Volunteers Work Together to Revitalize Henderson Home Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada (RTSNV) and California State Automobile Association (CSAA) volunteers collaborated to revitalize a Henderson home. CSAA generously granted RTSNV $15,000 for home repairs and revitalization, including painting, yard cleanup, and refreshing landscaping rock. This effort involved 40 CSAA volunteers, reflecting the commitment to safe and healthy housing by RTSNV, a local affiliate of the national nonprofit organization Rebuilding Together, established in 1994 to enhance the lives of low-income homeowners through home rehabilitation. Pursuit of Holiday Perfection Giving yourself permission to let go of the unobtainable

ARTICLE BY CRISSIE BOWN Holidays are the most wonderful time of the year, but they can also be the most hectic. Many of us are still adjusting to life out in the world again, and the holiday hustle can seem daunting after our worlds became so small the past few years. With social media, there’s more pressure than ever for the holidays to be perfect, but what is the perfect holiday? When my husband and I got married, I was so excited to host my big, crazy Greek family at our new house. We decorated early, did more grocery runs than can be counted, pulled out the nice dishes, had everyone’s favorites on hand, shopped for gifts over and over and wrapped early, made up guest rooms, and I even took the time to infuse the house with a holiday scent to make the ambiance more festive.

LUNACY! I was so focused on making sure everything was perfect that by the time everyone arrived, I was exhausted. That morning, my husband got called into the office, my water heater broke, and even though I followed instructions about the length of time it took to thaw my first 13-pound turkey- it was frozen solid! We polar plunged my toddler nephew in the cold shower, which traumatized him about using our bathrooms for several years. My family witnessed me having a Clark W. Griswold freak out on the phone with the home warranty company, after which I raced to Costco where, gratefully, they had prethawed turkeys, and my sister-in-law and I went through the

hilarious trauma of seeing what comes out of a turkey for the first time together. ICK! That night, as we sat at our dining room table, I listened to everyone sharing stories, laughing, and being content together despite the chaotic morning we’d had. I realized that we could have been eating takeout in sweatpants, and the result would have been the same. I share all of this to remind you, as we enter this busy season, that the holidays, like life, aren’t perfect, but it’s the imperfect moments that make for the best memories with family and friends. As you see pictures of “perfection” online or elsewhere, know that there was likely a whole lot of crazy, along with a few meltdowns that went on behind the scenes there, too. So, let go of the pursuit of perfection and embrace the crazy- it’s what the holidays are truly all about. Here are a few tips to hold on to your sanity this season: • Give yourself and those around you grace. • Prioritize your mental and physical health so you don’t get sick and miss the fun. • Even if you haven’t yet — get organized. Take the time to build lists in advance to save you from the chaos later. Plus, checking off small victories is good for the soul. • Take advantage of points/rewards programs to get discounts along the way. • Don’t feel bad if you’re not in the spirit — it’s your holiday, too. • Remember that you can’t control other people’s emotions, only your own. • Happiness is a choice, so find your joy — you deserve it. So many of us can let the festive spirit of the season take control of our wallets. To combat the holiday hangover before it starts, you may consider meeting with a financial planner to discuss how to keep your finances under control. We reached out to a local financial planner to discover key pitfalls and how to develop a strategy to keep your finances in check during the holiday season. DO YOU HAVE SUGGESTIONS FOR CREATING A REALISTIC HOLIDAY BUDGET THAT CONSIDERS GIFT-GIVING, TRAVEL EXPENSES, AND ENTERTAINMENT COSTS?

WHAT IS THE BEST APPROACH TO DEAL WITH THE PRESSURE TO OVERSPEND DURING THE HOLIDAYS, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO PEER AND FAMILY EXPECTATIONS?

The recommended approach is to create a budget in January after you have a realistic idea of your spending. January is a great time to reflect on the amount you spent and decide whether you want to spend more or less next year. Create a budget using the maximum amount you will spend in each area, then divide that number by 11. Then open a separate savings account and add what you come up with (one eleventh of the total) each month. Make sure you always have a small ‘miscellaneous’ category to care for the unexpected.

This is where an accountability partner (or spouse) helps a lot. You can also prepare friends and family by telling them you are sticking to a preplanned budget this year. Most people understand and will support your efforts.

ARE THERE ANY TAX IMPLICATIONS OR STRATEGIES WE SHOULD BE AWARE OF WHEN IT COMES TO HOLIDAY SPENDING OR GIFTING? This is a concept that is best addressed as part of a full financial plan. If gifting concerns are a tax strategy, this is something you should already be aware of and can use those gifting strategies over the holiday season.

The holiday season is upon us, and The District at Green Valley Ranch is spreading joy and festive cheer in the heart of Henderson. As a premier mixed-use metropolitan shopping, dining, and lifestyle center, The District has become a beloved gathering place that exudes urban sophistication. This year, they offer an array of holiday events and activities to make the season brighter and more meaningful than ever before.

A MAGICAL START TO THE SEASON: THE TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY The District kicked off the season in style with a Tree Lighting Ceremony in November. The event included snowfall at the top of every hour to get everyone into the holiday spirit. Attendees had the chance to meet the Sugarplum Fairy and the Nutcracker, enjoy the

enchanting melodies of an electric string trio, and cozy up for a complimentary showing of "The Polar Express" at The Green. Attendees were encouraged to bring a gift for The District’s toy drive benefiting St. Jude's Ranch for Children.

SANTA CLAUS HAS ARRIVED AT THE DISTRICT Through December 24, The District will be Santa's home away from the North Pole. Visitors have the chance to meet Santa in person at his cozy cottage and choose from three packages that suit their budget and preferences. A CHARITABLE HEART The District at Green Valley Ranch strongly commits to giving back to the community. This holiday season, they have teamed up with St. Jude's Ranch for Children, a community of hope and healing for children and young people, to collect toys specifically for teens in foster care aged 13 to 18. The District at Green Valley Ranch Marketing Director Micaela Wargo said, “We chose this age group because donations for teens are often scarce, and we firmly believe that everyone, regardless of age, deserves to have a magical holiday.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds.
