E DWA R D O ' M A LLE Y EDWARD R O’MALLEY, MD, IS A GROSSE POINTE PEDIATRIC OPHTHALMOLOGIST WHO HAS SERVED THE COMMUNITY FOR 40 YEARS. He’s been on the medical staff of Children‘s Hospital of Michigan, Bon Secours Hospital, Henry Ford--Cottage, and St. John Hospital. In 1986, he entered the world of international medicine when he made his first of twenty missions to teach pediatric eye surgery to physicians in developing nations on five continents. Ed has received many awards over the years, including the Community Service Award from the Michigan State Medical Society, Humanitarian awards from the Wayne County Medical Society snd the Syrian Arab Cultural Association. One of Ed’s college roommates was in pre-med and it was he who suggested medical school. They were both admitted to the University of Michigan Medical School. “After my first year, my summer externship at the Chelsea Medical Center fell apart in the first week, but I met a young ophthalmologist in the cafeteria line and he invited me to shadow him. He put me to work as his tech and he was my first teacher of ophthalmology. Then he introduced me to a famous, about-to-retire ophthalmology professor who had some research ideas that he never got around to. The rest Is history.” Forty years later, Dr. Ed is now retired but he still advises young people, physicians, and others who seek his counsel. He gets occasional phone calls from former patients on his never-been-unlisted home phone. He and his wife of fifty years, Judy—his date at that fateful wedding reception--live in Grosse Pointe. They spend time in North Carolina in their cottage across the woods from their pediatric ophthalmologist daughter Erin, son-in-law, and two grandchildren. Their adult son Kevin visits from Austin, Texas. When I think of all the good that Dr. Ed has contributed to our community and to the world, I can’t imagine what would have been lost if the seating chart at that wedding reception had been arranged differently.

Grosse Pointe Lifestyle | June 2021
“TO HAVE REACHED THE AGE OF RETIREMENT IS A CREDIT TO A PERSON. Everyone is not granted this privilege. After all, we have been through three wars, a depression, and various illnesses in getting there,” touted Edward Gherig on September 15, 1959, as then President of the Senior Men's Club. And that is how the SMC began… Founded in 1959 by Edward Gherig and John Lake, Director of the War Memorial at that time, to be a men's social organization, no one knew or believed how influential this group could become. Nine local and prominent leaders, John Lake, Ed Gehrig, Eugene Hoelzle, Harold Merrill, Sam Shenefield, John Kuivinen, Wilbur Kamm, Lorenz Hittle, and Stanley Schlingman gathered on July 15th, 1959 to explore the idea of a men’s social organization. Only after just a few more meetings, the SMC blossomed into a full-fledged club to operate for social, charitable, literary, and educational purposes. EightyTwo men were present at the first general meeting on September 15, 1959, where Red Jones, a well-known American League Umpire, was the very first speaker. Just a few years ago in 2019, the Senior Men’s Club wanted to attract younger men to the Organization and changed the name to The Men’s Club. With over 400 members who are 55 or older, it is now recruiting younger professional members and achieving its many goals. The Men's Club Foundation supports various philanthropic organizations and prides itself on assisting Grosse Pointe non-profits with their mission. In addition, this fabulous group of gentlemen has an amazing array of activities. Whether it's their choral company, tennis or bowling league, golf gathering, bridge table, investment strategists group, readers club, pool, or billiards fan club, they have it all. These various subclasses and social camaraderie assure that each member is enjoying themselves in good company. And if that isn’t enough, they

1. WHAT DO YOU DO IN THE COMMUNITY... BOTH AS A PROFESSIONAL AND AS A VOLUNTEER. My business, Yellow Door Brand, and I are a very integral part of this community. We are always on the lookout to work alongside organizations to help with fundraising and providing professional services. For example, Yellow Door Brand and I have been working with Racing 4 Kids for many years. Through working with Racing 4 Kids, the Yellow Door Brand was able to provide photography coverage for the event as well as offering portrait services, custom handmade shoes and suits to be bid on during the event. Yellow Door Brand and I believe in giving back within the surrounding communities where we do business. 2. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HOBBY. There are so many hobbies in which I have indulged; however, the hobby I enjoy the most is collecting DVDs. It's something I find very fascinating and keeps me in the know with the latest hit and classic movies.

3. WHAT IS YOUR LIFE'S MOTTO. I can think of many life's mottos over my lifetime; the one that keeps me motivated and going is this: no matter how old or where you are in life don't let go of your dreams. 4. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE TO YOUNG PEOPLE GROWING UP IN SOCIETY TODAY? Wow. I do think it is much harder growing up in today's world than ever before. The single piece of advice that I can give to a young person growing up in society today is to explore life outside your surroundings because you will be amazed at what you will discover.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE THE PRO GOLFER’S FITNESS JOURNEY
SCOTT
STALLINGS’
WORKOUT ARTICLE CITY LIFESTYLE
SCOTT STALLINGS DISCOVERED HIS INTEREST IN GOLF AT THE YOUNG AGE OF 3. But it was the “aha moment” for his love of the game that came in 1997 when Tiger Woods won the Masters and would forever change the entire landscape of the industry, as well as what Stallings would aspire to achieve in his future professional endeavors. Little did he know at the time, however, not just how successful he would become, but also how an unforeseen health compromise would also rock his world, and his cross training, for the better. He was a seven-time tournament winner and was an All-American while attending Tennessee Tech, and he has won on the PGA Tour three times as a professional golfer. Flash forward to the year 2016: It became a life-changing year he never would have anticipated; one filled with strife as he learned he had been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea and acute adrenal fatigue. It was a result of some unhealthy nutritional habits, both of which affected his ability to continue effectively as a professional athlete. With the guidance of doctors, surgeons, and his good friend Rich Froning, a four-time Crossfit champion, Scott developed a workout to trim 60 pounds, boasting 10% body fat, revising his daily eating habits, and sleeping healthily through the night. Had Scott not gone to the doctor because of that innate fear, he never would have known the diagnosis of sleep apnea that needed to be addressed. Luckily for Scott, he didn’t have an overwhelming, crazy life overhaul. Instead, he was able to find one small thing, delivering simple systematic changes in his workout that led to his improvement in fitness and quality of life. “You only get one body,” he says. “Golf is a grind, but don’t let physicality get in the way of your game,” Scott says.

SCOTT’S TOP EXERCISES
KETTLEBELL POWER SNATCH: Uses ground force to leverage the kettlebell upward, then the shoulder, arm and back support the weight as it gets pushed overhead. Also a great cardio exercise and trains the body for a good golf swing.
KETTLEBELL HALO: Start by holding the kettlebell upside down at chest height, then lift the weight to head height and rotate it around the head like a halo in both directions. This exercise focuses on shoulder mobility—which is important for a good golf swing—and warms up the muscles and soft tissue around the shoulder girdle.
CLEAN TO LUNGE: First, the kettlebell is lifted from the ground to shoulder height. Then, the fowardlunge loads weight into the legs one at a time, which happens from the backswing to the downswing. The exercise increases strength in calves and forearms, which is essential for a powerful swing.
LANDMINES: LANDMINE RAINBOW: Tracing the shape of a rainbow, take the barbell down alongside each hip in a rotational movement and then back to an overhead position. Strengthens legs, shoulders and arms; improves coordination for ground-up downswing. LANDMINE ROTATIONAL CLEAN AND PRESS: Facing the landmine, hold the bar in your right hand, then pivot your toes 90 degrees to the left, dropping into a deep lunge while still holding the bar with your straight arm. Press into your front foot and stand up as you press and lift the barbell to chest height, all in one quick motion. From the waist down, this move mimics the look of a golfer finishing a swing. LANDMINE THRUSTER: Thrust the barbell upward from a squat position. Builds lower-body muscles, which are key for the start of the ground swing and to get longer off the tee. 34
