Welcome to our Kids and Pets Issue

In our fast-paced world, it's easy to overlook the profound joy that kids and pets bring into our daily lives. They are vital to our health, happiness, and the fabric of our coastal community.

Research shows that pets significantly improve our mental and physical health. Their unconditional love can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and boost our overall mood. It’s no wonder many of us bring our pets to work every day.

Similarly, children bring unparalleled joy and wonder. Their energy, curiosity, and innocence remind us to appreciate the small things and embrace a playful approach to life.

Kids and pets are instrumental in building and strengthening our Island community. Pets often bring neighbors together through dog walks, dog parks, and community events, fostering camaraderie and support.

Children also play a crucial role in community cohesion. Schools, sports teams, and extracurricular activities create networks of parents and guardians who nurture the next generation. These connections build a resilient Island community where everyone looks out for one another.

We are fortunate to live in a place that values the well-being of both our kids and pets. Local organizations, businesses, and residents are dedicated to creating a safe, supportive, and enriching environment for all.

Let's continue to celebrate and prioritize kids and pets in our lives. They are essential to our personal happiness and community betterment. Together, let's ensure our Island remains a place where both our pets and children can flourish.

Our care and attention shape who they become. We hope this issue inspires you to give a little extra to the kids and pets in your life.

Thank you for welcoming us into your home and lives, every month. Hope to see you around town.

Love local, live local, and spend locally, Until next month...

“Coastal Alabama Business Chamber’s inaugural C.A.K.E. Day has emerged as a beacon of hope for aspiring young entrepreneurs in the region.”

The Coastal Alabama Business Chamber has long been recognized as a catalyst for economic growth and development in the region. This year, the chamber took a step further in nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit by organizing its inaugural event, the Coastal Alabama Kid Entrepreneurs (C.A.K.E.) Day. This unique initiative provided students with the opportunity to put their newfound skills to the test in the real world, leveraging the knowledge gained from the chamber’s workshops.

Under the guidance of Penny Hughey, the vice president of education and programs, C.A.K.E. Day was designed with the future entrepreneurs of Coastal Alabama in mind. The chamber had previously conducted workshops where students interested in business gain hands-on experience, observing operations outside of the traditional classroom setting. These workshops served as a foundation for the students’ journey towards becoming successful entrepreneurs.

During C.A.K.E. Day, the participating children showcased their entrepreneurial prowess by developing their own businesses from scratch. They embraced the challenge of creating their own unique brands, offering a diverse range of products and services. From coffee to lemonade stands, from jewelry and art to handmade fishing lures, the young entrepreneurs displayed their creativity and business acumen.

The event not only gave students an opportunity to showcase their products but also allowed them to experience the true essence of entrepreneurship. They learned valuable lessons in marketing, sales, customer service, and financial management. Moreover, C.A.K.E. Day fostered a sense of community and camaraderie among the young entrepreneurs, as they networked and collaborated with their peers.

For those interested in participating in this transformative event, the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber provides all the necessary information on

their website, www.mygulfcoastchamber.com. This resource offers insights into how students can get involved, register for workshops, and ultimately participate in C.A.K.E. Day.

By providing them with practical skills and real-world experience, the chamber is equipping the future leaders of Coastal Alabama with the tools necessary to thrive in the business world.

C.A.K.E. Day serves as a testament to the chamber’s dedication to fostering economic growth and empowering the next generation of entrepreneurs.

The impact of C.A.K.E. Day extends beyond the event itself. Participating students have not only gained valuable entrepreneurial skills but have also developed a sense of confidence and independence. They have learned to take risks, think creatively, and adapt to challenges - qualities that are essential for success in any business venture.

In addition to the practical skills acquired, C.A.K.E. Day has also instilled in these young entrepreneurs a sense of social responsibility.

As Coastal Alabama continues to thrive economically, the chamber’s efforts in inspiring and empowering the next generation of business leaders will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping a prosperous future for the region. By nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit from a young age, the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber is sowing the seeds for a vibrant and innovative business community.

Coastal Alabama Business Chamber’s inaugural C.A.K.E. Day has emerged as a beacon of hope for aspiring young entrepreneurs in the region.  As Coastal Alabama embraces its future as a hub of innovation and entrepreneurship, the chamber’s initiatives will continue to shape the region’s business landscape for years to come.

Within the walls of the Baldwin County Animal Shelter, a team of dedicated individuals tirelessly works to provide shelter, care,

and love to animals in need. Their mission is not simply to rescue, but to transform the lives of these vulnerable creatures. Picture the sight of an older dog, graying around the muzzle, waiting patiently for a chance at a loving home. At the Baldwin County Animal Shelter, these wise souls are celebrated and cherished. Recognizing the unique bond that can be formed with an older dog, the shelter’s team works tirelessly to match them with compassionate individuals and families who understand the immeasurable joy and responsibility that comes from providing a second chance. Through their efforts, these senior dogs find solace, comfort, and the love they so richly deserve.

But the shelter’s impact extends far beyond the walls that house these beloved animals. It is a source of education, inspiring the community to embrace responsible pet ownership. By spaying and neutering our pets, we not only prevent unwanted litters but also contribute to their overall health and well-being. The shelter’s team tirelessly advocates for this vital procedure, ensuring that every pet that leaves their care is given the best possible start in life.

Furthermore, the shelter stresses the importance of microchipping, vaccinations, and protecting our pets. These simple acts of care and responsibility can mean the difference between a lost pet being reunited with its family or languishing in uncertainty. By shining a light on the significance of

Rob and Ginny Barnas, along with Mickey Cornell and their dedicated staff at Island Air, have not only built a successful business, but they have also assisted in creating a haven for our beloved feline friends. This

summer is POPSICLE SEASON

KIDS AND POPSICLES ARE THE PERFECT SUMMERTIME PAIR

As temperatures rise, children race to the freezer for this frosty treat or wait anxiously for the approach of the musical ice cream truck. Making homemade popsicles is a fun, kid-friendly activity.

SPICED GRAPE POPSICLES

ingredients:

Makes 18 to 24

• 2 quarts Concord grape juice

• 1/2 cup sugar

• 12 whole cloves

• 4 cinnamon sticks

• 3 tablespoons whole allspice

directions:

Put all of the ingredients into a large saucepan. Bring the mixture to barely a simmer and let it cook for 30 minutes. Remove from the heat and pour the juice through a cheesecloth-lined strainer into a bowl or pitcher to remove the spices. Allow the juice to cool to room temperature, and then refrigerate until well chilled. Pour mixture into popsicle molds. Freeze until firm.

Whether your pup has the obedience of a dog show finalist, or social behavior that makes you want to play dead around others, you can develop more owner confidence with help from this expert trainer.

DOG

SOCIALIZING

“Socializing your dog is beneficial for both dogs and their owners,” says Taryn Tyler, a certified dog trainer. “It creates confidence for both dogs and owners and displaces the anxiety we feel when our dogs aren’t behaving like we want them to.”

Taryn stresses that teaching a dog to sit or stay is less about tricks and more about the relationship that builds between animal and owner. “We all love our dogs, but they can be stressful when they can’t seem to click in our home environments.

• Socializing is more than taking your dog in public. A guy can dump a bunch of mulch in your driveway and spread it, but he’s not a landscaper until he’s following a plan. When the doorbell rings or a visitor comes into the house, what’s our expectation for the dog? When we’re in public and the dog’s attention is diverted, what’s our plan to refocus them? Socialization is 99 percent working on small steps as part of a larger plan.

• Socializing isn’t about our dogs being the center of attention in public. Everyone loves seeing a dog, but our best outcome for the dog is to go unnoticed. Sitting by our side, ignoring external stimuli, remaining calm—those are things we strive for when socializing a dog.

• When socializing dogs with other dogs, start small. Take a walk with another dog to get them to just exist in the same vicinity. Once they’re able to not be excited by the other dog, work on limited playing in controlled environments.

• If someone comes into your home, let them know what boundaries you’re working on with your dog. You can even suggest asking them to carry a few treats and work on some of the behaviors your dog is already comfortable with.

HOW TO THROW A BIRTHDAY BASH FOR YOUR FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS:

Once your dog is able to socialize with other pets, playdates are a great way to encourage good play behavior. One way to celebrate your pup’s birthday is to celebrate with their favorite furry friends. Here are a few helpful tips for making your gathering a success.

• Set up play areas for your furry guests to enjoy. This can include a doggy pool or splash pad, chew toys, frisbees, and don’t forget the pet-friendly bubbles.

• Offer party guests birthday attire such as a birthday hat, bandana or party outfit. Set up a photo wall for pet owners to get photos with their furry friends in their birthday outfits. Better yet, make it a costume competition, and invite guests to come dressed up ready to show off their pup’s attire.

• Create a treat display with a pet-friendly birthday cake and various chewy snacks for guests to give their pups.

• Party favors are a must to end your festivities with a bang. Fill party bags with bouncy balls, treats, and pet-friendly bubbles to send your guests off with a smile.
