Hey y’all, here comes fall…
With the changing of seasons comes a change in what we are craving, and with fall that often means comfort food. October is our most delectable issue of the year, filled with some of our favorite dishes and beverages around the Island.
We had the pleasure of sitting down with local chefs, proprietors, and wine experts all over our community. They let us into their world so that we may bring it to your living room. Now that tourist season has slowed, it’s time to get out and try our local restaurants, wine bars, caterers, and food-trucks.
The smells of fall bring memories to my mind sitting in my grand-mére’s kitchen, watching her culinary prowess in action. She was the first fusion chef in my life. Mixing classic French with Acadian Gulf Coast cuisine. Some of my favorites: Gumbo, Spinach Madeline, Crawfish Étoufée, Coq au Vin, and the very labor-intensive Crawfish Bisque. I also learned about climatology and humidity in her kitchen. She would never make her famous pralines or pecan divinity unless it was dry and cool outdoors, or the pecan treats wouldn’t “set” properly. She taught me patience in her kitchen.
There is an art to creating a flavorful dish that not only satisfies our taste buds but evokes memories. The aroma of certain spices and foods can bring us right back to our childhood, which can be incredibly powerful and comforting. Food brings us all together, and whether we are sharing a meal with loved ones or enjoying a night out on the town, the time spent while enjoying food is invaluable.

With nearly nine years of experience in the wine industry, Winston McQuitery has truly immersed himself in the world of wine. His love for wine extends beyond his job, as he occasionally hosts wine dinners and tastings to stay connected with his roots.
When it comes to selecting wines, McQuitery prioritizes appellation over producer. Understanding that each region imparts unique characteristics to the grapes, he believes that knowing the appellation provides a sense of assurance even if a familiar producer is unavailable. This approach allows him to explore different wines from the same region, broadening his and his customers’ horizons.
Translating the sensory experience of wine into written descriptions that resonate with customers is an art McQuitery has mastered. He simplifies complex wine terms, using relatable descriptions instead of industry jargon. By focusing on flavors and aromas that people can easily identify, he creates accessible descriptions that engage wine enthusiasts.

Every time I make something, I learn something.” As a military wife, she has always found solace in the kitchen, creating delicious meals for her family and friends. Balancing motherhood, ambition, and managing a household is no easy feat, but Lowry’s dedication and determination know no bounds. She sees each challenge as an opportunity to grow and learn. “My husband and family are my greatest supporters. I’ve heard people say that you can’t have it all, but we do. Communication is key. I could not be where I am today without the support of my husband and family.”
