Giving Thanks
November 2023 PUBLISHER
Laura Sabia | laura.sabia@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR
Kristin Burnell | kristin.burnell@citylifestyle.com
In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. We are especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you. This holiday season as we prepare to gather with our loved ones, and in the true spirit of Thanksgiving, let’s set time aside to consider what truly makes life meaningful and stop to reflect on those blessings. Blessings to you and your family,

Hidden in Plain Sig ht Transport out of Cos Cob and to the secret garden on the Mianus River cultivated by the Drenckhahn family ARTICLE BY KELLIE KERWIN PHOTOGRAPHY BY ABBY COLE Cos Cob is a quaint and charming nautical town on the banks of the Long Island Sound. This close-knit community is deep-rooted in history dating back to the 18th century. Believe it or not, it's also home to some of the first settlers in this area, including the Drenckhahns who were one of the original 27 families of Greenwich. They came here as farmers, barn builders and boot makers to make a living. Cut to present time, David Drenckhahn and his siblings remain a staple in Cos Cob, most commonly known for several local businesses, such as Drenckhahn Boat Basin and Drenckhahn Brothers Land Management. What makes this family so special and unique is how they’ve carried on their ancestor’s legacy beyond cultivating successful businesses. The pride in their heritage and namely the land they settled on back hundreds of years ago is truly remarkable. In fact, as you’re driving down Valley Road and crossing over the Mianus
River admiring the view of the water, you likely wouldn’t even realize that you’re also cruising past an enchanted secret garden (my words, not theirs) owned and maintained by David, his brother and David’s dog, Ellie. I recently had the pleasure of visiting the property of 7 acres that is set back from the road, but regally sprawled out on the Mianus River and absolutely breathtaking from every angle. The landscape is perfectly manicured and as I walked through the gardens, I was immediately hit with the smell of flowers that mimicked the finest perfume you could possibly imagine. If the award-winning dahlias weren’t enough, you can enjoy the beauty of many other vibrant blooms, like hybrid marigolds and sunflowers. Luckily for me, David cut up a bunch of flowers that I was able to take home and make into a gorgeous bouquet for my kitchen table – something he used to do weekly for his girlfriend Lisa. Flowers aren’t the only things thriving on the Drenckhahn property. You’ll find rows upon rows of the finest and freshest produce and fruit that David grows all from seed without pesticides,
A very special thank you to the Drenckhahn family, namely David, Bobby, Alan, Craig and Ellie for allowing us the opportunity to tour the property and enjoy everything it offers. In memory of Lisa.

including zucchini, peppers, hot peppers, Swiss chard, turnips, leeks, beans, carrots, kale, corn, tomatoes, onions, potatoes, garlic, pumpkins, apples, blueberries, watermelon and rhubarb, to name a few. And ironically enough, with all these incredible crops outside his door, David doesn’t cook – but he has lots of friends who jar and can what he grows. He thinks of himself as the “lumberyard” (he has the raw products) and will tell people how to cook, not necessarily do it himself. David loves a vegetable broth and hardly ever eats red meat. He also hardly ever waters the gardens and shared, “people constantly overwater, you have to think – you want the root to go deep and when you water, it comes up.” Maybe now we all know what we’ve been doing wrong all these years! Taking care of the crops and land is a year-round job and David loves it all, just like he loves the different seasons that New England has to offer. He will start buying what he needs in November and December and gets started as early as February when the peppers go in. Next up, David will gather up all of his apples for a neighbor to make homemade applesauce and apple cider.

The entire experience of visiting the property was magical, but getting to know a man as humble and kind as David was priceless. I personally feel like part of the family having come home with bags upon bags of fresh produce and flowers – all at no cost. David is incredibly giving and puts the work in to ensure the property is not only well maintained but also expects nothing in return when harvesting food for people he knows to enjoy. I made sure to do right by him and used all that was given to me until it was completely gone. I even have some new recipes from David to try, and once I perfect them, I will be sure to return the favor by dropping off a few dishes to his doorstep. David would like to thank all his special friends who have helped him along the way.

Being Thankful For Your Mind How gratitude works to improve your mental health
ARTICLE BY ASHLEY ALT
When it comes to wellness, Greenwich is practically its own hub of self-care. From boutique fitness studios and luxury salons and spas to flower shops and highly curated shopping destinations, we are surrounded by not only uplifting businesses that benefit our health and wellbeing, but amazing people who make up the backbone of this incredible community. As November is a month notorious for thankfulness, I wanted to shed light on the importance that practicing gratitude holds, and provide some ways you can enhance your gratitude game if you’ve been out of practice for a while. Adopting new habits takes time. Consistency and self-discipline will make all the difference between sticking to a
healthy habit or letting it fall to the wayside. When our to-do lists seem never-ending — keeping up with work deadlines, taking care of our families, heading to doctor’s appointments — on top of maintaining relationships with our spouses, friends and kids — our day-to-day responsibilities seem much more manageable when we are grounded in gratitude. You’ve heard all of the buzzy wellness trends (and have probably tried them, too) like meditating, journaling, cold-plunging, sleep syncing, and mindful drinking and eating, which barely scratches the surface of the enhanced well-being regime, but there is a stark difference between doing what works for you, and keeping up with the wellness Joneses, so to speak. I have personally found gratitude to be a lifesaver in terms of my mood and outlook on life, in particular to improving my mental health. The question is, how do we keep up with a gratitude routine in a way that feels attainable? According to Harvard Health, “gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.” Through their extensive research on gratitude, psychologists associated with Harvard Health have concluded that “gratitude is a way for people to appreciate what they have instead of always reaching for something new in the hopes it will make them happier, or thinking they can’t feel satisfied until every physical and material need is met.” Gratitude, they affirm, helps people refocus on what they have instead of what they lack. Considering ways to cultivate a strong sense of gratitude, people can do a plethora of things including: • Writing a thank-you note to someone. Experts suggest making a habit of sending at least one gratitude letter a month, and even writing one to yourself once in awhile. This can be anyone from a close friend or relative to someone you just met who touched your life in an unexpected way. • Count your blessings: Take a moment each day to think about all of the good that’s surrounding you. Your loving family, your beautiful home, your health. I like to write a few things down each morning that are currently bringing me joy and that I am thankful for, like my health, my kids, my supportive husband, and my job. These can be as small as appreciating the scent of a fresh bouquet of flowers on your kitchen table or the warmth of your cozy bathrobe, or they can be more meaningful like the fact that you are alive and well. • Remind yourself often that you are lucky, no matter what situation you may find yourself in. I always think back to the saying, “When you’re feeling helpless, find a way to be helpful.” It’s easy to get stuck in a negative self-loathing spiral when things CONTINUED >

“The Greenwich community is filled with resources and wonderful people who are more than happy to assist us on our wellbeing journey. It’s up to us to keep the conversation, and positive interactions, going.”
don’t seem to be going your way. You woke up late, your flight got canceled, you forgot about an important meeting, etc. When you take time to remember that the world we live in is vast, and that you and your “problems” are not the center of the universe, it’s much easier to feel thankful for who you are and what you have. Like the other old saying goes, “Someone else has it far worse than you do.” Keep that in mind the next time life throws something unexpected your way. • Make it a habit to do one act of kindness every day: An act of kindness, no matter how big or small, can have a significant impact on both others and yourself. That’s the thing about gratitude and spreading positivity in general — you feel better when you make someone else feel better. Maybe a friend is going through a tough time. Maybe a parent was just diagnosed with a medical issue. Whether you’re offering your neighbor a cup of sugar or helping the librarian clean up the cup of coffee she just spilled, know that you’re making a difference.

• Cook with love: You don’t have to wait for a special occasion to share a home cooked meal with a friend in need. While meal trains for new mothers or sick persons are great, there is no rule saying you can’t make your neighbor or friend a nice meal just because. There’s a difference between cooking to eat and cooking with love. Try and incorporate sharing a meal with someone you care about as a way of showing gratitude. • Thank the people in your community who help you. Like the bus driver who brings your children home, or the dry cleaner who takes excellent care of your clothes. Genuine thank-yous and smiles are a simple and effective way of practicing gratitude, and again, it makes both yourself and the people you are thanking feel great. These are just a few suggestions that can help you get into a good gratitude groove. Once you get into the habit of a thankfulness routine that works for you, it will feel as simple and mindless as brushing your teeth each morning.

The Eyes Behind the Lens CATCHING UP WITH ABBY COLE PHOTOGRAPHY
GL: WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO INTO PHOTOGRAPHY? AC: My journey might surprise you. While I have enjoyed photography as a hobby my entire life, I spent the majority of my life pushing that passion aside while I worked in corporate. I got my undergrad at Temple University, my masters at Sacred Heart Business School, and then worked at fortune 100 companies for over a decade. I always had this itch inside of me that I was meant to combine my business background with my creative passions. My Grandmother always told me that life is too short and you have to do what you love. So finally, several years ago I got the courage to start making that dream a reality. I worked tirelessly to grow my passion from hobby, to side hustle, to a full-time business. It was so worth it, when I was ready to make the jump to full time, I never looked back.
GL: WHAT ARE THE SERVICES YOU OFFER? AC: My mission is to create professional, timeless, and authentic content for businesses to elevate their branding, create brand awareness, and inspire their ideal customer to take action. I specialize in branding, interior design, products, and food photography and videography. Some businesses know exactly what they need and call me to execute that vision. Other businesses will work with me on creating their vision to ensure the photos and videos align with their business goals and branding. I welcome and have worked with businesses of all sizes, from personal brands with just one employee to executive branding photography at Goldman Sachs. CONTINUED >

GL: WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM? AC: I get my inspiration from my clients. The work that I do supports the success and growth of local and small businesses, who are the core of our community. I am so fortunate to work with incredible people. From business owners who put their whole world and passion into building and growing their business. Who get out of their comfort zone and in-front of the camera because nothing will stand in their way of following their passion. To interior designers and architects who create incredible homes and spaces for their clients. I get to capture the outcome of all of that hard work. The opportunity to serve them in capturing their creations in a way that truly values the work and skill that they put into it.
GL: WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE SHOOT YOU HAVE EVER DONE BEFORE? AC: It is too hard to pick a favorite! I have done hundreds of photoshoots and they are all so uniquely amazing. But my favorite feeling is working with repeat clients. Whether they are in my branding membership with quarterly photoshoots, or interior designers who I see time and time again to capture projects. These clients are more like team-members to me. It is an incredible feeling to be part of their business journey and help them achieve their goals.
GL: IF YOU COULD OFFER ANY PIECE OF ADVICE TO ASPIRING PHOTOGRAPHERS, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? AC: Don’t just go with the crowd or hop on a trend in the industry. Be clear on who you are, what your skills are, and how you can make a difference with the unique talents and experience that you have. My background and work experience is in the corporate business world, but I am also an artist and creative at heart. I have blended these experiences which led me to a photography business that allows me to serve other businesses. We are all so unique, it is important believe in yourself and to value your own skillset so that you can truly serve others in a meaningful way. ENJ OY ING YOUR
FRIENDSGIVING Without the stress!
ARTICLE BY DR. KELSEY REEDER
42
S EASON A L SE T U P S | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
November marks a time of comfort, food and a semi new favorite tradition of Friendsgiving. Dr. Kelsey Reeder, local registered dietitian and doctor of clinical nutrition, is sharing intuitive eating tips for your Friendsgiving Feast this year!
1. EAT BREAKFAST Prior to big events centering around food, it is common to restrict calories earlier in the day; however, maintaining a normal meal pattern can prevent a ravenous appetite when sitting down for the big meal.
2. BE PRESENT Yes, Thanksgiving is about the feast, but it is also about being grateful for the individuals in your life and those gathered around the table. Remove the stress of what to eat, and especially the stress centered around “what not to eat,” and be present at the table.
3. HONOR YOUR HUNGER CUES Thanksgiving and Friendsgiving feasts are often associated with the uncomfortable fullness feeling. To prevent reaching this point of fullness this year, start listening and honoring your hunger cues before the date of your feast. This means, listening to your body and not “pushing through” hunger. This includes staying mindful as you are eating so you can appreciate the food and listen to when your body’s signaling when you are starting to become full. In early stages of adopting this practice, it can be difficult to identify signs of hunger and I recommend working directly with a registered dietitian. CONTINUED >

NOVEMBER SEASONAL PRODUCE: Acorn Squash, Apples, Beets, Brussels Sprouts, Butternut Squash, Chard, Cranberries, Delicata Squash, Kabocha Squash, Kale, Parsnips, Pears, Persimmons, Pomegranates, Porcini Mushrooms, Spaghetti Squash, Sweet Potatoes, Turnips If you’re looking for an extra and nutritious side to bring to your Friendsgiving meal, consider making this roasted butternut squash recipe! Butternut squash is not only in season in November, but is great tasting. RECIPE
4. PARTICIPATE IN JOYFUL MOVEMENT One of the principles of Intuitive Eating is engaging in types of movements that you enjoy. This piece of advice does not mean that you have to exercise to “earn” your calories that you are going to consume later in the day, but instead to participate in any form of movement that brings you joy. This can be something like tossing the football around or going for a walk. Additionally, the light movement after eating your meal will assist in the digestive process.
5. ENJOY THE SEASONAL FOOD Fall, and specifically Thanksgiving, has a bounty of seasonal food items including November produce as well as seasonal desserts and dishes! Allowing yourself to have your favorite Thanksgiving dessert is actually honoring your body more than if you were craving it and restricted yourself from it.

The Exceptional Care at King Street Rehab

King Street Rehab is a family-owned and operated rehabilitation and long-term care facility located in Westchester County, NY which has been serving patients for three generations under the leadership of the Wilner family. This luxury care center specializes in helping its patients to regain empowered, independent living through a broad array of services, all delivered in a welcoming, reparative environment. Located on 12 beautiful acres in Rye Brooke, NY, right on the border of Greenwich, CT, the primary focus of King Street Rehab is to provide world-class treatment and accommodations to its patients. This is executed beautifully through King Street's state-ofthe-art facility which offers both short-term rehabilitation and long-term care to patients primarily through physical and occupational therapy, wound care, IV Therapy and cardiac care, among numerous other services—all provided seven days a week. "People typically come to us for help after a hip fracture, knee replacement surgery, a stroke, or other similar condition," Jennifer said. "We're here to give patients the best care possible in the best setting, so they
can recover quickly and go home. We want to make a difference. The opportunity to give our residents exceptional care in an immaculate surrounding is rare and we are proud to do it." The center also specializes in caring for patients experiencing neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's and dementia. "When our patients arrive they're recovering from any number of things, but when they leave they are so vibrant," Lindsey remarked. "We have wonderful programs to support our residents mentally and emotionally, as well as through our strength, nutrition, and community activities." The care at King Street is hyper-individualized for each resident depending on their needs and level of care with additional offerings like gardening, yoga, music therapy, provided in addition to more traditional therapeutic options. "Our goal is to return each individual back to their home healthier and stronger than they were before," adds Lindsey. Our mission is broader than skilled nursing or physical therapy. We provide whole body wellness to our patients in a beautiful and nourishing environment. CONTINUED >

Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table. Candlesticks, vases, little pumpkins and gourds, or fall decor you have on hand can make a great centerpiece. Add fresh flowers or dried foliage for that extra layer of texture and color.

Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky. Adding a cloth napkin and cloth placemat is a great way to add texture and more autumn color to your table. If the weather doesn’t cooperate on your day, bring the outdoors in with a lovely indoor garden party dressed up in fall foliage.

Rustic yet elegant, this tablescape combines the love of traditional, vintage and natural elements with an updated twist. Inspired by wooded acreage, the Spode Woodland Collection transferware designs are rooted in proper hunting tradition and perfect for marrying nature with traditional elegance. Dating back to 1831, the collection features various animals centered by the British Flowers border. This French antique dining room set was chosen for an intimate gathering for four. The fawn table runner mimicking deer spots brings an earthy, yet elevated foundation as the base for this table setting. Coordinating fawn napkins wrapped with twine and topped with natural feathers creates a whimsical touch. The stunning centerpiece starts with a vintage silver water pitcher that is then filled with fresh, sweet arrowwood Viburnums leaves. To complete the look, pair crystal glasses with vintage crystal stemware, and mix gold flatware with antique silver water pitchers, delicate salt and pepper shakers and your favorite trays.
