November Giving Thanks In this season of giving thanks, we often reflect on the many blessings in our lives. Thankful Parade FOR THE

The Parade Company is gearing up for its spectacular 2023 America's Thanksgiving Parade® presented by Gardner White. Last year, the event was named the 2022 Best Holiday Parade in the country by USA Today, which probably doesn't surprise the over 1 million people who line up on Woodward Avenue each year to enjoy the floats, balloons, marching bands, dance teams, big heads and more. "We have a whole lot of floats, which we build right here at The Parade Company in Detroit," says its president and CEO, Tony Michaels. "We have 26 floats that are 130 feet long and take three to four months to build. We also have 200 big heads, the largest collection in the world, of cartoon characters and famous people of Detroit." Of course, while some of these big heads will be part of this enormous two-hour parade, others will be displayed at the Grosse Pointe Parade down Kercheval Avenue. "There are also a couple of floats that go to Grosse Pointe, including the Jazz Fest float for the Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe," he says. The 97th America's Thanksgiving Parade starts at the Detroit Institute of Arts at 8:45 am, November 23, and is broadcast live on WDIV, Local 4, streamed live on ClickOnDetroit.com, and narrated CONTINUED >

on WOMC. It is syndicated in 185 cities across the country. Past grand marshals have included Tim Allen, Jim Leyland, and Jessica Simpson. America's Thanksgiving Parade, first known as The Michigan Thanksgiving Parade, was first held in 1926. The Parade Company is the marketing and operating division of The Michigan Thanksgiving Parade Foundation and was founded in 1982. As a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization, The Michigan Thanksgiving Parade Foundation receives its funding through corporate sponsorships, foundations, and individual donations. It does not get any local, state, or federal appropriations. So, it is always in need of financial and volunteer support. In addition to its incredible staff of 17, The Parade Company also has a volunteer corps of 1,500. Pulling off this ultra-successful event takes a lot of people and support. "This parade is the heart and soul of this city, region, and state," says Tony. "It's hard to explain what this means to the generations who have come to this parade and stood in the same spot as their great-grandfathers, grandfathers, and parents. Our presenting sponsor, Gardner White, has re-upped through 2031, which is unheard of. That's how strong our support is in this community." Before the parade, the company also puts on the Strategic Staffing Solutions Turkey Trot, a 10k/5k/1 mile race on Woodward Ave, which has been a tradition in Detroit for over 40 years. Thousands of people participate and often dress in colorful and fun costumes. It's often called the Parade before the Parade. The Parade Company also produces a variety of other shows, including the stunning Ford Fireworks display (its 66th show will be on Monday, June 24, 2024) and many auxiliary fundraising and community outreach events, including the Hob Nobble Gobble®, an amazing black-tie fundraising event in collaboration with Ford with proceeds going towards the Thanksgiving Parade. "This parade is the heart and soul of this city, region, and state." This year, it will be held on Friday, November 17, 2023, at Ford Field. Here, guests can whirl around on the flying saucers, ride the waves on the giant sea ray, spin the Ferris wheel, and go aboard a spaceship for an out-of-this-world experience. For additional fun, there will be giant carnival games to play and amazing prizes to win. Guests can also enjoy the evening's famous Parade of Stars featuring dancing elves, an entertaining marching band, and, of course, the main man himself, Santa Claus, visiting all the way from the North Pole. It all ends with a special celebrity performance (it's a secret!). The company has also organized the Detroit Kickoff to Summer; the 1998, 1999, and 2002 Red Wings Victory Parades; the 1998 University of Michigan Rose Bowl Victory Parade; and the 1999 Big Balloon Parade staged in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The company has even assisted with the Centenary of Federation Parade in 2001 in Australia. "We continue to grow our events in a really big way," he says. "We have a wonderful team that really, really understands the mission. We bring people together - that's what we do. We have the largest events in the state. We are so fortunate to have the greatest sponsors and people committed to our events, and it's our job to make them bigger and better than others." Tony, who was born and raised in Grosse Pointe, became the CEO of The Parade Company in 2009 after being on the Board of Directors for over a decade. "My job was to completely improve and turn this company into something great, which it really deserves. We are now in a wonderful place." He has accomplished many of his goals and led significant growth for the company, resulting in substantial economic impact for the region. However, he says there is still much more to do. The company hopes to be in its new worldclass headquarters at the Brodhead Armory on

the Detroit River in the next two to three years. Through its Be a Heart of History campaign, it's looking to raise $45 million to accomplish this massive undertaking. "There's going to be housing for the building of the floats and our team," says Tony. "But, it will also house the summer arts and craft camps for Detroit public school kids and be an event center. It will be one great spot and a tourist destination in the city of Detroit. "The building is pretty blighted out right now, so we'll also be helping the Detroit riverfront. There's just a lot of good things about this project." Tony and his wife Clarice reside in Rochester Hills and have three grown children. He was named 2022 Michiganian of the Year by the Detroit News and received the 2022 Edward H. McNamara Goodfellow of the Year Award and the Spirit of Detroit Award from the Detroit City Council. He is on the Board of Directors for the Detroit Economic Club and Henry Ford Hospital West Bloomfield and is an advisor to non-profit organizations and business and community leaders, including the Community Foundation of Greater Rochester and the Marketing Committee of the Detroit Zoo. "Our group is so fortunate to be able to put on these events," he says. "It's people coming together shoulder to shoulder, taking in these great moments in our city, and it's our job to make them great and entertaining." While the parade is free to watch along the threemile route, special grandstand seating is also available, which must be purchased in advance. a festive pairing The age-old question, “What wine goes with turkey?” is answered. ARTICLE BY MARY ABEL

It’s a question heard every year about this time: “What are the best wines to serve with Thanksgiving dinner?” “In my early days in the wine business, the answer was pretty cut and dried because it was all based on the assumption that you had a turkey that came out of the oven that was dry, and so you’re almost guaranteed to need something with a little bit of sweetness to it to help balance that out,” James Lewis says. James is a sommelier who has been in the wine business for more than 26 years. “I’d recommend a sweet or off-dry Riesling or Gewürztraminer. Something that will help with that dry meat that you’re about to choke down.” But now, with all the ways people are preparing the big bird, he says that conversation has become a lot more interesting and fun. “People are frying turkeys, which come out really moist and delicious. They’re smoking turkeys and they’re doing them on the grill,” James says. “Now, when I’m asked that question, I always ask how the turkey is going to be cooked because any given preparation is going to call for something a little bit different. “If you’re deep frying it, it’s going to come out very moist with a fair bit of fat, so you need something that’s going to cut through that. So you can go with a dry white, you can do a dry Riesling, or you could try a French Chardonnay, which typically doesn’t have that big, rich mouthfeel that California Chardonnay would have. It’s crisper and cleaner with high acidity.” For those who prefer red wines, James says that a fried or smoked turkey can handle something a bit bolder and full-bodied. “Try something like a Pinot Noir. It’s not at all heavyhanded. When I’m talking about red wines, and

I talk about heavy-handed or big—Cabernet is big and full-bodied. I call it the linebacker of the wine world. Then you’ve got Pinot Noir, which is more about balance and elegance. So, if Cabernet is a linebacker, Pinot Noir would be the ballerina. They’re both athletes, but with different approaches to athletics, so they have different approaches to your palate. Cabernet is big, dry, and highly tannic, so you might serve a Cabernet or Malbec if you’re having a steak for Thanksgiving, but you wouldn’t want to do that with a turkey. “With a turkey,” James continues, “you want something that’s going to have a little more acidity, less tannins, and medium body; not that big mouth-filling richness. You can do a Beaujolais or an old-world Italian Sangiovese, which tends to be a very food-friendly wine.” Somewhere in between might be a soft, flirty rosé. And rosé wine seems to be having a moment. “Rosé was always thought of as a summer wine, but people are now drinking it year-round. It’s an excellent choice to go with turkey.” What about bubbles? “I almost hesitate to answer that because it’s kind of the easy answer. You can drink Champagne or sparkling with anything because of that really bright acidity. Especially if you have a fried bird, a Prosecco or sparkling wine is going to cut right through that fattiness and balance it out really nicely.” If you’re hosting a tableful of friends and family this year, James says it’s easy to bring together a collection of wines that will please the crowd. “If you do one bottle of sparkling, whether it’s white or rosé, a bottle of dry white, a bottle of rosé, and a bottle of medium-bodied red, you’ve got something to cover just about anybody’s preference.”

What if I’m serving ham this year? “Lots of people have ham for Thanksgiving, right? It’s very traditional to pair ham and Pinot. But again, you can get creative. You can do a Grenache, you can do a Beaujolais…really, any of those medium-bodied reds will be delicious. “

What about dessert? “If you’re having pumpkin pie for dessert, I would go with something like a tawny port. The spiciness of the pie combined with that kind of nuttiness and caramel notes of a tawny port? Lovely. And it would work with an apple pie as well.”

How much should I spend on a bottle of wine? “That’s kind of an impossible question to answer because wine is so incredibly subjective. That said, I’m a firm believer that there is an absolute ocean of delicious wine in that $15–$25 retail price point. It was a busy time for physical therapist John Putnam and his wife Laurie, an occupational therapist. They had just married and opened their third Back to You clinic in Grosse Pointe Woods when COVID-19 hit. A few months later, he got a Facebook invitation from a fellow physical therapist to volunteer with a group of medical professionals to help people needing medical care in Armenia. “It’s always been a dream of mine to use my skill set to do something like this,” he said. “It’s just fueled by a desire to help people.” The group was organized, arrangements were made, and, in 2021, after a 16-hour flight, their plane touched down in Armenia, a democratic nation in the mountains between Europe and Asia. Doctors, nurses, dentists, chiropractors, and other therapists, many of Armenian descent, were on the two-week mission. Overseeing the Armenian Medical Mission was Berj Apkarian, the honorary consul of the Republic of Armenia, based in Fresno, California.

“The mission is an important demonstration of support,” he said. “My gratitude goes to them for serving humanity.” The volunteers “are fantastic people, and I have a world of respect for them,” said Apkarian, who arranged interviews to publicize the mission visit and showed the volunteers a bit of what the country was like in off-hours. Once on the ground in the capital of Yerevan, the Putnams and other volunteers saw patients bussed to their clinic. They also traveled to outlying villages, seeing patients in their humble homes, some of which only had dirt floors. “They’d bring their friends and loved ones as the word grew,” said Putnam. “People would be lined up at the door and at every table, and Laurie was right there in the trenches, helping me,” he said. “They were so appreciative, they’d go home and come back with fresh fruit to pay us,” though the treatments were free. “They were such wonderful, good-hearted people; it was an all-around amazing experience,” he said. On the walls of some homes were photos of children and family members who had been lost to war, injuries, or disease. In addition to treating people, the group also trained local doctors and volunteers who could continue the treatments after they left.“We wanted to give them the ability and knowledge to treat themselves,” said Putnam. Though Armenia was the first state to accept Christianity in the early 4th century, it has been fraught with battles and violence waged on its people through the years. In the

early 20th century, a genocide by the Ottoman Turks killed as many as 1.5 million Armenians, and thousands fled. In 1920, the country fell under Soviet rule, but with the collapse of the USSR, Armenia became an independent republic in 1991. In mid-September, the neighboring state of Azerbaijan regained control over a breakaway Armenian enclave in Nagorno-Karabakh after heavy fighting.Despite that, Apkarian said, the Armenian Medical Mission was dispatching another team of medical volunteers to the country on Sept. 22. Next year, Putnam hopes to be among them.“It’s an incredible experience. I want to go back so bad,” he said.
