure bills are paid or an estate is settled is crucial, but the ability to listen to personal voice messages “can provide a completely different kind of comfort.” One of the most unexpected gifts for Damiana in building LegacyPath has been a new perspective on gratitude. Like many, gratitude for her meant appreciating the things she had in the present. While that remains “incredibly important,” she now sees gratitude a little differently. “There’s another expression of gratitude: taking care of what we’ve been given and making things easier for the people we love.” CONTINUED >

The idea of pre-planning can be scary, but with the right mindset and the people we love in mind, the practice can become an act of love. “My hope is that people don’t open the app and think about dying. I hope they open it and think about living intentionally and making things easier for the people they love.”

Military Discipline, CommunityCentered Care BRIDGING LESSONS FROM SERVICE TO LOCAL ORTHOPEDIC MEDICINE
As November arrives, our community naturally turns its focus toward gratitude, honoring both the blessings of family and the sacrifices of our nation’s military service members. For Dr. Brian Carr, founder of Las Vegas Concierge Orthopedics, this season offers an opportunity to reflect on service, sacrifice, and the core values that guide his practice. Having served as a physician in the armed forces, Dr. Carr brings a sense of duty, discipline, and patient-first care to the Las Vegas community. For Dr. Carr, military medicine provided invaluable insights into the patient experience. Those lessons directly shaped his clinical approach and personal philosophy. In large medical systems, patients often face administrative hurdles that can delay care. Dr. Carr recognized early on that eliminating these barriers required a simpler, more direct approach. “In military medicine it is very common for patients to get lost in the system during the referral process and their surgical recovery due to the complicated administrative military design,” explains Dr. Carr. “I discovered early that good direct communication with my patients helped to make sure they got what they needed when they needed it. The easiest method for this was to make sure my patients could always reach me on my cell. Good communication and physician availability improves patient satisfaction as well as outcomes. I have continued this approach into my private practice career.”

That focus on accessibility forms the backbone of Las Vegas Concierge Orthopedics. The practice offers a comprehensive range of surgical and nonsurgical care centered around a distinct philosophy: Concierge-style service without the concierge price. Every patient receives personalized, responsive attention without added membership fees. Dr. Carr’s time in the service also instilled a sharp focus on prompt treatment and efficiency. When a neighbor, worker, or athlete suffers an acute injury, waiting weeks for an appointment can prolong pain. The discipline developed during his military career drives his commitment to offer timely, dependable care. When asked about his most valuable lesson from his time in service, Dr. Carr notes, “the discipline to always help as many patients as I can as efficiently as I can. Patients with acute injuries need to be seen quickly so we can help with their pain. Patients need to recover quickly so they can get back to their work and other daily activities. We routinely see same day and next day appointments to help get them better as quickly as possible.” That passion for serving others—whether in uniform or in private practice—is rooted in gratitude. As the holiday season brings the community together, Dr. Carr’s gratitude extends back the men and women who share his background in service. “I would like to thank my brothers and sisters in arms for their service to this nation and wish them safe return to their families from all over the world,” shares Dr. Carr. “I am grateful for the service members that have all signed a blank check, up to including their lives while defending this country.”

Tips on meal prepping for less stress Let’s face it: hosting Thanksgiving dinner can be stressful. To make this year’s Thanksgiving meal easier and more enjoyable, consider the following timeline of tips.
ARTICLE BY ALISON STANTON
2 WEEKS BEFORE Create Your Thanksgiving Menu • Print out the recipes you plan to use – this will easier than constantly tapping your phone to prevent the screen from going dark. • Using your menu and printed out recipes as a guide, compose a complete shopping list. • Double check your supply of herbs and spices to see what you have on hand. • Shop for all non-perishable and frozen food items. Basically, if it doesn’t need to be stored in the fridge, or if it doesn’t have a short shelf life, it’s going in the cart. • Plan three easy and tasty dinners for the days leading up to Thanksgiving and purchase those ingredients during your shopping trip. Or plan at least one night of takeout.
4-5 DAYS BEFORE Clean & Organize, Buy Fresh Groceries • Clean your home completely. Then, as the big day approaches, you can touch up as needed. • Finish your grocery shopping for fresh vegetables like potatoes, onions and carrots and other items not purchased earlier. • Go through your fridge and toss any old, expired condiments, leftovers and mysterious food items that no one is eating.
2-3 DAYS BEFORE Prep Meals & Set the Table • Wash and chop all veggies and place the prepped produce into plastic baggies or airtight food storage containers. If some recipes call for “minced onion” and others require “chopped onion,” label the bags accordingly. • Set the table, and include the empty serving dishes. This will help you figure out ahead of time where the larger dishes can go. Add Post-It notes to the empty dishes to remind you what will go in what. Use a clean sheet to cover everything and keep it all dust-free. • Gather all needed serving spoons and other serving pieces. • Pre-measure herbs and spices for your recipes and store them in labeled small plastic bags with the name of the dish they are for and what’s in the baggies. You can also do the same for any flour, sugar or other non-perishable ingredients you’ll use in your dishes.
1 DAY BEFORE Tidy, Prepare Dishes & Drinks • Do a quick clean and tidy around the home; for instance, run the vacuum. • If you haven’t already done so, bake your pies, or, at the very least, prepare your pie dough. • Make the mashed potatoes. Bonus tip: on Thanksgiving, put the potatoes into a slow cooker and heat them up using the “warm” setting. • Prepare the gravy. If you have a second slow cooker, it too can be warmed up this way on Thanksgiving. This will also help free up pots, pans and burners on the stove! • Set up a separate drink station where guests can help themselves or someone can serve them away from the kitchen. Stock it with glasses of different sizes, napkins, bottle and can openers and straws.

WHERE COMMUNITY is more THAN A core value Nevada State Bank employees support financial education, volunteer initiatives, and community programs statewide ARTICLE BY STEPHEN WILL PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF NEVADA STATE BANK Nevada has long been shaped by residents who invest their time and energy in the places where they live and work. From rural towns to rapidly growing urban neighborhoods, that tradition remains visible across the Silver State. For Nevada State Bank, community involvement has been part of its story since the bank opened its first branch in downtown Las Vegas in 1959. Today, the bank operates 43 branches across more than two dozen Nevada communities. While banking services remain its primary focus, Nevada State Bank is also involved in financial education initiatives, volunteer activities, and nonprofit programs throughout the state. Employees volunteer with organizations, support donation drives, and participate in financial education programs that reach students, families, and community groups. In 2025, more than 190 Nevada State Bank employees contributed more than 3,300 volunteer hours, while the bank invested more than $650,000 in Nevada communities through charitable contributions, grants, sponsorships, and community programs. According to Terry Shirey, president and CEO of Nevada State Bank, many of the organization’s volunteer and outreach efforts begin with employees who are committed to the places they call home. “As an organization, we’re committed to supporting communities across Nevada, but it’s our colleagues who make the difference,” Terry said. “From cleaning up Red Rock to collecting canned food, they look for ways to get involved and make a positive impact.” Many of those efforts are coordinated through employee-led groups that organize volunteer opportunities and fundraising

campaigns. One longstanding example is the bank’s support of the Children’s Heart Foundation, including fundraising and participation in the organization’s Walk with the Heart of a Child event. Another example is Nevada State Bank’s support of Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada’s JA Inspiration Center. Opened in 2024, the 40,000-square-foot facility houses JA BizTown and JA Finance Park, immersive learning environments where students explore entrepreneurship, workforce readiness, and personal finance through hands-on experiences. At JA Finance Park, students apply personal finance concepts through simulations that connect education, career choices, income, and lifestyle decisions. Nevada State Bank maintains a storefront within the facility, where employees regularly volunteer and interact with students as they work through realworld financial scenarios. Beyond the JA Inspiration Center, employees volunteer throughout the year to help students build practical financial knowledge and understand how financial decisions connect to everyday life. In addition to supporting financial education programs, employees participate in volunteer opportunities with organizations serving a wide range of community needs. Among those opportunities are Green Our Planet’s Giant Student Farmers Markets, where students sell produce and products developed through their school garden programs while gaining entrepreneurial skills. Nevada State Bank volunteers assist at the events, helping students interact with customers, handle transactions, and bring their products to market. The bank’s branch network also plays a role in community service. Throughout the year, Nevada State Bank locations serve as collection sites for donation drives that support local families and students. Branches have collected donations for Communities In Schools’ Fill the Bus school supply campaign and the annual 98.5 KLUC Toy Drive, with donations distributed to local children and families through HELP of Southern Nevada. “Having branches throughout Nevada gives us an opportunity to connect people with causes that are important in their communities,” Terry said. On Dec. 9, Nevada State Bank will celebrate its 67th anniversary. The bank opened with a single branch in downtown Las Vegas in 1959, long before Nevada’s population and economy grew to transform the state. While much has changed over the past six decades, employee volunteerism, financial education, and local philanthropy remain a consistent part of the organization’s presence across Nevada. Whether it’s volunteering, supporting a school supply drive, helping at a student farmers market, or collecting holiday donations, these efforts extend Nevada State Bank’s presence beyond traditional banking services. Taken together, they illustrate how the organization engages with communities and reflect a longstanding appreciation for the people, organizations, and neighborhoods that make Nevada feel like home.

HONOR, SERVICE, LEGACY LONGTIME HENDERSON PHOTOGRAPHER CAPTURES 250 LOCAL HEROES, PRESERVING THE HEART AND SOUL OF THEIR MILITARY SACRIFICE FOREVER ARTICLE BY VIVIAN GREGGORY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKEL CONRAD

When Mikel Conrad watched his uncle break down in tears after putting on a replica Army jacket for his 80th birthday, he saw far more than a piece of fabric. He saw decades of unspoken pride, deep-rooted friendships, and a chapter of youth that time could never erase. It was a pivotal moment for the longtime Henderson photographer: the realization that the living histories walking among us can slip away quietly if we don’t take the time to preserve them. That single moment fueled a passion project that quickly grew into a Valley-wide mission. Timed alongside America’s 250th anniversary, Mikel set out to look past ranks and branch insignias, focusing instead on the human spirit behind the uniform. Armed with his camera and an open heart, the owner of Mikel’s Photography & Design sat face-to-face with local heroes— from Omaha Beach D-Day veteran Onofrio “Nono” Zicari to tireless advocates with Honor Flight Southern Nevada. What started as an effort to capture portraits evolved into “250 Faces of Service & Sacrifice,” an emotionally charged collection that ultimately grew to 287 stories, a traveling exhibition, and a commemorative book. Sitting with these men and women, Mikel witnessed a remarkable, shared humility: individuals who lived through extraordinary history yet insisted they were “just doing a job.” As you look at these powerful faces, Mikel’s hope is that gratitude gives way to action. These aren’t just striking portraits; they are our neighbors, grandfathers, mothers, and friends whose sacrifices shaped our community, reminding us to learn from them, cherish their journeys, and capture their living histories today. Let their eyes remind us to ask our own loved ones the hard questions, to listen closely, and to write down their stories—because while every photograph eventually becomes history, the soul of the story depends on us. OPPOSITES ATTRACT A wine and food pairing guests will be thankful for: Sauternes and Stilton blue cheese
ARTICLE BY EVE BUSHMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY ED BUSHMAN
This wine writer, judge, and educator has a favorite wine and food pairing for the holidays that may surprise you: a sweet dessert wine like a golden French Sauternes paired with Stilton blue cheese. Let me explain why this pairing might just amaze your guests this festive season. The first time it was served to me was in a dessert wine pairing class. I couldn’t stomach the sweet tarts and cakes initially paired with the sweet wine, and when it came time to pair the same wine with a very strong cheese, I scoffed at that as well. I knew wine and food pairings generally took one of two approaches: complementing flavors, such as sweet with sweet, or contrasting ones.

day to say what a hit it was with the guests, many of whom were experiencing their first “aha!” moment. This unique and surprising pairing can be served as an appetizer or dessert, and it always seems to make holiday festivities more fun. One extra expert tip for you: If you want to plan a special holiday dinner and you really want to make sure your wine—or any beverage—is paired properly, invest in the book “What to Drink With What You Eat” by Andrew Dornenburg and Karen A. Page. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve flipped through that book while holiday meal planning.
Eve serving April Slavis and Jennifer Mantell
When I put a little taste of Stilton cheese on my tongue and washed the wine over it, a miraculous thing happened—that thing you want to happen in a great pairing: both the wine and the cheese changed. The nuttiness of the cheese came out, and the honey in the sweet wine blossomed. I actually reached over to some of the empty place settings and took all the cheese for myself. It was like having a solo holiday party that left me both grateful and thankful. I’ve shared this pairing with dozens of people. One was a state senator who asked for a unique dessert to bring to Thanksgiving dinner for a small group. I told him to bring a split (half bottle) of Sauternes or any white dessert wine and a wedge of blue cheese to watch what happens. He messaged me the very next

GIVING TOGETHER A Community That Shows Up
Every year, City Lifestyle sends checks to hundreds of families in need across the country through our annual Giving Campaign and our nonprofit arm, Kingdom Building Foundation. But none of it would be possible without you. We can only help the people we know about, and

that’s where our readers come in. If you know someone quietly struggling, whether it’s a single parent, a senior citizen, or a family facing something they never saw coming, we want to hear their story. Nominations are what make this whole campaign possible.
We provided a chair lift for a teenager paralyzed in a gymnastics accident so she could move freely through her own home again. We helped a child who lost an eye to cancer get the prosthetic because insurance wouldn’t cover it. We covered dental work for a man who needed his smile back just to walk into a job interview. We got heat turned back on for a family who had spent part of the winter without it. We helped a family keep up with bills while a husband and father fought pancreatic cancer, and we helped another family cover medical expenses after the unimaginable loss of a child. These are just a few examples of some of the hundreds of individuals that have been helped through nominations from readers like you. None of it happens without someone noticing first and speaking up. "We don't just send checks," says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle.
“We send a message: You are seen, you are loved, and you are not forgotten.” Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond the holiday season. "This is about community," Matthew says. "We believe we've been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing." Often, the person making the nomination gets just as much out of the experience as the recipient. There's something powerful about being part of the reason someone else's burden got lighter, especially when that need might have otherwise gone unnoticed. The campaign is completely confidential. No names are ever shared or publicized, and nominating someone is as simple as telling us their story. We are looking for those in our communities who fall between the cracks of getting help, and together as a community, we can meet those needs.
Nominations open November 1st and close December 3rd. To nominate someone in your community, follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram and find the form in our bio, or visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org.
This season, giving starts with you. Let's do it together. Nominate someone in need today.
