The Art of Supporting Local ART IS SUCH AN IMPORTANT PART OF GROSSE POINTE. In our February issue, we connect to the history and people who create art in different ways. After graduating from Michigan State in 1993, I decided to travel through Europe.

around the painting, a seam opened-up through the people viewing and suddenly, she “smiled” at me. I will never forget that moment. I was instantly connected to history a few feet away. The painting was small, but its aura immense. I began looking at things differently. I found art in the details and a paradigm shift in how I perceived art. It is something that motivated me to start Grosse Pointe Lifestyle. Grosse Pointe is a living breathing piece of art that we encounter every day and I wanted to contribute. The beauty of Grosse Pointe lies in the people who have crafted a historic foundation that we are entrusted in preserving and growing. We are the artists who can continue to maintain this community with the choices we make. When we support the businesses in our community, we become artists. We participate in the sculpting of Grosse Pointe. Every time we walk through the door of a local business, we are adding to the beauty that surrounds us. We connect, we support, and we are thoughtful in being artisans of Grosse Pointe.

1. WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THE GREAT FRAME UP? WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN UP THE STORE? WHY GROSSE POINTE? While I was attending Eastern Michigan University, I was looking for a part time job. I happened to see a Help Wanted sign in the window of The Great Frame Up (yes, an actual sign, as it was 22 years ago, and that’s how things were done back then!). I applied and got the job. On my second day of work, probably sick of all of my questions and inquiries to figure out the ins and outs and why’s of custom framing, the owner, Tom, said to me “you are going to own this place someday”. After 4 years of working here, Tom’s prediction came true! 18 years later, I’m still here!

THE POWER OF POTTERY THE HISTORY OF PEWABIC

THIS IS NOT THE FIRST PANDEMIC THAT PEWABIC POTTERY HAS GONE THROUGH. Founded in 1903, it has survived, among other challenges, the Bird Flu in 1918, two world wars and the Great Depression. In addition to being in operation for well over a century, the other extraordinary thing about the ceramic studio is that it’s been housed in the same building on East Jefferson Avenue since 1907. “It’s a Tudor-style National Historic Landmark building that was designed to resemble an old English inn, but it’s always been a working pottery studio,” says Steve McBride, executive director of Pewabic. “It was originally in a carriage house downtown in Brush Park, but it quickly outgrew that space.” The building was designed by William Stratton, a prominent architect in his time, who married Mary Chase Perry, a painter of china and one of the founders of the pottery. Horace Caulkins, the other founder, was a kiln manufacturer and dentist, and he and Mary were co-founders of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts. Some of the original equipment dates back to the early 1900s and is still in use today. “Our clay mixer was installed in 1912 and is actually part of the building,” says Lexi Pelt hand-painting Pewabic tiles

Steve. “There’s a large vat under the floor where the clay

slip is stirred in a big concrete mixer and we still use that to make all of our tile clay. It has the overhead belts and pulleys and it just breathes history when you walk back there.” For those who would like to learn more about how pottery is made or to make it themselves, Pewabic has an onsite education studio where classes are held for teens and adults year round. Pewabic also does a lot of work with the Detroit Public Schools so they have many programs for school-age kids. “We offer workshops for school groups and individuals of all ages where people can come in and take a hands-on tile making workshop,” says Steve. “We make everything from scratch. We make the clay, we make the glazes, and do all the firing.” The Pewabic Street Team offers pop-up experiences. “The Street Team is fun. We knew that not everyone was going to come to our building, so we decided to package the experience and take it on the road. We received a grant from the Knight Foundation for their Knight Arts Challenge Detroit, which allowed us to purchase a Ford transit van that we converted into a mobile museum.” The van includes interactive activities, and pulls a trailer with portable kilns which allow people to do Raku firing, which can be done rapidly. The van travels to the Detroit River Walk every month and to parks and schools. Pewabic Pottery also has galleries and museums which are open to the public free of charge. The galleries showcase ceramic art by 50 to 100 artists all across North America at all times. The museums have historic works dating from the pre-1900s and early 1900s. “We’re particularly well known for our iridescent pottery and tile and iridescent glaze, so you can see some iridescent pots from the early 1900s,” says Steve. “We have one pot that is covered in a bright orange uranium glaze, so you get to see some things you wouldn’t normally see.” The Pottery offers docent-guided tours and behindthe-scenes tours as well. In addition, Pewabic offers rotating exhibitions of other works. “Recently, people could see Blue Collar by Kyle and Kelly Phelps, twin artists who do sculptural vignettes of the working class life. It was incredibly powerful.” 20

Grosse Pointe Lifestyle | February 2021

Pewabic installations can be found all over the city and region [see sidebar]. There is a Google map on their website showing a small sampling of where some of their installations can be found. “We’re part of the fabric of Detroit, so you can see Pewabic tile throughout the region. It’s part of what makes Detroit, Detroit.” If people are interested in using Pewabic tiles in their homes, there are a lot from which to choose. “We have an architectural tile showroom where you can see a lot of shapes and patterns and glaze colors,” says Steve. “People who buy our pottery and use our architectural tile to install a fireplace surround often say that it makes them want to sit by the fire and enjoy the experience more. “Or, people who have installed a Pewabic backsplash will say that it inspires them while cooking. You know that this was made by somebody and you have that feeling of connection.” People can browse their products either in-store or online, or come in to shop for pottery and tile. “We can ship, do curbside delivery, or do a video chat in order to see what we have to purchase. Just by shopping online or in person buying art helps support the artists we represent. We’re a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and there are lots of ways to support us, whether buying, becoming a member or making a donation.” Pewabic Pottery, he adds, celebrates something that’s really special about people, especially here in Detroit, because it’s the first and only U.S. city to be named a UNESCO Design City. It really celebrates that creative process. “Art brings joy into our lives and has the power to make us relax, and it provides comfort, which is especially needed now,” says Steve. “We’re profoundly grateful to everyone who has supported the pottery throughout the pandemic and it’s really gratifying to know that so many people love the place and want to support the arts, and want to make sure this organization is here for the next 100 years.” Pewabic Pottery is located at 10125 E. CHARLEVOIX’S NEWEST HOT SPOT: HOTEL EARL

CHARLEVOIX, A CHARMING RESORT TOWN LOCATED WITHIN MINUTES OF LAKE MICHIGAN, IS A DESTINATION FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES, AND IS WELL-KNOWN FOR ITS ICONIC GNOME AND WHIMSICAL MUSHROOM HOUSES. These unique dwellings were designed by Earl Young, a local architect who also built several commercial buildings during his lifetime. One of these, known as Earl Young’s Weathervane Lodge, located at 120 Michigan Avenue, was built in 1959 and was in serious need of renovation, restoration, and some loving care. Silva Property Group, a family-owned property management company for 30 years, stepped in to give it just that. “My wife [Jennie) and I have had a cottage in Charlevoix for over 20 years,” says Paul Silva, owner of Silva Property Group along with his wife and other family members. “Our first cottage was an Earl Young property.” He didn’t want to just create a new hotel, he explains, but wanted to acquire something with a special story behind it. “I thought there were enough unique features to this place that we could enhance what was here and improve upon it. I wanted to get involved with this project because it was something that was special to the town. And, because Earl Young is iconic with Charlevoix, we decided to name it Hotel Earl,” he says. Although Paul and Jennie remain active in the oversight of the hotel, which opened in September 2020, they partnered with Detroit-based Hotel Investment Services Inc. (HIS), to ensure that the hotel is run the right way, every day. “We manage quite a few upscale boutique hotels in the state of Michigan, including Hotel Iroquois,” says Ian Fleming, general manager of Hotel Earl. While updating and renovating the hotel, Silva Property Group and the designers focused on preserving many of the original details

and characteristics of the hotel. “One of the big things for Earl Young was using stones from the area in the build,” says Ian. “So, we made that a focus of our lobby. We have the original fireplace from the lodge, the original mantel, and the stone on the face of the front desk.” This stone was even incorporated onto the turrets outside of the hotel. “This was a two-story property and we added a third floor, so we wove in some of the original stonework to add to our third floor turrets, or ‘witches hats’, as we call them,” says Paul. “A lot of locals have commented that they look like they were built that way originally, so the stone masons did a nice job and it doesn’t look too obvious that we added on.” They also tried to keep to the original theme when furnishing the property. “Our headboards in a lot of the rooms are live-edged, as is our boardroom table and some of the furniture in the lobby,” says Paul. “Although they may not be original to the property, they are original in theme because it was built back when mid-century modern was today’s kind of modern, hip décor.” Totally updated as well are the bathrooms. “Our bathrooms are absolutely phenomenal,” says Ian. “The spacious showers, the lighted makeup mirrors, the undercabinet lighting - all these features are what makes them upscale.” Along with the 56 guest rooms, Hotel Earl has a spectacular 1,500 square-foot suite. “We call it our Earl Suite, but it’s also what we call our bridal suite as well,” says Ian. “Charlevoix is a big wedding destination, and there are half a dozen wedding venues in the area that we have partnered with.” The luxury suite has a full kitchen, 1½ baths, a master en suite bedroom with a king-sized bed, a living room with a pull-out sofa and a fireplace. In the kitchen, there is a large live-edge dining room table. The suite also features a wraparound balcony that overlooks Round Lake and downtown Charlevoix, so guests have a fantastic view. It also has a washer and dryer, so it’s easy to stay for an extended period of time. If that’s still not enough space for you and your family, you have the option to make it

CULINARY CREATIONS

va lenti ne’s feast ITALIAN STYLE ARTICLE TYLER FLORENCE, REE DRUMMOND, DAVID ROSENGARTEN

Chicken Marsala + Prep: 20 min + Cook: 20 min + Yield: 4 servings + 4 skinless, boneless, chicken breasts (about 1 1/2 pounds)

+ All-purpose flour, for dredging + Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper + 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil + 8 ounces crimini or porcini mushrooms, stemmed and halved

+ 1/2 cup sweet Marsala wine + 1/2 cup chicken stock + 2 tablespoon unsalted butter + 1/4 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley

Grosse Pointe Lifestyle | February 2021

1. Put the chicken breasts side by side on a cutting board and lay a piece of plastic wrap over them; pound with a flat meat mallet, until they are about 1/4-inch thick. Put some flour in a shallow platter and season with a fair amount of salt and pepper; mix with a fork to distribute evenly. 2. Heat the oil over medium-high flame in a large skillet. When the oil is nice and hot, dredge both sides of the chicken cutlets in the seasoned flour, shaking off the excess. Slip the cutlets into the pan and fry for 5 minutes on each side until golden, turning once – do this in batches if the pieces don’t fit comfortably in the pan. Remove the chicken to a large platter in a single layer to keep warm. 3. Lower the heat to medium, saute for 1 minute to render out some of the fat. Now, add the mushrooms and saute until they are nicely browned and their moisture has evaporated, about 5 minutes; season with salt and pepper. Pour the Marsala in the pan and boil down for a few seconds to cook out the alcohol. Add the chicken stock and simmer for a minute to reduce the sauce slightly. Stir in the butter and return the chicken to the pan; simmer gently for 1 minute to heat the chicken through. Season with salt and pepper and garnish with chopped parsley before serving.

Caprese Salad

+ Prep: 25 min + Inactive: 20 min + Cook: 15 min + Yield: 8 servings + 2 cups balsamic vinegar + 3 ripe tomatoes + 12 ounces fresh mozzarella, thickly sliced + Large bunch fresh basil leaves + Olive oil, for drizzling + Large pinch kosher salt + Large pinch freshly ground black pepper

1. Measure the balsamic vinegar and pour into a saucepan. Bring it to a gentle boil over a low heat. Cook it until the balsamic vinegar has reduced to a nice thick glaze (but still pourable), about 15 minutes. Allow the reduction to cool to room temperature before you serve it. 2. When you are ready to assemble the salad, cut the tomatoes into thick slices. Arrange them on a platter, alternating them with the mozzarella slices. Tuck the whole basil leaves in between the tomato and cheese slices. 3. Drizzle on the gorgeous, almost black balsamic reduction. Then drizzle olive oil in a thin stream over the top. Finally, sprinkle on salt and pepper. You need this in your life. Make it today my friends

Lemon Granita + Prep: 5 min + Cook: 2 hr 5 min + Yield: 4 servings + 6 tablespoons sugar + 1/3 cup lemon juice + 1 teaspoon finely-grated lemon zest In a saucepan combine sugar with 1 1/2 cups water; bring just to a boil over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Remove pan from heat, leave to cool, then refrigerate until cold. Stir in lemon juice and zest. Pour lemon syrup into a square metal cake pan and place in freezer. Freeze 2 hours in all, removing pan from freezer every 30 minutes, stirring and scraping with a metal fork until ice crystals break up. After 2 hours, granita will resemble snow.
