Welcome to our Gratitude Issue Hello neighbors, In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. As we celebrate our 15th issue, it is a significant milestone and I am filled with gratitude. Creating a community lifestyle magazine has been a dream of mine. After an 18 month battle with breast cancer, I started working on making my dream a reality. So this is much more than a job for me, it's a leap of faith that came to fruition. It's my passion project and your support has been instrumental in helping me achieve it. Thank you. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. We are thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our Island the vibrant community that it is. THE HEROISM OF JAKOB BAGWELL

Jakob Bagwell, a devoted family man and Marine veteran, is the epitome of a reliable individual when it comes to critical situations. Working his routine day took an unexpected turn when a vacationing woman and her family fell victim to a flying beach umbrella. Bagwell commenced his shift with no inkling of the events that would soon unfold. A woman, enjoying her vacation with loved ones, found herself in a precarious situation when a beach umbrella was catapulted towards her by a gust of wind. The sudden impact left her incapacitated, prompting immediate action from Bagwell, who swiftly recognized the urgency of the situation. Rob Tarr, Facility Director for Phoenix West II stated “We are blessed to have Bagwell assigned to Phoenix West II to provide security that Severance offers. Bagwell is a tremendous leader for his team and we couldn’t be more thankful to have him here. When we got the call, Bagwell sprinted to the scene. Since he carries emergency supplies with him at all times, when he arrived on the scene he was already able to begin administering aid. I had no idea he could run that fast.”

With a military background and an ingrained instinct to protect, Bagwell wasted no time. Applying his training, he assessed the situation and quickly determined the necessary course of action. Bagwell stabilized the injured woman, until medical professionals arrived. His ability to remain composed in the face of chaos was instrumental in providing much-needed support during those critical moments. Bagwell’s selfless act of heroism is not an isolated incident but rather a reflection of his character. A dedicated family man, his commitment to safeguarding the well-being of others knows no bounds. Bagwells’s background as a Marine has undoubtedly shaped his ability to remain level-headed under pressure. These skills, honed through rigorous training, transferred into his civilian life, enabling him to respond effectively in emergencies. Bagwell’s commitment to serving others extends beyond his professional responsibilities into his family and community life. A father, husband, and Volunteer firefighter for the Town of Silverhill, the far-reaching consequences of Bagwell’s actions cannot be understated. The woman and her family, traumatized by the unexpected incident, found solace in Bagwell’s swift response and support. The woman was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment and later released, she is expected to recover fully. “It was just one of those freak accidents you know? I was in the right place at the right time. I also have to thank and give a huge shout out to the Orange Beach Fire Department. They were amazing. They had to cut the umbrella off of her leg while keeping it intact so that they could transport her to the hospital. Everyone here did exactly what they were trained to do.”

Bagwell’s heroism serves as a reminder to us all that even in the most ordinary circumstances, unexpected events can occur. Bagwell’s quick thinking, compassion, and dedication to the well-being of others exemplify the qualities we admire in true heroes. This story reminds us of the importance of being prepared and ready to act when minutes truly matter. The Christian Service Center serves as a beacon of hope and assistance for those in need in our coastal area. Coming up in November is the annual charity gala, Toys for Kids, held at the Perdido Beach Resort. Wildflowers Boutique aims to raise funds to support the Christian Service Center’s mission. This captivating event promises an enchanting evening of elegance, compassion, and community support. Toys for Kids is not just a fundraising event; it’s an experience that leaves a lasting impact. Attendees can look forward to a night of passion where the spirit of giving comes to life. The event features a cocktail reception, a sumptuous dinner, an exciting silent auction, and an opportunity to dance the night away. Every aspect of the evening has been carefully crafted to create a memorable experience for all. The Christian Service Center, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit, supports those in need. By participating in this memorable event, attendees directly contribute to the Christian Service Center’s mission of providing assistance to those in need within the Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, and Fort Morgan area. The funds raised through the charity event go towards supporting individuals and families struggling with financial burdens, providing them with access to food, and other essential resources. One main focus of The Toys for Kids Charity Gala is the children’s programs including the Christmas cheer program, backpack program, and more. ANGELS IN THE INFIELD

THE NAVY FLIGHT DEMONSTRATION SQUADRON, THE BLUE ANGELS, PRIDES THEMSELVES ON WHAT THEY GIVE BACK On most Tuesdays and Wednesdays in Pensacola, there is one sound residents can pretty much set their watches on. The sound of the Blue Angels’ flight practice demonstrations over the city and beach. Locals head outside, or flock to local open parking lots, to catch the practice air shows each week. However, while many feel the Blue Angels are most impressive while demonstrating incredibly difficult flight maneuvers, it is actually what they do at ground level that bring them the most satisfaction – giving back to the community, meeting fans, and helping to inspire the next generation to be the best they can be in all that they do. Each year, the Blue Angels interact with over 11 million spectators through air show performances and have flown for more than 450 million spectators worldwide. Additionally, the Blue Angels visit multiple schools and

hospitals, and attend community outreach events in every city they travel to. While public outreach is part of the mission, the distinct ability to make a meaningful impact on others is written into the Blue Angel creed and into the hearts of members on the team. The Blue Angels give their teammates an incredible platform to bring about awareness of the awesome power, precision, and teamwork of the military, while also inspiring millions of people to pursue their dreams and become better versions of themselves. “It would be impossible to quantify the hours this team volunteers their time locally and across the nation each year, and honestly, we aren’t counting,” said Chief Mass Communication Specialist Michael Russell, the team’s volunteer coordinator. From high school engagements to hospital visits, from beach and highway cleanups to reading to children in the library, an Angel in Blue can be found. While community engagement is part of the job, the Blues have let it become their way of life. Cdr. John Fay, the team’s executive officer, who has been with the team for two years, said it is the selfless heart of the team that has stood out and fascinated him. “We occupy a unique position that provides a very special opportunity to interact with people from across the nation,” said Fay. “That fact is not lost on any of us and it is part of the “why” we do what we do.” Fay said this unique position also provides the necessary motivation to get through the tough days and Lt. Cmdr. Julius Bratton, #5 solo pilot and the team’s operations officer, agrees. “We are fortunate that volunteering goes hand in hand with this job,” said Bratton. “In being a Blue Angel, our outreach efforts are intertwined into our regular schedule. We are truly blessed to be healthy and able to put a smile on someone else’s face.” Both as a team and as individuals, the Blue Angels pride themselves on development and the pursuit of perfection. The team is transparent during the interview stage about what will be expected of each member, and if at any time a member of the team feels like it is not a fit, they can request to be transferred off the team. But this rarely happens. “Glad to be here is a statement of belief that we share on the Blue Angels team,” said Fay. “It reflects gratitude for the unique position we occupy, serving a purpose larger than ourselves.” The team consists of 138 world class, active duty, Sailors, and Marines, each one bringing experience and expertise from their service in the fleet and honored to serve as the representatives of the more than 800,000 active duty reserve and civilian men and women currently serving worldwide in the Navy Marine Corps. In the wake of Hurricane Sally, one woman’s compassion and determination sparked a movement that has touched the lives of countless individuals in need. Lori Keelin, founder of Blessed to Blessing Boxes and Hey Farms, has become a beacon of hope in Baldwin County and beyond. Through her selfless efforts and the support of an incredible community, Keelin has created a network of Blessing Boxes and partnered with local charities and businesses to provide essential items to those facing hardship. Her story is one of resilience, empathy, and a call to action for us all to make a difference in our local community. It all began with one simple mission: To give those in need what they truly needed. After Hurricane Sally left devastation in its wake, Keelin recognized that the community needed more than just food assistance. She saw the need for hygiene items, baby supplies, and other essential necessities that often go overlooked during times of crisis. With an unwavering determination to make a difference, Keelin created her first Blessing Box at The Rac in Robertsdale, AL. The concept behind the Blessing Boxes is beautifully simple yet powerful. These boxes, which can be found throughout Baldwin County and parts of Florida, are entirely volunteer based. People in need can discreetly take what they require, and those who have excess are encouraged to donate. The Blessing Boxes not only provide immediate relief but also foster a sense of community and compassion among neighbors. Since its humble beginnings, Blessed to Blessing Boxes has grown exponentially, thanks to the unwavering support of our caring community. The determination and dedication have resulted in hundreds of boxes across the county. Keelin’s vision for Blessed to Blessing Boxes extends beyond simply providing essential items. She believes

However, amidst this challenging situation, a heartwarming story of hope and selflessness emerged. Loyd and Lynda Brookshire, a couple battling kidney failure, received a second chance at life when their friend and fellow businessman, Josh Hall, selflessly donated his kidney to them. Undergoing a kidney transplant is an intricate and delicate process, but with the support and expertise of the medical team, Loyd successfully received the life-altering transplant. The surgery not only brought immediate relief to his body but also infused a renewed sense of hope and gratitude into their lives. Loyd Brookshire is now thriving, no longer confined by kidney failure, and he and his family are eternally grateful for the miracle of transplantation. Cranberry Relish A Thanksgiving Recipe Infused with Gratitude

As Thanksgiving approaches we wanted to share with you one of our favorite recipes from Chef Pan. This seasonal, vibrant, and fresh as can be Cranberry sauce is sure to be a favorite hit among your friends and family. To prepare this vibrant and fresh Cranberry Relish follow the directions as below:

INGREDIENTS: • • • •

1LB Fresh Cranberries 1/4 Cup Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice 1/4 Cup 100 % Cranberry Juice 1 Cup Honey

DIRECTIONS: 01. Wash the cranberries and discard any that are soft or wrinkled. Combine the orange juice, cranberry juice and honey in a 2 quart saucepan over medium-high heat. 02. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 5 minutes. Add the cranberries and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries burst and the mixture thickens. Do not cook for more than 15 minutes as the pectin will start to break down and the sauce will not set as well.

03. Remove from the heat and allow to cool for 5 minutes. Carefully spoon the cranberry sauce into a 3 cup mold. Place in the refrigerator for at least 6 hours and up to overnight. Chef says Thanksgiving is his favorite holiday. “My gratitude and being of service is my life and core value, and it’s a way of life. I have been offering Thanksgiving for families for 9 years.” He says “It allows them to spend time with their family and friends vs. cooking. For me, that equals gratitude.” Chef Pan is the executive chef for Orange Beach Concierge & The Pantry at The Wharf.
