A Pointe In Time

15520 Windmill Pointe Alpheus W. Chittenden for John Battice Ford 15520 Windmill Pointe is a Georgian Revival mansion completed in 1904. The property was originally located at 8192 East Jefferson Avenue where it remained until 1928, when the house was disassembled, moved, and rebuilt on Windmill Pointe. The 10,500 sq ft residence was commissioned by John B. Ford, grandson of entrepreneur Captain John Baptiste Ford who founded the Michigan Alkali Company. In 1928, J. B. Ford’s son and daughter-in-law, Frederick S. and Esther Ford, moved the property from Indian Village by truck to Windmill Pointe. Charles Kotting, the former partner of the architect, Alpheus Chittenden, was selected to supervise the relocation. The Ford’s lived in their relocated home from 1929 – 1951.

HOMETOWN HERO

A LOCAL DENTIST GIVES BACK TO OUR VETERANS ARTICLE SUSAN KEHOE ANDREAS BROWNE

“I HAVE LOTS OF PRIDE IN SERVING MY COUNTRY.”-- John Warn JOHN WARN IS A TRUE AMERICAN HERO WHO JOINED DESERT STORM IN 1991. While in Iraq, he lost some teeth, including a front tooth that needed replacement. He hadn’t seen a dentist for 30 years. When Dr. Mary Sue Stonisch heard about the situation, she volunteered to provide the repair and cosmetic attention he needed. The damage to the front tooth occurred when John was on his way to a mission in Kuwait and made a quick emergency exit from a vehicle. His gums over the years also needed some special attention from Dr. Mary Sue who did a complete workup and restoration. The delay in dental care was for the same fears many of us have about dentist’s offices. John had many bad experiences in previous dental appointments. He said that a long numbing needle almost went through his cheek one time. The dental procedures performed without numbing treatments persuaded him just to let it go. “The most challenging part of this experience was having the courage to GET to the dentist’s office. “

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE WAR MEMORIAL

WHEN CHARLES BURKE BECAME THE PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE GROSSE POINTE WAR MEMORIAL IN 2014, HE WANTED TO TAKE WHAT WAS ALREADY A COMMUNITY TREASURE AND TURN IT INTO A PLACE THAT NOT JUST HONORED VETERANS, BUT HELPED THEM AS WELL. He was also focused on creating a venue where the community could gather, learn, and be entertained. “It’s important for the community to have places like this in a society that is increasingly becoming more chaotic, divisive and loud,” he says. “A place to rest, to consider, to contemplate, to gather together.” His initial goals for The War Memorial, he says, were centered around a shared conversation with the Board of Directors. “This is a community that is focused on bringing people together, building bridges throughout the community, and having a broad definition of community. There are many ‘Pointes’ but it’s really

one Pointe. So, it’s not just about being a member of Grosse Pointe, which I am, but it’s also about being a member of southeast Michigan, and being part of the energy of Detroit.” About six months after Charles was hired, Edward Russell, III, a managing partner of The Russell Development Company, as well as a founding member of the Grosse Pointe Chamber Foundation, and chair of the Beaumont Foundation, had an opportunity to meet with him. “I was extremely impressed with Charles Burke and the depth of his abilities,” he says. “I’ve lived here all my life – 62 years – and I grew up going to The War Memorial dances and other events. I was impressed with the vision that Charles had.” In 2016, Ed became a board director, and in 2019, the board treasurer of The War Memorial. “I’ve never been on a board that is so diverse ethnically, age wise, and in terms of background,” he says. “It’s a hybrid, and it’s really been fun to attend meetings where there is dialog and a passion for the organization. And, it’s all driven by this long-range plan.” The War Memorial is indeed a place to come together, be with neighbors, and have joyful moments such as weddings or solemn events like funerals. Located on the grounds of the historic Alger Estate on the shores of Lake Saint Clair in Grosse Pointe Farms, it includes the Italian Renaissance-style home designed by architect Charles A. Platt of New York and built in 1910 for Russell A. Alger, Jr. and his family. Donated to the newly formed Grosse Pointe War Memorial Association in 1949, this memorial had a twofold purpose: to serve as a perpetual memorial to the

of the initiatives we now have. At the Patriot Theater, a vet could bring his or her entire family for a holiday buffet dinner and we would then have a complimentary movie. Also, we set aside $50,000 for veterans affected by the flood event this year. We passed out hundreds of grants up to $500. We are coming along beside them to try to accommodate their needs in a practical way.” Adds Charles, “We’ve been aggressive in our growth, and there is a comfortableness here with the community to try new things, while at the same time being very anchored in our core values of being a patriotic, cultural and community leader organization. “What we do is all fundamentally rooted on standing on the shoulders of men and women who were brave and courageous to give us this country that we have today.” Although Charles himself is not a veteran, he comes from a long line of brave family members. His father served in the army for 20 years, while his grandfather was part of the D-Day invasion. “He was wounded in France and Germany; I have his purple heart. My other grandfather was a veteran of World War II.” His brother, of whom he’s also very proud, is a Capital police officer. Like any nonprofit, the organization is always in need of support, but this support can come in different ways. “We have over 25 different volunteer groups that are taking care of our gardens, and we have young families who are investing in our Driver’s Ed programs,” says Charles. “This is one of the largest ecosystems of people with good hearts and that’s what makes us special and unique,” says Ed. “I’m honored to be a small part of a large group that is really committed to enhancing the way we celebrate our

CULINARY CREATIONS

T ha n ksg iv i n g Ta ble

THANKSGIVING ONLY COMES ONCE A YEAR AND AS SUCH THE SELECTION OF SIDES AROUND THE TURKEY ARE ESSENTIAL TO THE OVERALL DINING EXPERIENCE. We have taken the time to find some unique recipe's that are sure to tantalize the tastebuds of your guests around the table. Bon-appetite!

Bacon and Bourbon Thanksgiving Stuffing by Nudles: This recipe makes a HUGE amount of stuffing--enough to stuff a 24 lb. turkey--so adjust the ingredient amounts as needed. The flavors of bacon and bourbon make it richer than any stuffing I’ve ever had, and I always get requests for the recipe. There’s no good way to mix this without using your hands, so just dive in and do it! Egg-type breads such as challah, may be substituted for dark breads. Total: 90 mins, Servings: 24 Yield: 24 servings CHECKLIST: + 1 pound thick-cut bacon, chopped + 1 cup butter + 2 large onions, peeled and chopped + 5 celery stalks, diced + 2 cloves garlic, minced + 2 tablespoons dried rosemary + 1 (1 pound) loaf day-old pumpernickel bread, cubed + 1 (1 pound) loaf day-old dark rye bread, cubed + 8 eggs, lightly beaten + 1 tablespoon dried thyme + 3 tablespoons dried sage leaves + 2 quarts chicken stock (more as needed) + 1 cup good quality bourbon whiskey 34

Grosse Pointe Lifestyle | November 2021

TANTALIZING RECIPE’S FOR THAT SPECIAL DAY

DIRECTIONS: Step 1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease two 9x13 inch baking dishes. Step 2 Place the bacon in a large, deep skillet, and cook over medium high heat until evenly brown. Drain on paper towels. Pour bacon fat remaining in the skillet into a bowl. Step 3 Using the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the onions, celery, garlic, and rosemary, and cook until onions are soft and transparent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the reserved bacon fat. Step 4 Meanwhile, place the pumpernickel and rye bread cubes into a large bowl. Stir in the eggs, thyme, sage, and onion mixture, and toss to mix evenly. Step 5 Stir the chicken stock and bourbon together in a bowl. Pour the chicken stock mixture over the bread mixture, adding more stock to reach desired consistency. Use your hands to evenly mix the ingredients together. Spoon stuffing mixture evenly between the prepared baking dishes and pat down lightly. Step 6 Bake for 45 minutes in the preheated oven or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. If you wish to have a darker crust on top, bake for an additional 10 minutes.

INSPIRED BY BEN HIGGINS TALKS COFFEE, HOPE & HUMANITY, AND WHAT IT MEANS TO BE THANKFUL

Living a Purposeful Life

PROBABLY BEST KNOWN FOR BEING LEAD #20 IN THE BACHELOR, THERE IS SO MUCH MORE TO BEN HIGGINS THAN BEING ONE OF AMERICA’S REALITY TV SWEETHEARTS, SUCH AS HIS DEEP PASSION FOR MAKING MOVES TO “MULTIPLY GOOD IN THE WORLD.” PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED 40

Since his time on The Bachelor, Ben has taken the opportunity to use his fame to create not one, but two inspiring podcasts, publish a successful autobiography, while also elevating awareness of his “for-purpose” Generous Coffee brand. We sat down with him (virtually) to reflect on all that he has accomplished in this season of “thankfulness.”

almost_famouspodcast.

BH: The idea came in July of 2017 and we launched in January of 2018. When the show [The Bachelor] happened, our fundraising increased 500%, but we also knew that it probably wasn’t going to last. We asked ourselves how we can make this more sustainable, and we came up with the idea that we could start a for-profit business and call ourselves “for-purpose.” We donate 100% of our profits to non-profits.

We believe that people enjoy drinking lifechanging coffee that has a story behind it over their regular cup of coffee.
