In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. In reflection with my family, there is one ultimate truth always present. In good times and bad, our faith in God always brings us back to center and a sense of calm, perseverance, and love. No matter how much we may resist, ignore, or forget, He is always there once we decide to trust in him. He never will give up on us, and He empowers us to believe in ourselves. No human strength or words will ever be more powerful than his belief and love. The mission of Grosse Pointe City Lifestyle is service and connections. We are humbled and blessed to live in this amazing community. A Pointe In Time 805 Three Mile Drive Designed by Charles Kotting for Dr. B. Raymond Hoobler, a renowned Detroit pediatrician. 805 Three Mile Drive is an English Tudor style home built in 1917 - 1919. The 4,710 sq ft property, located near Three Mile Park, features beautiful hand carved woodwork, multiple leaded glass windows, and a decorative stucco and timber section on the second floor. During its history the residence has had a 17 x 19 sq ft green house, a separate carriage house, along with a 4 -room apartment on the third floor. Architect Charles Kotting was born in Holland in 1865. Having completed his architectural studies in Amsterdam Kotting moved to Detroit at the age of 24. With a reputation as an incredibly skilled designer, Charles Kotting created over 100 structures in Metro Detroit. Renowned author and historian Clarence M. Burton once wrote “Charles Kotting is recognized as an architect of pronounced skill and ability, one whose designs combine in the most attractive form, utility, convenience, and beauty”. During his career Kotting served as the treasurer and president for the Michigan Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

If you’re interested in getting involved in your community, meeting many great women, and learning new skills, then the Junior Women’s League of Detroit (JWLD) is for you. Founded nationwide in 1901 and locally in 1914, its mission has been promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. “Forty-seven women started our League, and its first project was in 1915, when it created a lunchroom [on Woodward Avenue] to provide nutritious meals for working women,” says Kimberly Burke, its current president. “There were no lunchrooms for women in Detroit at that time. This was the beginning of a process where the League identifies needs in the community and helps to fulfill those needs for women and children.” One of the ways they accomplish this is by holding fundraisers. “Our largest fundraising event is the Designers’ Show House, which takes place every two years and really helps fund us for the next cycle,” she says. Last month, the chosen home was a manor-style home known as the House on the Hill on Lake Shore Road in Grosse Pointe Farms. “We basically take a historical home in Detroit or Grosse Pointe and have designers come in and design all the different rooms in the home. It's an opportunity for the community to support the League and our causes, but also to take a look at some beautifully decorated homes and get some ideas for themselves.” On alternate years, the organization holds a Holiday Jubilee. “It's a very festive dress-up event during the holidays, and people can come and have a good time,” says Sandra Davis, its public relations chair for the Show House event and chair of its public relations, marketing and website committee. “There’s a dinner and sometimes we have an auction or a raffle.” Other fun fundraising events held throughout the year have included Painting with a Twist and a Walk at the Zoo. “During Covid, one of our members, who is a wonderful chef, did an online cooking class fundraiser, and we also had a photographer take family pictures,” says Kimberly. “Everyone’s welcome in the League, and I think people really understand that when they see it in action.”

The monies raised are used for a variety of great causes. These include scholarships for female high school seniors who are pursuing higher education, grants that are given to nonprofit organizations, and the undertaking of projects within the community. One of its most recent and larger projects was developing a pantry for the Empowerment Plan, which focuses on breaking the cycle of homelessness through employment. JWLD provided two healthy meals a day for 50 weeks to 50 of their participants and 80 of their children. A lunch-and-learn program was also implemented so these women could sit down on their break and learn how to make soup or a healthy tuna salad. “We fund many different projects, and a lot of them are in the health arena, which as a nurse interested me,” says Sue Webb Dickson, its sustainer council director.

“We've worked a lot in the area of infant mortality, have held community baby showers, and with Children's Hospital of Michigan, put together a pediatric mobile van with a doctor and nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant who provide physicals for kids. “Another thing we did - and none of us are producers or anything like that - was a video. It was called Hospice, a Shared Experience, and it won a national award.” Through JWLD, members who have no background in certain areas get to increase their knowledge and learn new things. “I've been chair of the Grants and Scholarships Committee, and I really didn't have any experience with that before,” says Sandra. “But, by being a chair of that committee and working with a team of people, I learned how to become a better leader, learned about my community, and learned how to work with the other women around me.”

She adds, “This experience and the experience of actually going out and being hands-on, whether it's tutoring or helping to paint rooms at Brilliant Detroit, or helping to put together gifts for the holidays so children in underserved areas can have something to look forward to, makes us all stronger and better.” The minimum age to join the League is 21, but there’s no maximum age limit. “I had this image of these little old ladies with long white gloves who did not look like me, but then I was invited to a recruitment event and it just changed my perspective altogether,” says Sandra. “It’s such a diverse range of women.” To learn more about volunteering with the Junior Women’s League of Detroit and/or to help support its mission, go to www.jldetroit.org.

A beautiful sunset. The face of a loved one. A fine piece of art. Our sight makes it possible for us to appreciate all of these and so much more. But very poor vision or none at all robs us of those pleasures and the simple scenes so many of us take for granted every day. In Grosse Pointe Park, one organization has been helping the visually impaired and their families since 1972 – the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology. Now part of Henry Ford Health, the DIO assists and educates the visually impaired to keep their independence and live satisfying lives in a sighted world. In addition, the DIO also sponsors international meetings each year that bring together the world’s leading vision-related scientists to discuss advances in the field. Last October, this included more than 30 speakers from around the world who gave presentations on the most current findings on visual neuro-prosthetic devices to be placed in the eye or brain to restore sight to some of those who are blind. More than 500 of the devices have already been implanted in patients worldwide and research continues. On a day-to-day level, the DIO offers support groups for those with little or no eyesight. Helped by the Friends of Vision, the DIO manages five separate support groups that meet monthly or twice-a-month at various locations in the metro area to discuss the challenges of living with visual impairment. Besides discussing successes and difficulties, they hear from speakers on a variety of topics and, occasionally, take day trips. Among the support group’s longtime members are Nino and Marie Pacini of Grosse Pointe Woods, who gradually lost their vision over many years. The couple is often seen, walking on Mack Avenue with their white canes, running errands. Marie said the DIO’s support groups have been a big help. “You’re meeting with people in the same situation as you. It can feel kind of lonely but in a room full of other people like you, you can share ideas and laugh about things,” she said. For Nino, the support groups enable him to help others. “It gives me an avenue to give back to others going through vision loss,” he said. The couple live independently in their own home, cooking and cleaning and Nino even cuts his own grass. Recently, the couple cooked a pasta dinner for 100 people at a Lions Club fundraiser at a local hall in Harper Woods. Nino smiled at the thought. “You have to realize it’s very difficult for someone to imagine what it’s like to do everything without sight,” he said. “You have to pay more attention to your hearing, and you have to be more aware of your surroundings.” Each June, the couple dons white gloves to judge by touch the design of a group of classic cars at the DIO’s annual EyesOn Design car show. Often, they choose the same winning car as the sighted judges. Nino said one of the advances making life easier for those with low- or no vision has been voice-activated devices like Siri, Alexa, and Google. “This is a byproduct of technology that was not originally designed for us that we can incorporate into our lives,” he said. Besides the institute’s support groups, the resource center (named for Martha Gorey, a longtime benefactor) houses a wide variety of low-vision aids, from closed-circuit magnifying machines and hand-held magnifiers to large print calendars, talking watches and clocks and other resources. The organization also provides a variety of educational resources to the visually-impaired and the sighted communities. The DIO is closely affiliated with the ophthalmic technician training at Henry Ford College in Dearborn and the Henry Ford Health Department of Ophthalmology’s resident training program. Like all non-profits, the DIO relies on volunteers to help in many areas. In addition to the Friends of Vision, DIO has a volunteer EyesOn Design leadership committee and vehicle selection committee that meet year-round helping staff plan and implement

Alexander Hamilton once proclaimed: “No citizen of the U.S. shall refrain from turkey on Thanksgiving Day.” Hamilton’s proclamation became a reality, and according to the National Turkey Federation, about 45 million to 46 million turkeys are consumed each Thanksgiving. Here is a Thanksgiving Recipe that turns the traditional turkey into a smokin’ one!

THANKSGIVING RECIPE

SMOKED TURKEY BREAST ingredients: • • • • • • •

1/2 Pound butter 6 Clove garlic, minced 8 Sprig fresh thyme 1 Sprig fresh rosemary Tablespoon cracked black pepper 1/2 Tablespoon Kosher salt 1 (12 lb) whole turkey

makes: 8 servings

prep time: 15 minutes

cook time: 4 hours

pellets: cherry

directions: SET UP • Set the grill temperature to 300°F and preheat with the lid closed for 15 minutes. • In a small bowl, combine softened butter with minced garlic, thyme leaves, chopped rosemary, black pepper and kosher salt PREPARATION • Prep the turkey by separating the skin from the breast, creating a pocket to stuff the butter-herb mixture in. Cover the entire breast with 1/4” thickness of butter mixture. • Season the whole turkey with kosher salt and black pepper. • Optional: Stuff turkey cavity with Traditional Stuffing recipe. When ready to cook, set the grill temperature to 300°F and preheat, lid closed for 15 minutes. COOK • Place turkey on the grill and smoke at 300°F for 3-4 hours. Check the internal temperature; the desired temperature is 175°F in the thigh next to the bone and 160°F in the breast. Turkey will continue to cook once taken off the grill to reach a final temperature of 165°F in the breast. FINISH • Let rest for 10-15 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
