In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is on spending time with those you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition, and achieving goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride, and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling whom we were made to be. We all have family members that have had to endure challenges. I have family members who survived cancer and others who did not. The same with the pandemic. It is likely that all of us were affected by the loss of a friend or family member. And it is through these challenges in life that we all become more thankful for our blessings. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness, and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. We are especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. Hope is Born Here Q&A WITH LIVING GRACE HOMES

Kathleen Miller Executive Director and Co-Founder | Living Grace Homes Living Grace Homes is a non-profit organization that helps young mothers grow into healthy, empowered and productive women. It hosts two residential homes for pregnant and parenting young women, ages 14 to 24, who are homeless or in danger of becoming homeless. The first home opened in 2007 and the second home in 2014. In its 15 years, the charity has served close to 630 young moms for part or all of their pregnancy by providing housing, transportation, education, and life skills to prepare for parenthood.

WHY DID YOU START LIVING GRACE HOMES? In 2007, Clark County had the highest teen pregnancy rate AND the highest rate of unaccompanied youth in the country, and there were no programs that focused on keeping moms and babies healthy and helping them become self-sufficient. There was a need that was not being addressed, and young moms were slipping through the cracks. So, I started Living Grace Homes to help fill that void.

SHARE A SUCCESS STORY WITH US. In August, I received a text message with pictures of a young man starting his first day at a local high school. He was the first baby who came home to Living Grace Homes after birth. When Sarah, his mom, came to us in 2007, she was 18 years old, four and a half months pregnant, and had not finished high school. She came from a broken home and had been in and out of juvie. The father of her child was a former gang member and felon. When Sarah was filling out the entry paperwork, she saw the requirement that residents must be in school, working or both. She looked up at me and said, “I’ll get a job — I have to work to support my child because I cannot depend on anyone else to support us. But school? I don’t need no stinking school!” (Actual quote!) True to her word, within a week, she had a job offer; however, she had to wait two weeks for the next new hire orientation. So, while she waited, we looked into her GED. Once we got her transcript, we were surprised to find she only needed to test out of two classes to graduate. Two months later, she walked, cap and gown, and was six months pregnant.

Living Grace Homes Sarah continues to call me ‘Aunt Kathleen’ and has stayed in close contact. She’s now a successful insurance agent, has another child, and cares for her grandmother.

WHAT DOES LIVING GRACE NEED THE MOST? The two things Living Grace Homes needs the most are volunteers and monthly donors. Since we opened our doors, we have been blessed with donations of goods and services. Volunteers help with transportation, give house parents a reprieve, share their own stories with young moms, and more. The classes we provide for the girls have all been on donated time by professionals in the community for financial literacy, parenting, nutrition, infant safety, etc. Monthly donors truly help us keep the lights on and the doors open.

WHAT ARE YOU GRATEFUL FOR? While I am VERY grateful for the donors and volunteers that have helped us keep the doors open for 15 years, I’m even more grateful for the young women who have found their way to Living Grace Homes, and we have been able to plant seeds. Hope is truly born here.

Vegas City Opera Real Vegas, Real Opera THE PASSIONATE VOICE OF AN INDISPENSABLE ART FORM ARTICLE BY KIM AMATO

There are many opera houses in the U.S., and soprano Ginger Land-van Buuren has graced the stage of many of them, from her debut singing the lead role in “An Incomplete Education” at The Bronx Opera to Opera Resident Artist in Portland, Oregon. As a member of the Screen Actors Guild, she has appeared on the big screen opposite Vin Diesel in “Find Me Guilty,” as “Laughing Opera Singer” in the Fandango commercials, and in theatrical productions of “Hello Dolly,” “Showboat,” “South Pacific,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “My Fair Lady.” After relocating to Las Vegas with her husband Christiann and realizing there wasn’t a vibrant opera scene, she launched Sin City Opera with Artistic Director Skip Galla Katipunan. Now known as Vegas City Opera, it staged three operas during its first season in 2010-2011. It recently staged a dozen productions, including a free event inspired by poetess Maya Angelou, “The Voices of Women” at the Henderson Pavilion, and “A Very POPera Holiday” at the Water Street Plaza Amphitheater. Save the date for this year’s POPera production with free admission on December 10th. Executive Director Land van-Buuren couldn’t live in a city without opera and

classical music, so she made it her mission to tell new stories with complex, beautiful melodies that are still relevant. Vegas City Opera also creates unique performance art pieces for charity functions, art festivals, museums, and other special events, making opera accessible to all ages by collaborating with the City of Henderson, the City of Las Vegas, and Clark County Parks & Recreation. While the pandemic affected its usual operations, contracts with singers funded by the Nevada Arts Council allowed Vegas City Opera to perform in small groups throughout Las Vegas and Henderson. Maybe you were lucky enough to catch “Opera in the Movies” during the Henderson Art Walk featuring selections from “The Godfather,” “Moonstruck,” “Casino,” “Pretty Woman,” and Disney’s “Up.” They even filmed a mini version of Richard Wagner’s “The Ring” outdoors in Henderson, on the Strip, and in homes. This Vegas City Opera season will include the U.S. premiere from the National Theater in London’s revival of “The Three Penny Opera” from October 27th-30th. Auditions for youth choristers to be a part of the production were held recently,

continuing the organization’s outreach and education, including history and context, repertoire, movement, acting, etiquette, professional development, master classes, vocal instruction, and coaching. When she isn’t performing, Land van-Buuren devotes her time to the B.E. A S.H.E.R.O. Foundation to provide resources needed to support, sustain, and empower young girls and women under the age of 25 who have been abused, abandoned, and exploited. Originally an Advisory Board member, she currently sits on the Executive Board of Directors. She has helped develop new programs like the SHERO Shield to educate and train parents about sex trafficking and the SHERO Mobile Sanctuary, which transports survivors to places where girls are trafficked to provide them with options and coping mechanisms. Ginger is deeply involved with the volunteer-driven organization, also supporting its many fundraising events, including the “I Am Radiant Fashion Show” empowering teens to own their confidence and develop safety and awareness skills. It’s all a part of Land-van Buuren’s voice being heard through art and passion.
