LIFESTYLE LETTER

Love Local The Arts Love Local celebrates the businesses and people in Grosse Pointe who help create this world-class community. We share in each other's experiences and build loyal bonds with business owners who sacrifice to create the unique Grosse Pointe experience. In our February issue, we journeyed into the local art scene and some people behind it. Art can be experienced in many ways, and whether traditional or non-traditional, it adds depth and appreciation to our lives and the people and places around us. My daughter Mia is a highly talented performer, artist, and writer. When I asked what Art means, she replied, "Art tells us a story. What it means to one person can be different to another." She expanded, "If I write a poem or perform a song, the meaning behind the work is subjective to each person. Everyone has a different story and their own unique human experience in how they internalize Art in all its forms." Local artist Will Schippert took his passion for learning and creating Art inspired by the natural beauty of Grosse Pointe into a thriving digital and oilbased art business. Driven partly by necessity, he ignited a relentless pursuit of creating Art more beautiful than reality. This multi-talented artist graces our cover and tells us his story. Lifestyle photographer Kim Rensburg enjoys putting people at ease to make them look their best. Whether working with business clients on products or with families looking to capture moments, Kim brings an eye for photography that showcases an incredible talent. She also advises aspiring photographers on the importance of lighting and when nature provides the "golden hours" of photography. Local business owner Betsy Rossman of The Lon Next Door Salon & Spa teamed up with the owner of Part of Your World Disney Princess Co, Sofia Kirkman. They bring the perfect combination of Disney princess-themed parties and events for children. Discover the possibilities and how a salon experience can bring out the kid in all of us. Enjoy our February stories, and remember, we all have the ability inside of us to create. Let's celebrate the arts.

LOCAL ARTIST SEES ART DIFFERENTLY ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY WILL SCHIPPERT

Will Schippert

“Art is therapeutic and we cannot live without beauty.” When COVID hit, Will Schippert of Grosse Pointe was at a loss – literally. It ruined his entertainment business, and he feared losing his home. "The only thing I could control was the digital art (altering photos) hobby I had started making the prior November," he says. He not only found it therapeutic, but the hours spent on these projects led to significant improvements in the quality of his art and provided him with a fountain of new ideas. So, what started out as a devastating situation actually became a blessing. "I wouldn't be an artist if it wasn't for the pandemic," he says. Even before COVID, Will was drawn to art. "Back in 1997, I taught myself how to paint with oil by recreating Van Gogh paintings from a book after I became obsessed with his usage of thick paint," he says. "Although I never took a painting Page 1: Let the Sky Fall

class, I continued to do oil and watercolor Van Gogh reprints in college." This past November, he bought an easel and became determined to take his talent to a higher level. "I really started trying to master wet-on-wet oil painting techniques," says Will. Now, his inspiration is to try to make every piece better than reality. "I'm inspired by new ideas, a new perspective, beautiful and interesting subject matters, trying to make the most beautiful thing I've ever created, and creating something important. I only work on subject matter I care about because I couldn't do it without passion." He describes his style, both digital and oil, as recognizable because trees are typically the focal point and/or a significant part of his compositions. "I'm most influenced by Van Gogh, Sisley, Cezanne, Monet, Matisse and Pissarro for different CONTINUED > FEB R UARY 2 0 2 4 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/GRO S S E P O I N T E

reasons and have Wong in the back of my mind when trying to be a minimalist, which doesn't come naturally to me." When working with oil paints, Will primarily uses thick paint with pure colors straight from the tube that are applied quickly with a small brush to create visible patch brush strokes. He has a genuine love of landscapes. "I rarely include people in my art because I believe it's a distraction to the viewer, who likely doesn't want anyone else in their experience," says Will. "I also exclude unnecessary stimuli as I don't want to create useless distractions. I lighten and change shadows and anything that detracts from the rest of the image. I don't ever use black paint and try to make every brush stroke look intentional so it's beautiful up close and from afar, and I paint it with the intention that it will be in bright light. You can almost see and feel the art being more than two dimensional - something that looks like stained glass in the right light." He doesn't want to be pigeonholed into any one style though. "I believe growing is necessary and comes from pursuing new ideas and challenging myself every day." Will is currently working on 4 x 2-foot wood panels in portrait perspective, believing that they will fill spaces better than trying to cram panoramic art into a portrait-shaped space. "This avoids the

need to place a table below your art to create balance in the space, and it allows for art in a perspective not often seen, but perfect for capturing the length of tall trees." He enjoys incorporating technology for his digital art, which originates from photos he has taken. "I've created multiple proprietary techniques to alter the photos," he says. And like his oil paintings, he's influenced by the same artists. "I pushed each color and contrast as far as possible without becoming absurd. There really is nothing I won't do with digital art to get what I want, and that kind of freedom makes anything possible and eliminates all constraints." Will, who also served in the U.S. Marine Corps, enjoys being a part of the local art scene and encourages others to get to know the artists in their communities. "It will make the piece you buy from them even more special," he says. "Someone like Posterity Gallery owner, Michelle Boggess-Nunley, is doing all the right things to bring the best artists to her shop for monthly exhibitions." "Art is therapeutic, and we cannot live without beauty," says Will. "Invite art into your life that speaks to you and will open your eyes to the transcendent. When you connect to the transcendent, your life will benefit in ways that cannot be achieved through your crypto wallet, stocks or bonds." CONTINUED >

Places to see Will Schippert’s artistic works: On our magazine cover: His oilon-wood painting of Good Art is featured. “Reminiscent of post-impressionism, I used color, line and form to capture my response to the light and night shadows at Windmill Pointe Park’s marina. Like a heart, the name is a play on how the lamp lights up the space.” Posterity Gallery: Art show, along with fellow artist, Angelo Sherman, will be held from February 9 - 29. MAKING THE MOST WITH NATURE

Photography ARTICLE BY ROBERT MUSIAL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KIM RENSBURG

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | ARTS + CU LT U RE

Kim Rensburg seems like a natural behind the camera, whether she’s switching lenses on her Nikon or working with clients. It’s an interest she’s had since she was a student at Marian High School in Bloomfield Hills. But she didn’t act on it until after college. “In 2013, I took a photography class in my early 20s when we were in Chicago and things sort of went from there,” said Rensburg, who now lives in Grosse Pointe Farms with her husband Paul, her young son, Noah, and their pug, Javier. While her parents hoped she would be a business major, Rensburg decided to explore her artistic side. “But they won, too, because now, I’m a business owner with my own photography business,” she said. After taking photo classes and acquiring some gear, she decided that was what she wanted to do as a career. “My husband said, ‘OK, it’s time to recoup some of this investment,” she laughed. She started small, working with family and friends and building client referrals and relationships. She said she soon learned that Chicago was “a saturated market” for photographers. The family’s move to Michigan gave her the boost she needed to recreate her photography business here. As part of the product photography side of her business, she recently did several days of cooking videos, showing a client’s products being used to make chili to share on their website. She can do such product work, whether a large object or something that could fit on a tabletop, perhaps an item people could picture in their homes. She’s been known to take multiple shots of a product with different backgrounds or settings so the client can show a fresh product online at different times of the year. CONTINUED >

“For a business owner, it’s showing their brand, product, and business, as well as who they are behind the business. People want to buy from those they feel they know and trust,” she said. She also does a lot of formal and informal portraiture. “A lot of that is putting people at ease, but you have to prepare for that,” she said. This involves consulting them beforehand to decide what they’re looking for. “I always want to make people feel comfortable. I spend a lot of time getting to know my clients upfront. Once we get to know each other, we start working together,” she said. “I want to put people at ease and make them look their best,” she said. She mainly works out of her clients’ homes or offices, though she’s looking to open a small studio someday. And she realizes that almost everybody with a cell phone these days takes pictures. “The one thing I say is phones offer great portability, but the important thing is knowing how to use the right light when taking photos,” she said.

26

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | ARTS + CU LT U RE

She prefers to work primarily with natural light in her job, so she offered these simple tips to aspiring photographers. “If the sun or window is right behind the subject, they will be backlit, and their face will be in a shadow. Turn around and let that beautiful light fall on their face. But know that bright light can also cast harsh shadows, so you don’t want that, either,” she said. For that reason, she often prefers to work in what she called “the golden hours” – soon after sunrise or one hour before sunset when the light is softer. When shooting a family, she notes, “that may be harder on the kids, but the photos will be better.” Rensburg can also help portrait clients coordinate their outfits. “Neutral colors work best -- tans, light cream or grey. It reflects the light while patterns tend to fill up the frame,” she said. “I’m going for lifestyle photography, what I call ‘candid styling,’ not like Vogue magazine. I want to make them look authentic. I may give them prompts but to create that moment, to go for the natural reaction that shows their relationship,” she said. If asked, she also shoots on location. Some of her favorite spots for that are Belle Isle and the RiverWalk in Detroit, Pier Park in the Farms, Patterson Park in Grosse Pointe Park, and Kirk in the Hills in Bloomfield Township. As for photos around Valentine’s Day, she suggests styling them with hearts, candy or chocolates “or the kids making and showing off their Valentines.” Right now, Rensburg says she’s taking many engagement and anniversary photos. “And here’s a really fun gift idea – for moms never in the photos. Gift her with a photo session,” she said. – Check out www.kimberlyrensburg. com for more information. CONTINUED >

TEN REASONS TO CONVINCE YOU ABOUT BRANDING PHOTOGRAPHY 1. In the digital age we live in, photos are often the first impression people get. Having beautiful brand images is necessary to make a great first impression, and that really matters. 2. No matter what you do, you need to communicate who you are. Whether it’s on your website, LinkedIn, marketing materials or even your dating profile, professional headshots allow you to be yourself and stand out. 3. For business owners (both big and small), it’s important to establish your brand image. Showing “the person behind the business” will make your company more relatable to potential clients. 4. Photography is a quick, reliable way to get your brand messaging across without ever needing words. 5. It’s vital to have consistency between your website and social media platforms. That consistency builds trust. 6. Professional branding photography adds inherent value. It shows you’re a brand that cares about the image they present. 7. Having warm, natural branding photos is inviting to any prospective client or employer. That’s why I bring lifestyle photography into branding photos! 8. Branding sessions bring the products from your business to life! I focus on natural light product imagery that reflects your brand image. 9. Brand photos reinvigorate your business and connect you with the audience you’re trying to reach (aka your “dream client”!). 10. Branding photography is fun! During our session, I can guarantee you’ll feel confident, laugh a lot, and leave our session excited to share your talents with the world.

o time or budget to go to Walt Disney World in Florida? That’s okay. Children can now have a Disney experience right here in Grosse Pointe. The Lon Next Door Salon & Spa and Part of Your World Princess Co. have teamed up to bring together spa experiences and beloved princesses for a memorable party or event. For birthdays and other special private occasions, a princess of the child’s choice visits anywhere from two to four hours, and during that time, the guest of honor and her friends are given the royal treatment.

“We perform services like manicures, hair braiding, glitterlites, face painting, and facial classes,” says The Lon owner Betsy Rossman. She also has different princesses come in for other special spa events such as Halloween celebrations, Winter Wonderland festivities, and customer appreciation days. “We recommend Princess parties for ages 3 to 6, but truly all ages can take part and enjoy the magic!,” says Sofia Kirkman, owner of Part of Your World Princess Co. “Each child gets to take part in our individual coronation ceremony (including a tiara keepsake to take home) as well as interactive story times, Princess lessons, individual photo opportunities, and Pixie Dust Wishes.”

There are ten different Princesses from which to choose – Elsa and Anna are the most requested - as well as a few non-Princess characters like Barbie. “Most parents can dabble in their own self-care services while their kids are enjoying themselves,” says Betsy. “This is the kind of experience you can’t get anywhere outside of the Disney parks, and we are so glad to be able to bring this special memory to families right here in Grosse Pointe,” says Sofia. Parents can book events for 10 to 15 children by calling The Lon at 313-882-6240. TheLonNextDoor.com PartofYourWorldPrincessCo.com
