Savor a variety of New York tastes with a twist at Bodega Bagel

Welcome to the Neighborhood ENJOY A TASTE OF NEW YORK IN HENDERSON AT SONIA EL-NAWAL’S BODEGA BAGEL After serving the northwest Las Vegas community from 2018 until 2021 at her Desert Shores eatery, Rooster Boy Cafe, Armenian-Lebanese chef Sonia El-Nawal has finally brought her celebrated New York-inspired breakfast and lunch cuisine to Henderson with Bodega Bagel. A love letter to the city El-Nawal studied cooking in, Bodega Bagel originally operated as a pop-up at Vegas Test Kitchen in downtown Las Vegas before opening a permanent location at the corner of Eastern and St. Rose. While El-Nawal noted that Rooster Boy Cafe fans may notice some menu similarities, Bodega Bagel isn’t just the same restaurant with a different name. “Fans will find my Shakshuka (eggs baked in a spicy tomato sauce), daily house-made pastries, and a few other Chef Sonia

staples, but Bodega Bagel has its own energy and vibe,” El-Nawal stated. “I tried to keep the identities very separate, as I didn’t want to do the same thing.” In addition to fresh-made artisan bagels and pastries that guests can enjoy to go, Bodega Bagel offers a mouthwatering menu of deli and bagel sandwiches, breakfast dishes, soups, and salads that diners can savor inside the eatery while admiring black-and-white photos from legendary New York City photographer Weegee. Menu highlights include the Hudson River — an open-faced bagel sandwich topped with whitefish salad, tobiko wasabi, scallions, and microgreens — and the Latke. “We offer very different fare from the usual breakfast spots,” El-Nawal concluded. “We want to give the neighborhood a local artisanal breakfast and lunch spot.”

1 20-oz. can of crushed tomatoes ½ white onion, chopped 2 garlic cloves, chopped 3 strands of scallion, chopped + additional for garnish • ¼ bunch of cilantro, finely chopped + additional for garnish • 2 tbsp. harissa paste • 1 serrano chili, chopped without the seeds

• 1 jalapeño pepper, chopped without the seeds • 1 tsp. salt • 1 tbsp. cumin • ¼ cup of olive oil • ½ cup of water • Number of eggs of choice • Maldon Salt to taste • Aleppo pepper or red pepper flakes to taste

D i re ct i on s: 1. In a large pot, sauté onion, garlic, scallion, cilantro, chili, and jalapeño pepper with olive oil until soft. Hudson River

2. Add in crushed tomatoes, harissa, cumin, salt, and water. 3. Simmer on low to medium heat for 1 hour. 4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

6. Crack eggs directly into sauce. 7. Place pan in oven and bake until egg whites are cooked through. Check after 10 minutes. 8. Remove from oven and plate in shallow bowl or serving dish. 9. Garnish with Maldon Salt, Aleppo pepper, cilantro, and scallion.

Living For the managing owner/director of the lifestyle concept retail store, Wildseed Living, Edna Narrido Luer says Las Vegas has a way of surprising you. “I actually never thought I would ever live here,” said Edna, who had previously called Chicago and Los Angeles home. “But this city has changed over the years. It has definitely upgraded itself in a way I had never imagined.” The Filipino native who opened Wildseed Living in the heart of Town Square Las Vegas in the summer of 2021 said her store, in a way, represents what Las Vegas is now: A melting pot of cultural experiences from not just across the country but around the world. “When people come into my store, they often say they have never seen a place like this. It’s just beautiful,” said Edna. “It’s interesting because, at first, I thought I wasn’t going to fit into this town. I felt like maybe I would be an outcast in some way and that I wasn’t going to do well as a business. But so far, it’s been really great.” CONTINUED >

When you step inside Wildseed Living, you do feel like you are entering an experience curated to resemble places and people that have become a part of Edna's life story. It's filled with distinctive furniture and decor, one-of-a-kind gift items, jewelry, clothing, and wellness and skincare brands. Edna works with vendors, manufacturers, and designers from around the world, including Indonesia, the Philippines, China, India, and Thailand. She said the inspiration behind her current business began years ago while she was on a very different career path. “I am originally from the Philippines, but I came to the U.S. when I was 16,” said Edna. "I lived in Chicago in the 1970s and was exposed to all the fashion, design, and architecture the city could offer. Then I moved to Los Angeles and got into the medical field. I exported scientific equipment, minicomputers, and industrial instrumentation throughout Asia, Europe, and Australia. While I was overseas, I was exposed to these beautiful things. Before you knew it, I started collecting all these pieces, and they were all over my house and even in my backyard! I guess that’s when I knew I wanted to run it as my own business.” In the 90s, Edna opened “Out of Asia” in Los Angeles. This successful wholesale import company catered to boutiques, high-end stores, interior designers, hotels, and restaurants, as well as movies and TV shows in the entertainment industry. (Out of Asia was rated "Best in LA" for Asian furniture by Los Angeles Magazine). This was the time when she started traveling more to do product research while doing product designs and developments for her clients. Edna became known to all her clients for her connections with sources of distinctive and unique pieces from all around the world. Her work even expanded to Las Vegas before she moved here. She had worked with major hotels and casinos to beautify global tourist destinations from Mandalay Bay to the Tao Restaurant & Nightclub inside the Venetian. CONTINUED >

“When people come into my store, they often say they have never seen a place like this.” Right before the pandemic, Edna said she was done with the “congestion” of Southern California and decided to move to Las Vegas and open up Wildseed Living. “I love that since we opened, we have been able to offer many things for my clients, including home interior design services, staging, and furniture rentals." When it comes to design inspirations, Edna says she loves to Juxtapose the old and new. Her motto: Inspire with love, style, and grace." "I still like classic, but I always add an oomph to it - combining everything from European to Japanese to organic and earthy materials from all over the world.” Since its opening over a year ago, her Town Square concept store has become a place where her customers come to find unique pieces they can’t get anywhere else in town. Walking around the business, you can get a sense of the global adventures Narrido-Luer has been on throughout her life. “I bring to the U.S. all the natural and organic materials from all over Asia. I helped introduce Rattan and other natural fibers here to people on the West Coast.” Aside from home decor, Edna aims to share her love of fashion with her

customers, with everything from clothing to jewelry. The bright-colored clothing with exotic styles brightens her shop, and it’s clear she enjoys mixing the modern and vintage and everything in between. “I am definitely working with my clients to style them, and a lot of people in this town do come in, especially before they go to events and parties. We are really unique amongst the other stores here in Town Square. We even have had other business owners here in this complex stop by and get pieces from us.” She even just finished interior design for a client with a new home in MacDonald Highlands. As for the name “Wildseed,” Edna says that her life has inspired that word because she has tapped into so many different things in her life and career. That experience has taught her to always bring in all things that are interesting and share them with her community. “Las Vegas is definitely a special place to work because people come from everywhere, and my work allows me to provide them with inspirations and reminders of things they may be missing from where they come from.”

WHAT SERVICES DO YOU PROVIDE? Our specialty is maintenance, but we also fix broken-down cars. We always say: "We want to maintain your vehicle. And if it breaks down, we can fix it." Maintenance will always determine the extent of the repairs your vehicle will need. We offer premium oil and filter services, factory scheduled maintenance, brake system services and repairs, tire replacements, wheel balancing, battery and charging system repairs, shocks and strut replacements, diagnostics, A/C system services & repairs, and Tesla maintenance.

TELL US THE HISTORY OF PRECISION TUNE AUTO CARE. Precision Tune Auto Care started in the 1970s, offering quick oil changes and tune-ups. Las Vegas Center #039-11 opened in 2009. I am the current owner of the franchise, but I started as the Center Manager in April 2012. After a long and successful career as the manager, in 2020, I was given the opportunity to purchase the franchise alongside my wife, Vanessa. Since the purchase, we have fully upgraded the center in all aspects. We updated the interior design and continue to purchase the latest and best-in-class equipment to service all modern vehicles. We believe that quality is what matters — quality parts plus quality staff equals happy clients.

WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER AUTO CARE COMPANIES?

“Our staff is very friendly and polite. We try to ‘WOW’ all of our clients as soon as they walk through the door. Additionally, through our DVI, we can accurately show our clients exactly what is happening in their vehicles.”

Our oil and filter services are simply the BEST. Not only do we use high-quality oil and filters, but also, we perform a full Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI). This inspection is sent to clients via text or email. The report has high-quality pictures, notes, recommendations, and short informational videos. The report also categorizes the items in order of importance. Other shops claim to also do this, but NO ONE does it like we do. Our clients also have the option to message us at any time during the service with questions, process update requests, or with anything they may need to inform us about. Additionally, every full synthetic oil and filter service comes with a dashboard and center console cleaning, front floor mat vacuuming, and the client’s choice of air freshener. We want all vehicles to leave working well and for the customer to feel good.

WHAT ARE YOUR NEW CUSTOMERS MOST INTERESTED IN LEARNING ABOUT? Our clients are most interested in learning about two things. First is how to get the best fuel economy. In this case, we can help to see what’s going on, especially if a client has noticed a drop in their vehicle’s MPGs. The second is Tesla maintenance. [Yes, your Tesla requires some maintenance.] Some clients

are shocked to hear that their Tesla still requires brake fluid maintenance, cabin filter replacements, regular wheel alignments, brake system services (annual), and new tires (as needed).

WHAT ARE THE TOP THREE THINGS CAR OWNERS SHOULD DO TO PROTECT THE LONGEVITY OF THEIR VEHICLE? 1. Find a shop you trust. Find ONE. Don’t use three or four. Relying on multiple shops for repairs risks an issue becoming more complicated when trying to service your vehicle. It gets more expensive the more complicated it gets. 2. Don’t go to the "cheapest" place. We all like a good deal, but there is a reason why there are places still offering a $10.00 oil change. They use the cheapest oil and filters, which will end up costing you more in the long run. Those “deals” often lead you to save money now, only to have to pay double or sometimes triple later. 3. Invest in clean air and clean fuel. Your vehicle computer is constantly trying to adjust fuel and air. If the fuel is bad quality, it will affect the way the vehicle runs. If the air quality is bad, that will also affect the engine. The better the air and fuel, the better the vehicle will run. High-quality oil will lessen the heat and friction inside the motor, allowing it to not work as hard. Replace your air filter with every oil service and perform fuel system maintenance as needed.

HOW DO YOU BUILD TRUST WITH CUSTOMERS? Our staff is very friendly and polite. We try to “WOW” all of our clients as soon as they walk through the door. We embrace the most common service: the oil and filter service. Many shops dislike oil changes: they see them as a hassle. Not at Precision Tune Auto Care — we embrace everything we do. Not one item on the list of services that we do is more important than the other. The oil and filter clients are just as important as the brake service clients, and no matter what, we appreciate everyone that comes through our doors.

Creative Ways to Tell Your Child ‘I Love You’ Valentine’s Day is a perfect reason to show your child just how much he or she is loved. Try these creative ideas to show how much you care on Valentine’s Day and throughout the entire year.

EDIBLE IDEAS A heart a day. Add a heart-shaped candy to your child's lunch box every day of the school year. Be sure to stock up during after-Valentine's Day clearances so you stay supplied. Heart-shaped lunch. Use a large, heartshaped cookie cutter to make heart-shaped

sandwiches, toast, and other treats. Your kids will love the shape and that you've eliminated the crust. A cupful of love. Give your child a “World’s Greatest Son/Daughter” or “I Love You” cup. Then use it whenever you serve hot cocoa or graham crackers and milk. Do lunch. Pick up your child from school for a surprise lunch date. Hit your child's favorite fast-food joint, go on a picnic, or have lunch together in the school cafeteria. (If you choose the latter, make sure your child won't mind or be embarrassed.)

THE WRITTEN WORD A poet and didn't know it. You don't have to be a poet to write a poem for your child. If poetry isn't your thing, look up simple children's rhymes. Then make revisions, especially for your child. Poems can be serious or fun, but either way, your child will love them. A valentine's welcome. Welcome your child home from school with a valentine's banner across your front porch or entryway. Add cute sayings that remind your child why he’s the greatest son. Create fun sentences by clipping words from magazine ads and adding some valentine's doodles. Snail mail surprise. Kids love to get mail, so why not send your child a card, letter, or postcard? Don’t forget to let your child check the mail to discover the greeting. Say it with email. Send your child an email with a link to a fun website or a funny animated e-greeting. With the abundance of entertaining websites and free e-greetings, you can send your child something new every day of the year. Scrabble greetings. Wish your child a “Happy Valentine’s Day,” congratulate him on a great report card, or show how much you appreciate your child's help with a scrabble message. For younger readers, spell out a simple phrase leaving a space between words. For older kids, make them figure out your greeting. Intersect the words as you would in playing Scrabble, and see if they can solve the message. C is for…. Make a poster portraying your child’s characteristics. Put your child's name at the top. Then list as many positive descriptive words as you can that begin with your child's initial. Use a thesaurus to find oodles of words. (Example: Cassandra, cute, caring, creative, crafty, curious.) When you finish, laminate or frame it, and hang it in your child's room. Poetry praise. Give your child a poetry book written especially for sons or daughters, such as To My Son with Love or To My Daughter with Love

on the Important Things in Life, written by Susan Polis Schultz. These books offer encouragement and a new understanding of your love for and commitment to your child. Don’t forget to add your personal inscription inside.

DO IT TOGETHER Love is silly. One thing kids love and do best is act silly, so loosen up and join in the fun. If being silly isn’t your style, take a few lessons from your child, and practice up. Letting loose is a great way to reduce stress and to let your children know they're fun to be around. A gift of time. For today’s busy parents, finding time to read to or play with your child isn’t always easy. Fortunately, quality, rather than quantity, is what matters most. Show your child you care by setting aside a few minutes each day to talk, read, or play together. You’ll both reap the rewards. A class connection. As kids grow, time together becomes increasingly rare. Decide with your adolescent on an activity or hobby the two of you would enjoy together. Sign up for a class or set a regular schedule for the activity. Then mark it on your calendar. Treat it as you would any other commitment, not letting daily life interfere. A trip down memory lane. Flip through photo albums or watch family videos together, and reminisce about favorite holidays, vacations, and family times you’ve had together. Eventful gifts. Buy tickets to a concert, ice show, or sporting event your kids have been dying to see. But keep it a surprise. On the day of the event, just say you're all going out for dinner or some other concoction. Then catch your kids by surprise when you arrive at your actual destination. Make a date. Plan a regular date with your child for one-on-one time. This works exceptionally well for families with more than one child. Each parent should take a turn with each child. You can go out for lunch or supper, play putt-putt golf, watch a

movie, go roller-skating, or spend an afternoon at the park. Set a regular schedule so your child can look forward to your dates together.

GIFTS FROM THE HEART Flowers for her. Cut fresh flowers for your daughter to brighten her room and her day. Race cars for him. Clip sports cars from magazines for your son and post them on a bulletin board in his room. Engrave your thoughts. Have a necklace or bracelet engraved for your child. Be sure to include his name, your sentiments, and who it’s from. Van Gogh in the making. Sift through your child’s art collection and select a piece to display. Then matte, frame, and hang it in a room [other than your child’s] for everyone to see. Photos say a thousand words. Choose several pictures of your child from infancy through the present. Then use paper

Use photos, locks of hair, vacation postcards, and ticket stubs. Dedicate each page to a special holiday, event, or theme.
