Food is an integral part of how we experience the world around us. Whether you’re planning a much-needed date night with your significant other or you’re making plans with some friends, it’s always a challenge deciding where to go for dinner. Not that Las Vegas has any shortage of dining options — quite the opposite, actually. That’s why so many locals often resort to dining at the same restaurants over and over again rather than trying someplace new, as the sheer number of options can be a bit overwhelming. However, with Finger Licking Foodie Tours, Vegas foodies don’t have to settle on just one spot for dinner.

The sister company of Las Vegas’ award-winning guided group food tours, Lip Smacking Foodie Tours, Finger Licking Foodie Tours invites parties of two to 15 people to book their own self-guided food tour at one of six delectable dining destinations found off-Strip. Guests will be e-mailed an itinerary that includes scheduled stops at three noteworthy (and diverse) restaurants located near one another — like Echo & Rig, El Dorado Cantina, and Ada’s Wine Bar at Tivoli Village or Borracha Mexican Cantina, Bottiglia Cucina & Enoteca, and Hank’s Fine Steaks & Martinis at Green Valley Ranch Resort — and spend anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour at each place sampling some of its signature cuisines. “Dining at one restaurant is just a typical night out,” said Donald Contursi, a longtime Las Vegas food server who created Lip Smacking Foodie Tours and Finger Licking Foodie Tours as an easier way for people to experience some of the city’s top restaurants. “Dining with immediate seating and VIP service at three different restaurants in one outing is a true night to remember.” While Finger Licking Foodie Tours initially began in 2020 as a way to give people the option of still going on a food tour during the pandemic without sitting at a table with a large group of people they didn’t know, Contursi noted that about 65 percent of the company’s business now comes from Las Vegas locals. “Locals love our self-guided tours because it allows them a relaxed way to discover new establishments that may turn into new favorites that they end up frequenting regularly,” Contursi stated. “Both Tivoli Village and Green Valley Ranch are just minutes from the Strip but feel a world away. Both boast fantastic restaurants, too. These tours are perfect for date night, special celebrations, or just a laidback TGIF outing to explore new neighborhood restaurants with ease.”

Many factors go into curating Finger Licking Foodie Tours’ list of participating restaurants, including making sure that the staff at each location is attentive, professional, and welcoming, so diners get the full VIP treatment. Of course, the food must be phenomenal as well. Each restaurant typically showcases three dishes known for satisfying customers and critics alike, such as Borracha’s flavorful Chili Relleno and Echo & Rig’s palate-pleasing Portobello Fries served with herb aioli. Guests can also add a pre-selected signature cocktail at each stop for an additional $50 per person. While the tasting menus at each eatery are designed for guests to share, the portions are still pretty generous. Guests are encouraged to come hungry and may even want to ask for some doggy bags along the way so they can save some room for the final stop on their tour. Finger Licking Foodie Tours’ 2-and-a-halfhour Green Valley Ranch Resort tour is offered Wednesday through Monday at 4:30 p.m. and costs just $125 per person; its 2-hour Tivoli Village tour is available daily at 4:30 p.m., 5:00 p.m., and 5:30 p.m. and priced at $99 per person. Self-guided tours of downtown Las Vegas, the Arts District, Chinatown, and Virgin Hotels Las Vegas are also offered. Whatever tour locals decide on, they’re in for an unforgettable experience that’s well worth every penny. “It would be near-impossible for someone to organize an experience like this on their own,” Contursi concluded. “With our tours, you enjoy a variety of signature dishes curated specially for you. Gratuities are also included in the ticket price, so there’s no fumbling with a tab or gratuities at the end. All you have to do is relax and enjoy. It’s as easy as that.”

Creating a modern kitchen
“I love what I do. If I do something, I give it 100% or don’t touch it at all." For Johnny Ohana, owner and founder of Terra Mia Construction, this is a personal mantra he has put into every project since he and his partner started their Las Vegas-based business about three years ago. And yes, if you do the math, that is right before the world was turned upside down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "After we opened our doors, it was too late to do a U-turn," said Ohana. "Now I am happy I did not U-turn and continued with the business." The last few years had turned out to be a very busy time for Ohana and his team. Terra Mia Construction is a full-service home renovation company based in Las Vegas. They do everything from kitchen remodeling, bathroom renovations, floorings, and much more. And since the pandemic began, many of the requests from clients have involved the transformations of home kitchens. “When people enter the house, their eyes go straight to the kitchen. It’s like the crown jewel of the home," said Ohana. "I compare home or kitchen renovations to fashion. Today, you wear red. In 10 years, maybe rainbow will be in style. It changes, and we are always ready to help people make their dreams a reality." Ohana explains that his clients, especially those who are professional chefs or avid home cooks, come to him

with a very specific vision of what they want. The key for most clients is having a kitchen that makes their lives more convenient. "Some of these kitchens we see have not been updated for over 50 years," said Ohana. "Today, we have features and materials to work with that did not exist two decades ago. Things like soft close for cabinets and drawers and stain and smell-resistant materials for countertops. Colors are also important. White is very popular now because they just open up the space." One of Ohana's current clients is a professional chef who works on the Las Vegas Strip. He said what she requested is a kitchen that pretty much resembles her workspace at a high-end restaurant. "One thing she wanted is a "pot filler." It is a faucet that goes straight from the wall to just over the cooktop. It's a major convenience factor when you have multiple pots going simultaneously." One thing Ohana is proud of from the first day he started his business is always giving his customers honest advice, no matter how big or small the work. "I guide them to exactly the goal they want, one that fits their needs," said Ohana. "For example, everyone may want a gourmet kitchen, but not everyone needs a gourmet kitchen. We help every customer create a space that fits their needs, budget, and vision. That is very important to me."

We’re planning a November wedding for our son and his fiancée, and it’s time to sample wedding cakes. There are lots of new trends and flavors to choose from, so we reached out to Jerica Diez, owner of oCAKEsions Las Vegas. Whether designing a custom birthday, wedding, baby shower, graduation, or any milestone cake, the flavors come first. Currently, Jerica says the most popular flavor is Hawaiian Guava cake made with strawberry guava cake, homemade guava gel glaze, and a tangy cream cheese filling. She also recommends Mango Lovers, Classic Strawberries & Cream, and Chocolate Lover’s Delight. You can even kick it up a notch with some Grand Marnier syrup. People don’t settle for vanilla…unless that’s your favorite. Lately, customers have been asking for a clean, modern look with bold colors, minimal design, and tiers of different heights. But the Boho (bohemian) look is still strong with a typically semi-naked buttercream-covered cake and perhaps a simple dried floral with just a dash of gold. There are several icing techniques to choose from, including classic Lambeth that uses layers of royal icing for intricate designs; the Kitsch Cake trend, which is like Lambeth but made with buttercream and fun non-classic colors; and the Heart shaped cake which was super trendy back in the ’70s but is now making a comeback.

A custom cake usually takes two weeks, allowing a week to prepare and special order any items, and a week to make the cake. Custom toppers and fondant flowers take time to dry, and these things can’t be rushed. With a motto like “a party without a cake is just a meeting,” Jerica takes her cake obsession very seriously. Originally from the Philippines, she graduated from the Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts and began her career as a baker for Strip restaurants. “I liked this hobby, so I learned all about it. I lusted about it, so I worked hard to get better. I loved [and continuously love] it, so I keep doing it.” She pours more than sugar and flour into her one-of-a-kind cakes, but also her love and passion. Pizza Heroes is a friendly, casual, Italian American family-owned pizza parlor where guests are treated like family. Each pizza is crafted with attention to detail and with the healthiest and tastiest ingredients available. The owners’ family has been in the restaurant and baking business since the mid-1800s in Rome and Apulia and two years in Henderson. Pizza Heroes Owner and “Your” Pizza Chef Veronica Renna Babini shared some details about what makes their pizza so special.
WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER PIZZA RESTAURANTS? Why should pizza be a greasy junk food when it can be a perfectly balanced and nutritious meal for everyone — kids especially? We make our own pizza dough while others put a lot of sugar and yeast to make it rise faster, but that’s heavier for you to digest. We installed a water filtration system, so we only use purified water. We don’t add sugar or salt, and we use little yeast, making it light and easy to digest. Others also put lots of oil, butter, or eggs to make the dough softer. But we let our dough get soft through a long natural raise (a minimum of 24 hours). Our pizza sauce is made with 100 percent fresh crushed tomato, perfectly ripened from California. We don’t
cook it or add oil, salt, sugar, or garlic. For pizza toppings, we only use all-natural American farmed and raised meats, handpicked vegetables, and delicious homemade ranch and marinara sauces. We have families and kids in mind; our goal is to offer them a healthy dinner. We care for our customers, and being Italians, we love food and eating well too!
DO YOU USE LOCAL OR SEASONAL VEGETABLES? We buy our vegetables from places that have paved the way for the healthy organic revolution, such as Whole Foods and Sprouts. We trust them to partner and choose the best farmers to give us consistently the necessary veggies that Americans expect and want year-round as their topping.
WHAT ARE YOUR MOST POPULAR MENU ITEMS? All the traditional pizzas, white pizzas made with ricotta and mozzarella, vegetarian and vegan pizzas, delicious oven-baked and flash-fried “all-natural jumbo” chicken wings, Cannoli and Mini Cannoli with shells that are handmade in Palermo Sicily, and our ranch dressings (a handmade personal recipe that is ultra-smooth and digestible without any lemon juice or vinegar... but now I am telling you all of my secrets (she said with a laugh).
