HENDERSON

January 2022 PUBLISHER

Everett Dorand | everett.dorand@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Paige Candee | paige.candee@citylifestyle.com ACCOUNT MANAGER

A Fresh Start for Henderson! Well, everyone, 2022 is here! This past year felt both like it went by in a blur and like it would never end. But one thing is certain—we wouldn’t have made it to this turn of the year without the support of our incredible community. That’s you! This January, we want to take some time to focus on our health, your health, and Henderson’s health. There are still a lot of challenges out there, and it is up to all of us to work to get through them together. We all thrive when we work together and hold each other accountable. Make a point to check on your friends more often this month. Maybe instead of doing happy hour, you offer to meet up for a fitness class. Maybe you ask for your family’s support as you begin the search for a therapist for the first time. Maybe develop a self-care plan that you can actually commit to. Don’t use January as an excuse to “join a gym” and get in shape again. Really dig down and give some thought to your own needs that will make a real and positive change in your life. Cultivating wellness is an everyday activity. Whatever the next step for you is, we want to be a part of it. Share your January goals with us on social media (Instagram: @hendersonlifestyle, Facebook: Henderson Lifestyle) and check out some of the health tips we’ve included in this month’s issue to get you started.

THE FOUTZ LEGACY ARTICLE BY JACK WRIGHT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKEL CONRAD

FOUR GENERATIONS OF FOUTZ DENTISTS SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY’S HEALTH FOR 127 YEARS

The Foutz family has deep roots in the area dating back to the 1890s. Those years produced four generations of Foutz dental practitioners who have been integral to the community and its health. Dr. Barton H. Foutz is proud of his family legacy and his uncommon status as a Fourth-Generation dentist. “I guess you could say that dentistry is in my genes,” says Dr. Foutz, who has maintained a successful dental practice in Henderson since 1986. After graduating with honors from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry, Dr. Foutz made a point to be active in his community. As a young man, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout and currently serves on the Las Vegas area council executive board of the Boy Scouts of America. “I believe in organizations that teach young people to serve others and live a moral life. They are our future, and we need to help them succeed in every way possible.” Married for 35 years to wife JoAnne, Barton is the father of five children. His eldest daughter’s LDS mission to El Salvador inspired him to join ‘Smiles for Central America’—a humanitarian group offering free dental and medical services to thousands of young patients in El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. “It is a highlight every year I volunteer for the ‘Smiles for Central America’ team and can be part of enriching the lives of these deserving young people.” Through his volunteer work as well as his practice here at home, Dr. Foutz is always gratified to witness the life-changing difference dental care can make in people’s lives.

Evidence points to a strong link between oral health and overall health. Your mouth acts as a barometer for your health status. Gum disease and other mouth infections may lead to or indicate more serious problems such as diabetes or heart issues. Dental hygiene is not only vital for optimal health, but having a beautiful smile contributes to one’s confidence and personal well-being. Foutz Family Dentistry provides a wide range of dental services from preventative to cosmetic to restorative. “My great-grandfather would be astounded by today’s technology,” Dr. Foutz said. “When he began his practice in the late 1890s, dental drills were pedal-operated, and the only anesthetic available was whiskey.” “By the thirties (my grandfather’s era), nitrous oxide and x-rays were in general use, and when my father started his practice in the sixties, the high-speed, airdriven drill was the latest invention.” However, according to Dr. Foutz, the most hightech dental advances have occurred in just the past several years. “Keeping abreast of dental innovations requires continual study and commitment,” Foutz explained. “By the time training is completed for a new piece of equipment, there is already a newer model being introduced to take its place.” And the pace is just as rapid for cosmetic procedures thanks to advances in space-age resins, ceramics, and adhesives. “THESE DAYS, A PERSON WHO COMES IN WITH A CAVITY,” DR. FOUTZ SAID, “WILL LIKELY BE TREATED WITH A WATERASSISTED DENTAL LASER THAT REPLACES THE CONVENTIONAL DRILL. IT PRODUCES NO HEAT, NO VIBRATIONS AND, IN MANY CASES, ELIMINATES THE NEED FOR NEEDLES AND ANESTHESIA.”

“These durable, tooth-colored materials have caused a revolution in cosmetic restorations,” Foutz said. “Porcelain veneers are all the rage, and silver fillings have become practically obsolete.” “These days, a person who comes in with a cavity,” Dr. Foutz said, “will likely be treated with a water-assisted dental laser that replaces the conventional drill. It produces no heat, no vibrations and, in many cases, eliminates the need for needles and anesthesia.” Another innovation in dentistry is the digital x-ray. It uses less than 20 percent of the radiation needed by traditional film-based x-rays. The images are viewed on a computer screen and can be e-mailed to the patient’s home or to the insurance provider. Foutz Family Dentistry also offers Invisalign® invisible braces, Botox, and dermal fillers to complement individuals’ smiles and visibly turn back the clock. Dentist, father, and family man, Barton Foutz leads by example, giving his time and energy to both his family and patients while fulfilling a lifelong mission to help promote health and serve others. And, yes, there will soon be a fifth-generation Foutz dentist.

Bettering Lives through Wellness, Balance, & Success Q&A WITH LOCAL MENTAL WELLNESS EXPERT

Lawyer turned life coach, energy worker, author, and owner of Wellness, Balance, & Success, São Paulo, Brazil-born Camilla Dorand empowers clients to feel confident and empowered to change their lives for the better. Previously, Camilla was an image consultant and co-host on a makeover show before going through thyroid cancer and reevaluating her priorities. She then set her intentions on helping others excel to the next level. She earned her master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling and a certification in hypnotherapy, and is now working toward a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision. With an emphasis on a holistic and integrative approach, the “Back to Me; Changing How I Feel About My Mother, My Body, and Men” author encourages others to explore their strengths and come into their power. Henderson Lifestyle asked Camilla to share her thoughts on mental wellness and what we all can do in 2022 to have a calmer mindset paired with balance and success.

HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE WHAT YOU DO?

ARTICLE BY PAIGE CANDEE PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANK MOLNAR

The type of work I do is holistic and integrative. Most of us have suffered some type of trauma growing up that has shaped the way we look at ourselves, relationships, and the world. A lot of the time, these beliefs get in the way of us becoming who we are meant to be. My work is to help clients heal from their past experiences and identify their power within. I help clients learn how to be comfortable with their discomfort so that they can build resiliency and learn how to tackle life’s challenges and turn them into opportunities for growth and a more fulfilling/satisfactory life. My work involves therapeutic interventions, hypnotherapy, coaching skills, and when clients are opened to it, Reiki. CONTINUED >

“Acceptance doesn’t mean simply giving up on change. Acceptance means finding peace within because we understand that we are only in control of our behavior, and therefore we can only make changes in ourselves.”

WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH, AND WHY HAS IT BECOME A BUZZ PHRASE?

HOW DOES YOUR HOLISTIC APPROACH HELP A PERSON’S OVERALL WELLNESS?

Mental health is still a stigma for many people; many feel ashamed for feeling the way they do, which is why they don’t look for help. With the lockdown due to the pandemic, people were forced to stay home, and suddenly there were no more distractions (entertainment, trips, gyms, traffic, etc.). We were forced to stay with ourselves and our thoughts. Many people have unresolved traumas, and the lack of distractions resulted in them having to face such traumas; that is a big part of why there was a 30 percent increase in anxiety, depression, domestic violence, addictions, alcoholism, etc. People have realized that they need to take care of their mental wellness to have more peace in their lives. Having someone to talk to and guide them through the healing process is key, and that’s where I come in.

This answer is twofold: my lens allows me to look at clients as being mind, body, and soul, and help them connect these three elements. I also understand that overall wellness comes from cultivating wellness socially, physically, emotionally, environmentally, financially, spiritually, and intellectually. I encourage my clients to invest in these areas and make changes to live a life that makes more sense to them and feels more fulfilling.

WHY IS ACCEPTANCE SUCH AN IMPORTANT PART OF MENTAL HEALTH? This is a complex question. Acceptance doesn’t mean simply giving up on change. Acceptance means finding peace within because we understand that we are only in control of our behavior, and therefore we can only make changes in ourselves. Acceptance means allowing ourselves to feel every emotion that comes up because they are there to teach us something and because they are part of being human. Instead of running away from the discomfort, we must approach it with care and compassion to see what is causing that uneasy feeling. Anxiety can be our friend; it can teach us so much about ourselves and our situation. Once we understand, we can take action to make changes and find ease. Another important part of acceptance is understanding that people have different ways of doing things based on their traumas, experiences, etc. Just because they do things differently doesn’t mean that they’re right or wrong. What’s right for you might be wrong for me, and vice versa. Acceptance is living our lives in a way that makes sense to us because we are all unique. Even siblings who grew up in the same household might do things differently about the same situation. Acceptance also means connecting to the present moment. For example, people thought that 2021 was going to be a year that we all went back to our lives like they were before COVID. That didn’t happen, and it stirred a lot of anxiety, anger, depression, and frustration in people who were counting (expecting) 2021 to be different. Learning to take one day at a time and being fully present allows us to make the most of the situation we are in peacefully. That is acceptance.

22

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | HE ALTH + W E LLNE S S

WHAT ARE YOUR 5 TIPS FOR CREATING A CALMER MINDSET? 1. Develop a morning routine where you can be with yourself with no distractions. During this time, you can journal and set your intentions for the day, meditate, and maybe exercise. 2. Start practicing gratitude; I suggest finding 3 things, people, or situations that you are grateful for every single day. 3. Be more present with yourself. 4. Develop a self-care plan. 5. Learn to accept things as they are.

TELL US WHY YOU WROTE BACK TO ME: CHANGING HOW I FEEL ABOUT MY BODY, MY MOTHER, AND MEN AND WHAT READERS CAN EXPECT TO GET OUT OF IT? I wrote this book because I have overcome many personal challenges that allowed me to transform myself and become the person I am meant to be. My relationship with my mother affected me deeply, and I grew up feeling very angry, depressed, and anxious. I hated my life and who I was. I used food as a coping mechanism and to keep people away from me. I felt disconnected from myself. I felt lost, lonely and made several decisions that didn’t resonate with me. For a long time, I felt basically unhappy. This book is about my transformation. It’s about the journey that led me to heal from my past and look at myself and my life differently. The book is about having the courage to live life authentically and wholeheartedly; it’s about forgiveness and embracing change. I wrote this book to inspire and empower women to take charge of their lives and make the changes they long for.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? If we all have the courage to look within and work on ourselves, we can heal and live a more peaceful life. Instead of wanting people and things to be different, start the journey within, throw away what no longer serves you and make space for what does. You can become the person you were meant to be.

Silver State Schools Credit Union Spreads Financial Health With Community Giving and Educational Programs ARTICLE BY JENNIFER BRADLEY | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF SILVER STATE SCHOOLS CREDIT UNION

Financial Literacy is extremely important to Silver State Schools Credit Union (SSSCU) and are committed to providing free financial education for all members as well as the community. SSSCU believes, when Financial Literacy is taught at an early age, positive financial habits can be both formed and fostered. With financial education knowledge, individuals can gain a much better understanding of their complete financial picture. This includes having adequate savings dollars in their accounts, ensuring they obtain and build the proper credit profile, and building a proper investment portfolio. The end goal is to achieve financial success. “Silver State Schools Credit Union helps members navigate their life’s journey with financial solutions–at every stage of life,” said Scott A. Arkills, president and CEO of Silver State Schools Credit Union. “Credit unions are essential for the community and the community they serve. What ultimately makes credit unions different, though, is our dedication to member service and to fulfilling our social purpose of ‘people helping people.’ Our valued members are the heart of everything we do and it is rewarding to grow with their families, and to share savings and spending habits to the next generation.” Our members’ financial journey begins with a “Junior Account.” Once a child has been issued a social security number, a parent or guardian may open an account in their child’s name. This is important as parents can establish their child’s primary savings account at an early age, begin saving for their child’s higher education needs, and as the child grows, establish solid financial habits. Adult membership options include Regular Membership or the “MYAccount Savings and Checking,” which is designed for young adults aged 18 to 25. For young adults, having access to funds that allow them to pay for college

expenses, living and transportation costs, and/or day-today activities is important. Young adults should consider short-term goals, such as buying their first home or paying off college debt, as well as long-term goals, such as planning for retirement. Silver State Schools Credit Union understands the value of being well informed regarding financial literacy and providing that kind of information at an early age. That is why SSSCU offers financial literacy courses through its Money Moves program at various elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools in southern Nevada, as well as, providing in-person financial literacy lessons. In April 2021, Arkills, presented a course on “The Importance of Savings,” to the Girls Athletic Leadership School (GALS). The course was dedicated towards teaching these sixth, seventh and eighth grade students the value of building early savings and earning compounded interest. SSSCU has also partnered with the Clark County School District (CCSD) and opened an in-school branch at Southeast Career Technical Academy (SECTA). The SECTA “Roadrunner Branch” opened in September 2021 allowing students, faculty, and staff a place to manage their banking needs, as well as teaching eight selected students about a career in the banking industry. This integration allows SSSCU to reach youth and guide them on the path to financial success. SSSCU is also working on developing financial literacy courses for higher education institutions in southern Nevada directed towards graduating seniors, to prepare them for the various financial decisions they will face after graduation. Silver State Schools Credit Union has also partnered with two financial literacy programs so our members can obtain the financial education they need. The “Money Moves” CONTINUED >

President and CEO Scott Arkills sharing the new SSSCU In-school Branch at Southeast

“One of the expanded goals of the in-school branch program is to provide increased financial literacy awareness to parents to help provide a solid foundation of financial literacy at home so parents can assist in ensuring good financial habits.” Financial Education Center is a free financial education program that provides an engaging learning experience through a series of online interactive courses. “BALANCE” financial education and resources provide members with free access to online financial courses, live webinars, and debt management courses, and access to confidential, no-cost financial counseling services, which are also available in Spanish. In 2022, Silver State Schools Credit Union will continue to place emphasis on financial literacy both at the K through 12 level of education as well as to the higher education community. SSSCU will provide members with

additional access to educational financial literacy webcasts on its website as it expands its offerings throughout the calendar year. One of the expanded goals of the in-school branch program is to provide increased financial literacy awareness to parents to help provide a solid foundation of financial literacy at home so parents can assist in ensuring good financial habits. Through its relationship with Vegas PBS and the CCSD Partnership Office, Silver State Schools Credit Union will be providing financial assistance to educational programs for the purpose of increasing financial literacy awareness in southern Nevada.

Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition

The Cold Plunge

Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.”

34

S ELF CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLNE S S

Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
