In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition, and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride, and appreciating those around us who have helped us along our journey can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. After my daily meditation, I open my journal and make a list of all the people, things, and situations that I am grateful for. This community of ours is definitely at the top of that list. I am also very thankful for this magazine, which helps me bring the best of what the valley has to offer to our wonderful part of town. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness, and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. With the holidays approaching and vacation time nearly here, it is a perfect time to swim over to 3rd Reef Divers to help plan your next vacation with a dive trip. paradise often deemed one of the most isolated places on our planet. In 1996, the U.S. Navy transferred administrative duties of the Atoll to the U.S. Department of Interior, Fish and Wildlife Services. However, financial challenges loomed due to the Atoll's unique location and abundant wildlife. It was during this time that the idea of opening Midway Atoll to the public was conceived, and 3rd Reef Divers seized the opportunity to become the very first dive operation on the Atoll. Larry, the driving force behind 3rd Reef Divers, vividly recalls the moment when this adventure began with a festive touch. "Let's have a party and celebrate all our hard work… LUAU!" he exclaimed. Their plan was simple: divers would hunt for lobsters, fishing enthusiasts would catch fish, and the eco-tourism group would secure drinks. As they set sail, an unexpected encounter with a "shark" added an exciting twist. Larry quickly clarified that it was,

in fact, a ray. But as they turned the boat around to investigate further, they stumbled upon a colossal Tiger Shark, which they playfully named "Maximus Colossus Giganticus King Tiger." Despite the intimidating encounter, Larry's unwavering confidence in his training, equipment, dive buddies, and environmental assessment skills prevailed. They continued their journey to the 1st, 2nd, and finally, the 3rd Reef, where the colossal Tiger Shark made yet another appearance. With a mutual "High-5," Larry and his dive buddy plunged into the water, captured large lobsters, and celebrated a memorable evening. Larry's story beautifully embodies the spirit of 3rd Reef Divers: boundless confidence and an insatiable passion for exploration. Larry's journey in the world of diving began in 1988 when he became a PADI Divemaster and Instructor while exploring the underwater wonders of Hawaii. He later owned and operated several successful dive shops in Hawaii and even established the first and only dive shop on historic Midway Atoll. In 1993, Larry achieved the prestigious title of PADI Course Director/Instructor Trainer, teaching instructor-level courses across various locations, including Hawaii, Okinawa, and Las Vegas. His extensive experience in the specialized dive entertainment industry includes roles such as Head of Aquatics at the “O" Show in Bellagio, Dive Safety Officer at Dolphin Habitat in Mirage Resort, and Senior FX operator and diver at Le Reve in Wynn Resort. Helping Older Adults with Holiday Loneliness T H E H O L I D AY S A R E A T I M E F O R FA M I LY, T O G E T H E R N E S S , A N D J OY I N C E L E B R AT I N G T H E S E A S O N

For many older adults, the holidays can be a time of loneliness, sadness, or isolation. Maybe their family lives in a different city, or perhaps children and grandchildren are spending the holidays with the other side of their family. The holidays can also be melancholic if their spouse has passed away or they’re reminded of other important people who have passed on. Whatever the reason, many older adults can find the holidays to be a difficult time. As a nurse and the Executive Director at Prestige Senior Living Mira Loma, I have a lot of interaction with seniors. With that in mind, I wanted to offer some advice to both older adults and their families during the upcoming holiday season.

ADVICE FOR OLDER ADULTS TO PREVENT HOLIDAY LONELINESS Find ways to be with others If you can’t celebrate with your family but still want to be around others, there are options to get out and celebrate the day or give back. Consider attending services at a place of worship or volunteering with a community organization. Make it a special day! Even if you’re spending it alone, don’t treat Christmas or Hanukkah like any regular day

– head out to the grocery store days in advance to either pick up ingredients for a nice dinner or a ready-made holiday meal. Have ready a book or movie (or both) that you’ve been waiting a while to take in. Celebrate in your own way! Reach out to old friends or acquaintances In addition to your family, use the holidays as a reason to catch up with old friends or acquaintances. Write some personal notes in the holiday cards you send. If you’re on Facebook, use the Messenger feature to wish people well over the holidays. You never know who could use a kind word! Enjoy some nostalgia No, things may not be like they were when you were younger. But this is a time to remember what made the holidays special for you in the first place. Maybe it’s watching your favorite holiday movie, putting together a scrapbook, or playing Christmas carols. If it makes you smile, do it!

ADVICE FOR FAMILY MEMBERS TO HELP THEIR LOVED ONES Stay connected Even if you can’t be together in person, a phone call or FaceTime can help a loved one remain an important part of the day. If FaceTime is possible, and your loved one sends presents to your kids, ask them to open

those gifts during a FaceTime call so your loved one can see their reactions. Embrace traditions A major cause of sadness in older adults during the holidays can be the loss of traditions. It can be difficult if the holidays don’t resemble what they grew up with. Talk to older loved ones and find out if there are any treasured traditions that may have fallen by the wayside they’d like to bring back. Eat and drink responsibly Yes, it’s the holidays, and everyone indulges a little – there’s nothing wrong with some holiday cookies, after all. However, overeating or excessive alcohol consumption can exacerbate underlying issues an older adult might be experiencing. It’s particularly important if they have health concerns tied to their diet. Do your best to ensure they’re staying on track while celebrating.

Talk it out If your loved one seems a bit down, sit down with them and open the lines of communication about how they’re really feeling. Many older adults struggle to start that conversation but find that doing so can really help. Even if you don’t sense any issues, you never know what might be lurking under the surface if you pose the question. Incredible, inspirational people are all around us, and in the heart of our community resides Denise Charles, a veteran who experienced domestic violence, trauma, and homelessness and now has helped thousands of people in similar situations. Denise’s inspiring story is one of resilience, personal growth, and an unwavering commitment to helping those in vulnerable situations get back on track to help themselves. As we welcome November, the month of giving thanks and Veteran's Day, we had the privilege of delving into Denise's life, showcasing a path of struggles to triumph that highlights the true power of hope and giving back. Denise was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and served in the United States Army for three years before being honorably discharged due to a disability. Her upbringing was challenging as her single mother raised her alongside her two younger sisters. Her childhood was far from idyllic, and as a result, she freely admits to making some poor choices

during her youth, going against the grain, and avoiding following home rules. “I saw a lot as a kid. More than any child should. I’m not going to lie; I made several bad choices and didn’t care. I struggled in high school, started drinking to numb the trauma I experienced, and began hanging with the wrong crowd,” Denise shared. High school was a difficult period for Denise. Coping with traumatic experiences and keeping company with those of negative influence led to a rift with her family, resulting in Denise’s mother putting her out with a black trash bag of personal property. Denise remembers the following words like it was yesterday: “Oh no. If I bought it, put it back.” She would then begin couch-surfing with friends and engaging in activities she would later regret. However, life took a significant turn when she experienced the tragic loss of a friend — a turning point for Denise — she realized the need for change in her life. She aspired to pursue higher education, but finances quickly became a blocker. It was

then that she made a life-altering decision — to join the military. Denise described her decision to enlist as one of the best she ever made. The structured environment was challenging, especially for someone with her self-proclaimed ‘strong personality,’ but she persevered and thrived. Her time in the military provided her with discipline and direction, setting her on a path toward personal growth and self-discovery. "Joining the Army was the best decision I could have ever made for myself ... I was able to maintain it and do it," Denise said proudly. After completing her service, Denise returned home, only to find herself slipping back into old habits and patterns. “I went back home, and I reverted back to the exact same person I was as a teenager,” she admitted. During this time, Denise met the father of her children and began a family of her own. However, once again, life took an unexpected turn as she faced challenges in her relationship, leading to separation and relocation to California.

“JOINING THE ARMY WAS THE BEST DECISION I COULD HAVE EVER MADE FOR MYSELF.” She worked tirelessly to provide for her children, enduring a grueling daily commute, determined to improve her situation, and striving to create a better future. Denise eventually returned to school to become a surgical technician while also navigating the difficulties of her personal life, later facing a domestic violence situation that forced her to seek a temporary protective order and relocate once again. Throughout this period, Denise powered through with resilience. She applied for Section 8 housing, a vital lifeline, and volunteered at a homeless shelter as part of her responsibility while receiving state public assistance. Denise's involvement at the homeless shelter quickly went beyond fulfilling her volunteer hours. She was deeply moved by an incident where a mother and her three children were turned away due to lack of space. This experience struck a chord with Denise, as it reminded her of her own journey of couch-surfing and the grace of having friends to rely on. Driven by her own experiences, Denise eventually became an employee at the shelter, working tirelessly to ensure that families in need found shelter. Her life took an unexpected turn when she received a job offer from St. Jude's Ranch for Children, an opportunity that would change everything. She joined the organization as Program Manager at the Crossings location. Where she not only earned a salary but also lived on-site with her family and 15 homeless youth. Her role provided her with the opportunity to empower and support young people experiencing homelessness and adversity. Since stepping into her role, Denise has served roughly 2,700 clients, with many of the current and former children at St. Jude’s Ranch for Children affectionately referring to her as 'Mama Bear.' Many of her clients consider her a second mother and have endearingly called her ‘Mom’ for

years. Denise has dedicated her career to breaking generational poverty cycles and positively influencing underserved youth. She instills the importance of transitioning from mere survival to living a joyful life, encouraging her clients to embrace change and to challenge themselves to become their best selves. Using her experiences of joining the military, pursuing an education, and mastering financial skills, she emphasizes to her clients the importance of stepping outside one's comfort zone to chase personal and professional dreams and ambitions. "I'm living, walking proof that if you get out of your own way and if you share with just one person, you never know what that person is going through and how that person could potentially help you," said Denise.” Hope and Determination pushed Denise to pursue school once again. She obtained her Bachelor’s in Management from the University of Phoenix in 2023, making her the first person in her family to graduate from College, and is currently working on her Master’s in Business Administration. Denise has been with the charity for more than a decade and gained professional guidance from her colleagues and leadership at St. Jude’s Ranch for Children. She was promoted to Program Director of Housing and Support Services, using her experiences to connect with and guide young individuals facing similar challenges. Her impact on their lives has been immeasurable, and she views her role as a twoway street, where she learns as much from the young people as they do from her. Today, Denise dedicates the majority of her career in hopes that sharing her journey from adversity to empowerment showcases the transformative power of resilience and commitment to one’s own success, making a positive impact on the lives of her clients and those with similar hardships.

The Traditional Table Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table.

For this classic, traditional look, a plaid throw blanket stands in for a tablecloth to establish a festive base layer. Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display.

The Fall Garden Party Table Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Falling For Neutrals SEASONAL DECOR TIPS FOR KEEPING IT SIMPLE I love decorating for the holiday season, but it gets tough if trying to keep a home decor airy, light and neutral. My home is full of neutrals, such as linen, khaki, white and gray, so decorating for the holidays can be tricky with the bright and bold themes on display at the stores. Here are tips regarding how to achieve a festive look without going overboard.

LESS IS MORE First, whenever decorating for the holiday season, I clear what's possible to make room for what's coming. I eliminate decor pieces that are displayed year-round to avoid adding clutter to rooms. Giving decor pieces or floral arrangements their own space to shine can pull the room together and make it feel very designed.

GO COZY Swapping out usual throw pillows and throw blankets for plushy, cuddly materials and seasonal prints are another simple way to add holiday spirit without being so literal. Opting for neutral plaids, cable knits, or sherpa materials add that feeling of fall and winter.

CATER TO ALL THE SENSES Don’t forget about the smell! Stocking up on candles that smell like the season is the last missing piece for a holiday vibe. The total sensory feeling of the holidays is what really brings a home to life, whether it's pumpkin spice burning for Thanksgiving or a fresh pine and cedar for Christmas.

STICK TO THE PALETTE As best as possible, I try to stick to each of the color palettes in my room. When it’s time to bring out pumpkins or holiday Santas, I stick to white and neutral or add in color pops of gold and silver to keep everything flowing. If I start to add too many primary colors, it ends up looking like a mash-up gone astray.

CELEBRATE MEMORIES The holidays are often bursting with family traditions and memories, and decor can reflect that, too. I have many items handed down over the years that I like admiring, but if they aren’t quite right for my room, there are options to bring the spirit of them to life. Framed holiday family photos in a black and white filter are an excellent way to tie in your history of celebrating in a subtle way.

LOOK TO NATURE Some of my favorite items to use for holiday decor come from a simple nature walk. Using actual items you find, or just getting inspiration from the outdoors is a great way to bring sights of the season indoors. For fall, elements such as branches, leaves and neutral gourds match with everything. For winter, I love using sticks with berries
