Welcome to our Love Local Issue Hello neighbors. With the holidays behind us, our February issue is dedicated to Love Local. We celebrate the uniqueness of our community and the creative people that call it home. As you read about our talented locals and their stories of passion and creativity, we hope you’re inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. With a hectic schedule it's easy to let our passions and talents fall by the wayside. We just have to be deliberate about allowing ourselves time to pour into hobbies and interests. So while you fill your home with chocolates, flowers and valentines, remember to give yourself some time to do what you love. Find what makes you feel alive, and don’t forget to share it with us. Thank you for inviting us into your home and lives, we can't wait to see you around town. Love local, live local, and spend locally. Until next month... A Man After God’s Own Heart

B ACK STAGE | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S
Jonathan Young at the age of 29, has traveled the world pursuing his passions and working diligently to leave the world behind a better place. Young, perhaps most famously known for his role on Survivor 42, also holds the Guinness World Record for the most pull-ups with 100 lbs on his back. The up-and-coming celebrity local had quite a lot to say during our time around the fire at his Gulf Shores home. Meeting Johnathan for the first time can feel intimidating as the 6’4, 250 lb man seemingly towers over everyone around him. Looks, as we all know can be quite deceiving and this gentle giant definitely wins the award for southern charm, chivalry, and manners. “Welcome,” he says as he smiles big and pulls out wood for the fire and makes available a place to sit and gather around together. He reaches out to shake my hand that pales in comparison to the size and stature of his own. Watching Johnathan interact with our team for his photo-shoot spoke volumes about his character and ability to adapt to ever-changing situations. His uncanny ability to hurl axes, tomahawks, and spears into small targets, attests to his abilities displayed on Survivor 42. Johnathan prides himself on what it means to be a servant after God’s own heart, taking care of those around him, and takes seriously his role as a provider. “All I want is to hear is, job well done my good and faithful servant, when I leave this world” Young says. “I am Perfectly Imperfect.” Young, originally from Gadsden Alabama, relocated to Gulf Shores many years ago. He manages a beach services rental business for chairs, umbrellas, & canopies. His rise to local stardom came after Survivor 42 aired, but make no mistake about it; Johnathan
doesn’t consider himself famous. The humble Gulf Shores local likes to keep things simple and spends majority of his time doing what he considers normal “local” things such as soaking up the sun out on the beach near Cotton Bayou or by the Jetties rocks. He regularly practices his strengths working to refine them by keeping in shape at the local gym, spear fishing, surfing, and swimming. Young says “fame doesn’t last,” but “spreading God’s love is eternal.” Young became very candid when talking about his mission trips and plans to travel in the near future to help those less fortunate. “When I was on Survivor, I had the opportunity to get really clear about what was important to me in life. Out there, you don’t have distractions like you do in the modern world. There are no cell phones, social media, or things to keep you distracted. You’re forced to face yourself and prioritize what’s really most important.” For Young, what became most important to him was incredibly clear. “All I wanted to do was take care of my tribe as a provider, a hunter-gatherer, and God filled man. Sitting out on the beach sometimes in the evening before dark, you could hear the wind rustling through the tree’s. There were some real moments during that time that I could feel God’s presence and it was a very humbling experience. My weakness at times came from a lack of food but God was able to sustain me and help keep me focused.” At the end of Survivor 42, Young was eventually voted off. The local has no hard feelings about it and hopes that in the future he can do more with Survivor. Until that time comes, he has no plans to slow down. Young spends the majority of winter CONTINUED >

months during the slow season here along the Gulf, to pursue other passions and opportunities abroad. “I like to travel a lot,” Young says. This time of the year I’m able to visit places around the world and spend time with those I care about. Mission trips are in the works for me. “It’s time for me to keep going and doing all that I can. When I think about my life, I think about leaving this world one day on empty. My greatest fear is knowing that I could do more and not

have completed it. Not living my best life, so I’ve made the decision to do just that. Living my best life. Serving others.” Young says his mentor, Lex Luger, parents, and siblings help to hold him accountable and guide him through life. “They are my biggest supporters and mentors,” Young says. “Lex, is a man that not only mentors me physically but spiritually as well. I love that guy.” Johnathan Young is an extraordinary up-and-coming loved local.

lettuce change your mind about produce
ARTICLE BY LILLIAN TAYLOR PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATE HUDSON
A MISSION OF LOVE
Stefano and Vitina Feo had no idea when they started the journey of importing extra virgin olive oil straight from their family farm in Italy to America that it would change their lives and the lives of others, forever; but it did. For over 20 years the couple has called Baldwin County home, traveling all over the United States to educate, market, and sell their precious commodities. Last year, the couple who regularly frequented the Coastal Alabama Farmers Market for local produce had a chance encounter that would ultimately shift their business in a direction the couple had never imagined. The couple procured a hydroponic farm and began growing lettuce as novice farmers. While they admit the learning curve has been steep, they are now

capable of growing 6,000 heads of lettuce per month at their Loxley, AL location. Customers began pairing the fresh, clean, and local lettuce with their olive oil and magic began to happen. Sales for their locally grown lettuce weren’t the only thing skyrocketing. The couple began selling their oils, pastas, and Italy based whole food products on Amazon and watched the world respond. Review after review, the couple realized that customers were increasingly interested in high quality food and food products. Their goal in 2023 is to expand and meet the demand of locally needed farm

fresh produce. Bridging the gap of farm to table is their way of giving back to the community and connecting others. The high standards that the dynamic duo have for their Lettuce Heads operation is simple. “Our produce is non-gmo, no pesticides, no herbicides, and nutrient dense. We live by the rule of whatever we do, we strive to do it excellently. We want to serve our community by giving the best. To really love something or someone is to know that when you give your best you are serving others, when you give something that is mediocre, you’re being selfish. We know how important our health and healthy whole foods are, it’s what we live by, and it’s what we want to share with others. Health starts at home with food.” The Lettuce Heads Farm produce can be found weekly at the Coastal Alabama Farmers Market. Customers may also pick up from their Gulf Shores office. The Gulf Coast is known for it’s beauty and those who call it home are no different. Beautifully gifted in their artistic abilities, this month we are featuring three of our local loves in the art arena, showcasing their unique works and perspectives. Whether you’re looking for a one-ofa-kind art piece that makes a statement, tells a story, or wears beautifully to capture a moment, we know that you’ll love them as much as we do. Art is much more than decoration, it’s a way of life along the gulf coast. From their initial creations and varied backgrounds, their innate ability to capture the world through their artistic medium offers it’s owners a glimpse into another world. As you walk along our beautiful, white sandy beaches consider that someone you now know, has taken the time and placed great effort into raising ecological awareness. Whether you’re buying, building, or decorating, we invite you to peruse the artwork and pops of coastal color that spring passion, peace, and persona into your living space. Out for dinner on the town or simply looking for the perfect gift? We offer you an opportunity to get to know our artists by indulging in a unique statement piece. These artists are sure to put a smile on your face. Each artist is as unique as the fingerprints on your hand. Sandra Krause, an evolving warm glass artist and jewelry maker. J.D. Swiger & Michael Swiger, digital and mixed media artists, offering education and evolution through sculptures of transforming trash found along our beaches into treasure and mural artists. And Crawford McWilliams, utilizing her passion for pops of color and creations of calm that showcase interior design delicacies. We love their artworks and are sure that you will too!

She found her passion in working with Warm Glass. “Warm glass became a passion of mine rather unexpectedly and I embraced it.” Her studio became a haven for her to expand and to begin making warm glass art. As a mostly self taught artist her works range from water colors, jewelry making, and warm glass works. The desire to create has always been there for her. Growing as an artist and within the art community has allowed her talents to develop naturally. Creating unique and elegant art pieces offers those a window into her world.

materials of opportunity Leaving a Legacy of Love & Plenty of Fish ARTICLE BY LILLIAN TAYLOR | PHOTOG R APHY BY DE RE K KE LLE R
David Walter is a pioneer in changing the game of fishing along the Gulf Coast and leaving a lasting legacy for generations to come. Alabama’s artificial reef program is as unique as the man who continues to create it. David shares in his book Reef Making, that the northern Gulf of Mexico has no natural reef system like those found in the Florida Keys, Cancun, Belize and other tropical areas.
26
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | AU TO + MARI NE
David began with intentions on rebuilding the fishing community during the late 80’s and early 90’s, but later found himself with more need than he imagined. Utilizing what he calls “materials of opportunity,” he thrives on the ability to reduce, reuse, and revamp our artificial reef systems from “junk” which in turn has helped to create a robust fishing community. Alabama is one of the few states that allows private businesses to develop artificial reefs within a specific radius. David and his team have created an emphasis on custom-designed artificial reefs made from a mixture of limestone and concrete. As a life long fisherman himself, his friends and colleagues tried numerous items before patenting his current reef models. After the 2010 BP oil spill, David and his team were one of the only businesses capable of rebuilding the fishing industry and providing artificial reefs while working to repair the damage along The Gulf Coast. The reefs that David and his team assemble come in several different shapes and sizes, some would even be surprised to know that his company offers memorial reefs for loved ones. “It’s a great way to give someone a memorial who loved The Gulf and fishing. People put all kinds of things on it in memory of their loved ones and it gives back to the marine life. We take people out all the time to set it out, it’s an emotional experience, very moving. It’s something they can come back to time and time again.” David is so passionate and committed to the reefs that he wrote and published Reef Making in 2019. The book gives his detailed account of the history and process of creating artificial reefs. It can be found on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other book sale websites.

CREATING CULTURE & COMMUNITY THROUGH ART Ballyhoo Fine Art & Cultural Exchange ARTICLE BY LILLIAN TAYLOR | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELOISE THOMLEY
Ballyhoo is just around the corner and preparing for it’s 9th annual year of promoting fine art and cultural exchange. Presented by the Gulf Coast Arts Alliance, Ballyhoo was created to enhance the interest and knowledge of cultural events while raising funds that are used to support the non-profit in their efforts to expand arts in coastal Alabama. Partnering with the Poarch Creek Pow Wow Club, Ballyhoo enhances the historical narrative and includes tribal dancers in traditional ceremonial regalia. Artists from all over the United States ranging in mediums, textiles, wood crafting, metal, and hand created items such as basket weaving, pottery, jewelry, and charcoal are found throughout the festival. Family friendly, this event offers children’s art in the “Kid’s Korner,” where volunteers from various artistic backgrounds assist children in creating their own works of art. Demonstrators can be
