LIFESTYLE LETTER
Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season! As we head into the new year, instead of making a long list of resolutions, I’ve chosen to focus on living with intention in 2026. It’s a big year for this publisher. As I cross into a new decade and celebrate the big 4-0, I’m also stepping into an exciting year of growth. I’m honored to be part of the Leadership Henderson Class of 2026 through the Henderson Chamber of Commerce, and I’m entering my third year as publisher of this magazine, an honor that continues to bring me immense joy. The new year carries a sense of possibility—an air of “anything is possible”—and offers a chance to reflect on the year gone by. Each new year is like opening a fresh page with opportunities to grow, explore, and create the life you want. It’s a chance to start anew, embrace change, and set intentions that align with your goals. This may sound cheesy, but I start each new year by writing out my goals for the year ahead; it’s helped me stay on track, remind myself of my priorities when life gets hairy, and stay grounded throughout the year. Whatever your goals are this year, I hope they bring health, prosperity, peace and joy! We’re beginning 2026 by prioritizing our health and well-being as the foundation for living our best life. In this issue, learn about how to get started and get the most out of your workout at Row House. We meet Dr. Brian Mears of Alleviant Integrated Mental Health, whose life was changed forever by a phone call and now is trailblazing a new approach to mental health. And we go behind the scenes at The Tox Henderson, one of the newest ways to relax and detox with lymphatic drainage. We hope this issue inspires you to live your healthiest, happiest life, and that 2026 brings you everything you wish for.

A MIND FOR HEALING 18
M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | H E ALT H + WE LLN E SS
When Brian Mears got the phone call that would change his life forever, he wasn’t thinking about opening a mental health clinic. He wasn’t thinking about brain scans, psychology, or trauma-informed care. He was thinking about how to help seven children, his nieces and nephews, who had nowhere else to go. “They were living in a van in a Las Vegas parking lot,” Brian recalls. “Their mother struggled with addiction, and one of the older girls called and left a voicemail for my wife that simply said, ‘Can you help?’” Within 24 hours, Brian had flown all seven children, from a 2-year-old toddler to a newly turned 18-year-old, across the country to Florida. Overnight, he and his wife went from a quiet, career-driven couple to parents of seven. “That was our introduction to mental health,” he says. “And we had no idea what we were getting into.”

Before that life-altering call, Brian had built an impressive career in anesthesia. He was a respected clinician, educator, and leader, directing programs across hospitals, teaching, and even testifying before congressional healthcare committees. “I was on track to lead that profession,” he says. “I had a great life, a great career. But then life threw me a curveball.” What followed was chaos and confusion. The newly adopted children arrived carrying deep emotional scars. “We saw fighting, cursing, and aggression. The 3-year-old couldn’t make eye contact,” Brian recalls. “We thought he might be on the spectrum. It was heartbreaking.” As a medical professional, Brian immediately sought psychiatric help, but quickly hit a wall. “When I asked my colleagues who they would trust for mental health care, nobody had an answer,” he says. “It shocked me. How could a system be so disconnected? How could we not know who was good in this profession?” The experience exposed a gap in the healthcare system that Brian couldn’t ignore. “We went to primary care, like most Americans
20

do,” he says. “But all we found was symptom management pills for every problem. I knew that wasn’t a real solution.” Armed with his background in anesthesia, where data, precision, and measurable outcomes drive every decision, Brian began exploring how those same principles could be applied to psychiatry. “In anesthesia, everything is objective. You have monitors, numbers, and data. In psychiatry, almost everything is subjective,” he explains. “You ask people how they feel, and you adjust based on their answers. But I believed we could do better.” That belief became the foundation of Alleviant Integrated Mental Health (alleviant.com), the clinic Brian launched in Arkansas in 2018. His mission: to merge compassion and data into a new model of care he calls objective psychiatry. This model not only demystifies mental health care but also builds trust through transparency. “Our goal is to treat root causes, not just symptoms,” he emphasizes. “That’s how real healing begins.” Today, Alleviant has become a household name in Brian’s home state of Arkansas. Its model, focused on integrated, objective, and compassionate care, has set a new standard in the industry. And most recently, Brian turned his sights to Nevada. The Henderson clinic opened this past summer, and another clinic is set to open in Summerlin this month. “Nevada ranked last in the nation for mental health access,” Brian says. “That’s why we had to come here.” The Las Vegas Valley, where Brian has strong personal and professional ties, faces unique challenges. “Addiction rates are high and not just drugs, but gambling and technology addictions,” he explains. “People often lose their sense of purpose. When that happens, anxiety, depression, and substance use follow.” Beyond expanding clinics, Brian has a broader goal: education. “The best mental health care is prevention,” he says. “If we can
teach families how to build resilience early on, we can reduce the need for treatment later.” On Alleviant’s website, families can find free digital media plans designed to help parents manage screen time and encourage meaningful connections. “We have to go back to the dinner table,” Brian says. “Talk to each other. Look each other in the eyes. Stop letting meaningless noise fill your brain. Purposeful living. That’s where mental wellness begins.” He also believes that the pandemic shifted public perception of mental health for the better. “COVID destigmatized it,” he says. “We all experienced anxiety, isolation, and uncertainty. It made us realize that mental health is universal. It’s brain health.” Brian’s roadmap is ambitious. Within the next year, Alleviant plans to expand into six additional states. “There’s no end to the need,” he says. “Conditions like anxiety, depression, ADHD, and autism are on the rise. We’re committed to meeting that need, community by community.”
But despite the growth, his focus remains personal. “I started this journey because my family needed help and couldn’t find it,” he reflects. “Now I’m building the kind of care we wished existed back then.” His advice to anyone struggling? “Don’t wait until your brain is broken. If you’re dealing with anxiety, depression, or insomnia, get care now. It only gets worse if you ignore it.” Today, Brian and his wife live with their two youngest children, now teenagers. (The older kids are out of the house and thriving!) “I tell people, stop putting your kids in your 401(k) plan, put them in ‘today’s plan’,” he says, smiling. “Be a parent who’s present now. Be a spouse who’s present now. The best gift you can give your family is your time and your attention.” For Brian Mears, that lesson, born from one desperate voicemail in a Las Vegas parking lot has become a life’s calling: Bringing clarity, compassion, and care to the most complex organ of all ... the human mind.

ROW your way to BETTER HEALTH How Row House Henderson makes getting started with indoor rowing simple, fun, and effective ARTICLE BY ALEXANDER FRASER PHOTOGRAPHY BY DIEGO CALINAWAN-AMAROSA
A new year brings new routines, and January is all about wellness resets. Indoor rowing stands out as a workout that offers not just full-body fitness, but a strong sense of community and connection. Henderson’s own Row House Henderson, owned and operated by Reble and David Houten, is designed to introduce residents to the multi-benefit world of rowing while offering a uniquely supportive, goal-driven environment. Often celebrated by trainers and health professionals, rowing is one of the most effective full-body exercises and it’s surprisingly accessible to nearly anyone, regardless of age or experience. “Rowing is unique because it utilizes 87% of your muscles and is low impact,” says Reble. “It’s 60% legs, 30% core and 10% arms, meaning every part of your body gets activated—without pounding your joints.” The rower (erg) has an effort-based mechanism, which means resistance is generated by the user’s own energy. “This makes it easy for beginners; the machine responds to the individual, so you can join a class and get stronger at your own pace,” adds David. Scientific studies show that indoor rowing, performed three to five times a week for several weeks, can decrease overall body fat by 4 to 16%, reduce LDL cholesterol, and noticeably improve joint strength and flexibility. In just six weeks, participants experienced lower blood pressure and increased trunk flexion, a measure of core mobility. The workout also boosts cardiovascular endurance, supports bone density, and improves heart health by increasing good cholesterol over time. For first-timers, Row House Henderson goes above and beyond to provide a welcoming and expert-led introduction. Each guest

is greeted by staff who ask about their goals, guide them through the studio, and introduce them to their coach. “No rowing experience is needed. The most important part of the beginner’s journey is feeling supported and welcome—we do that from the minute you walk in the door,” says Reble. Before class starts, new members get one-on-one instruction on form and have a chance to try a few strokes. Community is at the heart of the experience as well. New rowers are introduced to others in the studio, helping them feel welcomed from the start. CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/H E N D E R S O N

What to wear and bring? The studio recommends comfortable workout clothes, athletic shoes, and a water bottle (there’s FloWater onsite for easy refills). Row House Henderson provides a clean towel for every session. Coaches are ready to modify floor work and tailor pacing for both beginners and seasoned athletes, ensuring workouts are safe, effective, and empowering for everyone. Results come quickly for new rowers: “You’ll notice heart-health benefits, muscle toning, and often weight loss in just a couple of weeks,” David explains. The studio has a motivational culture, celebrating milestones such as 50,000, 250,000, and even up to a million meters rowed. These achievements are recognized in class, on social media, and with special Row House gifts. Members can also look forward to themed classes (think glow and movie rows), nutrition challenges, and “power hours,” each designed to support growth and keep exercise fun. According to studies, sticking with rowing can also improve reaction times, mental health and endurance over time, making it ideal for people who want holistic gains from exercise. Row House Henderson’s story is as inspiring as its workouts. Both owners began as members at another Row House location, falling in love with rowing before deciding to change careers and bring the concept to Henderson. “We truly love this studio, and you’ll see us rowing alongside our amazing crew,” says Reble. That sense of camaraderie echoes throughout every class, where encouragement and teamwork are prioritized just as much as sweat and effort. If you’re hesitating to try something new, Row House Henderson makes it easy with a free first class, expert coaching, and a community atmosphere backed by evidence-based training that supports overall wellness. Whether your goals involve weight loss, strength building, better heart health or simply finding a fitness routine you can love, indoor rowing could be the solution for 2026.

Inside the lymphatic sculpting method redefining wellness The Master Tox treatment, designed to decrease bloating & water retention
HENDERSON’S DETOX SECR ET: January is the month we collectively hit reset. As the holiday rush fades, we ease back into routines that restore our energy, strengthen our immunity, and realign the delicate balance between our physical and mental well-being. One therapy is emerging as Henderson’s go-to way to jumpstart a healthier new year: lymphatic drainage.
28
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | H E ALT H + WE LLN E SS
The Sculpting Facial, recommended for congestion and seasonal allergies especially this time of year
Why the Lymphatic System is Crucial The lymphatic system is responsible for moving fluid, filtering waste, and supporting immunity. As a key detox system in our bodies, it is an often overlooked aspect for health that plays a pivotal role in overall well-being. Movement, hydration, and manual stimulation are what keep lymph flowing. When it stagnates, it often shows up as bloating, puffiness, low energy, and slowed digestion. To revitalize and combat bloating, Henderson residents are turning to The Tox, a wellness studio that specializes in hands-on lymphatic drainage tailored to the vitality needs of each client. Bailie Sloan, owner of The Tox Henderson, emphasizes the importance of stimulating your lymphatic system, especially during the winter months when the desert gets chillier and sunlight exposure decreases. “There’s more stress, less sunlight, comfort foods, holiday celebrations, it adds up. Regular lymphatic work helps mitigate those negative effects and keeps you feeling lighter and more energized.” Inside The Tox Technique The Tox Technique is entirely hands-on. Designed to stimulate lymphatic flow, reduce fluid retention, and deliver immediate visible contouring. One of the biggest misconceptions about lymphatic drainage and The Tox Technique is that it isn’t a massage, but rather a treatment that delivers immediate physical contouring alongside lymphatic drainage benefits. “It feels incredible and relaxing while you’re on the table, but the biggest difference is what you see after,” Bailie explains. “Most women notice their waistline, love handles, and midsection look tighter with
less bloating and water retention. It’s really a ‘look good and feel good’ treatment.” Master Tox: Sculpting, Debloating, and A Natural Energy Boost The studio’s signature Master Tox session is a local favorite. Clients often notice visible changes in their midsection and face, thanks to the studio’s paired Sculpting Facial, which is designed to target lymph nodes in the cheeks, jawline and neck. Beyond aesthetics, many clients report a noticeably positive shift in how they feel after the treatment. “Some people get off the table with a burst of energy, like they could run a marathon,” Bailie says. “Others feel calm, relaxed, even euphoric.” Prolonging Results and What First Timers Can Expect Hydration is key, and not just the morning of. “Come hydrated, but don’t eat or drink anything 30 minutes before your treatment,” Bailie recommends. Inside The Tox Henderson, the environment is upbeat, communal, and energizing, differing from a typical dimmed spa setting. “Your lymphatic system stays activated for 72 hours after a session, so what you do afterward, hydration, movement, avoiding processed foods, really determines how dramatically your results last.” There’s no one magic thing that offsets an unhealthy lifestyle. But when lymphatic work is part of your wellness routine, the results last. Disclaimer: The lymphatic massage services offered by The Tox are intended to support overall wellness and are not a substitute for medical care. Practitioners do not diagnose, prescribe, or treat any physical or mental illness, and nothing said in the course of a session should be construed as such medical advice. Clients are encouraged to consult their healthcare provider for any health concerns or before starting any new wellness regimen. License #2025333463 JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . S E R V ING OUR K ID S FIGHTING CHILD HUNGER BY HELPING KIDS THRIVE WITH RELIABLE NUTRITION
ARTICLE BY ELAINE AND SCOTT HARRIS PHOTOGRAPHY BY SERVING OUR KIDS FOUNDATION

K I D S M E N U | L I FE + C ULT U RE
When funding for feeding Southern Nevada’s most vulnerable children was halted, the strain was felt across the valley. In the absence of dependable support, Serving Our Kids Foundation (servingourkids.org) stepped up to help fill the gap for food-insecure families, making a real difference in the lives of thousands. Founded in 2013, Serving Our Kids Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit devoted to ensuring children can dream about the future, not just about food. “Hungry kids don’t dream of the future. They dream of food. We’re feeding
their dreams,” affirms CEO Laurie Tanakaya. The foundation’s regular meal bag program delivers hope and sustenance to at-risk youth through a broad coalition of donors, advocates, and volunteers. Every week, volunteers make sure no child has to go without food over the weekend. “We are very fortunate to have a large, dedicated group of volunteers helping ‘Serving Our Kids.’ Each week we pack and deliver weekend meal bags to 100 Clark County, K-8th grade schools. Funding is critical to our mission,” Laurie says, emphasizing the necessity of ongoing community support. The impact of stable meals is profound. Nutritious food is the foundation of children’s mental focus, academic growth, and social development. Numerous studies show that kids with reliable access to healthy meals attend school more often, participate more fully, and perform better in class. When hunger is removed from the equation, children are better able to learn, overcome challenges, and thrive, both in and out of school. As the nonprofit says, “Children are the center of our universe. And we value the health, well-being and future of every child. As crusaders in the never-ending battle against child hunger, our values help give us the strength to keep fighting, to keep driving forward and serving more kids.” When school is out, access to reliable meals disappears, putting many children at risk of hunger. “Summertime, when school is not in session, is a challenge. During the year we partner directly with the schools and their administration. Long term, we hope to develop partnerships that can help with a summertime solution,” Laurie explains.
Volunteers are still the backbone of Serving Our Kids. Locals can register online to help assemble bags at the warehouse on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Skilled professionals in areas like marketing or technical trades are also encouraged to assist with community events. David Archer, Executive Director, oversees daily operations and seeks new partnerships to keep the program thriving. The need remains urgent. Each day, more than 100,000 children in Clark County face food insecurity. While school meal programs offer relief during the week, few extend help to weekends, making Serving Our Kids critical to bridge that gap. Laurie’s conviction carries forward: “I am proud to serve as a full-time volunteer CEO. One child at a time; we will take steps to end child hunger in our community.” For many families, the foundation is more than a food source, it is a promise of a brighter future. As Southern Nevada continues to face possible funding delays and uncertainty, Serving Our Kids Foundation proves that local action, compassion, and partnership can help protect children’s health and well-being, one meal at a time.

HEALTHY START GRANOLA BARS ARTICLE BY SIENNA SINCLAIR
January always feels like a clean slate: a time when balance, energy, and wholesome habits come back into focus. Instead of reaching for store-bought snacks with extra sugar or preservatives, start fresh with a batch of homemade granola bars. These raw vegan Superfood Granola Bars are just the thing to keep you nourished through busy mornings, mid-day cravings, or post-workout hunger. Made with natural sweetness and rich texture from oats, dates, dried fruit, and seeds, they’re easy to customize and even easier to love. Form them into compact squares or roll them into bite-sized energy balls for an on-the-go treat that’s full of flavor and purpose.

Su p e rfo o d G ra n ol a B a r s Ingredients • 1 cup rolled oats • 1 cup pitted Medjool dates (about 10–12), softened in warm water • 1/3 cup sliced almonds • 1/3 cup raw pumpkin seeds • 1/3 cup dried cranberries • 2 tablespoons chia seeds • 2 tablespoons ground flax seeds • 2 tablespoons almond butter or cashew butter • 2 tablespoons maple syrup or raw agave nectar • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • Pinch of sea salt • Optional: 1 tablespoon finely grated orange peel or 1/4 cup chopped dried apricots for a citrus or tangy twist Directions 1. Line an 8x8-inch baking dish with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on two sides for easy removal. 2. In a food processor, pulse oats, dates, almond butter, maple syrup, vanilla, and salt until the mixture clumps together but still has some texture. It should hold when pressed between your fingers. 3. Add almonds, pumpkin seeds, cranberries, chia, flax seeds, and optional orange peel or apricot pieces. Pulse a few more times to combine while keeping visible bits of nuts and fruit. 4. Transfer the mixture to the prepared dish and press it evenly into the corners using the back of a spatula. For a firmer texture, place the pan in the fridge for 1–2 hours. 5. Lift out the chilled mixture using the parchment overhang and slice it into bars or squares. 6. For granola energy balls, roll tablespoon-sized portions between your palms into compact rounds. Chill until firm.
“Packed with oats, dates, and superfood seeds, these raw vegan bars deliver pure, lasting energy—perfect for powering busy mornings or healthy snacking.”
Store your freshly made granola snacks in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to a week, or freeze for longer freshness. They make an energizing breakfast companion or afternoon pick-meup—a wholesome habit you’ll actually want to keep beyond January.

It’s been said that “life is just a bowl of cherries,” and it just so happens that cherries might improve your life. This nutrient-dense, heart-healthy fruit may lower blood pressure and cholesterol, combat inflammation, help the body manage stress, speed recovery after exercise, balance your mood and help you sleep. To say it is a superfood may be an understatement. So it’s only fitting that we include a mocktail recipe with cherries as the star ingredient this month. Let’s drink to health, wellness and a wonderful year ahead! Cheers!
