The holidays are here and the Christmas season is upon us. Replicating what made the season feel so magical to us as children, reveals we are still kids at heart. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced growing up. The smells, the sounds, the lights, the Christmas spirit, are all embedded in our hearts. A Christmas tradition we enjoy together is watching “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” and “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” Mia and Ava love Yukon Cornelius and Bergermeister Meisterberger. They are part of our foyer Christmas decorations. We light the fireplace, make hot cocoa, and watch together. It’s pretty cool. It brings us back to simpler times and reminds us sometimes all we need is some warmth, some taste, and each other. In our December issue, we look back at The Santa Parade. We speak with Chamber Executive Director and President Jennifer Boettcher and find out how the most famous horses in the world, The Budweiser Clydesdales, made Grosse Pointe a stop. The parade kicks off a magical experience in Grosse Pointe which transforms into Christmas Main Street. The local businesses support the parade and without them the tradition we love wouldn't happen. We are blessed to have them and privileged to support them. Heirlooms are a part of the nostalgia of Christmas. They connect us to our history. We visit with jewelry designer Emily Prchlik who can reimagine those special pieces so those family connections live on. How about some unique recipes for the season! We've got some incredible eats to bring the family together and enhance your holiday get togethers. The pictures alone will make you excited to try them out. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of one another, extending grace, empathy and love, while celebrating the birth of Christ. Selecting a piece of jewelry for yourself or someone else can be very personal. One’s style, taste, budget, and occasion go into the decision. But, you may also acquire jewelry passed down through family members. This heirloom jewelry often conjures up strong emotions, especially if the person it originally belonged to is no longer with us. “Fine jewelry is amazing because you can keep it in the family for so many generations, especially if you take care of it,” says Emily Prchlik, owner of Emily Prchlik Fine Jewelry. “That is special because many people think that only royal families have heirloom-worthy

pieces, but many families have wonderful things from their grandparents or great-grandparents.” A quality piece of jewelry is not only something that can last forever but can also be redesigned many years later if the recipient’s style and preferences change. “I have a couple who got engaged when they were very young and didn't have much money, and the ring's not quite the woman’s style anymore,” says Emily. “So, we're taking her ring and her mom's engagement ring and combining it into a new one. She’ll have a piece of her mom and then pieces of her original ring from when she and her husband started.” CONTINUED >

Clients often come in with something they received from an ancestor, and even though it’s not quite their style, it's still very precious. Emily can reuse those stones and metals to redesign them into the perfect fit. “We want to make their jewelry into something they love and not just something they wear for a sentimental reason,” she says. Sometimes the metal has been worn away from years of wear, but the stones are just fine. “We take the stones out and repurpose them, and it's still very special because the wearer knows they have those original pieces in there.” She can then take that unused gold or other precious metal and melt it down to be used in that piece, a new piece, or give the client credit. Emily can even take one piece, like a bracelet, and make it into an entirely different piece, like a ring. “I've taken a big gaudy necklace and made it into a ring for every family member,” she says. “I have another project where I’m taking an old brooch and making it into a ring.” She encourages people to bring in anything they have, even if they think it’s likely just costume jewelry. “A lot of the times, people have found some pretty amazing treasures that they thought for sure was just some kind of junk jewelry,” says Emily. “Genuine gemstones, like diamonds, can withstand being taken out of their original mountings.” “Initial consultations are free of charge, and that's when I look at all your pieces, and we discuss what style or piece you’re looking for,” she says. “Maybe you have a necklace, but you wear rings more often. We might talk about the other jewelry in your collection and how it might fit.”

If the person decides to move forward, she can provide a 3D CAD design, a realistic rendering of the final piece. “We 3D print a model of it as well, so you'll get to try on the piece during that second appointment. We can make any edits at that stage if necessary.” Once approved, the piece will be cast and finalized for wear. Heirloom jewelry makes a beautiful gift, especially around the holidays when families are often together and emotions are already running high. Everyone loves a parade, and this past November 25th, the people of Grosse Pointe were able to experience an extra-special holiday treat. The 97th annual Santa Claus Parade featured a great lineup of traditional participants but also showed off new floats and a very special group of horses! “The Budweiser Clydesdales were going to be in the Detroit Thanksgiving Day Parade, and thankfully, when they’re ‘in town,’ they like to participate in all the local parades,” says Jennifer Boettcher, the executive director and president of the Grosse Pointe Chamber of Commerce, which took over the reins of the parade in 2012. “I believe they were in the parade many years ago, as they rarely come to town.” CONTINUED >

Other participants included the Golden Retriever Group, the West Highland White Terrier Group, the Red Baron Group - which helped carry sponsor banners - girl scout and boy scout troops, dance groups, Detroit Ghostbusters, beautiful princesses, and many others. “The parade has always kept its magical tradition but has grown to be a larger parade with more marching bands and additional floats from The Parade Company,” she says. “The groups/organizations participation has increased, and the spectatorship has grown. It’s no longer just a hometown parade, but a parade that people from afar come to watch.” Thousands of people of all ages lined the streets to enjoy the music, dancing, laughter, and of course, a ho-ho-ho from Santa! It’s a great 40 minutes of incredible and varied entertainment and has something for everyone. For many families, the parade has become a part of their annual tradition. It’s a way to kick off the holiday season and get ready for all the fanfare and fun of the Christmas holiday. It’s just another great reason to live in and around Grosse Pointe.

In addition to the Santa Claus Parade, the Chamber also hosts a Scavenger Hunt. “To promote our fabulous local businesses throughout the holidays and encourage the community to shop locally, the Chamber is putting on a Toyland Scavenger Hunt,” says Jennifer. “Participating businesses throughout the community will be giving out small toys.” The Toyland Scavenger Hunt maps are available at the Chamber of Commerce on Kercheval Avenue. The Hunt started on Friday, November 25th , and will continue through December 18th. Visitors and shoppers to downtown have also been able to enjoy the transformation of Kercheval Avenue into Christmas Street, which gives the community another opportunity to come out and celebrate the holiday. “All of Grosse Pointe becomes a magical holiday spectacular offering an exceptional shopping experience,” she says. These events are a great way for people to discover all the great local businesses in Grosse Pointe and a nice way for business owners to give back. “Supporting community events is

an excellent way for businesses to prove their dedication to the community that helps make them successful,” says Jennifer. “Customers will connect the positive experience they had at the community event and the businesses that helped make it happen.” She adds, “Without the financial support and participation of the business owners, the parade would not be possible. Their participation also gets the word out to more people that may have never heard of their business before. It drives goodwill, business connections, and personal connections.”

Jennifer has been part of the Chamber since 2006, basically since the organization’s inception. “I enjoy giving back to the community I was born and raised in along with my five siblings, and where I’m raising five sons with my husband,” she says. The Grosse Pointe Chamber offers many resources for the local business community and those who patronize it, such as gift certificates to various shops, gyms, restaurants, and more. Heavenly Holiday Recipes H O T C H O C O L AT E B O MB S EASY CHRISTMAS CHOCOLATE BOMB RECIPE BY KIMSPIRED DIY

INGREDIENTS • 1 12- ounce package semi-sweet chocolate chips • 1 packet instant cocoa mix • 1 cup mini marshmallows • ¼ cup white melting chocolate • ¼ cup Christmas sprinkles • 6 cups hot milk to make the bombs • Round silicone mold

DIRECTIONS 1. Place the semi-sweet chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each interval until the chocolate chips are fully melted. 2. Put a spoonful of melted chocolate inside one cup on the silicone mold and use the back of the spoon to spread the chocolate up the sides of the mold. Continue this process until all the molds are coated. 3. Set the remaining chocolate aside for sealing and decorating the bombs. Allow the chocolate to set completely, around 2 to 3 hours. You can speed up the process by placing the chocolate in the refrigerator. 4. When the chocolate is set, remove each chocolate piece from the mold. Add a small amount of instant hot cocoa mix to half the pieces and top the hot cocoa mix with marshmallows and half the sprinkles.

5. Reheat the chocolate in 15-second intervals until melted. Pick up an empty chocolate piece and dip the edges into the melted chocolate. Carefully place it on top of a filled piece and lightly press it into place. Use your finger to smooth the melted chocolate around the seam. Continue until all the chocolate bombs are sealed. 6. Melt the red and green chocolate according to the package instructions, then place the melted chocolate into

piping bags. Drizzle the chocolate over the top of the bombs to decorate. Sprinkle the remaining sprinkles over the top of the bombs. 7. Allow the chocolate decorations to set before using, around 1 hour. 8. To make the hot chocolate bombs, place the bomb in the bottom of a mug. Pour one cup of hot milk over the top of the bomb to melt the chocolate. When the chocolate is completely melted, stir to combine.

CHRISTMAS COOKIES! (VANILLA BISCUITS/SUGAR COOKIES) by RECIPETINEATS

INGREDIENTS • 225g / 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (or use salted, skip salt) • 1 cup (220g) white sugar, preferably caster / superfine • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract • 1 large egg (55-60g / 1.9-2oz) • 3 cups (450g) flour , plain / all purpose • 3/4 tsp baking powder • 3/4 tsp salt

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat Oven to 180°C / 350°F (160°C fan). Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. 2. Beat butter and sugar in a large bowl until creamy (1 minute on speed 5) 3. Add egg and vanilla, and beat until thoroughly combined. 4. Add flour, baking powder, and salt. 5. Mix slowly, then beat until the flour is incorporated – it will be clumpy. 6. Dust the work surface with flour, and scrape the dough out of the bowl. Pat together, cut in half, then shape into two discs. 7. Roll out to 0.3cm / 1/8" (for thinner, crispier cookies) or 0.6cm / 1/4" (for thicker, softer cookies), sprinkling with flour under and over the dough so it doesn't stick. 8. Use cookie cutters to press out shapes and use a knife or spatula to transfer shapes to prepared baking sheets. (Keep dough that doesn’t fit in the oven in the fridge). 9. Bake for 10 minutes, swapping trays halfway (Note 2), until the surface is pale golden and the edges are just beginning to turn light golden. 10. Allow cookies to cool completely on trays (they will finish cooking on the trays). 11. Dust with powdered sugar.

THE BEST MULLED CIDER by SONJA OVERHISER INGREDIENTS • 1 whole nutmeg • 10 allspice berries • 10 cloves • 2-star anise

4 cinnamon sticks ½ gallon apple cider* ¼ cup rum, optional 1 small orange for garnish Whole cranberries for garnish

DIRECTIONS 1. Toast the spices: Add the nutmeg, allspice, cloves, star anise, and cinnamon to the bottom of a pot (or to a skillet for Slow Cooker instructions). Toast over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until fragrant. 2. Stovetop cooking instructions: Turn the heat to low. Pour in the apple cider and bring to below a simmer, just barely bubbling. Warm for 1 hour on low heat (don’t let it simmer). Skim off any particulate if desired, or stir to re-incorporate it. 3. Slow Cooker & Instant Pot instructions: Place the apple cider in the slow cooker or Instant Pot (pressure cooker) with the spices. Cook on low for 3 hours OR Normal using the Instant Pot “Slow Cooker” setting. 4. If using, stir in the rum. Garnish with orange slices and cranberries, then serve.

HOT BUT TERED RUM by SONJA OVERHISER INGREDIENTS For the spiced butter (4 drinks; multiply as desired) • 6 tablespoons salted butter • 3 tablespoons brown sugar • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg • ¼ teaspoon allspice

For each drink • 1 ½ tablespoons spiced butter • 2 ounces rum • 6 ounces boiling water*

DIRECTIONS 1. Make the spiced butter: Roll the butter with a rolling pin until it is flattened. Add the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. Use a spatula to combine the butter together with the sugar and spices until everything is incorporated. Use immediately or refrigerate until making the drinks. 2. To make the drinks: Add 1 ½ tablespoons of the spiced butter to each glass. Add rum and boiling water and stir until combined. If you like a sweeter drink, top with whipped cream. Garnish as you wish.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”

A Pointe In Time

1251 Devonshire Designed by John W. Case for George W. Yeoman, an advertising manager for Continental Motor Company. 1251 Devonshire is a classically styled center entrance Colonial home completed in 1916-1917. The distinctive 3,833 sq ft residence was featured in a 1919 edition of Michigan Architect and Engineer. The publication acknowledges “the carpenter’s beautiful woodwork” - on the exterior the oversized entryway is wonderfully detailed, flanked by leaded glass sidelights and an arched transom, while the interior has elegant detailing including a wood paneled library and an elaborate balustrade on the stairway. Situated on a large double lot the grounds include a garage with a 3-room carriage house on the second floor. The formal garden, featuring evergreens and dense shrubbery, was partially walled and featured a decorative fountain that cascaded into a pool containing an array of aquatic plants. Born in Ohio in 1864, the architect John W. Case, along with Albert Kahn, and Louis Kamper, were members of the Detroit Architectural Sketch Club, who regularly gave public lectures on architectural history.
