An inspirational male has the incredible opportunity to shape and mentor the young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. As a father, a coach, an uncle, or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all likely think of a man in our life that has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Maybe it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves or sees the best in us, or someone we look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but that inspires us by their greatness, we can recognize the impact these role models can make our lives. I personally have had numerous male role models I respect. As someone that played football through college, I have numerous coaches that left impressions on me about the importance of commitment, hard work, and perseverance. Then later in life, these learned and observed qualities always end up being needed to make it through challenging times. My hope is that I have taught my children qualities they will take through their lives as well. This month we are honoring gentlemen and their contribution to the betterment of our community. We are highlighting men who put themselves second, work hard, and inspire others to do the same. To all of the men out there that are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you. The lasting impact you are making, and the ripple effect that often ensues is worth it.

I enlisted with the United States Army in 2000 and completed basic combat training, Advanced Individual Training as a Combat Medic, and Army Airborne School. I served on a forward operating surgical team and was deployed to Afghanistan, providing combat surgical operations in the Kandahar and Khost provinces, before moving to Las Vegas in 2004.

WHY DID YOU START WORKING IN THIS INDUSTRY? I developed an affinity for law while studying cognitive psychology, the scientific study of attention, perception, reasoning, and problem-solving. Armed with this information, I began evaluating the logic behind American common law, how it is perceived, and the problems it attempts to solve. Unsatisfied with recreational study, I attended law school.

People like them because they’re quiet, but new Southern Nevada hiking and biking trails are making some noise. The Harry Reid UPRR Trail just completed in Henderson and the Red Rock Legacy Trail in development in the west valley provide the kind of infrastructure that bicycle advocates say is much needed in Southern Nevada. “Many cyclists — including my wife — don’t feel comfortable riding alongside the roadway,” said Clark County Commissioner Justin Jones, an avid bicyclist whose district includes the Red Rock trail route. “Once we make it a thing people feel safe doing, they are more likely to get out there.” According to the Federal Highway Administration, the lead agency on the project, construction is likely to begin next year on the $100 million, 20-mile paved trail through the federally protected Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. From one trailhead on far West Charleston Boulevard, the trail will go into the canyon, continue past the entrance to the scenic loop, and end near Blue Diamond Road and Durango Drive in the southwest valley. The first phase of the project will include a parking area near West Tech High School, a pedestrian bridge across a nearby wash, and building five miles of trail to near the Red Rock visitors center. Construction of the southern end of the trail would follow, with additional phases eventually connecting the sections. Jones said the county also is taking the needs of bicyclists more into account for projects in town. “We’ve changed the way we build bicycle lanes. In the past, they’ve been the narrow lanes at the side of the road, but the trend is toward protected or buffered lanes, so cyclists aren’t constantly being buzzed by the cars,” Jones said.

“From a west valley perspective, people will have the ability to go from Red Rock to our parks and bike paths in a connected way that hasn’t been there before,” said Jones, who added that “the cities of Henderson and Las Vegas saw the vision” and pioneered bicycle-friendly options. In Henderson, this spring marked completion of an $18 million project to build the final five miles of the 11-mile Harry Reid UPRR Trail. The trail goes east-west the length of the city and lets bicyclists travel from Boulder City to west of Green Valley without encountering motorized vehicles. “Henderson residents place a high value on parks, trails, and open space,” said Mayor Debra March. “The completion of the UPRR trail will provide a wonderful escape.” Running along Union Pacific Railroad rights of way, the Reid trail creates a spine for Henderson’s 220-mile municipal trail system that links neighborhoods with shopping, workplaces, and public amenities like the city’s new event venue, The Dollar Loan Center. “One of the benefits of this particular trail is it connects to so many areas within the city — schools, businesses, parks,” said Shari Ferguson, the city’s director of parks and recreation. “And with the exception of Gibson Road, the new section provides either bridges or tunnels to get people across existing streets.” “With an average of more than five pedestrians or bicyclists killed each month in 2021 on Clark County streets, there is an urgency to roadway safety,” said Tony Capsouto, vice president of the Southern Nevada Bicycle Coalition. “Henderson has shown what’s possible with all of the trails that the city provides to the community,” Capsouto said. “There’s no safer way for a bicyclist or pedestrian to travel.” Making use of a trail also provides health benefits beyond diminishing the likelihood of being hit by a car.

“Walking for exercise can increase cardiovascular fitness and muscle tone,” said Dr. Karin Esposito, senior executive dean for academic and student affairs at Roseman University College of Medicine, which is in development in Summerlin. Esposito, who can often be found hiking at Red Rock Canyon or Mount Charleston, said she hopes convenient trails and “the glorious weather here” will get more people moving, noting that the Southern Nevada Health District warns that one in four area adults gets little or no exercise. “Walking, particularly, is an easy way for people of different fitness levels to exercise together, without a lot of expense — just a good pair of shoes,” she said.

Opening Doors and Opportunities in the NFT Space “A mind is like a parachute; it doesn’t work if it’s not open.” ~ Frank Zappa For George J. Chanos, this quote has become a motto for his latest venture, People Reign LLC. The former Nevada Attorney General launched this art studio and online trading platform last month to showcase and promote emerging artists and transparency in the growing NFT Space. “Most people know very little about NFTs or “Non-Fungible Tokens,” said Chanos. “They are not limited to digital art. They are a smart contract attached to a crypto token. The smart contract, can represent anything of value. Anything you do with a contract you can do with NFT. You can buy a car, a home, or a business - using NFTs. They are an incredibly powerful new technological innovation.” Chanos - who is also a sought-after business advisor and strategist, speaker, and published author - is no stranger to pursuing the opportunities to learn and grow with the latest innovations. He said when an artist known as “Beeple” sold an NFT for $69 million at Christies in 2021, he decided that he needed to learn more about the NFT space. After some research, he recognized the long-term significance of this innovation and soon after created “People Reign.” And Chanos said his vision is beyond launching a new business venture; it’s about creating opportunities. “Art can be a powerful agent for social change,” said Chanos. “Prior to NFTs, opportunities for artists to get recognized, make a living, have a voice, and benefit greater society have been primarily for a select few within the fine art community. This is why we launched People Reign, because we believe block chain and NFTs present an unprecedented opportunity to empower artists, elevate their voices, and create positive economic and social value to humanity - today and tomorrow.”

An artist himself, Chanos paints, does sculptural assemblage, makes jewelry, and collects art. His writing also includes his latest book “Millennial Samurai: A Mindset for the 21st Century” that looks at the technological revolution, and how it will impact our lives over the next 3 decades. People Reign is working with approximately 20 artists and intends to expand to more than 50. How it works is the artist creates a piece of digital art and mints it on the block chain. They offer it for sale at a set price or auction it off on one of many NFT marketplaces – like Open Sea, Nifty Gateway, Makers Place, or Foundation Room. When someone buys it, the creator receives an automatic payment (equal to the designated residual set forth in the smart contract), into their crypto wallet. When the same art is resold by any subsequent buyer, the original creator receives that same designated residual - in perpetuity. The first group of artists to be featured on People Reign include the art of Billie Halliday, an unknown artist in the tradition of Banksy of London; Garilyn Brune, a deceased Los Angeles drag queen; Andy Young, also known as Strange Carrots; Lou Majors, a graphic designer and abstract artist famous for his graffiti art in Atlanta tagged “You are God;” and Shevi Al Faud, also known as veevinci, is a designer and illustrator from Bangladesh. “I’m excited to be included in the People Reign collection,” said Al Faud. “One of the biggest challenges for any artist is getting discovered. People Reign represents an opportunity to expose my art to a much larger audience, and I’m grateful for that opportunity.” A similar sentiment came from fellow artist Andy Young. “I believe NFTs are the future. The possibilities for creatives are extraordinary,” said Young. “I am very excited to be included in the People Reign Collection.” Having been called a “futurist” and a “visionary,” Chanos says he believes the world is at a “tipping point” and poised to either evolve into a “second enlightenment” or fall into “dystopian division.” He believes the choices we make over the next decade will profoundly influence our collective future over the next century. “The emerging NFT space is one of the fastest growing opportunities on the planet,” said Chanos. “It’s highly speculative, largely unregulated, and highly volatile. It is in one sense a speculative bubble, with a lot of worthless offerings. At the same time, it is a space in which some offerings have become incredibly valuable. It is not a fad. NFTs are here to stay, and they will only become more significant, more regulated, and more accepted as a medium of exchange. Today is ground zero in the NFT space. And that creates opportunities for those who can learn to successfully navigate the space.”
