We live in an efficient and productive obsessed age. And I admit - I fall into the trap sometimes too. The trap of believing the only things worth doing are those for which I can make an exact calculation of the time, effort and investment it will cost me. The things that result in the highest level of control and least amount of uncertainty. But the truth is - that is an unfulfilling way to go through life. We must leave some room for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, for exploring, and even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built. Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration, venture out to new places around town, new businesses and new weekend trips. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a book. To book that trip you’ve been thinking about, to make time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on the calendar. If April showers bring May flowers, make time to play in the rain! Here’s your reminder to - and I say this with warmth in my heart - get lost! Happy April!

GL: WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF KEEPING YOUR GUMS HEALTHY? ET: It is important to treat gum recession, something that 85% of Americans have gum recession. Gum recession leads to bone loss around the tooth and eventual tooth loss. Most people think that because gum recession is not painful that it is not necessary to treat. However, periodontal research shows that gum recession will continue to increase 99.9% of the time. If you have gum recession you have bone loss. The bone loss will continue until the tooth becomes loose and falls out. I am able to treat gum recession and regenerate the lost gum tissue in order for you to keep your teeth longer. A gummy smile can cause people to be self-conscious about their smile. Especially in the days of social media when a picture says a thousand words. A gummy smile is when the teeth appear short and square and there is excessive gum display when smiling. One of the reasons this occurs is because the gum is covering most of the tooth. I can do a gum lift procedure which will show the beautiful natural teeth for a permanent result. It is amazing how one procedure can change someone's life and how they feel about themselves.

GL: WHAT IS ONE UNIQUE ASPECT ABOUT TRAYNOR PERIODONTICS & IMPLANTS? ET: Technology has created amazing changes in dentistry. Allowing me to bring my patients to oral health with minimal discomfort. With the latest technology in my office, I can use real time computer navigation to place the implant as accurately as possible. As a periodontist, placing implants in the most optimal place, while you are in the best possible dental health is important. That being said 38-50% of implants develop periodontal disease. Inflammation and bone loss around the implants which if left untreated will result in failure of the implant. Regular xrays and periodontal exams help to identify sick implants. With laser, periodontal treatment implants can be saved. Bone can be regenerated where the disease took the bone around the implants.

GL: WHAT INFORMATION CAN YOU PROVIDE ABOUT IMPLANTS? ET: Implants have become a part of everyday life. Implants are a great replacement to natural teeth. Patients can replace one or more of their teeth with a natural, healthy solution. Patients that are in dentures are not comfortable eating nor are they getting the nutrition they need. Implant supported teeth can make a huge

GL: WHAT IS THE CONNECTION BETWEEN GUM DISEASE AND HEART DISEASE? ET: There is a tremendous amount of research, especially over the last 30 years, that indicates periodontal disease as a precursor to heart disease, diabetes and stroke. Periodontal disease, if left untreated, can increase the risk for a heart attack or stroke by 50%. It is also linked to Alzheimer's, dementia, rheumatoid arthritis, certain cancers, pre-term labor and still births. Periodontal disease is an infection of the facial bones and supporting tissue that holds the teeth in the mouth. Left untreated, it has a far-reaching effect on the human body.

The Greens at Greenwich lead with empathy as a core value to create a home environment for people experiencing dementia. The Greens is the only memory care facility in this area staffed by licensed psychotherapists with specialties in the creative arts. As Alzheimer’s and other dementias can affect verbal communication, creative arts therapists provide a means of expression for residents through the universal languages of art, music, dance, drama, and storytelling. Adding in empathy helps people feel less alone. "The outstanding difference at The Greens is our specialization in the creative arts therapies including music, art, dance, movement, and drama as essential components to each resident’s plan of care. Our staff, most of whom have been with us over five or more years, have extensive experience in managing the complexities of dementia care. We understand the challenges created by cognitive issues are a family matter and at The Greens we partner with you in navigating this new world,” according to Executive Director Maria Scaros.

Scaros is a licensed creative arts psychotherapist, as well as a clinical chaplain and interfaith minister. She brings her years of clinical experience into The Greens along with spirituality, empathy, and mindfulness. She wants to create a safe space for the residents to live out their new normal in the best way. As she describes, “using the arts is a gateway or a pathway to empathize.” What is empathy? Empathy differs from sympathy in that with empathy, we actually feel what the other person feels. ”You hear someone’s story, and you feel connected. That’s empathy,” says Scaros. It is actually a chemical reaction in the brain, and it is intrinsic in all programs at The Greens. This past December and January of this year the programming was centered on the theme of empathy. There were programs in spiritual empathy, kinesthetic empathy, and symphonic empathy. The therapists feel empathy for the residents. As most of the staff have been with The Greens for several years, including Scaros who has been executive director for eight years, it is a community of care, friendship, and family. The residents feel safe, they feel secure. This carries over to their family members as well. One common experience of people with dementia is sundowning, which occurs at the end of the day. Typically, in their daily life, this is when people would go home after work, and this is when the residents may experience confusion. As part of the music therapy program, they began doing drumming circles. “It started as a cacophony, with everyone beating their drums in different rhythms,” Scaros says. “But as they continued, they found a common beat, and became in sync with each other. They calmed down.” This is a subtle example of a connection that comes after a therapeutic music session. Similarly, the residents are like neighbors to each other. In addition to empathy from the staff, they have empathy for each other. The way they can read body language is almost genius, Scaros says. Because they need to learn new

ways to relate in the world, people experiencing dementia become extremely skilled in reading body language cues. “They can tell, this person is a friend, this person is gentle, by reading body language,” she says. At The Greens, all persons are treated with respect and seen as whole people who have shifted due to circumstance and are journeying in a path they would never have expected. Their families and friends are also a part of this village where everyone plays a role in caring for someone whose life responds to the moment and to love. It is important that people feel they have choices and autonomy over their daily activities. As it is a small group with only 31 residents, it is like a family environment. There are daily activities to engage, and create community, both in groups and one-on-one. Each resident chooses their activities, from dance to drama to singing. The brain center responsible for forming words and communicating is located in the frontal lobe, which is often where dementia occurs, but musicality is all over the brain. So while communication may be failing, a person experiencing dementia is still able to sing. “They remember all the words of familiar songs, and can sing together,” she says.”It brings a feeling of comfort.” Executive Director Maria Scaros

Home is a feeling, more than a physical space, according to Scaros. With dementia, people do not experience time in a linear way. They may think they had seen someone yesterday and it may have been months. “Home is where they feel safe, loved, and secure,” says Scaros. This is what The Greens provides for its residents. Kelly Killoren Bensimon is a celebrated real estate agent, former model, and former cast member of Bravo TV’s reality series The Real Housewives of New York City. In 2019 the mom of two partnered with Nick Pologeorgis to produce an “effortless and high-quality” luxury outerwear brand, Enville, which now includes a home accessories collection. Pieces are sold exclusively through the Pologeorgis store in Greenwich and online. The collection is in its 5th year and includes shearling and wool coats, jackets, cashmere sweaters, pillows, and throws. With a nod to some of the most iconic faces in the industry, Bensimon, or ‘KKB’ as she is known in fashion circles, has named items in the collection after the legendary greats of fashion; Lauren, Amber, Cindy, and Christy, to name a few. Based in Manhattan, Pologeorgis is renowned for quality and unparalleled craftsmanship in furs, shearlings, and outerwear. The family-owned and operated business also offers client services like alterations or remodeling, tailoring, cleaning, and storage. Pologeorgis is an industry pioneer in forging relationships between fashion designers and the fur industry. Founded in 1960 by Stanley Pologeorgis, the team has collaborated with numerous prestigious fashion labels including Balmain, Ralph Rucci, Michael Kors, Derek Lam, and Zac Posen to name a few.

GL: HOW DID THE PARTNERSHIP WITH POLOGEORGIS COME ABOUT? KKB: My great friend and designer, Jill Stuart, was wearing an incredible Pologeorgis coat and it inspired me. The brand is well-known and respected among fashion industry insiders. My youngest daughter had a holiday fair coming up so I reached out to Nick and asked him if he would help me create something unique.

We ended up putting mink on my Birkenstocks and it was a huge hit! I posted them on my Instagram and sold a few hundred during the holiday season. It was a lot of fun working on the project together so we decided to create outerwear pieces.

GL: WHAT IS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR THE OUTERWEAR COLLECTION? KKB: Enville is inspired by the jet-setting supermodel. My supermodel muse needs outerwear that can take her from the slopes of Courchevel to the streets of New York City, and everywhere in between. I’ve never been a fan of fashion boundaries. This project really allows me to explore my creativity in a fun way.

GL: ANY PLANS TO CONTINUE EXPANDING THE ENVILLE PRODUCT LINE? KKB: We just expanded into a home line which is so exciting since home design and interiors are my secret passion. I design my home like I buy clothes. I'm always taking a nod to what's happening in fashion. I selected colors that will easily work with modern and clean interiors. These pieces add a little luxury to any nook. My family and friends love snuggling up on my pillows and throws, these pieces also made amazing housewarming gifts. And, I might add that every home needs a fragrance. I use Alo diffusers that pump lavender into the air, and at night I spray Diptique’s Baies for a fresh evening smell. The scents linger on my home pieces and it adds another layer of luxury.

GL: HOW HAS THE EXPERIENCE BEEN WORKING WITH THE POLOGEORGIS TEAM? KKB: I love working with Pologeorgis because they make my dreams come true. Whatever ideas I have for outerwear- Nick always tells me, "if you want it- we will make it". CONTINUED >

GL: WHAT PIECES IN THE ENVILLE COLLECTION ARE YOUR FAVORITE? KKB: Right now I'm wearing the Amber wool grooved wool zip jacket, it's perfect for transitioning into spring. Managing a Real Estate team of 12 agents at Douglas Elliman in New York, the Hamptons, Florida, and Connecticut keeps me busy so I need pieces that are versatile throughout the day. And when I'm out running errands I'm in the Hemingway safari jacket. It's an easy utilitarian piece that has a detachable shearling liner. I love wearing pieces from the Enville collection throughout the fall, winter, and spring!

GL: WHEN YOU COME TO GREENWICH, WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR STOPS? KKB: I am so glad Nick opened his first retail location in Greenwich! I went to Trinity College and have a lot of connections to the community. I love visiting my friend Stephanie Seymour and going to the farm. My nephews went to Brunswick so I would see them in all their sports activities and performances. I love visiting Carriage House Motor Cars, and Greenwich Library. Belle Haven Country Club is so fun and I love that you can sail anytime you want. And, my favorite restaurant is Hinoki.
